During the election campaign, then-presidential candidate for the NDC, John Mahama, pledged to absorb fees for all Level 100 students within the first 120 days of assuming office.

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu reaffirmed this commitment during his vetting, stating that the government would ensure refunds were issued to students who had already paid their fees for the 2025 academic year.

“We intend to provide that money to the affected universities, at least to make refunds to all those who have already paid those fees,” he said.

However, despite the allocation of GHS499.8 million for the policy’s implementation, the government has now ruled out issuing direct refunds for this academic year.

Speaking on JoyNews’ NewsNight, Deputy Education Minister Dr. Clement Apaak explained that instead of receiving cash reimbursements, students’ accounts would be credited toward their second-year fees.

“The same students are going to be continuing. Rather than the physical reimbursement, going forward, as they go into their second year, what should have come to them to defer their academic fee for the first year will become a credit, which will then mean that as they go to second year, they wouldn’t have to pay because they have already paid for their first year,” Dr. Apaak said.

He emphasized that, for accountability reasons, the funds would be disbursed directly to the universities, not to the students.

“This approach helps us avoid logistical challenges and any potential impropriety,” he added.

Social media is abuzz with mixed reactions following a jilted lover’s death at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW).

Tertiary student deaths – both on and off campus – have become a troubling trend, with the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) recording a distressing four fatalities within a short space of five months.

The latest incident is the grim reaper’s visit to the UEW campus, sucking the soul of a first-year student who reportedly ended his life after discovering his girlfriend’s infidelity.

This is the umpteenth case of student suicides, with more than 50 promising lives lost from 2020 to the present day.

These are not mere statistics, but aspiring doctors, engineers, and leaders whose dreams, ambitions, and the promise of a better future – one that could have touched families and the country – have been tragically extinguished.

With families shattered, communities grieving, and the entire country grappling with the weight of such loss, MyJoyOnline revisits the voices silenced too soon, highlighting a broader call to address these incidents.

1. Rita Anane – University of Education, Winneba

The death of the young man on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, is not the first and may not be the last at the UEW.

In October 2023, Rita Anane, a female third-year student at the University of Education, Winneba, in the Central Region, allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself in her halls of residence

She reportedly hanged herself with a rope, with reports suggesting that she was heartbroken after a break-up with her boyfriend.

Her boyfriend was later arrested by the police to assist with investigations, following family members’ suspicions of foul play.

2. Priscilla Owusu – KNUST

Priscilla, a first-year Business Administration student at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), was hit by a speeding vehicle at Ayeduase, near the university’s main gate, in February 2024.

She was returning from evening lectures when the incident occurred. The driver fled the scene.

Despite being rushed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, she died due to severe head trauma. Her death sparked campus-wide protests demanding better pedestrian safety measures.

3. Joana Deladem Yabani – KNUST

In another incident involving two lovers, KNUST was struck by tragedy following the sudden death of Joana Deladem Yabani, a fourth-year Biological Sciences student.

In a statement released by university management, the institution confirmed that Miss Yabani’s lifeless body was discovered near the KNUST Disability and Rehabilitation Centre at approximately 5:00 a.m. on February 27, 2025.

Upon receiving the distress report, KNUST Security Services swiftly transported the body to the University Health Services, where medical personnel confirmed her passing.

Investigations led to the arrest of her boyfriend, 21-year-old Daniel Tuffuor, a final-year student also at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), to assist with investigations.

4. Saani Majeed – University of Education, Winneba

A final year student of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), died after a bizarre turn of events on Tuesday, September 7, 2021.

He died after a failed acrobatic move during celebrations.

Saani Majeed is said to have broken his neck while backflipping as part of a mini-performance while celebrating after writing his final exam.

5. Emmanuel Kwabena Tetteh – University of Ghana

Emmanuel, a final-year Political Science student at the University of Ghana, was found dead in his halls of residence in January 2024. He left behind a note describing his battle with depression and academic pressure. His passing shocked peers and staff alike, leading to renewed national dialogue on student mental health and the lack of counselling resources on university campuses.

6. Lydia Akorfa Doku – Ho Technical University

Lydia, a nursing student from Ho Technical University, died in a tragic road accident on the Accra-Ho highway in January 2024. She had just completed her internship at a hospital in Accra and was travelling home. A commercial minibus she was in collided with a broken-down vehicle that had no hazard signs. She died on the spot. Her classmates called her “the helper,” known for assisting patients even beyond her shifts.

