The Union of Trainee Nurses and Midwives, Ghana (UTNMG), has called on the government to take urgent action to address persistent delays in the payment of allowances to trainee nurses, midwives, and rotation nurses across the country.
In a statement dated January 14, 2026, the union said the delays have caused widespread frustration, anxiety, and financial hardship, particularly for rotation nurses, some of whom are owed up to 15 months of unpaid allowances.
UTNMG commended the government and the Ministry of Health for migrating trainee allowances from the Ez-Wich system to a full banking platform, describing the move as a positive step toward transparency and efficiency.
However, the union noted that challenges such as difficulties in bank account creation, data inconsistencies from some training institutions, and technical issues in certain banks have contributed to the delays.
The union also expressed concern over proposals to pay allowances strictly based on approved admission quotas, warning that such a policy could exclude legitimately admitted trainees currently serving in the health system. UTNMG urged the government to adopt a fair and inclusive payment framework.
The statement further appealed for the immediate commencement of regular monthly payments for rotation nurses and the expedited processing of allowances for those who completed service in December 2025.
UTNMG reaffirmed its commitment to constructive engagement with stakeholders, stressing that the welfare of trainee nurses and midwives is a national responsibility critical to sustaining Ghana’s healthcare system.
