The Telecel Ghana Music Awards has introduced a new policy called the “Swing Period” to ensure that songs released toward the end of the year receive fair consideration in the awards scheme.

The policy, which takes effect with the 27th edition of the awards, allows songs released in December to be considered in the following awards year, provided they meet specific eligibility criteria.

According to the TGMA Board, the decision follows three years of consultations with industry stakeholders and aims to prevent impactful songs released late in the year from being disadvantaged during the nomination process.

Under the new guidelines, a song must have been released in December of the eligibility year, demonstrated measurable impact within the review period, and must not have received a nomination in the previous edition of the awards to qualify for the Swing Period.

The Board explained that the initiative reflects the awards scheme’s commitment to adapting to the evolving music industry while maintaining fairness and credibility in its selection process.

For the 27th edition of the awards, two songs have already benefited from the new policy: “Messiah” by Sarkodie featuring Kweku Flick, and “Excellent” by Kojo Blak featuring Kelvyn Boy. Both songs recorded significant audience engagement and popularity after their release, illustrating the situation the Swing Period was designed to address.

The TGMA Board believes the policy will strengthen the awards’ ability to recognise excellence in Ghanaian music by ensuring deserving works are not overlooked due to their release timing.

Organisers also noted that the change aligns with current industry realities, including the growing influence of digital streaming platforms, shifting release cycles, and the expanding global reach of Ghanaian music.

The Telecel Ghana Music Awards remains one of Ghana’s most prestigious music recognition platforms, celebrating outstanding achievements across multiple genres in the country’s music industry.