7. Frederick Asamoah – KNUST

Frederick Asamoah, a 25-year-old student of KNUST, died in his room at Adoato, near Bantama, in 2021.

Frederick Asamoah was found with a noose around his neck, hanging from a ceiling fan in the early hours of Wednesday, August 18.

Confirming the news, an uncle of the deceased, Kofi Abrefa Busia, explained that Frederick returned home on Friday after the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) strike.

According to him, the family had supper together on the evening of Tuesday, August 17, 2021, after which Frederick went to bed at about 10 pm.

On Wednesday, August 18, the mother decided to give him some money before leaving for work.

There was no response after several knocks on the door, and the family called a carpenter to break the lock.

They were shocked to find the lifeless body of Frederick, who was bare-chested and wearing a pair of black shorts.

Unconfirmed reports suggested that Frederick lost a bet after wagering GHC 60,000, hoping to win and pay off a debt of GHC 200,000.

However, the uncle refuted the claims, indicating that Frederick “does not engage in betting”.

8. Lambert Frimpong – KNUST

A second-year student of KNUST was stabbed to death by his friend at Kronum-Kwapra in the Ashanti Region on Saturday, August 5, 2023.

It was after a brawl between the 24-year-old student and his friend over a missing t-shirt. The deceased, Lambert Frimpong, was accused of stealing the shirt, which he vehemently denied.

The misunderstanding led to Lambert being stabbed with a knife. He was declared dead after being rushed to the hospital.

9. Jim Ofori Twumasi – KNUST

Peter Twumasi, the former National Sports Authority Director General, sadly lost his first child, Jim Ofori Twumasi, who was a final-year student at KNUST on Thursday, February 15, 2024.

Jim Ofori Twumasi was in the economics faculty.

The devastating news was rife on the school’s social media handle, where heartfelt condolences were extended to the bereaved family.

Preliminary reports indicated that Jim Ofori Twumasi tragically collapsed while dining with his friends on campus.

Jim was an alumnus of the Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School (PRESEC) and was known by his peers and teachers for his dedication and academic prowess.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem morning show, he stated that these desks would serve as hubs for promoting tourism and creating job opportunities for the youth.

“We are trying to get a tourism desk at Legon because Legon itself is a whole tourism attraction. When people visit the campus for conferences, we need to take them to key tourist sites,” he stated.

He added that similar desks would be set up at the University for Development Studies (UDS), Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), and other universities.

“If we are able to do this, we can create more employment opportunities for the youth,” he noted.

KOBBY MENSAH ON TOURISM CAMPUS

Professor Mensah noted that their strategy aims to employ about 200 young people within the tourism sector by 2027.

Beyond the university tourism desks, he disclosed that GTDC is working on a major initiative called the “Ghana Tourism Marketplace” in collaboration with the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA).

“This will be one of the most ambitious tourism marketplaces ever. If we succeed, we can create numerous job opportunities and generate millions of dollars in revenue,” he said.

He stressed that the project is geared towards boosting domestic tourism and addressing unemployment, which he described as one of the biggest challenges facing the government.

“Our focus is to create employment spaces through tourism, and we are committed to making that happen,” he concluded.

The University of Ghana’s attention has been drawn to a BBC documentary entitled ‘Sex for Grades’ Undercover in West African Universities fully aired in the evening of October 7, 2019.  We would like to state unequivocally that the University places great importance on issues of sexual harassment and misconduct, and condemn any of such acts.

Given that commitment, the Business and Executive Committee of the University has taken a decision to interdict Prof. Ransford Gyampo and Dr. Paul Kwame Butakor, the two lecturers featured in the documentary to allow for further investigations into the matter.

In line with University regulations, the two will be invited by the Anti-Sexual Harassment Committee in the next few days to assist with further investigations into the BBC documentary.

While the University of Ghana believes sexual harassment is fundamentally about exploiting power imbalance and voicelessness, we also understand the harmful impact it has on individuals, families and institutions.

It is for this reason that the University has taken steps to encourage students and employees to report any form of sexual harassment and misconduct, and has also instituted measures to punish anyone found guilty of the offence.

In all instances where the University has been provided with information and/or evidence of sexual harassment or misconduct, our Anti-Sexual Harassment Committee has investigated the matter, interviewed the parties involved, and after making a determination, we have applied the appropriate sanctions as outlined in the policy, including dismissals.

The University will prosecute the current matter under investigation, in addition to all outstanding cases before the Committee.

