Cleaner remanded for stealing police rifle in Wenchi http://34.58.148.58/cleaner-remanded-for-stealing-police-rifle-in-wenchi/ Wed, 08 Jan 2025 17:24:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2490956
The Wenchi Magistrate Court, presided over by His Worship Issa Abdul Wahab, has remanded 28-year-old Joseph Adinkra into police custody for two weeks over allegations of stealing an AK-47 service rifle with serial number AE 405323.

Adinkra, a civilian employee of the Ghana Police Service who works as a cleaner at the Wenchi Police Station and resides in Akrobi, a suburb of Wenchi in the Bono Region, was arraigned following the incident.

Detective Inspector John Agyare, the prosecutor, recounted that on January 3, 2025, at around 5:20 a.m., a police officer returned the rifle to the charge office after a night patrol.

The weapon was duly recorded and stored under the counter alongside other firearms. Shortly after, Adinkra arrived at the charge office to begin his morning cleaning duties.

The counter Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) and the station orderly briefly stepped out to allow him to clean the area thoroughly.

During their absence, Adinkra reportedly seized the opportunity to steal the rifle, along with a loaded SMG magazine containing 30 rounds of ammunition valued at GH¢52,834.99.

The prosecutor explained that Adinkra concealed the weapon under his clothes, walked past the duty officers at the veranda without raising suspicion, and later hid the rifle in an old brown Ecola bag found in a tricycle parked near the charge office.

He then returned to the charge office to complete his cleaning duties.

At approximately 5:40 a.m., the station’s armourer arrived to secure the returned rifles in the armoury. Upon cross-checking, he discovered that the rifle and magazine were missing. Chief Inspector Seth Agyei, the complainant and the station officer, was immediately informed and filed an official report.

During the subsequent investigation, Adinkra initially denied any involvement but later confessed and led investigators to the tricycle, where the rifle and ammunition were retrieved.

In his caution statement, he admitted that a friend had promised him GH¢7,000 if he could procure a weapon for use in illegal mining activities.

The prosecutor emphasized the gravity of the offense, noting that investigations are ongoing to determine the identity of the individual who intended to purchase the weapon.

Adinkra has been charged and brought before the court, which has adjourned the case to January 21, 2025, for further proceedings.

3 suspects in court for stealing from South Africa’s President http://34.58.148.58/3-suspects-in-court-for-stealing-from-south-africas-president/ Tue, 08 Oct 2024 11:45:36 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2457985 Three people accused of breaking into South African President Cyril Ramaphosa’s game farm and stealing $580,000 in cash that was stashed in a couch appeared in court Monday and had their case postponed until next month.

The alleged theft, which happened in 2020 but came to light two years later, saw Ramaphosa mired in scandal and accused of trying to hide the alleged crime and the money’s existence.

Ramaphosa was accused by opposition parties of tax evasion, money laundering and breaking foreign currency laws over the cash, which was in U.S. dollars.

Ramaphosa denied wrongdoing and said the cash was from the legitimate sale of buffaloes at his Phala Phala game farm. He was cleared of any wrongdoing by the Reserve Bank and a public watchdog.

However, an independent report raised questions over the cash, and Ramaphosa survived an impeachment vote in Parliament in 2022 when his African National Congress party used its majority to block the motion.

Two opposition parties have filed papers with South Africa’s highest court requesting that impeachment proceedings against Ramaphosa be revived.

That case will be heard next month.

The three suspects, Imanuwela David, Ndilinasho Joseph and his sister Floriana Joseph, face charges of housebreaking and theft, according to prosecutors.

David is in custody while the Joseph siblings are free on bail.

The scandal, sometimes referred to as “farmgate,” came as Ramaphosa was seeking reelection as his party’s leader at the end of 2022.

He was reelected as president of the ANC and then won a second term as South African president this year, although only with the help of opposition lawmakers after the ANC lost its 30-year majority.

Nine opposition parties joined the ANC in a broad governing coalition following the May 29 election, quietening some of the criticism of Ramaphosa over the Phala Phala scandal.

The prosecution stated that Mr Mabhutso locked his children in the house and left for his workplace in the company of his wife. He secured all his property, including the US$10,800, which was stashed under the bed in his bedroom.

“At around 10 am, Tekeshe was seen arriving at Mr Mabhutso’s house by the complainant’s eight-year-old son. Tekeshe was holding a blue box in his hands. Tekeshe inquired whether the complainant and his wife were present through the window and was told they were away,” said prosecution.

