President John Dramani Mahama has urged the people of the Volta Region to preserve and strengthen the area’s reputation as Ghana’s “oxygen,” highlighting the importance of environmental sustainability alongside development.

He made the call during the sod-cutting ceremony for the Ho Oxygen City Project, a flagship urban development initiative being undertaken in collaboration with the Ho Municipal Assembly and the Tema Development Corporation (TDC).

President Mahama emphasized that the Volta Region’s lush green landscapes and natural resources are invaluable assets that must be protected even as development progresses. He explained that the Oxygen City Project is designed to balance modern urban infrastructure with eco-friendly planning, ensuring that growth does not come at the expense of the environment.

He called on traditional authorities, local government officials, and residents to work together to safeguard green spaces, promote tree planting, and support sustainable practices to maintain the region’s environmental vibrancy for future generations.

The President further noted that the Ho Oxygen City Project represents a new model for urban development, prioritizing clean air, organized planning, and improved living standards, while creating economic opportunities for the youth.

The sod-cutting ceremony was attended by traditional leaders, government officials, and residents, who expressed optimism that the project would significantly contribute to Ho’s transformation and reinforce the Volta Region’s identity as a green and sustainable hub.
