The announcement also highlighted fans planning to attend the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico this summer.

In a statement, the Embassy urged prospective applicants to take advantage of the newly available appointments.

“We have more than 2,000 visa appointment slots available in the next two weeks for B1/B2 travellers — whether you’re planning a business trip, visiting family, general tourism, or wanting to watch the World Cup,” the statement said.

Applicants with appointments scheduled later in the year have been encouraged to reschedule to earlier dates to meet the increased demand. B1/B2 visas cover both business and tourism purposes, and interviews must be booked through the official visa application website. The Embassy also reminded applicants to ensure they prepare all necessary documentation before attending their interview.

The announcement comes amid growing excitement ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the Ghana national football team set to make their fifth appearance at the tournament.

The four-time African champions have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama national football team, England national football team, and Croatia national football team. Ghana will open their campaign against Panama on June 17, face England on June 23, and conclude the group stage against Croatia on June 27.

As part of preparations for the tournament, the Black Stars will regroup in March for friendly matches against Austria national football team and Germany national football team, before taking on Mexico national football team in May and concluding their preparations with a match against Wales national football team on June 2.

During the tournament, the team will be based at Bryant University in the United States.

After group-stage exits in 2014 and 2022, the Black Stars will be aiming for a stronger performance in North America.

The Embassy clarified that the newly opened visa appointment slots are available to all eligible B1/B2 applicants and are not limited to travellers attending the World Cup.

Overstay and face the consequences – US Embassy warns Ghanaian World Cup fans http://34.58.148.58/overstay-and-face-the-consequences-us-embassy-warns-ghanaian-world-cup-fans/ Sat, 21 Feb 2026 12:16:36 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2633414 The Charge d’Affaires of the US Embassy in Ghana, Rolf Olson, has cautioned Ghanaians travelling to the United States, particularly for the upcoming World Cup, against overstaying their visas, describing it as a serious offence with far-reaching consequences.

Addressing a press conference at the Embassy in Accra today, Friday, February 20, 2026, Mr Olson said Customs and Border Protection officers would determine the length of stay granted to each visitor upon arrival in the United States.

He explained that although the standard period for a B visa, which supporters would need to apply for, is generally six months, the duration of stay is not automatic and remains at the discretion of the immigration officer at the port of entry.

“For a B visa, the standard generally is six months, but it’s not automatic. So, it is incumbent upon the amount of time that the CBP officer gives you. If they give you 90 days, you have 90 days. You have three months.

“If you’re given six months, you have six months which is a long time. I think we can all agree that six months is enough time to go watch the World Cup matches, spend some time with friends, go on a vacation if you wanted to do that, and still return,” he said.

The Charge d’Affaires stressed that Ghanaians must respect US immigration laws and regulations, including adhering strictly to the terms of their visas. He warned that overstaying is considered a breach of the law and could result in penalties such as deportation and future visa denials.

Mr Olson further clarified that while Ghana currently benefits from a five-year multiple-entry visa arrangement, consular officers retain the authority to limit the validity of a visa where necessary.

“The consular officer can limit the validity of a visa. It is in their power to do that. There is no automatic five-year multiple entry. Generally, that’s the standard, and we generally apply that for most travelers.

“You’ll have the opportunity to go again, if you wish. But, limiting the length of time is a normal thing for any country that’s watching its immigration, obviously, and controlling the visitor flow,” he said.

He disclosed that the US Embassy has opened tens of thousands of new visa appointment slots in an effort to reduce waiting times and encouraged prospective applicants to apply early or reschedule for earlier interview dates where possible.

The caution comes amid heightened interest from Ghanaian supporters seeking to travel to the United States for the global football tournament, with embassy officials reiterating that compliance with immigration rules is essential to maintaining travel privileges.

US Embassy to launch FIFA Pass visa system for World Cup travelers http://34.58.148.58/us-embassy-to-launch-fifa-pass-visa-system-for-world-cup-travelers/ Thu, 22 Jan 2026 05:28:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2622277 The United States Embassy in Accra has announced plans to introduce a new dedicated system designed to facilitate visa applications for fans traveling to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Embassy’s Press Attaché, Matthew Asada, confirmed that the initiative, known as the “FIFA Pass”, is in its final stages and will be formally launched soon.

“Specifically for the World Cup, I also want to highlight something that is not yet finalized, but it will be coming here shortly, and we will have more information about that soon,” Asada stated in an interview with Citi Eyewitness News on Wednesday, January 21.

He explained that the FIFA Pass, which stands for the FIFA Prioritised Appointment Scheduling System, will guarantee timely visa appointments for ticket holders.