We would like to state emphatically that the University of Ghana does not and will not shield any employee or student found to have engaged in sexual harassment or misconduct.  No member of the University is considered above the law.

The University would like to assure all members of the university community, including students, employees, our stakeholders and the public that it will continue to actively fight against sexual harassment/misconduct, and other acts of indiscipline.

Further, to assure members of the university community and the public that the University of Ghana will use the existing structures to handle all matters of sexual harassment and misconduct, while protecting the rights of the victims.

Meanwhile, members of the University community are reminded of the provisions of the Anti-Sexual Harassment Policy, and also encouraged to report any acts of sexual harassment and misconduct accordingly.

University of Ghana to ‘cough’ $160million for Africa Integras http://34.58.148.58/university-of-ghana-to-cough-160million-for-africa-integras/ Thu, 09 Aug 2018 06:04:58 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=1254781 The University of Ghana is said to have lost an arbitration in London in relation to the Africa Integras Project and therefore expected to pay $160 million to Africa Integras as termination costs.

In July 2014, under the leadership of the then Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ernest Aryeetey, the University of Ghana entered into a contract with Africa Integras, a private investment company with headquarters in New York, to construct five buildings for the university on a Build Operate and Transfer (BOT) basis.

The project was to consist of the construction of an expanded facility for the College of Humanities, a complex for the new College of Education, a new building complex for the College of Basic and Applied Sciences, a complex to house the Institute of Technology and Applied Science and a building for the College of Health Sciences to aid the university in relocating the medical school to the UG campus from its present location in the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

ALSO: First reshuffle: Otiko out, Oppong Nkrumah for Information Ministry

The project was structured as a 25-year Build, Operate and Transfer (BOT) contract but when the leadership of the university changed in January 2016, the new Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ebenezer Oduro Owusu sanctioned the project, citing issues with viability and favourableness with the project contract.

The $64 million infrastructure project then came to a standstill due to the disagreement between the current Vice-Chancellor (VC) and his predecessor over the viability of the project.

The matter then went for arbitration in London.

UG lose at London Arbitration
Graphic Online has gathered that the Arbitrator in the dispute between the University of Ghana and the project developers in what is generally described as the “Africa Integras project”, made a definitive and binding ruling in London on August 2, 2018.

READ: Photo: Woman arrested for asking hubby for money before she breastfeeds their baby

The ruling is said have dismissed the two claims by the University of Ghana and awarded termination costs of more than $160 million to the project developers.

The Arbitrator is said to have rejected the UG argument that the Concession Agreement signed by the two parties was not enforceable.

The University of Ghana had sought to present the agreement as not being enforceable, claiming that its own procedures followed in preparing the Concession Agreement were flawed and did not follow due process.

MORE: Mahiasem: 2018 -08 -08

The Arbitrator is said to have found nothing wrong with the process followed in preparing the Concession Agreement and concluded the project had been approved by the University Council in July 2014.

The ruling in London delivers a huge image blow to the University of Ghana and possibly a major financial loss to Ghana.

He said the upgrading of the Diploma in Basic Education (DBE) to the Bachelor of Education (B. Ed) degree, from October this year, would help equip teachers with the requisite skills and knowledge to improve performance and promote quality at the basic education level.

Prof. Occansey was speaking at the second graduation ceremony of the Untrained Teachers Diploma in Basic Education (UTDBE) at the St. Monica’s College of Education at Asante Mampong.

He said the Institute of Education was currently developing a new curriculum that would be used for the training of students in all the 46 public colleges which were going to be converted into universities.

Mrs Christina Sobotie, Principal of St. Monica’s college advised the graduates to exhibit the quality training they had acquired in the classroom and aspire to be all round disciplined teachers.

She urged them not to be content with their current certification but embark on continuous professional development and enrol on the new Bachelor of Education programme in order to be abreast with emerging trends in education.

Mrs Sobotie said inadequate academic staff as one of the major challenges facing the College.

She appealed for additional staff to ease pressure on the existing ones and also improve the quality of education delivery in the school.

Zimbabwe to build $1bn Robert Gabriel Mugabe university http://34.58.148.58/zimbabwe-build-1bn-robert-gabriel-mugabe-university/ Fri, 11 Aug 2017 17:49:40 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=385591 Zimbabwe is to build a $1bn (£770m) university dedicated to the man accused of leading his country to the brink of economic collapse, Robert Mugabe.
Jonathan Moyo, minister of tertiary education, told reporters it was a fitting tribute to the 93-year-old president’s “commitment to education and his exemplary leadership”.
It is unclear where the money will come from in a country where unemployment and poverty is endemic.

