He explained that issues of land ownership and traditional leadership are outside the Police Service’s mandate and should therefore be referred to the appropriate traditional channels for resolution.

“Any chief who approaches the Police Commander with land issues should be directed to seek my intervention,” the Asantehene stated. He added that if the Police Commander becomes aware of any ongoing land dispute, he must immediately bring it to the Asantehene’s attention for action.

Otumfuo also urged DCOP Akoto to focus on strengthening security across the region, intensifying efforts to curb theft and other social vices, and ensuring law and order to promote lasting peace and stability in the Ashanti Region.

The advice was given during a courtesy call by the new Police Commander at the Manhyia Palace on Wednesday, November 5, 2025.

The outgoing Regional Police Commander, COP Emmanuel Teye-Cudjoe, expressed gratitude to His Majesty for his guidance and support during his tenure and formally introduced DCOP Arthur Osei Akoto as his successor.

She was my confidante – Otumfuo pays emotional tribute to late Asantehemaa http://34.58.148.58/she-was-my-confidante-otumfuo-pays-emotional-tribute-to-late-asantehemaa/ Thu, 18 Sep 2025 20:02:01 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2580302 The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has delivered a moving tribute to the late Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III, describing her as a “confidant” whose counsel guided him through the weight of kingship.

In a tribute read on his behalf by business magnate Sir Sam Jonah during the Dote Yie ceremony, Otumfuo reflected on the unique bond he shared with the Queen Mother.

“For me personally, she was my confidante. In moments when the burdens of kingship pressed heavily upon me, I could turn to her not as the Asantehemaa but as my sister, menua panin. She had the rare ability to speak to me as both a mother and a friend,” he said.

He praised her wisdom and thoughtful guidance, noting, “Her words were never reckless, never shallow. They were words that came from a deep well of experience and wisdom.”

The solemn ceremony at the Manhyia Palace brought together prominent Ghanaian figures, including former Presidents John Agyekum Kufuor and Nana Akufo-Addo, Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, and former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who joined the Asantehene in honouring the late Queen Mother.

The Asantehemaa passed away on August 7, 2025, at the age of 98.

We will take decisive measures to halt dollarisation of the economy- BoG Governor http://34.58.148.58/we-will-take-decisive-measures-to-halt-dollarisation-of-the-economy-bog-governor/ Thu, 24 Jul 2025 10:41:18 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2559189 The Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG) Dr. Johnson Asiama has assured that decisive measures will be taken to help halt dollarisation of the economy.

He revealed that the Bank of Ghana is currently working with relevant agencies in the country to ensure that the Ghana cedi is the only legal tender for all financial transactions.

The Governor revealed this when the management members, board of directors and two deputy governors of the Bank of Ghana paid a courtesy call on the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II at Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.

Dr. Asiama appealed to the Asantehene to support the Bank of Ghana in its campaign to educate the public on the cedi as the only legal tender in Ghana.

He stated that the eminent personality of the Asantehene can complement the efforts of the central bank in its drive to make the public understand that the cedi is the only legal tender in the country.

“We have always been preaching to Ghanaians that the cedi is the only legal tender in Ghana and we believe that we can also seek the support of the Asantehene”, Dr. Asiama said.

“The Bank of Ghana is working hard to firmly stabilise the cedi and we also believe that should also help in dealing with this challenge”, he added.

Enforcing cedi’s legal tender status

Dr. Asiama disclosed that the central bank is adopting different approaches to appeal to the public to voluntarily educate the people on the importance of widely accepting the cedi as the only legal tender.

“The Bank of Ghana apart from enforcing the law, will also use moral suasion to ensure that all transactions and sale of goods are priced in the cedis in the country”.

He explained to the Asantehene that “without a dominant legal tender like the Ghana cedi, no central bank, no matter how technically capable, can execute its mandate successfully”.

“If we all embrace the cedi, that will go a long way to stabilise the local currency and help smoothen their work on the monetary side”.

“In countries like Kenya and South Africa, it would be unthinkable for a citizen to reject the local currency in favour of the US dollar”.

He stated that building currency confidence is not just a function of policy but a function of collective behavior.

Ghana’s IMF programme and monetary interventions
The Governor used the opportunity to brief the Asantehene on some monetary measures taken as well as the current state of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme with Ghana.

“We took over at a very challenging time, when it comes to the economy and even how the IMF programme was performing, but we have taken some tough measures to stabilize things” he added.

Touching on the Bank of Ghana’s upcoming 60th anniversary of the cedi, Dr. Asiama pledged that the central bank will engage the office of the Asantehene in its celebration.

“We will formally send an invitation to the Asantehene to participate in the programmes that we have lined up”.

on his part, the Asantehene reminded the Bank of Ghana of its critical role on reducing inflation and also making the Ghana cedi stable.

He commended the Bank of Ghana for working with the Finance Ministry to stabilize the economy as well as the cedi.

“I can see there is strong coordination between the monetary and fiscal side and that is commendable”, he said.

He appealed to the Bank of Ghana to improve lending to the private sector, especially small business.
“How is the Bank of Ghana working with the fiscal side to improve lending and pay outstanding arrears, especially when it comes to paying contractors” he quizzed.

He enquired whether, the country’s reserves are in a strong position to support payments due investors from next year and in 2027.

The minister, accompanied by Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene, Chief Director of the Ministry Mrs. Wilhelmina Asamoah, and Senior Technical Adviser Hon. Betty Krosbi Mensah, paid a courtesy call on the Asantehene at Manhyia on Wednesday after inspecting both projects.

