The 500-bed Afari Military Hospital in the Atwima Nwabiagya North District of the Ashanti Region has been left abandoned, with its environs overtaken by weeds, raising concerns over the stalled multi-million-cedi project.
A visit by Nhyira/Adom News revealed halted construction and a site engulfed in dense vegetation, highlighting the lack of progress.
In February 2025, the late Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, disclosed that Euroget De-Invest, the contractors responsible for the project, had been directed to submit all outstanding financial, legal, and technical issues to the Defence Ministry.
Dr. Boamah reaffirmed the government’s commitment to completing the long-delayed hospital and making it operational by September 2025, emphasizing that President John Dramani Mahama’s initial vision was for the hospital to be completed by 2018.
Construction of the facility was first initiated around 2007–2008 under the Kufuor administration, though work officially began in 2014. The hospital is intended to serve as a major referral centre to ease pressure on the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.
Despite these plans, the project has experienced repeated delays, with several completion deadlines missed, leaving the community and health sector stakeholders concerned about its eventual completion.
