There’s no excitement in Ghana football today – Bernard Aryee

Former Hearts of Oak star Bernard Aryee has raised concerns over what he describes as the sharp decline of football in Ghana, lamenting the lack of excitement and quality in the current game.

Speaking on Adom TV’s Fire for Fire, the ex-Liberty Professionals midfielder said the sport was far more attractive during his playing days compared to what is seen now.

“It’s honestly tough watching Ghana football these days. You ask yourself, who are you going to the stadium to watch?” the former Black Stars midfielder said.

“There is nobody you can pinpoint and say, ‘I’m going to watch this player.’ But in our days, there were a lot of stars you wanted to go to the stadium and watch.”

Aryee recounted an incident that underscored his worry.

“Football in Ghana is declining, and it is worrying. Some time ago, I was at the stadium with Alhaji Hearts to watch a national team game, and he was at the stadium sleeping, and I was shocked.”

The former midfielder, who was part of Ghana’s squad at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, also reflected on his time at Hearts of Oak, stressing the fierce competition that once existed among players.

“When I joined Hearts of Oak, I had to work hard to get a place in the squad because there were quality players in the team. But it’s not like today; there is no such attitude among the players.”