During the engagement, Minister Adams highlighted the urgent need for re-grassing the Baba Yara pitch, repairing floodlights, and refurbishing spectator stands to meet CAF licensing requirements ahead of upcoming continental competitions involving Asante Kotoko and Bibiani Gold Stars.

He also raised concerns about the Nyinahin Youth Resource Centre—intended to be a 5,000-seat multi-sport facility—which has been stalled since November 2024 after the contractor abandoned the site.

Otumfuo, praising the minister’s proactive approach, pledged to rally support from major mining firms to ensure the timely renovation of the Baba Yara Stadium and the completion of the Nyinahin project.

“I will lead the fund-raising drive among our major mining companies to ensure Baba Yara is match-ready and the Nyinahin complex is finally completed,” the Asantehene assured, requesting the Ministry to submit detailed cost estimates urgently to facilitate immediate action.

Minister Adams welcomed Otumfuo’s support, stressing that the partnership between traditional leaders, government, and private stakeholders is critical to preserving and advancing Ghana’s sporting infrastructure.

He noted that technical teams would finalise the required estimates within days and that a joint task force would be formed to monitor progress and ensure transparency throughout the process.

The meeting underscored the Ministry’s renewed commitment to reviving key sports facilities across the country and bolstering Ghana’s readiness to host high-profile sporting events.

Otumfuo not responsible for investing in Asante Kotoko – Former Club Chairman http://34.58.148.58/otumfuo-not-responsible-for-investing-in-asante-kotoko-former-club-chairman/ Thu, 19 Jun 2025 19:26:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2546410 Former Asante Kotoko chairman, Herbert Mensah, has stated that it is not the responsibility of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the life patron of the club, to financially support the team.

His comments came after the club’s playing body, Interim Management Committee (IMC), and technical team presented the 2024/25 FA Cup trophy to the Asantehene at the Manhyia Palace on Wednesday.

Speaking on behalf of Otumfuo, Mr. Mensah—currently serving as President of Rugby Africa—emphasised the need for those in charge of the club to take full responsibility.

“You must get back up, be at the World Club Championship, and bring the glory back,” he said. “Otumfuo has invested; it is not Otumfuo’s job to invest in Kotoko.

“It is Kotoko that you achieve, and those who hold it must invest. It is an honour, it is a privilege to hold Kumasi Asante Kotoko,” he added.

Herbert Mensah, who led the club from 1999 to 2003, is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the club’s recent history.

Asante Kotoko, following their FA Cup victory, will represent Ghana in the 2025/26 CAF Confederation Cup.

We used to run errands together – Mahama shares childhood ties with Otumfuo http://34.58.148.58/we-used-to-run-errands-together-mahama-shares-childhood-ties-with-otumfuo/ Tue, 03 Jun 2025 09:18:55 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2541187

President John Mahama has opened up on his long-standing relationship with the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, revealing that their bond dates back to their childhood days in Ringway Estates, Osu, Accra.

Speaking when the Asantehene paid a courtesy call on him at the Jubilee House on Monday, Mr. Mahama recounted fond memories of growing up opposite the home of Nana Aduhene, where Otumfuo also spent time during school holidays.

“Our relationship goes back to when I was a child. I was a little boy growing up in Ringway Estates, Osu, and my father’s house was directly opposite Nana Aduhene’s house. Nana Aduhene’s children—Kojo Botsuo, Kwame Nkrumah and others—were our friends,” he said.

Mahama also revealed that Ato Ahwoi and Kwame Ahwoi were part of Nana Aduhene’s extended family and frequently visited the estate, adding to the vibrant environment.

“There was another of Nana’s children who came to spend holidays—we used to call him ‘Kweku Kweku’. It turned out that he was Otumfuo,” he recalled.

He noted that Otumfuo and the older boys would often send him and his peers on errands. “They were a bit older than us, so they used to send us to buy ice cream and all kinds of things for them,” he said with a smile.

Mr. Mahama said he was surprised years later when Otumfuo Osei Tutu II was enstooled, believing at the time that he was from Sefwi.

“When I became a minister and they were enstooling the next Otumfuo, I said, ‘But this is Aduhene’s boy—he’s from Sefwi. How does he become the paramount chief of the Ashantis?’”

He explained that Otumfuo had been deliberately placed in the care of the Omanhene at Ringway for royal grooming. “Apparently, his uncle sent him to be groomed as a king. That’s why he used to come to Ringway on holidays,” he said.

I ignored intelligence not to go to Bawku – IGP http://34.58.148.58/i-ignored-intelligence-not-to-go-to-bawku-igp/ Mon, 12 May 2025 12:42:47 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2534255 The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohonu, has revealed that he defied security intelligence advising him against entering Bawku during a recent surge in violence, saying he could not abandon his men who were under attack.

Addressing Otumfuo Osei Tutu II on May 10, 2025, as part of ongoing efforts to mediate peace in Bawku, the IGP recounted the dire situation that prompted his decision to visit the conflict zone despite the risks.

“Recently, I visited Bawku when our men were seriously attacked. There was a threat of small, serious attacks on their lives. When I got to Bawku, the whole place was in flames,” IGP Yohonu said.

“Everywhere was burning. All our personnel, where they were staying, was set on fire. And so that led me to rush to Bawku.”

According to him, while en route, intelligence gathered at Bolgatanga indicated that proceeding further would be dangerous. But he decided to continue the journey regardless.