“This will ensure that any non-immigrant visa applicant with a valid FIFA 2026 World Cup ticket is able to get an appointment before the World Cup itself,” Asada added.

The announcement comes as the U.S. Embassy in Accra continues to increase non-immigrant visa appointment availability, releasing thousands of extra slots in response to growing demand.

Embassy officials have strongly advised prospective travelers to begin their visa application process early to avoid delays.

Applicants are also reminded to use only the Embassy’s official scheduling channels to prevent fraud and unauthorized third-party interference.

Further details regarding the FIFA Pass system will be communicated once the rollout is finalised.

US Embassy warns Ghanaians on visa fraud, illegal immigration risks http://34.58.148.58/us-embassy-warns-ghanaians-on-visa-fraud-illegal-immigration-risks/ Fri, 09 May 2025 12:20:49 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2533431 The U.S. Embassy in Ghana has issued an important advisory to Ghanaians regarding the risks associated with engaging in unauthorized visa processes and immigration practices. The Embassy emphasizes that such actions may result in visa denials, revocations, or even deportation.

This advisory was shared during a Consular Media Day on May 9, 2025, which served to clarify the U.S. visa application process, showcase enhancements in the visitor experience, and outline the procedures related to visa policies.

In the year 2024, the Embassy received a total of 61,000 visa applications, resulting in the issuance of 25,000 visas to Ghanaian applicants.

During the event, Consular General Elliot Fertik reiterated the U.S. Embassy’s dedication to fostering a transparent and seamless travel experience for citizens of Ghana.

“We continue to welcome visitors from Ghana who are interested in studying, investing, or doing business in the U.S. Last year, the U.S. embassy issued 25,000 visas to Ghanaians for work, study, or visits to the U.S. But with entry to the U.S., visa applicants or holders must follow our laws,” he said.

He expressed that the U.S. government upholds a firm position regarding the issue of illegal immigration.

“The U.S. has zero tolerance for illegal immigrants. Those who break the rules will face the law, including visa refusal or an outright ban from entering the U.S.,” he added.

“We want to make sure that Ghanaians understand the proper way to apply for visas and what is expected of them when applying,” he continued.

Fertik highlighted the continued initiatives by the Embassy aimed at enhancing the visa application process, with a focus on fostering transparency and elevating the customer experience.

“Visitors to the U.S. must ensure that they obey the laws and regulations. I am sure you have noticed some of the improvements we have made to improve customer experience. The Department of State’s top priority is ensuring the safety of U.S. citizens overseas and extending help to those who need help away from home.”

He concluded by highlighting the importance of the U.S. government’s dual mission: to promote legal travel while ensuring the security of U.S. borders.

“We also have the mandate of ensuring our borders are protected by preventing illegal immigration and enforcing the laws,” he stated.

The two intellectual property enforcement workshops include nearly 60 officials from the judiciary, customs, and law enforcement sectors.

“In the information age, intellectual property protections are key to promoting equitable economic growth and international trade while protecting individual innovations.

“We hope this training will help make Ghana’s IP processes more accessible to ordinary Ghanaians by sharing our experience in the United States regarding the adjudication and enforcement of IP cases,” said Chargé d’affaires Rolf Olson during the opening session on Tuesday.

The two-part training sessions will focus first on judges, then customs and law enforcement officials, over four days (April 23-26).

U.S. federal judges, officials from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, U.S. Department of Justice, and Department of Homeland Security, along with officials from Ghana’s Registrar General’s Department and Copyright Office will lead the training sessions and discussions at the West Africa Regional Training Center in Accra.

Ghana is a leading signatory to intellectual property treaties among Middle Eastern and African nations.

The U.S. Embassy, in partnership with USPTO is a long-term supporter of strengthening Ghana’s intellectual property protection and enforcement infrastructure to promote innovation and long-term economic growth.

This training follows Ghanaian officials’ visits to USPTO headquarters in the United States last year, where partners identified common areas of interest for future cooperation.

World Intellectual Property Day is celebrated on April 26 to recognise the importance of intellectual property protections that reward creators, protect innovation, and support legitimate economic growth.

In a post on its official Instagram page, the embassy eulogised his Apawu for her work in shaping the media landscape.

Among other things, the embassy applauded the journalist for a partnership to educate students of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) on combating misinformation and online abuse of journalists.

This they noted was during the COVID-19 pandemic when students were out of school but they managed to connect to communities through the power of radio.

