Vincent Assafuah petitions Diplomatic Corps over rights abuses

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, has petitioned the diplomatic community over what he describes as an “alarming wave of arrests” of citizens under the current government.

In a strongly worded letter to the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps in Ghana, Mr. Assafuah alleged that the country has been plunged into a “den of terror,” where citizens are harassed for expressing dissenting views. He called on the diplomatic community to intervene and urge the government to respect Ghana’s democratic values and safeguard citizens’ rights.

“I humbly petition your high office to take urgent note of the disturbing developments currently unfolding in our country, Ghana, since the assumption of office by the NDC government on 7 January 2025,” the MP wrote.

“Today, Ghana stands at a dark crossroads in our democratic journey. Our beloved nation has been plunged into a climate of fear and intimidation where dissent is punished and criticism is criminalised. What Ghana is experiencing is not democracy, but an orchestrated campaign of political persecution designed to silence voices that refuse to sing praises to the regime.”

Mr. Assafuah cited several high-profile politicians he claimed had been harassed and detained, alongside ordinary citizens who, according to him, have also been unlawfully held for expressing dissent.