“When I got to Bolga, the intelligence I had was that it would be difficult for me to enter. I said, my men are already trapped there, so how can I end my journey in Bolga? What am I going to tell my other colleagues in general? So I proceeded with my team, and then we went.”

He said he later engaged with the Bawku Naba and called for forgiveness and dialogue to ease tensions between security forces and the community.

“We agreed that we should also talk to his people, to let peace prevail. Because we, as security officers, in the course of doing our work, we may go wrong somewhere. We need national forgiveness for what happened.”

IGP Yohonu expressed appreciation to Otumfuo for his readiness to support peace-building efforts in the area, stating that the Asantehene’s planned intervention had brought a sense of relief to the security agencies.

“When we heard of your plan to help resolve the problem in Bawku, that brought a lot of relief to us. The military, police and all other security personnel are very happy for your intervention.”

The Asantehene’s mediation forms part of a broader national initiative to restore calm in Bawku, which has experienced recurrent outbreaks of ethnic and chieftaincy-related violence.

The launch took place during the 25-year celebration of the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Foundation and Fundraising Gala at the Otumfuo Jubilee Hall, Manhyia Palace.

According to Mr. Kufuor, the endowment fund is designed to insulate the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Foundation from uncertainties that may affect the pursuit of its vision and purpose in the future.

“An endowment fund is more than a financial instrument; it is a promise that the mission and values we hold will endure. It is a commitment to sustainability, excellence, and empowering future generations,” he stated.

The former President added, “The success of the fund will build the foundation’s versatility and resilience.

“I see the success of this fund as a significant pathway to contributing quality human resources to nation-building, inclusively.”

He therefore appealed to NGOs, philanthropists, and other agencies to contribute generously to make the endowment fund a historic success.

“Now, the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Foundation has taken on more responsibilities, adding thematic areas such as health, water, sanitation, culture, and heritage to its portfolio, to partner with like-minded individuals to steer as much change as possible for the entire community of Ghana,” John Agyekum Kufuor said.

He applauded the Asantehene and the Foundation’s board for the substantial work being done, saying in Twi “we appreciate you and the good work you do for the Ashanti Kingdom and Ghana, long live Nana”.

The former President noted that the measure of a man is what he does with power.

“There cannot be any doubt that Otumfuo has used his royal mandate to ably serve his nation and continue to shape and light the lives of many, benefiting from his largesse,” he emphasized.

Full details: Illegal mining spree on Manhyia-linked concession http://34.58.148.58/full-details-illegal-mining-spree-on-manhyia-linked-concession/ Fri, 07 Mar 2025 16:35:43 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2512504 It remains to be seen what steps the government will take after the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, publicly lamented that illegal miners had overrun a gold prospecting concession belonging to him.

He revealed that unauthorized mining was taking place on the concession without his knowledge, raising serious questions about who is responsible for the environmental destruction from the illegal mining operations, which have devastated the banks of the Tano River.

“I have heard that the concession Ayisi [former chief executive of the Minerals Commission] granted me has been overrun by illegal (galamsey) miners. But I don’t even know the place,” he said on February 14, 2025, when the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, visited him at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.

“The concession was given to me, and I intended to develop it, only to hear that illegal miners had taken over,” Otumfuo Osei Tutu said. “If I am accused of engaging in galamsey as a traditional ruler, what can I say when I do not even know where the place is?”

His remarks have brought The Fourth Estate’s scrutiny to Bodukwan Holding Company Limited, the entity holding the concession, and its links to the Manhyia Palace.

Investigations by The Fourth Estate suggest that despite having only a prospecting license, extensive mining has taken place on the concession, raising legal and environmental concerns.

Bodukwan Holding Company Limited applied for a prospecting license on June 2, 2023, to explore for gold in Moseaso, Odumase in the Western Region. Six months later, the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources approved the request, granting the company three years to conduct exploration over an area the size of 250 football pitches. A significant portion of this concession overlaps with the Tano River, a key water source for communities in Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire.

Prospecting licenses allow companies to conduct preliminary exploration but do not permit mining activities. Yet, satellite imagery reviewed by The Fourth Estate reveals widespread mining on the concession – evidence that illegal operations are taking place on the concession.

Environmental Degradation and Legal Violations

Ghana’s mining laws prohibit activities that degrade the environment, particularly near water bodies. While the law does not explicitly require a 100-meter buffer zone, both the Minerals Commission and Water Resources Commission have advised that mining should not take place within this range to prevent pollution.

In 2021, the government declared riverbanks no-go areas for mining, a directive emphasized by then-President Nana Akufo-Addo and former Lands Minister Samuel Jinapor.

Despite these restrictions, The Fourth Estate found that Bodukwan Holding lacks key regulatory approvals, including an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) permit and a Water Use Permit from the Water Resources Commission (WRC). The Minerals Commission has also refused to provide a list of companies with operating permits, making it difficult to verify Bodukwan’s compliance status.

Who Owns Bodukwan Holding?

Incorporation records from the Office of the Registrar of Companies show that Bodukwan Holding is closely linked to Manhyia Palace.

The company’s beneficial owner, Nana Duah Bonsu, serves as a co-director alongside Mujeeb Rahman Ahmed, a lawyer for Manhyia Palace, and Julia Ama Adwapa Amaning, widely known as Lady Julia, the wife of the Asantehene.

Beyond its mining interests, Bodukwan Holding is also the parent company of the Bodukwan Multifruit Processing Factory, which processes mangoes from its farms in the Nkoranza North District.

