The Bekwai Circuit Court has sentenced two convicted armed robbers to a combined 40 years’ imprisonment with hard labour for a robbery attack in the Ashanti South Region.

Presiding over the case, His Honour Isaac Appiatu handed down the sentences to Francis Opong, 19, and Francis Nyamekye, also known as Amearo, 35, after they were found guilty of armed robbery.

Speaking to Adom News at the Ashanti South Regional Police Headquarters, the Deputy Ashanti South Regional Police Commander, ACP Cephas Arthur, said the convicts attacked the home of a small-scale miner in January 2024.

According to ACP Arthur, the two men raided the victim’s residence and stole a pump-action gun, GH¢2,000, a mobile phone, and eight pams of gold.

Investigations led to the arrest and prosecution of the suspects, culminating in their conviction by the court. Francis Opong was sentenced to 15 years in prison, while Francis Nyamekye received a 25-year sentence, both to be served with hard labour.

The police described the conviction as a strong signal to criminal elements that armed robbery will not be tolerated and assured the public of continued efforts to protect lives and property across the region.
