The Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, together with the Asogli State, has appealed for the extension of the Gun Amnesty Programme (GAP), describing it as a critical intervention for enhancing peace, security and social stability in the region.
The appeal was made during a courtesy call on the Executive Secretary of the National Small Arms Commission (NSAC), Dr. Adams Bonaa. Mr. Gunu said the programme has contributed significantly to reducing the circulation of illicit firearms and encouraging the voluntary surrender of weapons.

According to him, extending the amnesty would allow more individuals to hand over illegal arms without fear of prosecution, while deepening public confidence in the initiative.
Speaking on behalf of Togbe Afede XIV, the Vice President of the Asogli State and Chief of Heve, Togbe Anikpi III, supported the call and reaffirmed the commitment of traditional authorities to the success of the programme.
He noted that an extension would enable chiefs and opinion leaders to intensify community sensitisation on the dangers posed by the proliferation of small arms and light weapons.
Responding to the appeal, Dr. Adams Bonaa welcomed the initiative and commended the Volta Regional Minister and the Asogli State for their leadership and commitment to national peace and security.
He assured them that the request would be forwarded to the Minister for the Interior for consideration as part of the Commission’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the Gun Amnesty Programme nationwide.