When contacted, Mujeeb Rahman Ahmed denied any involvement in illegal mining. He insisted that Bodukwan Holding had not begun operations at its site near Bibiani, let alone engaged in mining.

This was before the Asantehene’s recent public remarks about the invasion of illegal miners on the concession.

“If anyone is there, we need to deal with them,” Mr. Rahman told The Fourth Estate. “We have no knowledge of any such activity. If someone is mining in our name, it is wrong. We are not aware of it.”

Who Could Be Responsible?

Environmental activists argue that once a company obtains a concession, it is legally responsible for protecting it from illegal mining.

Kwaku Afriyie, Technical Director of WACAM, an environmental advocacy group, maintains that if mining is taking place on a concession with only a prospecting lease, then the company is in breach of the law.

He stressed that companies are required to report illegal activities to the Minerals Commission and security agencies and are responsible for securing their own land.

Under Article 18 of the Constitution, Mr. Afriyie noted, every individual has the right to protect their property.

He also pointed out that if a company remains silent while its land is used for illegal mining, it raises questions about whether it is benefiting from the activity or is simply being negligent.

His concerns were echoed by Sandow Ali, Director of Mining at the EPA, who emphasized that companies cannot operate without securing four essential permits: a license from the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, an EPA permit, an operating permit from the Minerals Commission, and a water use permit from the Water Resources Commission.

He made it clear that obtaining a ministerial license alone does not grant the right to begin mining and that any activity without the full set of approvals is illegal.

Will the Government Intervene?

With clear evidence of mining activity on Bodukwan’s concession and a lack of regulatory compliance, the question remains: will the government take action?

The Asantehene’s frustration highlights the broader challenge of illegal mining in a country where even high-profile concessions are not spared from galamsey operations.

Ensure fairness in Black Stars call-ups – Otumfuo urges Sports Minister http://34.58.148.58/ensure-fairness-in-black-stars-call-ups-otumfuo-urges-sports-minister/ Sat, 15 Feb 2025 18:46:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2504828 The Asantehene, Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II, has called on Sports and Recreation Minister, Kofi Adams, to ensure fairness in player selections for the Black Stars.

Otumfuo made these remarks during Kofi Adams’ visit to the Manhyia Palace on Friday, February 14.

Expressing his concerns over the decline of Ghana’s senior national team in recent years, he attributed the struggles to nepotism within the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

“The Black Stars have been disgraceful these days. You have to get the Black Stars on the winning track,” Otumfuo challenged Kofi Adams.

“Make sure the technical team invites players who deserve to be in the national team. No other person should be allowed to bring their players to the team.”

Ghana’s football fortunes have dwindled following consecutive underwhelming performances at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The Black Stars recently failed to qualify for the 2025 edition in Morocco, marking another setback for the team.

Despite this, the team will have an opportunity to bounce back when they face Chad and Madagascar in their upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers in March.

Otumfuo demands swift justice for late Asante Kotoko fan http://34.58.148.58/otumfuo-demands-swift-justice-for-late-asante-kotoko-fan/ Sat, 15 Feb 2025 18:45:29 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2504860 Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has called for the immediate arrest of those responsible for the killing of Asante Kotoko supporter, Francis Frimpong, also known as Nana Pooley.

The tragic incident occurred at the Nana Kronmansah Park during the Matchday 19 fixture between Nsoatreman FC and Asante Kotoko.

So far, seven individuals, including Nsoatreman FC owner and former Labour and Employment Minister, Ignatius Baffour Awuah, have been arrested in connection with the case.

During a visit to the Manhyia Palace on Friday, February 14, Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams was urged by Otumfuo to ensure that all those involved are brought to justice.

“The incident is so worrying. Why should this happen in the first place?” Otumfuo questioned. “A family has lost a young and vibrant man due to someone’s wickedness. No one should lose his life because of a game.”

He emphasized that regardless of where the crime took place, the culprit must be identified and apprehended to uphold the rule of law.

“You premeditate to kill an individual because of a statement he made about causing your relegation? No one should put such authority in his hands to commit such a crime.

“This shouldn’t have happened. Institute a thorough investigation to arrest the perpetrator. Why hasn’t he been arrested until now? He is still around and yet the law enforcement agencies haven’t gotten him. Arrest him to deter others,” he added.

In response to rising concerns over hooliganism at football matches, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has introduced new matchday safety protocols, which all clubs are required to follow.

Avoid politics of insults, focus on policies – Otumfuo tells Alan http://34.58.148.58/avoid-politics-of-insults-focus-on-policies-otumfuo-tells-alan/ Wed, 02 Oct 2024 21:11:19 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2455993 The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has advised Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, leader and presidential candidate of the Movement for Change, to avoid engaging in politics of insults and instead focus on promoting his policies as he campaigns ahead of the December 7 polls.

During a visit to the Manhyia Palace on Wednesday, October 2, Alan Kyerematen sought the support of the people in the Ashanti region and introduced his running mate to the Asantehene.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II encouraged him to base his campaign on policy discussions, emphasizing the importance of refraining from insults while reaching out to voters.

“All I will say is that Alan Kyerematen is my grandson and I will support his vision. I will urge you to clearly explain your policies to Ghanaians so they understand what you’re capable of. Focus on your campaign and your messages and desist from politics of insult.”

The Asantehene further urged political parties to properly explain their policies to the general public and called on them to implement such policies when voted to prevent voter apathy.