Tekeshe then allegedly ordered the child to open the kitchen window, which the child did. Tekeshe then entered the house through the window and proceeded to the bedroom, where he allegedly stole the money before leaving through the same window.

After taking the money, Tekeshe reportedly ordered the child to wipe off his feet and fingerprints using a cloth. Mr Mabhutso later returned home and discovered that his money had been stolen. He then filed a report with the police, leading to Tekeshe’s arrest. Nothing was recovered from the accused.

Tekeshe, Manica Post reports, is currently out on bail and awaiting trial. He faces a charge of unlawful entry into premises. This case has shocked the community, especially considering Tekeshe’s position as a bishop in the African Apostolic Church.

He was handed the sentence by the Bole District Magistrate court presided over by His Worship Adward Essel on Thursday, February 23.

The accused person was charged with unlawful entry, causing damage, conspiracy and stealing, all of which he pleaded guilty.

According the prosecutor, Chief Inspector Abdualai Awuni, the accused person broke and entered a business woman’s room at night at about 11:00pm with his friend Ayuba who is on the run and took the woman’s hand bag and removed her mobile phone and an amount of GH 3,050.

Upon the noise from his friend in the room to search more bags, the victim woke up and started shouting for help.

Neighbours chased and arrested suspect Isahaku but unfortunately his friend fled the scene.

Consequently, the accused person was sentenced to four years imprisonment with hard labour with the court agreeing he has not learned from his two years jail term which he just finished serving in December 2022.

The presiding judge added that the four years will be enough to change him and also serve as deterrence to the youth who go round to monitor their victim’s sleeping time so that they can steal.

CCTV footage captures man stealing over GHS5k from hotel in Takoradi http://34.58.148.58/cctv-footage-captures-man-stealing-over-ghs5k-from-hotel-in-takoradi/ Wed, 10 Aug 2022 11:53:47 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2147828 A man has been busted in the twin city of Sekondi-Takoradi in the Western Region for stealing from a hotel he booked to spend time with his girlfriend.

It is believed he has perpetuated similar acts in other hotels in the city, whereby he makes reservations to stay in the night but later turns up midnight to steal from the safe or drawers of such hotels after the receptionist has taken a break or night off.

The name and age of the alleged thief is unknown yet but it’s believed he is in his early 30s.

His latest action of thievery, however, occurred last Saturday, but luck eluded him as the CCTV of the hotel captured him right in the act of stealing.

This was announced in a Facebook post of ace broadcast journalist with Connect FM in Sekondi – Takoradi, Paa Kwesi Simpson.

Below is the exact post on his Facebook page:

“This guy goes to a popular Hotel in Sekondi/Takoradi on Saturday, August 6, 2022 with his girlfriend, gets to reception to book a room and pays.

“He leaves for his room with the girlfriend and wakes up deep at dawn and clandestinely maneuvers his way to the reception to realize the reception has left there to take a small sleep.

“He quickly dashes to where the monies are kept ( because he monitored while booking) and takes some money.

“He comes for the second time to take another bunch of money and then the third time.

“All the amount adding up to 5,200 cedis.”

A source said the thief did not know he was captured on CCTV camera, so the hotel owners replayed the footage, made a manhunt for him and got him arrested on Tuesday, August 9, 2022.

“Worse of it, many others have come to testify against him of duping them including one drinking bar operator who claims the suspect came to steal her drinks, drank much and went to sell the rest at a ridiculously cheaper rate.”

He pleaded not guilty to the charge of stealing but was convicted after full trial by the court, presided over by Ebenezer Osei Darko.

Prosecuting, Chief Inspector Peter Amponsah, said the complainant is Makafui Kwasi Damalie, the Kasoa Branch Manager of the Consolidated Bank of Ghana, and owner of the car.

He said on Wednesday March 23, 2022, a driver of the bank sent Mr Damalie’s Kia Sorento 4×4, registered GX 730T21, to a washing bay at Kaemebre, a suburb of Kasoa, and left the keys with the attendant to return the car after washing.

He said at 1500 hours, the convict, under the guise of being sent by the complainant, went to take the key from the attendant at the washing bay and made away with the car after paying GHS40.

The prosecutor said Mr Boateng, the convict, in May 2022, also went to Richmens Washing Bay near Ofaakor and stole another car with the same modus operandi.

Luck, however, eluded him when he attempted to move the car and he was apprehended and sent to the Ofaakor Police Station.

He was later identified as the same person who earlier stole the complainant’s car.