“Today, we celebrate the incredible power of radio in connecting communities, fostering education, and combating misinformation. When children were out of school due to the Covid-19 pandemic, @USAID partnered with the Government of Ghana to launch a national radio program in English and 11 local languages that allowed children to continue learning.”

“The radio program reached children across Ghana and mitigated learning loss, particularly in reading competency, during that period. That’s the power of radio! We celebrate those who harness the power of radio for good and development like Emefa Apawu who has partnered us to educate students of the University of Cape Coast on tackling misinformation and online abuse of journalists,” parts of the post read.

They also highlighted some of her interviews that have impacted in the lives of many including the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield during the recent UN Peacekeeping Ministerial in Accra.

Emefa Apawu is a broadcast journalist, TV and radio anchor and producer with JoyNews and Joy FM, subsidiaries of The Multimedia Group.

In 2020, she won an award for Exceptional COVID-19 Reporting at the 25th GJA Awards (Ghana Journalists Awards).

She was one of the media personalities selected by the Volta Regional Coordinating Council in conjunction with the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) and the Eastern/Volta/Oti branch of the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) to champion the Visit Volta Campaign as a native of the region from Anfoega Akukome in the Volta Region of Ghana.

Organisation accuses US Ambassadors, IMF reps, of rogue diplomacies in Ghana http://34.58.148.58/organisation-accuses-us-ambassadors-imf-reps-of-rogue-diplomacies-in-ghana/ Tue, 29 Aug 2023 09:54:07 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2288498 The actions and statements of International Monetary Fund (IMF) representatives and the US Ambassador in Ghana have raised eyebrows and led to allegations of undermining Ghana’s sovereignty, cultural values, and economic stability.

A press release from The Dignified African Institute (TDAI) and signed by its Communications Director, Okatasi Mut Djeriwo (PhD) highlights the concerns of Ghanaians and questions the motivations behind these diplomatic actions.

The press release, dated August 30, 2023, emphasizes the historical wisdom ingrained in the African DNA and the respect accorded to nature and spirituality by African ancestors.

The release criticizes the activities of some foreign representatives in Ghana by invoking these deeply rooted cultural values.

TDAI has elucidated the ancient wisdom of African ancestors, who acknowledged the cyclical nature of the world and recognized divinity in all creation.

The release points out that these spiritual beliefs fostered a sense of responsibility and accountability in societies, negating the need for incarceration systems.

Read more: Organisation accuses US Ambassadors, IMF reps, of rogue diplomacies in Ghana

Shedding light on the historical injustices faced by Africa due to colonization and exploitation of its knowledge systems, the release cited recent happenings such as IMF manipulations and the LGBTQ+ discourse in Ghana.

The release accused the IMF of covert and overt manipulation in supporting Ghanaian governments in ways that have led to economic instability and hardship.

The IMF’s exoneration of the Ghanaian government’s actions draws criticism from TDAI, which questions the legitimacy of the IMF’s authority to intervene and calls for transparency regarding its motives in Ghana.

On issues regarding LGBTQ+ rights, TDAI highlights the US Ambassador’s involvement in a discourse that many Ghanaians find objectionable.

The Ambassador’s stance on LGBTQ+ rights, according to TDAI, contradicts the views of Ghana’s Parliament, religious organizations, and societal norms.

It therefore wonders whether the Ambassador’s actions could imply ulterior motives, potentially including the distribution of aid supplies packaged under the guise of humanitarian assistance.

The TDAI has therefore called for both the IMF and the US Ambassador to respect Ghana’s citizens, values, and sovereignty.

The organisation has also underscored the Ghanaian people’s aspirations for economic development, peace, and the preservation of cultural beliefs.

The press release also stresses that Ghana should be treated as a sovereign nation whose integrity must be upheld by foreign entities.

The Ghanaian government has not yet issued an official response to the press release.

However, the document has ignited public discourse across social media platforms and among various stakeholder groups.

Some citizens support the organization’s stance, viewing it as an assertion of national pride and dignity, while others express concerns about the diplomatic implications of such a public rebuke of foreign representatives.

The press release, with its strong language and calls for accountability, has sparked conversations about the role of international organizations in national affairs and the importance of diplomatic conduct.

US Embassy reduces wait time for non-immigrant visa appointments http://34.58.148.58/us-embassy-reduces-wait-time-for-non-immigrant-visa-appointments/ Fri, 21 Oct 2022 15:39:30 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2174547 The United States Embassy in Ghana says the waiting time for appointments after non-immigrant visa applications has been reduced.

The new waiting duration, according to the US Ambassador to Ghana, Virginia Palmer is now less than six months.

