Puma terminates four-year contract with the Athletics Federation of Nigeria http://34.58.148.58/puma-terminates-four-year-contract-with-the-athletics-federation-of-nigeria/ Thu, 05 Aug 2021 14:40:13 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1996587 German sportswear manufacturing giants PUMA has terminated its four-year contract with the Athletics Federation of Nigeria.

According to PUMA, the termination of the deal was a result of Nigeria’s athletes’ inability to wear the brand at the ongoing Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

It was learnt that several efforts were made to give the athletes the PUMA kits, including shipping bags of kits with 40 items each to Tokyo through the Nigerian Embassy in Japan but to no avail.

PUMA terminated the contract in a letter dated Wednesday, August 4, 2021, and signed by the company’s director Manuel Edlheimb.

Meanwhile, the contract was signed on July 24, 2019, in Doha by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) board under Ibrahim Gusau.

It was expected to expire in 2022 and has been the genesis of a major crisis that the athletics body is battling to date.

A significant section of the deal stated that Puma will supply kits to all age categories to Nigeria’s athletics team for four years.

The contract also includes monetary rewards for Nigerian athletes who wear the sportswear during medal presentations at the Olympics games — with gold medalists earning $15,000, silver medalists getting 5,000 while a bronze medal will attract $3,000.

However, the contract has led to an ongoing legal battle between the Sports Ministry and the factional board of AFN.

In addition, Gusau, alongside Sunday Adeleye, technical director of the body, were dragged to court by the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) for the alleged diversion of over $75,000.

Consequently, the ministry failed to allow the Nigerian athletics team to wear the Puma branded apparel at the ongoing Tokyo Olympics, arguing that it’s “a subject of a criminal investigation.”

Reacting to the latest development, Puma, in a letter addressed to the AFN, announced the sudden termination of the contract — about two years after it was signed.

The letter, dated August 4, added that the premature ending of the deal is due to Nigerian athletes’ inability to wear the brand at the ongoing Olympics.

“We are referring to the licensing and sponsoring agreement signed between our company and your federation,” the letter read.

“As a direct consequence of the recent developments, particularly at the Tokyo Olympic Games 2020 and pursuant to clauses 9.2 and 7.3 of the Agreement, we hereby terminate the Agreement with immediate effect.

“Puma especially declares to be discharged from any or all obligations towards all stakeholders involved and reserves all rights against these entities and individuals.”

GFA rubbishes Puma deal report http://34.58.148.58/gfa-rubbishes-puma-deal-report/ Tue, 25 Jul 2017 15:31:21 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=329261 Ghana Football Association (GFA) has described as malicious, reports circulating on social media that the federation has failed to render proper accounts in an apparel deal with sports kit manufacturer, Puma.
Atinka TV and Atinka FM reports last week regarding the Puma apparel contract with the GFA shocked the sporting fraternity with sports pundits and the general public pointing accusing fingers to the GFA for failing to reveal the full details and specifics of the contract which has been in existence since 2005.
Atinka FM’s Saddick Adams in a TV show revealed a document covering a draft agreement between the GFA and Puma of which a portion revealed that Puma paid the GFA a fixed amount of €900,000 every year.
He further accused the GFA President, Mr. Kwasi Nyantakyi, as the only person with the knowledge of how the funds from the agreement are received and disbursed.“Aside the supply of apparels, the German kit company pays the Ghana FA an “ANNUAL FIXED FEE” of €900,000. First tranche of € 425,000 in June, and the remainder before 31st of December every year, “part of the document read.
But in response to the claims, the GFA in a press release has directed the general public to discredit the reports. The release according to the GFA is ‘maliciously false and a calculated attempt to cause damage to the GFA and Mr. Kwasi Nyantakyi.’
GFA disclosed that the contract with Puma is not the preserve of the President of the federation alone. The GFA further indicated that minutes from the meeting and other related engagements with the Executive Committee members have not been concealed because the FA believed in accountability.
“The financial gains from our contract with Puma are paid directly into the accounts of the GFA and captured in our annual audited accounts. The audited accounts are also made available to our members at Congress. All funds from Puma – and indeed all our sponsors are received directly by the GFA through our accounts and properly accounted for as can be seen in our audited accounts by the Auditor General of Ghana”. The statement read.
Meanwhile, the GFA has warned that it will pursue legal action over the reputational damage suffered by the federation and its President, Mr. Kwasi Nyantakyi, over the alleged report.
