Two young men have drowned in a galamsey pit at Subri Nkwanta in the Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai Municipality of the Western North Region.

The deceased have been identified as Donkor Junior, 20, and Enock Agyapong, 19.

According to Kofi Ahenwah, father of one of the victims, he received a distress call informing him that the two had drowned in an abandoned illegal mining pit in the area.

The victims were engaged in illegal mining activities when the unfortunate incident occurred.

He said the two were rushed to the Anhwiaso Community Hospital for emergency treatment but were pronounced dead on arrival by medical officials.

The bodies have since been deposited at the Anhwiaso Community Morgue, while the Ghana Police Service has been notified and has commenced investigations into the incident.

Illegal mining pits remain a major safety concern in several mining communities across the country, with residents frequently calling for stricter enforcement and land reclamation to prevent such tragic incidents.
