The Minister of Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has summoned officials of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and other commercial transport operators over allegations of artificial scarcity within the transport sector.
The development was disclosed by the Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, while speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Wednesday, January 14, 2026.
He said some commercial drivers are engaging in rent-seeking behaviour by deliberately limiting vehicle availability to inflate fares, despite recent reductions in fuel prices and import duties on spare parts.
According to Mr. Kwakye Ofosu, the Transport Minister has scheduled a meeting with transport unions to address the issue and call errant operators to order in order to ease the hardship faced by commuters.
He explained that some drivers deliberately avoid designated stations and instead roam around urban centres, particularly during peak hours, to exploit passengers who are desperate for transport.
Mr. Kwakye Ofosu described the practice as unlawful and stressed that government is determined to clamp down on operators who engage in such activities.
He noted that following a 15 per cent reduction in transport fares after successive fuel price cuts, some operators have resorted to creating artificial shortages to maximise profits.
He assured commuters that government will take decisive action to restore sanity in the transport sector and improve movement within the capital, especially during morning and evening rush hours.
