Unpaid debts: Our wives are leaving us – Construction Chamber CEO

The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Construction Industry, Emmanuel A. Cherry, has lamented the dire effects of the government’s failure to pay contractors, revealing that many members are facing broken homes and severe financial distress.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr. Cherry said some contractors are owed between GH₵300 million and GH₵600 million, with many projects left unpaid since 2018.

“It’s been nine months since the new government took office, and the Road Fund Board has still not been constituted. Without it, payments are impossible. We’ve worked for the government, yet we don’t know where we stand,” he said.

He added that the situation has become unbearable for contractors.

Mr. Cherry urged President John Dramani Mahama to take direct action to ensure the immediate constitution of the Road Fund Board and facilitate payments to contractors who continue to suffer under the weight of government indebtedness.

“We have worked for the government, and it owes some people 600 million cedis, 400 million cedis, and others 300 million cedis. This situation is affecting many contractors, and that is why we have sent our grievances to the president, but nothing has been done about it.

“We have reached a critical point; our wives are leaving us, we are in debt, and we are now the ones struggling at home. The president needs to take the lead on this issue so that a board can be formed to facilitate our payments. We have not been paid from 2018 to date,” he said.