“That is down from two and half years when I arrived earlier this year. That is still too long but we are still taking steps to continue to reduce wait times, particularly for renewal,” she said.

The diplomat made these comments in a video posted on the embassy’s official social media accounts on Friday, October 21, 2022.

Addressing applicants, she explained that the plight of international students is also at the core of her office’s activities.

She said the embassy has also “worked to ensure that students got accelerated processing to facilitate their education before the start of classes.

“We processed a record 7,000 student visa cases in the last 12 months alone. That’s nearly 70% more than our previous record,” Mrs Palmer explained.

The ambassador revealed that a total of 32,000 visa applications were processed in the past years alone.

Against these numbers, more effort is being implemented to reduce the backlog of cases and reduce wait time further, per her assessment.

Virginia Palmer is also cognisant of the need for Immigration Visa applications to get some attention, adding that “you can be assured that reducing wait times for immigration visas is very much on our minds.”

Okudzeto Ablakwa petitioned US Embassy over students visa appointments http://34.58.148.58/okudzeto-ablakwa-petitioned-us-embassy-over-students-visa-appointments/ Tue, 10 Aug 2021 20:47:31 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1998998 The Member of Parliament for the North Tongu Constituency, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has written to the United States (US) Ambassador to Ghana, Stephanie Sullivan, to appeal for a special dispensation that will allow Ghanaian students who have gained admission to American universities to get visas to travel for their education.

The legislator said the appeal is premised on several petitions he has received from students who have complained that the earliest available visa appointment dates offered by the embassy are long and will make them miss deadlines for reporting to school.

He said the situation has “led to considerable anxiety and despair amongst many young Ghanaian students, which ostensibly undermines the long-cherished enviable reputation of the United States as a preferred academic destination for many Ghanaians.”

Mr Ablakwa said that although understandably COVID-19 has affected operations of various embassies, different embassies, including the US Embassy in Nigeria have introduced changes to their consular services to give priority to students who are seeking visas to travel for education.

“This development gives some solace that the US Embassy in Ghana is also capable of pursuing a similar path,” he said.

We’ve great respect for Africans – US Embassy in Ghana http://34.58.148.58/weve-great-respect-africans-us-embassy-ghana/ Sun, 14 Jan 2018 13:09:22 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=835881 The United States Embassy in Accra has made attempt to water down the anger of millions of Africans following revelation that Donald Trump insulted the integrity of Africans.
The US president is said to have called African countries, Haiti and El Salvador as “shitholes” in a meeting with lawmakers to discuss immigration issues.
The African Union as well as several heads of state on the continent including Ghana’s Nana Akufo-Addo have reacted angrily to the “insult”.
“The language of @realDonaldTrump that the African continent, Haiti and El Salvador are ‘shithole countries’ is extremely unfortunate. We are certainly not a ‘shithole country’. We will not accept such insults, even from a leader of a friendly country, no matter how powerful,” President Akufo-Addo tweeted on Saturday.
The US Embassy in Accra, Ghana also took to twitter to reaffirm America’s reverence for Africans.
“We have great respect for the people of Africa,” the Embassy tweeted on Saturday evening.
It further stated, “Our commitment to Ghana and all our African partners remains strong. It’s an honor for our staff to serve here alongside Ghanaians, and we deeply value our relationship with them.”
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump has denied reports that he called African countries shitholes.

US Embassy warns citizens against going to Nima, Avenor, Agbogbloshie http://34.58.148.58/us-embassy-warns-citizens-going-nima-avenor-agbogbloshie/ http://34.58.148.58/us-embassy-warns-citizens-going-nima-avenor-agbogbloshie/#comments Mon, 28 Aug 2017 10:06:02 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=438211 The US Embassy in Accra has warned its nationals to avoid some communities in Accra that have recorded violence recently.
A security message posted on the Embassy’s website on August 24, 2017, expressed concern about the growing crime in the Greater Accra Region especially Avenor, Sowutuom, Sukura, Agbobloshie, Nima and Ashaiman.
“The U.S. Embassy informs U.S. citizens that, due to credible reports of growing crime rates, U.S. Embassy personnel have been instructed to avoid the following precincts of Accra: Avenor, Sowutuom Sukura, Agbobloshie, Ashaiman (located in the Tema Region) [and] Nima (Except when traveling via the main highway past Nima).”
Police for the past weeks have been on high alert in Avenor to avert a possible bloodletting between articulated and spare parts dealers and workers of a private developer.
The two factions are laying claim to a piece of land said to be a state property. There is currently an interlocutory injunction stopping the two factions from developing the land.
Last week in Sowutuom, some angry residents threatened to attack Nigerians living in the community following the stabbing to death of a Ghanaian by a Nigerian, Peter Thompson, after accusing him of theft.
The Regional Police Command subsequently deployed a large number of police men to Sowutuom to curb any escalation of violence.
The other areas- Agblogbloshie, Nima and Ashaiman- which are notorious for periodic violence, have, however, not recorded any incidents in recent times.
That notwithstanding, the Embassy encouraged US citizens to “Review your personal security plans, remain aware of your surroundings, including local events, and monitor local news stations for updates.”
“Be vigilant and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security and follow instructions of local authorities.”

