The Northern Regional Police Command has dismissed viral videos purportedly showing officers manhandling students during Tuesday’s Tamale Technical University (TTU) protest, describing the footage as “imported” and misleading.
Chief Inspector Luckman Alhassan, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, said police were deployed around 9 a.m. to assess the situation after receiving reports of a student protest against university management.
“When we got there, the students were burning tyres at the administration. We pleaded with them to calm down and dialogue with management,” he explained.
According to the PRO, the situation escalated when some demonstrators became aggressive and began pelting stones at police.
“We brought in water cannons to disperse the crowd, but even then, we maintained professionalism and did not retaliate,” he stated.
Chief Inspector Alhassan stressed that some videos circulating online, including one showing an officer holding a student by the chest, were not from the Northern Region.
“I can authoritatively say that incident was not carried out by our men,” he clarified, urging the public to verify content before sharing to avoid misrepresenting the work of security agencies.
