A-G reviews docket on Afenyo-Markin’s alleged assault of policeman http://34.58.148.58/a-g-reviews-docket-on-afenyo-markins-alleged-assault-of-policeman/ Mon, 10 Nov 2025 11:02:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2598179 The Office of the Attorney General (AG) is reviewing a case file involving Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, following allegations of assault that arose during a public protest earlier this year.

Deputy Attorney General Justice Srem Sai confirmed the case’s status in a post on Facebook. “I can confirm that the docket on the case — The Republic v. Alexander Afenyo-Markin — is at the Office of the Attorney-General awaiting prosecutorial review and decision. The case involves a complaint of assault,” he wrote.

The incident occurred on Monday, May 5, 2025, during the ‘Save the Judiciary’ demonstration, organized by civil society groups and opposition figures to protest perceived political interference in Ghana’s judiciary.

Eyewitnesses reported that a confrontation at the entrance of Parliament House escalated into a physical altercation, during which the Effutu Member of Parliament was accused of assaulting a uniformed police officer stationed at the gate.

The A-G’s update follows the referral of the case by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service for study and advice, after receiving a docket from its Special Investigation Unit (SIU) following an investigation.

Preliminary analysis of video footage reportedly shows the MP striking G/Cpl. Forson Abel, a police officer stationed at the Tesano District, while officers attempted to enforce a restricted boundary marked with metal barricades.

In line with parliamentary procedure, the CID formally requested clearance from the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin, before proceeding with the investigation.

NPP Youth Wing condemns police assault on TaTU students http://34.58.148.58/npp-youth-wing-condemns-police-assault-on-tatu-students/ Wed, 17 Sep 2025 09:26:53 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2579402 The National Youth Wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has condemned what it describes as “arbitrary and undemocratic” police violence against students of Tamale Technical University (TaTU), calling for accountability and the swift restoration of calm on campus.

In a statement signed by National Youth Organizer Salam Mustapha, the Youth Wing said it was shocked by viral videos showing police officers allegedly assaulting unarmed students and student leaders who were protesting to demand better welfare and greater accountability from university authorities.

“The use of arbitrary force on unarmed students and their leaders is unacceptable, undemocratic, and must be condemned by all Ghanaians,” the statement said.

The group argued that a professional and well-trained police service should have handled the situation through dialogue and restraint rather than force.

“Tamale Technical University is a citadel of knowledge, and such matters should be handled with diligence,” it added, while urging calm among students and management.

The Youth Wing also called on the Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, to “immediately call the Northern Regional Police Command to order” and ensure that officers involved in what it described as “sordid and despicable violence” are held accountable.

It also stressed that Ghana’s democracy cannot thrive if young people are “brutalized for exercising their rights,” pledging solidarity with the students and calling for immediate steps to restore order so academic work can resume safely.

The incident has sparked wider conversations about police conduct and the right to peaceful protest on university campuses, where students have increasingly been pushing for better infrastructure and administrative accountability.

Midland Brutality: K-NET responds to “slow internet” claims by bank http://34.58.148.58/midland-saga-we-are-not-to-blame-k-net/ Sun, 22 Jul 2018 16:27:40 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=1222221 K-NET, a leading African telecommunications company has said it cannot be blamed for the act of brutality meted out to a nursing mother at the Shiashie branch of Midland Savings and Loans Company.

A statement issued by the management of the company and copied to Adomonline.com said claims by the owner of the Savings and Loans that, their backup service from K-NET was not fast enough does not represent the true state of affairs.

Below is the full statement:

STATEMENT BY K-NET ON OUR SUPPOSED INVOLVEMENT IN THE POOR SERVICE QUALITY RENDERED BY MIDLAND

We notice with concern, reports making rounds on social media and some mainstream media that are attributed to the Owner of Midland Savings and Loans which sought to blame the recent happening at his company’s outfit on K-NET who are the backup internet service providers to Midland.

The Owner of Midland has, in those reports suggested that “our backup service, K-NET was not fast enough so this caused delays throughout our branches”.

We wish to state unequivocally that the Owner’s position was wrong and does not represent the true state of affairs as regard K-NET’s dealings with Midland. We make these interventions on the following grounds:

1. That K-NET as a Telecoms service provider has clearly laid out reporting systems for “downtime” and “poor service” reporting. These include the use of e-mails, WhatsApp and phone calls to our 24Hr/7 Days a Week Call and Monitoring Centre. In this case, our reporting records show that Midland has, at no point reported any issues of downtime or poor service (slow internet speed) to K-NET. Our live monitoring did not indicate a downtime or slow connectivity of service to Midland.

2. If the media reports and accounts of the assaulted lady at the Midland premises is anything to go by, it will mean that the problems with the backup service as suggested by the Owner would have taken 72 hours or more and would have warranted some reporting through any of our channels.

3. That K-NET, as was confirmed by the Owner of Midland, is a backup internet service provider. It is indeed, farfetched to blame the incident that allegedly occurred on the premises of Midland, on a service provider.

4. That most importantly, K-NET has taken the trouble, since the emergence of these reports, to do an audit of the system and have not identified any faults or challenges with service to Midland, especially over the time span within which the incidence at Midland is said to have taken place.

We, therefore, wish to place on record that be it a connectivity issue or any other problem that may have hampered the delivery of service by Midland, K-NET as a backup service provider had absolutely no contributions to same.

We, however, sympathise with Midland for the challenges they have gone through as a business in the last few days. We also sympathise with the Customer who was assaulted and condemn, in no uncertain terms, the actions of the police officer in question.

K-NET remains committed to delivering quality service to its clients.

Thank you.

Management, K-NET
