Two young women have been arrested for allegedly attempting to smuggle suspected Indian hemp into the Ankaful Maximum Security Prison in the Central Region.

The suspects, identified as 21-year-old Beauty Buerkie Buertey and 23-year-old Maura Amissah, are currently in the custody of the Elmina Police, assisting with investigations.

According to Crime Check, the two were apprehended after prison officers detected that a container of pepper sauce, locally known as shito, had allegedly been laced with substances suspected to be Indian hemp.

The concealed substance was discovered during routine inspection procedures at the prison, preventing it from reaching inmates.

Authorities say the suspects were immediately handed over to the police for further investigations, and the substance has been retrieved for examination as part of the ongoing probe.

Police add that the two women will be processed in accordance with the law once investigations are completed.