“People will be losing confidence in political parties if a majority of them say they will not take part in elections and that will greatly affect the affairs of political parties. We are hoping that the political parties are able to implement their policies if they are given the nod, so there can be peace and stability in the country.”

Amidst the widespread calls for measures to be put in place to fight illegal mining, the Presidential candidate of the Movement for Change outlined his strategy aimed at addressing the canker.

“As part of my policies, I will ensure that the government does not maintain the sole ownership of the country’s mineral resources. I will make sure to involve the Chiefs as well, by making them the gold trustees of mineral rights in Ghana” Mr. Kyerematen added.

He made these remarks when the National Democratic Congress(NDC) Vice Presidential candidate, Prof Jane Naana Opoku paid a courtesy call on him on Friday.

“NPP has chosen my grandson, NAPO as the running mate; indeed he is my grandson but that does not mean this palace has voted for NPP or NDC.  This palace is for everyone and is equally opened to the NPP just as the NDC,” he said.

The 90-year-old who has reigned for 54 years was reprimanded for disregarding and disrespecting the sacred tradition.

The chief has been stripped of his title due to his attempts to distort historical truths for personal gain, violating both statutory and traditional laws.

Otumfuo announced the decision on Monday, September 2, 2024, during a meeting of the Kumasi Traditional Council at the Manhyia Palace.

“Nana Opia, you knowingly and deceitfully invoked the Great Oath, despite being fully aware that the stool did not rightfully belong to you. You deliberately challenged its ownership, attempting to exploit your long reign to conceal your illegitimacy.

“However, by misusing the Great Oath for personal gain, you have forfeited your claim to the stool. Your actions have left you no choice but to relinquish the throne,” Otumfuo declared.

In a symbolic gesture, the chief’s traditional slippers were promptly removed, marking his destoolment by custom.

The action follows a comprehensive report presented to the Council on August 15, 2024, which revealed that the Aduana Clan, to which Nana Opia Mensah II belongs, is not the legitimate royal house, but rather the Oyoko Clan holds the rightful claim to the throne.

Asante Kotoko: Otumfuo to name new Board of Directors http://34.58.148.58/asante-kotoko-otumfuo-to-name-new-board-of-directors/ Tue, 30 Jul 2024 13:42:15 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2427522 Owner of Asante Kotoko, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, is expected to announce a new Board of Directors ahead of the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League season, according to a report by Nhyira FM.

This follows the dissolution of the management team led by Nana Yaw Amponsah and the Board of Directors headed by Dr Kwame Kyei at the end of the 2022/23 Ghana Premier League season.

In their place, Otumfuo appointed an Interim Management Committee (IMC) to oversee club operations.

The current IMC includes former Ghana national team coach Kwesi Appiah and Prosper Ogum Narteh, who also serves as the team’s head coach.

Other members of the committee are: Emmanuel Newton Dasoberi, acting as Administrative Manager, and Nana Apinkra Akwasi Awuah.

Under the IMC’s guidance, Asante Kotoko successfully completed the 2023/24 Ghana Premier League campaign at the 6th position with 49 points.

However, the establishment of a new Board of Directors is mandated by the Club Licensing Committee, which prohibits an Interim Committee from managing the club for more than one season.

As the Board of Directors prepares to be appointed, an Executive Board Chairman will lead the forthcoming Management Team, which is still to be determined.

The reports also indicate that, the new Board will consist of no more than six members.

The 2024/25 Ghana Premier League season is set to commence on September 6, with Asante Kotoko beginning their campaign with an away match against Karela United at the Aliu Mahama Stadium in Tamale.

Kwesi Yankah: Otumfuo’s visit and Legon’s nightmare http://34.58.148.58/kwesi-yankah-otumfuos-visit-and-legons-nightmare/ Tue, 11 Jun 2024 09:30:53 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2407541 Saturday, 8th June, history was made when Otumfuo Osei Tutu II came down to Accra to pay a rare courtesy call on the Ga Mantse, Nii Tackie Teiko Tsuru II.

The ceremonial pomp and pageantry displayed in a dialogue of cultures was a beauty to behold, even as the nation was consoled in the search for peace, tolerance, and harmony in an election year.

I watched the grand ceremony on TV and heaved a sigh of relief, looking back on a dim past when a fuming Labadi chief and elders reprimanded Legon for daring to invite Otumfuo to the University of Ghana, Labadi land.

The year was 2003. Otumfuo had spent just a few years on the Golden Stool. I was Hall Master of the great Mensah Sarbah Hall, whose credentials at the time included ‘the only hall of residence named after a human being.’

Our dream as Sarbah alumni was to propel the University’s youngest Hall far ahead of its peers; and one ‘plot’ we hatched was to invite ‘King Solomon’ to be the Life Patron of Sarbah Alumni, and lead a fundraising ceremony towards the construction of a Viking Alumni Hostel.

The new hostel, which was eventually opened for student occupancy in 2023, has a haunting history founded on inter-ethnic tension.

Why a new hostel? Legon had a huge accommodation problem, and Sarbah alumni were anxious to show the way by lightening the burden on the Government.

Our delegation to visit Otumfuo at Manhyia and extend the invitation was a high-powered one, including the following: Kwaku Kyei, former IGP who was alumni president; Nana Adade Boamah (Tom Sawyer) Kofi Dua Adonten; Yaw Afriyie Nketia, Gloria Akuffo, Ursula Owusu, Betty Mould Iddrisu, Adu Gyimah (Castro), Lee Atoms Ofei, Ivy Heward Mills, Agyeman Badu-Akosah, Yaa Osei Brempong, Margaret Insaidoo, Maxwell Opoku Agyeman, Rosina Kyeremateng, Nana Twum (king of mpusuo) etc., indeed a whole bus load of distinguished Vikings. Happily the Viking delegation was graciously received by Otumfuo at Manhyia, and even pampered with a sumptuous dinner.