Economic output has halved since 2000.
Last year, more than four million Zimbabweans were in need of food aid due to drought. The country was once known as the breadbasket of southern Africa.

‘Populism that defies logic’

Despite this, the cabinet has agreed to spend $800m building the new university in Mazowe, 35km (20 miles) outside the capital Harare.
Another $200m has been set aside for an endowment fund for research and innovation at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe University, which will focus on science and technology, Mr Moyo said.
He would not be drawn on where the funds were coming from.
The announcement of the new university was met with derision from opposition parties, which hope to end Mr Mugabe’s 37-year reign at next year’s general elections.

“This is populism that defies logic,” said Obert Gutu, a spokesman for the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC). “It is meant to stroke Mugabe’s ego because we know this government is broke.”
Zimbabwe already struggles to pay for education – as well as public services and infrastructure like roads and hospitals – spending 90% of the country’s annual budget on wages.
The MDC says the money would be better spent on Zimbabwe’s existing universities, where students face crumbling infrastructure and a lack of accommodation.
According to state media, Mr Mugabe has seven earned degrees and 11 honorary degrees.
He is a trained teacher and after coming to power in 1980, his government massively increased the provision of state education to the previously disadvantaged black majority.
Zimbabwe recently had the highest literacy rate in Africa, at 90% of the population.
Mr Mugabe’s wife Grace was awarded a controversial PhD from the University of Zimbabwe in 2014.

Don’t pay increased fees yet – USAG to students http://34.58.148.58/dont-pay-increased-fees-yet-usag-students/ Mon, 07 Aug 2017 07:11:31 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=366591 The University Students Association of Ghana (USAG) has called on all students of public tertiary institutions not to pay their recently increased fees for the 2017/2018 academic year until Parliament approves the increase.
The President of the association, Emmanuel Kwarteng Frimpong told Citi News that the current fees are too exorbitant.
According to him, the association has received numerous petitions from students over the increment in fees and his association is demanding the breakdown of fees so each student knows what services they are paying for.
“Until Parliament goes through the fees, gives the breakdown and approves for students, we should withhold payment, just in fulfillment of the constitutional provisions (Fees and Charges Act 793),” he stated.
The Fees and Charges Act 2009 (Act 793), which was amended by a legislative instrument (LI2228), 2016 seeks to safeguard the public against arbitrary and haphazard charges and levying of students by universities.
This Act mandates vice chancellors to seek approval from Parliament, through the National Tertiary Council, Mr. Frimpong reminded.
“It is a humble plea to the Vice Chancellors of Ghana that it is only prudent, fair and appropriate that that we get the breakdown of what exactly we are paying for so that we will have the firm knowledge of what we are being charged and what we are supposed to pay.”
Protests over the fees began in July, with continuing students of the University of Ghana complaining about the rise in their fees for the 2017/2018 academic year. Each year, the university increases fees based on prevailing inflation rate plus 2%.
The Minister of State in charge of Tertiary Education, Professor Kwesi Yankah, recently urged the vice-chancellors of Ghana adhere to the Fees and Charges Act 2009 (Act 793).
He noted they had resorted to fixing fees and other levies without recourse to the law.

