The best players will make Black Stars’ squad for 2026 World Cup – GFA boss Kurt Okraku

-

President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku, has assured that only the best-performing players will be selected to represent the Black Stars at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Ghana, who missed out on qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), will make a return to the global stage when the tournament kicks off next summer in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

With head coach Otto Addo yet to announce his final squad for the Mundial, Mr Okraku emphasised that the GFA’s Executive Council will insist on a merit-based selection.

“Every Ghanaian who is playing well will be given a chance by the technical team. At the end of the day, only 11 players can be selected to play on the pitch, and the final selection has to be only 24 players who can make the squad,” he told Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show.

He also backed the call from the Minister of Youth and Sports, Kofi Adams, for transparency and excellence in player selection.

“What the Executive Council demands from the technical team is the best, and if the Minister [Kofi Adams] make a demand that we must select the best players and be transparent, it is right because Ghana must field the best players as always.

“We cannot sit down aloof for any player to make the squad, and I welcome the suggestion by the Sports Minister to get the best players for the Black Stars,” he added.

The Black Stars will learn their group-stage opponents for the 2026 World Cup on December 5.