But why Otumfuo Osei Tutu as Special Guest of Honour?  He had hit the ground running as the new King of Asante in 1999, having shown remarkable interest in education. Furthermore, his inner circle was a virtual Viking enclave.

His wife Lady Julia (Amaning) was a proud Viking; the occupant of the Asante silver stool, Nana Osei Bonsu II (alias Gyimah Kessie) was a Viking, and so was Otumfuo’s special aide, Mawerehene, Dr Baafuor Hyeaman Brantuo.

Even though Father for all, Otumfuo was a Viking by osmosis, so we proclaimed. Our diplomatic move was indeed meant to enhance the aura and dignity of Mensah Sarbah Hall, plus this other benefit we only whispered:  Our impending ceremony being a fundraising event, incidental windfalls could drop as we rubbed shoulders with the kingdom of gold.

While we were all set for the historic event came the shocking news: the Labadi stool would not tolerate the visit of Otumfuo!

An anti-climax was in the offing; the well-publicized event could be called off, and the Hall hit with the shame of setting our targets too high. But why would a visit by Otumfuo to an autonomous university or any part of Ghana be considered a breach?  Did the King of Asante need a visa to visit Accra? While the answers were not clear, we sent a delegation to the Labadi chief and elders; strategically among our envoys was Professor Irene Odotei herself from Labadi. The Labadi palace was crowded that day, peering eyes flaming with rage.

The query posed was simple: why had Otumfuo Osei Tutu been invited for a role that the Chief of Labadi could play? Our delegation exchanged curious glances; but the bouquet of answers we rattled was unacceptable: ‘Otumfuo is our Chief patron…the Chief of Labadi has also been invited…the hall has hosted other chiefs in the past, etc. Those ‘booklong’ responses were not enough to cool tempers. We returned to Legon frustrated but did not surrender.

Days of negotiation continued between Legon authorities and Labadi youth and elders. Quietly behind the scenes were moves by former Regional Minister for Ashanti, Hon Kojo Yankah.

Then came a major initiative by ‘King Solomon,’ who sent a special emissary to whisper in the ears of Labadi chief, ‘my own brother’ in the words of Otumfuo. Grounds started softening, only for tensions to rise from further agitation by the Labadi youths.

The sod-cutting event eventually came on, but under a thick cloud of tension and tight national security, with angry Labadi youths lurking at the margins and reporting proceedings by phone. I was the master of ceremonies that day prancing back and forth, and narrating the Asante history of conquest which had given way to a war against illiteracy! Otumfuo had taken Legon by storm that day, with a huge retinue of chiefs and elders coming down from Kumasi. The University of Ghana had somehow survived the fury of Labadi, leaving only a residue of suspense.

If Otumfuo Osei Tutu paid a successful courtesy call on Ga Mantse last Saturday, it can be said that we have come a long way as a Republic.

The King of Asante after all needs no entry visa for a formal visit to Accra.

Legon still remembers.

At a ceremonial tree planting event held at the Kumasi Golf Course to kick off the 2024 edition of the Green Ghana Day in the Ashanti Region on Friday, Otumfuo planted a wawa tree to signify his long-term belief in the project.

Accompanied by the Chairman of the National Green Ghana Planning Committee, Benito Owusu-Bio, the Ashanti Regional Minister, Members of Parliament, Forestry Commission Regional manager, traditional leaders, amongst others.

His Royal Majesty inspected previously planted trees and urged Ghanaians to participate in the event.

In a brief remark, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II emphasized the importance of protecting and sustainably managing natural resources, aligning with the government’s climate action plans.

He cautioned against the destruction of forest covers and river bodies and commended the government for the steps to protect the country’s vegetative cover.

Benito Owusu-Bio, the Chairperson of the National Green Ghana Planning Committee paid special tributes to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for the consistency displayed since the institution of Green Ghana Day.

He noted that Otumfuo’s commitment is indicative of the shrewdness and importance of the Green Ghana project and urged Ghanaians to participate in the event.

“Your Royal Majesty, this year, the President of the Republic has set the national target to 10 million trees. The reason is to give us the avenue to nurture and take care of the trees planted over the last three years.  So, we expect to plant at least 10 million trees on this day and Asanteman has always risen to the challenge and this year will not be an exception,” he stated.

“As we plant the trees today, let us make conscious efforts to continue nurturing these plants to help them grow to maturity to ensure a higher survival rate.  Your Royal Majesty, on behalf of the President, I wish to thank you and Asanteman for your support in the fight against galamsey and your desire to uplift the image of the Asante Kingdom,” he added.

Mr Osei-Mensah, the Ashanti Regional Minister underscored the relevance of the tree planting exercise to the country, explaining the contribution of trees to the survival of mankind.

The Regional Minister outlined the diverse benefits of trees which include medicinal purposes, protection of the ecosystem, and beautification of the environment, amongst others.

The planning committee for the royal visit, led by Nii Boi Abbey, said in a news conference at the Ga Mantse Palace on Thursday, June 6, that the first-ever visit by the Ashanti overlord marks a major milestone in the history of the two kingdoms.

“The visit will be crowned with a special durbar hosted by King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, the Ga Mantse.

