Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, alongside the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has officially commissioned the Newmont Ahafo North Mine in the Ahafo Region — a project expected to boost economic growth and create new job opportunities.

The commissioning ceremony, held at Afrisipakrom in the Tano North Municipality, brought together government officials, traditional leaders, and community representatives.

In her address, the Vice President described the launch of the Ahafo North Mine as a key milestone in Ghana’s efforts to expand its mining industry and tackle unemployment, a persistent national challenge. She noted that the mine will positively impact five communities — Afrisipakrom, Terchire, Yamfo, Susuaho, and Adrobaa — by promoting local development and improving livelihoods.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang also commended the Asantehene and his sub-chiefs for fostering cooperation among stakeholders, which she said was instrumental in the mine’s operationalisation.

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Kofi Armah-Boah, urged Newmont Gold Ghana to maintain the highest standards of responsible mining to safeguard both residents and the environment. He emphasized that the government will closely monitor the company’s operations to ensure compliance with environmental and safety regulations.

Newmont CEO Tom Palmer reaffirmed the company’s commitment to sustainable mining, assuring stakeholders that its operations will remain transparent and beneficial to both Ghana and the host communities.
