Speaking on Joy FM’s Newsfile on Saturday, July 6, he highlighted the dangerous implications of ignoring public sentiment and historical lessons.

He made these comments in reaction to the Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin’s call on leadership to pay more attention to public concerns about leadership in order to avoid a replica of the protest by young people in Kenya.

Referencing a warning from Archbishop Duncan Williams about the growing anger on the streets, Dr Kennedy noted that the conduct of public officials seemed to be provoking potential explosions of public unrest.

“The conduct of our public officials seems to be daring the streets to explode and I fear that when it does explode, it will be too late to do anything about it,” he stated.

While applauding Mr Afenyo-Markin’s recent remarks, he urged Parliament to take further steps towards accountability beyond the talk.

Drawing parallels with historical events, Dr Kennedy cautioned against complacency, citing the example of Chile in 1973, which experienced a sudden and destabilising coup despite a century of uninterrupted democracy.

He also referenced the Arab Spring and revolutions driven by economic discontent, underscoring the cyclical nature of history and the risks of ignoring underlying economic grievances.

“Those who ignore history are condemned to repeat its tragedies,” he warned.

Brazil politician egged at her wedding http://34.58.148.58/brazil-politician-egged-wedding/ Mon, 17 Jul 2017 10:00:38 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=302571 A Brazilian politician has accused left-wing protesters of physically and verbally abusing her wedding guests over her family’s support for President Michel Temer.

Maria Victoria Barros, 25, is a member of the state assembly in Parana and daughter of Mr Temer’s health minister.
Hundreds of demonstrators gathered outside the church where the ceremony was taking place on Friday evening.
Pelted with eggs, she had to leave the church in an armoured vehicle.
The lavish ceremony attracted the state’s political elite, including her father, Ricardo Barros, and her mother, Cida Borghetti, Parana’s deputy governor.
At least 30 members of the Brazilian Congress were invited to travel from the capital Brasilia for the wedding in the Parana state capital, Curitiba.
Demonstrators carried anti-government signs and shouted slogans at Ms Barros, accusing her of being a “coup plotter”.
Footage posted on YouTube shows security guards opening umbrellas to try to protect the bride and groom as they left the Church of the Rosary.

A detachment of riot police was eventually called in to protect the newly-weds and their guests.
Ms Barros said the protest was linked to her mother’s recent decision to run for state governor and had been “financed by left-wing parties and unions”.
She regretted the attacks against some of the guests but added: “This is the price of democracy”.
The incident is another illustration of how split and bitter Brazilian politics has become since the impeachment last year of Mr Temer’s predecessor, Dilma Rousseff.
During the impeachment trial, Ms Rousseff described the move as a right-wing coup, supported by her vice-president at the time, Mr Temer.
Supporters of her Workers’ Party were further angered by the conviction of former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Wednesday to nine years and six months in jail for corruption.
Lula has rejected claims that he received an apartment as a bribe in a corruption scandal linked to state oil company Petrobras.
He has appealed against the verdict, saying the trial was politically-motivated, aimed at preventing him from running for office again next year.
Lula served eight years as president until 2011.
Federal Judge Sergio Moro, from Parana state, ruled that he could remain free pending an appeal.

Ethiopian politician jailed for 6.5 years for ‘encouraging terrorism’ via Facebook http://34.58.148.58/ethiopian-politician-jailed-6-5-years-encouraging-terrorism-via-facebook/ Fri, 26 May 2017 08:55:17 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=137921 A federal high court in Ethiopia has sentenced politician Yonatan Tesfaye to six years and six months in prison for planning, preparing and encouraging terrorism via his Facebook page in 2015.

The former spokesperson for the Blue party was found guilty of the charges earlier this month after his arrest in December 2015 for igniting the Oromo protests that resulted in the death of thousands of people.

The sentence follows an appeal by his lawyer Shibiru Belete Birru for a minimum sentence as the charges carried up to 20 years prison sentence, local media Fana Broadcasting Corporate reported Thursday.

After his arrest, Tesfaye was held incommunicado during the pre-trial period until May 2016 when he was charged with terrorism under the country’s anti-terrorism law.

He has maintained his innocence throughout the trial based on the 2009 law that prescribes jail terms for anyone who publishes information that could induce readers to commit acts of terrorism.

Yonatan Tesfaye’s sentencing follows the conviction of journalist Getachew Shiferaw who was also arrested in late December 2015 and charged in May 2016 with involvement in the operations of the outlawed anti-government group Ginbot 7.

That charge was dismissed but he was found guilty on Wednesday of public provocation to commit “crimes against the external security and defensive power” of the state.

He will be sentenced Friday.

Ethiopia has been accused of regularly using security concerns as an excuse to stifle anti-government statements and clamp down on media freedoms.
