Why should we fight over a piece of land? – MP questions amidst Gbenyiri clashes

The Member of Parliament for Sawla-Tuna-Kalba, Andrew Chiwetey, has raised alarm over renewed clashes in Gbenyiri and its surrounding communities, describing the situation as needless and tragic.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Chiwetey revealed that the violence had directly affected his family, with several houses belonging to them set ablaze.

“My family is under attack; houses belonging to us have been burnt. This is a very painful situation,” the MP lamented.

He said the clashes, which began as a dispute over a small parcel of land, had spiraled out of control and spread to other areas, including communities in the Bole District.

“If a group of people have a disagreement over land, why should that extend to other parts of the town? It baffles me that even people in Bole, who are not part of Sawla, are being affected. This should have remained within Gbenyiri,” he remarked.

According to him, the disputed property is not even a full plot of land.

“When I hear that people are dying over this issue, I find it difficult to comprehend. Where the fight started is just a small piece of land, yet it has resulted in so much destruction and loss of lives,” he said.

The clashes, which erupted over the weekend, have claimed at least 10 lives, injured several others, and forced residents to flee for safety.

Security forces have since been deployed to restore calm in the affected areas.
