Civil society group World Peace Volunteers (WPV) has expressed concern over what it describes as the excessive deployment of public resources during the recent Akwatia by-election.
In a statement, the organisation said its observation team noted an unusually high level of logistics and personnel, including over 5,000 police officers, numerous police vehicles, school buses, and Metro Mass Transit (MMT) buses—all committed to a single parliamentary contest.
WPV described the deployment as unsustainable and a poor use of limited public funds, particularly at a time when the country is facing economic challenges.
“The level of resource deployment was excessive and, in our opinion, a misuse of public funds. This, in our view, is neither sustainable nor prudent,” the group said.
As an alternative, WPV suggested that when a parliamentary seat becomes vacant, the party that originally won the seat could nominate a replacement without holding a costly by-election, thereby cutting expenses while maintaining democratic representation.
The group, which has participated in election observation missions across Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, and other countries, called on political stakeholders—particularly the NPP and NDC—to put national interest above partisan gain.
WPV urged leaders to support reforms that promote peace, unity, and responsible governance.
