Assembly members in the Asutifi North District of the Ahafo Region have declared that they will no longer allow Newmont Gold Ghana to construct any town roads in the district unless they are asphalted.
The decision was taken during an emergency meeting at Kenyasi under the theme *“No Asphalt, No Roads,”* which brought together 37 members of the assembly.
Speaking to Adom News, the Presiding Member, Nnuro Ameyaw, explained that the assembly has passed a resolution rejecting the construction of double chip seal roads, locally called sapite, in all five communities where Newmont operates — Kenyasi No.1, Kenyasi No.2, Ntotroso, Gyedu, and Wamahinso.
He noted that most of the roads built by the company in recent years have deteriorated, creating dust and potholes that endanger motorists and residents.
“We can no longer accept substandard works in the name of corporate social responsibility,” he said.
Former Presiding Member and Assembly Member for Asukese North Electoral Area, Anane John Kwasi, added that Newmont, as a global brand known for safety and quality, should not compromise on road standards in the communities where it operates. He stressed that the existing roads have failed due to poor quality materials and construction.
The assembly members insist that future road projects must meet asphalt standards to ensure durability and safety for road users.
