An alleged burglar, identified as Ibrahim Muntawakiru, aged 33, has been arrested after he was found trapped in the reinforced ceiling of a rural bank in Koforidua, in the Eastern Region.

The arrest brought to an end what police believe was a three-day burglary operation during which several shops along the Legion Hall stretch in the Central Business District of Koforidua were allegedly ransacked.

The suspect is said to have finally taken refuge in the ceiling of the rural bank in an attempt to evade detection.

According to police sources, Muntawakiru conducted surveillance in the area for about 11 days prior to carrying out the operation.

His movements, however, were disrupted by intensified police patrols in the central business district, which reportedly cut off his escape routes.

Unable to flee, the suspect remained hidden in the ceiling until shop owners who had earlier closed for business returned and detected signs of a break-in, prompting a search that led to his discovery and arrest.

A search conducted by the police led to the retrieval of several items from a concealed sack believed to belong to the suspect.

These included two hacksaw blades, a hammer, a metal punch, two screwdrivers, a crowbar, assorted keys of different types, a pair of pliers, a keypad mobile phone, a pair of scissors, a grinding machine, two grinding wheels, three wooden hammer handles and cash amounting to GH¢9,133.00.

The suspect is currently in police custody assisting with investigations and is expected to be put before court as investigations continue.