Prosecutor said Mr Boateng denied the offence during investigations, but evidence was established against him and he was charged with the offence of stealing.

The court heard that Charles Boadi, a farmer at Kawie, a village near Sawla in the Savanna Region had made attempts to sell the turkey he stole from his father’s poultry farm.

The prosecutor, Chief Inspector Abdulai Awuni, briefing the court, stated that on June 6 at about 10:00 am, the complainant, also a farmer, accosted master Boadi over suspicion that the turkey he had put on sale was his missing bird.

In his defense, he is said to have confessed that the turkey was indeed stolen, but not from the complainant but rather it was from his father’s farm.

The complainant was not convinced, hence handed him over to Sawla Police who detained him for investigation.

He was arraigned Thursday morning, but he was saved by his father who confirmed that the turkey was indeed his, after he was marched to the police station for identification.

However, master Boadi’s father is said to have pleaded with the judge to sentence his son for being a miscreant in their community.

Based on his plea, the court, presided over by His Worship, Andrew prince Cudjoe, in his final judgement, sentenced the accused to six months imprisonment for dishonesty and theft.

He explained the sentence was to reform him and also serve as a deterrent to others.

Soldier kicked out of military for stealing colleague’s ATM card http://34.58.148.58/soldier-kicked-out-of-military-for-stealing-colleagues-atm-card/ Wed, 07 Jul 2021 13:07:04 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1983548 A British Army soldier has been kicked out the military after nicking a colleague’s bank card – to buy FIFA points for his Xbox.

Private Lewis Billam bought £216 worth of the virtual currency used in the popular football video game.

Bulford Military Court heard that the 27-year-old bought three lots of £71.99 FIFA points packs on his colleague Private Megan Martin’s card.

The £71.99 packs give players 12,000 points which can be spent in the game.

The points can buy ‘FUT packs’ which allow players to build a squad of footballers or ‘FUT Draft’ which lets players pick the best fit for each position from a five-player draw.Pte Lewis Billam, of the British Army, was discharged from service after stealing a colleague's bank card to buy FIFA points for his Xbox and another colleague's card for a spree at Tesco+4

Aside the initial stealing, he is said to have stolen another colleague’s ATM card at a party for a shopping spree.

Pte Billam was found out when everyone who attended the party in March 2020 was rounded up and asked to show their Xbox account history – if they had one.

When Pte Billam showed his account, it had clearly been used to make the three transactions and he was then found in possession of the card.

In August 2019, Pte Billam approached Lance Corporal Joshua Gibbon and asked to borrow his card to buy cigarettes and a drink, promising to return the card later.

But instead of cigarettes and a drink, Pte Billam bought something worth £101 and another item worth £126.

Judge Advocate Alistair McGrigor told Pvt Billam at Bulford military court that he would be dismissed from the military as actions undermined the ‘comradeship of service life’

The court heard that Pte Billam’s excessive consumption of alcohol had led him to have little or no money in the past.

The Judge told Pte Billam that he would be dismissed from the military as it was clear the army no longer wanted to keep him on.

He said: “Soldiers who steal from colleagues undermine the respect and comradeship that is the basis of service life.”

Pte Billam, of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, told the court he ‘sincerely apologised’ for what he had done after previously pleading guilty to three charges of fraud.

He said: “The things that I did were not acceptable and I do sincerely apologise.”

According to Beauty Emefa Nartey, checks by Corruption Watch, Ghana indicated that the boy had already served 10 years out of the jail term with no justice served.

Speaking on the Corruption Watch segment on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem show, Beauty Emefa Nartey of the Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition (GACC) explained that the boy was arrested together with some alleged robbers, but Mohammed’s sentence was as a result of poor legal systems and supervision.

“Normally when it comes to juvenile cases, the maximum sentence is three years with the judgment mostly declared at a juvenile court after which the suspect is made to serve in a Borstal Home.

“In Abdallah’s case, it was unlawful for the judge to pronounce the judgement together with the adults though the case was heard together and due to these circumstances, Abdallah may now come out into society as a bitter man and will commit more serious crime without any consideration,” she warned.

Human Rights Lawyer, Francis Xavier, on the same show, stated that the case could best be handled by the Ghana Legal Aid scheme, but the scheme is crippled due to lack of funds.

“The Legal Aid Scheme is supposed to take care of such cases because the justice system sometimes does not promote the case of the needy and the vulnerable but over the years, the Legal Aid’s budget has been nothing to write home about.
