Former Member of Parliament for New Juabeng South and senior member of the Kennedy Agyapong campaign, Dr. Mark Assibey-Yeboah, has explained why he recently shifted his support to Kennedy Agyapong.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Dr. Assibey-Yeboah said his earlier support for former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia during the NPP’s 2023 internal contest was aimed at addressing concerns about the party’s identity.
According to him, there was a perception that the New Patriotic Party was dominated by one ethnic group, and supporting Dr. Bawumia was necessary to dispel claims that the party was an “Akan-only” political organisation.
He explained that backing Dr. Bawumia helped the party respond to those questions, a strategy that contributed to Dr. Bawumia securing 61 percent of the votes in the party’s flagbearer race.
Dr. Assibey-Yeboah added that although Kennedy Agyapong had approached him for support at the time, he declined, believing the party first needed to address its internal identity concerns.
He stressed that his current support for Kennedy Agyapong is based on what he believes is in the party’s best interest moving forward.
“In truth, if we went back to 2023, I would still support Bawumia. As the NPP, we had questions to answer. We were labelled as an Akan party, and there was doubt about whether we would support him fully, so I felt it was important for us to rally together.
“This informed my decision at the time, and we achieved significant support, with him receiving 61% of the vote. When Ken approached me for support, I decided not to do so because we needed to address the concerns facing our party. Now, no one can label the NPP as solely an Akan party,” he stated.
