The chiefs and residents of Twenease-Sofoase in the Atwima Kwanwoma Municipality of the Ashanti Region have raised concerns about the increasing use of firearms by some youth in the community, which has led to fear and panic among residents.
This is in relation to a chieftaincy dispute in the community.
They allege some young men wielding guns cause destruction at various gatherings, including weddings and funerals, which poses a threat to their lives.
“My children and grandchildren refuse to run errands for me when I send them to buy something, stating that they are afraid of these guys with firearms,” a 90-year-old woman highlighted.
According to the residents, such incidents hinder the development of the community. They are appealing to the security agencies and the Asantehene to intervene in the traditional dispute in order to restore peace in the community.
They expressed fear that the situation has the potential to escalate into a full-blown communal clash if not addressed promptly, calling on the Ghana Police to intensify investigations into the matter to restore calm.
Odiatuo Obrempong Akwasi Ahuoyaa Ababio, Essumaja Tuntuhene and also Twenease/Sofoasehene, made a passionate appeal to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, Nana Juaben Manhene, and the security services to improve security in the community.
He further revealed that the actions of the youth have halted development, with people not interested in investing in the community.
“If measures are not put in place for peace to prevail, we are going to retaliate,” he stated.