University of Energy inaugurates $1.2m ground station http://34.58.148.58/university-energy-inaugurates-1-2m-ground-station/ Fri, 07 Jul 2017 05:44:46 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=275591 The Earth Observation Research and Innovation Centre (EORIC) of the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) has inaugurated a US$1.2 million COSMIC-2 Satellite Ground Station (GS) on Tuesday at the Sunyani campus.
The GS, funded by the United States of America (USA) National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Taiwan National Space Organisation (NSPO) is for weather monitoring in the Tropics and it could predict or forecast weather for four days ahead.
It is the only one in Africa and among eight others in Taiwan, Guam, Hawaii, Honduras, Brazil, Kuwait, Mauritius and Australia “to receive improved atmospheric data that promises to increase weather forecast skill”.
Mr Richard Ullman, COSMIC-2 Programme Manager from NOAA explained COSMIC as “Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere and Climate”, saying it was a joint partnership programme between the USA and the Taiwan NSPO.
“The NSPO would be operating a spacecraft, FORMOSAT-7 from their command station in Taiwan and the United States is responsible for organising the international partnership of ground stations”, he said.
Mr Ullman said the USA and Taiwan programme began with COSMIC-1/FORMOSAT-3 launched in April 2006 and a decade later, COSMIC-2/FORMOSAT-7 is an improved version with special focus on the tropics.
The COSMIC-2, he added consisted of a set of six satellites that would collect temperature, moisture and ionospheric information over the tropical regions worldwide by measuring the refraction of radio waves through the atmosphere.
Mr Ullman explained each observation event took about three minutes, saying “the result is called an atmospheric profile”.
He indicated “the COSMIC-2 system will make as many as 6000 of these profiles everyday “and added that  everyday over 600 of the profiles would  be brought down to earth at the GS.
Mr Ullman explained UENR was selected among other factors because of its geographical location and the existence of EORIC  and the inroads being made in its operational activities.
Dr Amos T. Kabo-bah, the head of the EORIC expressed the trust that the Centre  could help Ghana and Africa to leverage both “in-situ and satellite data” for improving decision-making in the areas of health, agriculture, ecosystems, climate, disasters, weather and Biodiversity.
He announced that they had been able to host a recently ended second international  Africa Global Earth Observation System of Systems (AfriGEOSS) symposium, the Centre was on its roadmap to becoming a Centre for Excellence for supporting Ghana in its “One-District, One Factory” initiative, the African continents “Agenda 2063”and the African Union’s “Space Policy and Strategy”.
Professor Harrison Kwame Dapaah, the Vice-Chancellor said the Centre had both physical infrastructural and other necessary challenges as it was in dire need of a building, good and fast internet access, an electric generator as well as funding for research activities and additional staff because of the  COSMIC-2 project and several others.

High court shuts down University of Education http://34.58.148.58/high-court-shuts-university-education/ http://34.58.148.58/high-court-shuts-university-education/#comments Tue, 13 Jun 2017 17:43:38 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=179691 The University of Education has been shut down following an injunction from a Winneba High court.

The injunction affects all four satellite campuses of the university in Kumasi, Mampong, Winneba and Ajumako.

The court at a hearing Tuesday, granted an injunction request by a former Assemblyman Kofi Kwayera who has argued against the legality of the University’s Council.

He has said the council’s term of office expired in 2013 and therefore asked that the Vice-Chancellor and other senior members of staff be restrained from exercising their duties.

A declaration that the extension of the mandate of the Governing Council of the 1st Respondent by the 2nd respondent to stay in office to perform such functions as a properly appointed council was in breach of Section 8 Act 672.

A declaration that all decisions taken by the defacto body of persons who constituted themselves as Governing Council is null and void and of no effect.

A declaration that the contracts awarded to Sparkxx Gh Ltd, Paabadu Construction and C-Deck, were done in breach of the Procurement Act (Act 663).

A declaration that all payments made to Lamas Ltd were done without the express written consent of the Ghana Highway Authority, and in breach of the Memorandum of Understanding and same must be refunded.

A declaration that the illegally appointed Principal Officers of the 1st Respondent willfully misappropriated public funds by failing to put to public tender for the construction of the North campus road and thereby causing financial loss to the state.

The presiding judge upheld the reliefs being sought by the plaintiff pending the final determination of the case.

In response, the university in a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer Steve Kamassah directed campuses of the University to be closed until the hearing of the substantive case on Friday.

The exact relief sought by the former Assemblyman includes;

Thousands of graduates risk their certificates rendered invalid if the court goes on to give judgement in favour of the plaintiff represented by Effutu MP Afenyo Markin in whose constituency the university is cited.

All decisions including signatures of the governing council on certificates could be invalidated if the plaintiff’s suit finds favour with the court.

14 year old graduates from US University http://34.58.148.58/14-year-old-graduates-us-university/ Tue, 16 May 2017 06:53:30 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=120511 A 14-year-old physics major has become the youngest person ever to graduate from Texas Christian University.

Carson Huey-You was among more than 2,000 students getting degrees Saturday at the Fort Worth school founded in 1873. He started at TCU in 2013 when he was 11. He also has minors in Chinese and math.

Huey-You tells the Fort Worth Star-Telegram his favorite thing about college has been getting to learn things he never thought about, things he never knew existed and things he might not even think about thinking about.

He also says he’s learned how to deal with “some real hard classes” and get over the disappointment of a poor score on a test.

The self-described “normal dude” wants to work on getting graduate degrees in quantum mechanics.