“It is a historic visit and rekindles the strong ties of friendship between the Gas and Ashantis. It also follows the Ga Mantse’s active participation in the Asantehene’s recent celebration of his 25th anniversary on the throne,” he said.

He added, “The Ga and Ashanti people have had extensive interactions, which have led to the exchange of cultural practices, traditions, and ideas.”

Nii Boi Abbey said, “Interestingly, the interactions between Gas and Ashantis over the centuries have culminated in common themes in the areas of governance, inclusiveness, and specific cultural practices including family structure, traditional dances, the structure of the calendar year, taboos, defence mechanisms, and historical interactions with other tribes.

“These similarities highlight the strong ties between the Asantes and Gas, which are rooted in their shared African heritage.

“The durbar of the two gallant royals will also be used to promote peace ahead of the Presidential and Parliamentary elections in December this year.”

The planning committee leader stated, “The Office of the Ga Mantse, therefore, invites all to witness this great moment in Ghanaian traditional history at the forecourt of the Ga Mantse’s Palace in Kaneshie, Accra, at 11 am on Sunday, June 9.”

Asantehene urges mining companies to retain profits to accelerate economic dev’t http://34.58.148.58/asantehene-urges-mining-companies-to-retain-profits-to-accelerate-economic-devt/ Thu, 06 Jun 2024 07:32:33 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2405279 The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has urged mining companies to retain more of their profits in the country to help accelerate the development of the economy.

That, he said, would help Ghana to reap the benefits of mining as seen in other countries, including South Africa.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II said this in an address read on his behalf by the Essumagyamanhene and the Head of the Benkum Wing of the Ashanteman Council, Odeneho Okyere Kusi Ntrama, during the opening of the 2024 and 17th West African Mining and Power Conference and Exhibition.

The three-day conference is on the theme: “The Mining and Power Hub: Driving Sustainable Investment Opportunities in West Africa.”

It is expected to be attended by 300 participants and 150 local exhibitors from 20 countries across the world.

The Asantehene, who was the special guest of honour, called for increased local ownership and participation in the exploitation of the country’s mineral resources to retain more value locally.

He urged the mining and power companies in the country to list on the Ghana Stock Exchange to promote local ownership.

The Asantehene entreated the mining companies to mine sustainably and respect the environment, adding that mining companies should respect the local communities and their cultural values.

He said the investments of mining companies should not only focus on yielding economic returns but the long-term prosperity of the country.

The Asantehene urged mining companies to adopt Artificial Intelligence and Technology in line with the shift from fossil to renewable energy.

On his part, the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel A. Jinapor, said the government recognised the pivotal role of mining and power sectors in economic growth such as creating employment opportunities and contributing to national development through revenue generation.

He said because of the importance of exploration to the mining industry, the government was promoting investment in exploration to uncover new mineral reserves and sustain the long-term viability of the mining industry.

Mr Jinapor said government was working with the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and the Ghana Chamber of Mines, under the guidance of Government’s Economic Management Team, to explore the best framework for treating critical imposts such as Value-Added Tax (VAT) on exploration to reduce the financial burden on exploration companies.

“We are, also, in the process of enacting a Legislative Instrument, pursuant to section 28 of the Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation Act, 2018 (Act 976), to restrict the export of bauxite in its raw state. This will enable us to leverage on our over nine hundred million metric tonnes (900,000,000MMt) of bauxite resources to build an integrated aluminium industry in-country,” he stated.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, Dr Sulemanu Koney said the conference had come at an opportune time in the history of the country.

He said the conference was to provide a platform to introduce new suppliers, new technologies and new techniques to West Africa’s mining and power industries.

The donation is intended to bolster women’s involvement in traditional governance, particularly among the youth.

In addressing the queen mothers in the Ashanti Region on Monday, Osei-Opare emphasised the importance of advocating for increased female representation across various sectors.

“Let us continue to advocate for a deliberate effort, for more women in all facets of our national discourse; management levels in the public sector, religious organisations, schools, private sector organisations among others,” she said.

Osei-Opare used the occasion to appeal to Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to lend his support for the passage of the Affirmative Action Bill.

Speaking at the Asanteman Queen Mothers’ Day and Food Fair in the Ashanti Region, Osei-Opare commended Otumfuo’s efforts in fostering greater female participation in governance within the Ashanti kingdom.

“During your reign as Asantehene, we have seen visible signs of more queen mothers being actively involved in the management of the Ashanti kingdom,” she noted. “Queen mothers are now allowed to attend Asanteman Council meetings, which is a deliberate effort to empower women.”

Acknowledging Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s influential leadership style, Osei-Opare appealed to him to advocate for the passage of the Affirmative Action Bill, currently under review in parliament.

“Nana, your leadership style not only inspires confidence but also sets a powerful example for the next generation of male leaders to follow,” Frema Opare said. “I therefore appeal to you, Otumfuo, to add your voice for the passage of the Affirmative Action Bill.”

Highlighting the significant representation of the Ashanti region in Parliament, Osei-Opare emphasised the potential impact of the monarch’s endorsement.

“Nana, Ashanti region has the highest number of MPs in Parliament, as compared to other regions, so your counsel can go a long way to ensure the passage of this Bill,” she added.

She also lauded Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for his remarkable 25 years on the Golden stool, touching on his pivotal role in restoring peace not only within Asanteman but across the nation.

She commended the monarch’s investment in health, particularly the ‘heal Komfo Anokye Project’ and the renowned Otumfuo Educational Fund, which aids bright but underprivileged students.