The donation, which included bats, balls and gloves, was expected to be used by the nation’s junior and senior national teams as they prepare for international competitions.
A statement from the U.S. Embassy and copied the Ghana News Agency on Sunday said the staff of the Embassy secured the support through a grant from the J. Kirby Simon Foreign Service Trust.
Jamiu Salami, Ghana national head coach of the GBSA said: “The equipment that was granted to us by the J. Kirby Simon Foreign Service Trust is going to help Ghana’s Little League team in a long way, as we all know that Little League players grow to become big league players,”
“The gift from the Americans will help in the development of baseball in Ghana,” Mr Salami said.
He said baseball and softball means a lot and expressed the hope that more collaborations would be made between U.S. Embassy and other American entities in the country.
He said “I will be most grateful if our dreams of producing Ghanaian players in Major League Baseball become a reality.”
Mr Jano Carlson, the U.S. Embassy Defense Attaché, said “just two months ago, we saw South Africa’s Gift Ngoepe become the first African-born player in Major League Baseball.
We would absolutely love to see Ghanaians also join the ranks of MLB players.
We’ve played some friendly games against Ghanaian teams and have seen first-hand that they are truly exceptional players with tremendous passion for these sports, Mr Carlson said.
Mr Carlson said the donation from the Trust to Ghana’s baseball and softball teams provides much-needed equipment to both teams and hopefully, it would help to grow the bilateral relation and to even attract new players.
The statement said the J. Kirby Simon Foreign Service Trust is a charitable fund established in the memory of Kirby Simon, a Foreign Service officer, who died in 1995 while serving in Taiwan.
The Trust makes small grants on a competitive basis to individuals affiliated with U.S. embassies and consulates around the world.
The Trust is also committed to expanding the opportunities for community service, professional fulfillment and personal well-being of Foreign Service officers, specialists and their families.
It is being funded with contributions from Kirby Simon’s colleagues, friends and relatives.

US Embassy does not owe ECG http://34.58.148.58/us-embassy-not-owe-ecg/ Tue, 16 May 2017 14:48:07 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=122001 The United States Embassy does not owes the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

This is according to Michael Adumatta Nyantakyi who is the General Secretary of the Public Utilities Workers Union of TUC (PUWU). has revealed that the US Embassy has no outstanding bills to pay.

He revealed that the US Embassy has no outstanding bills to pay ECG contrary to what is being alledged.

His comment comes after Minister of Energy, Mr Boakye Agyarko, in a stunning revelation, disclosed that the US Embassy in Ghana and telecom giant MTN Ghana, owe the ECG several million Cedis of power supplied.

While the exact outstanding amount owed ECG by the American Embassy with over 160 facilities across the country was not readily available, MTN on its part says it has an outstanding GHC35million debt to pay the state power distributer.

This development, Mr. Boakye Agyarko maintained may lead to its collapse if they are not remedied urgently.

But Mr. Nyantakyi on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Tuesday said the information put out by the Sector Minister is inaccurate.

“From the information I have, the US does not owe ECG. They have paid all their bills” he stressed.

However, he indicated that, the US Embassy requested for prepaid metres for their staff and other facilities but when they were asked to pay for that service, they did not get back to ECG again.

Mr. Nyantakyi could not fathom why the power distributor which is cash trapped will sit aloof and allow the US Embassy sit on such colossal amount of money.

“We need money as ECG so why will we decide not to collect money from the US Embassy when they are ready to pay” he quizzed.

The PUWU General Secretary said such wild allegation can only be borne out of the government decision to sell ECG.

Reacting to the MTN issue, Mr. Nyantakyi conceded that the telecom giant owed ECG but some reconciliations are being done to address the issue.

He, however, noted that, the government is to blame for the seeming collapse of ECG because MMDAs owe them.

Mr. Nyantakyi said there are bigger issue to make ECG operate efficiently, “and we thought that these are the issues which should occupy the mind and attention of the Minister”.