Otumfuo Jubilee Hall: Multipurpose “Asante-like” building commissioned to boost economic gains http://34.58.148.58/otumfuo-jubilee-hall-multipurpose-asante-like-building-commissioned-to-boost-economic-gains/ Mon, 15 Apr 2024 20:38:06 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2381452 Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has commissioned a 7,000 capacity multipurpose hall to host traditional and other functions in the Ashanti region.

Known as the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Jubilee Hall, the edifice is built to depict a quintessential Asante house setting and encapsulated in a modern architecture.

The facility is expected to boost economic gains and also propagate the cultural heritage of the Asante kingdom.

Mural embossed with traditional artifacts and the Golden stool

Conspicuous at the entrance of the edifice is a mural designed in a cloth-like form and embossed with Asante artifacts and Adinkra symbols.

At the heart of the culturally crafted graffiti is a three-dimensional figure of the esteemed Golden Stool, “Sika Dwa Kofi”.

Golden Stool

Built to depict the typical housing architecture of the Asantes known locally as “Fi hankra”, the edifice, arguably one of the largest facilities in the region, houses a 2,000-capacity acoustic auditorium and is surrounded by offices and other ancillary facilities including an eatery.

The multi-purpose structure is designed to host traditional events and other functions with a special chamber and office for the Asantehene.

The structure was single-handedly financed by the Asantehene.

Cultural historian, Teacher Safo Kantanka explains the cultural significance of the new edifice.

“The typical asante house has walls North, South, East and West with open verandas and a big open space where people bring in stools to sit and deliberate on issues. When it rains the Chiefs are forbidden to move an inch from the rain. If we are borrowing culture, then we have to get an auditorium that is roofed,” he explained.

Fountain area

A resting area erected around the bulb-like fountain is definitely a spectacle one would not miss at the edifice.

It is beautified with a magnificent mural portraying the typical royal sitting of the king during durbars as he is flanked by his sub-chiefs.

Chairperson of Otumfuo’s 25th Anniversary Committee, Juabenhene Otuo Siriboe II says the edifice which would be one of the many legacies of the Asantehene is aligned with the traditions of celebrating the remarkable achievements of royals.
“It is usually during the Odwira festivities that the traditional leaders unveil projects they have undertaken to foster developments in their localities,” he said.

The jubilee hall is part of projects to commemorate the silver jubilee of the Asantehene slated to climax in May this year.

Some Queen mothers could not hide their excitement about the structure as they believe it would propagate the cultural heritage of the kingdom.

“We’ve always been selling the Asante culture out there, but this definitely adds to uplifting the face of the kingdom. We’re grateful to the King,” Queen mother of Manso expressed heartily.

Asante artefacts returning home after 150 years http://34.58.148.58/asante-artefacts-returning-home-after-150-years/ Wed, 20 Dec 2023 09:15:15 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2334701 African artefacts looted during the colonial era, are gradually finding their way back to their countries of origin as discussions on restitution hit a crescendo.

Reports by Graphic Online show that in Ghana, the Asantehene had been pushing for the return of Asante gold regalia from museums in Britain and expectations are that something positive will come out in 2024 to coincide with the silver jubilee coronation of the 16th Asante monarch.

The Manhyia Palace Museum, which has undergone a massive transformation, is being prepared to receive the items, which will eventually boost tourism.

The return of the Asante artefacts will also coincide with two other important activities in Asanteman in 2024. One of the activities is the celebration of 150 years of the third Anglo-Asante War of 1874.

It was a war in which a British expeditionary force, retaliating against a crushing defeat by Asante two years earlier, marched into Kumasi, destroyed the palace of the Asantehene, Kofi Karikari and took away his insignia of authority and other valuables, most of which later found their way into museums in Britain.

In his push for restitution, Otumfuo, during his visit to London in May 2023 participated in the coronation of King Charles and took time to meet with the Director of the British Museum, Dr Hartwig Fischer who assured him that his outfit would consider granting his wishes through the established British laws.

A team constituted by the Asantehene made up of historian, museum economist and development specialist, Ivor Agyeman-Duah, and a former Keeper of Ethnography at the British Museum and Professor of History and Vice Principal of the University of Glasgow, Malcolm McLeod, has continued the discussions with the management of the British Museum and indications are that progress is being made.

Otumfuo is said to have also asked the former Black Stars coach to remain the technical director and Chairman of Asante Kotoko’s Interim Management Committee (IMC).

This comes after speculation that, Otumfuo will turn down Kwesi Appiah’s request to leave his role at the club for the Sudan job.

Meanwhile, reports suggest that, Appiah’s assistant coach, fitness coach, goalkeepers’ coach and physiotherapist will all be Ghanaians if he signs the deal to coach Sudan.

Appiah carved a niche for himself in Sudan, with his managerial exploits at Khartoum Club, having led them to the CAF Confederation Cup.

The Sudanese FA has decided that due to the political unrest in the country recently, the national teams will play their home matches in Egypt.

Emulate Otumfuo, dismiss officials involved in ‘galamsey’ – Akufo-Addo told http://34.58.148.58/emulate-otumfuo-dismiss-officials-involved-in-galamsey-akufo-addo-told/ Thu, 24 Aug 2023 13:26:11 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2286456

The Media Coalition Against Galamsey is admonishing President Nana Akufo-Addo to emulate the actions of the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II by dismissing government officials who are found guilty of engaging in illegal mining activities.

This comes on the back of Otumfuo’s decision to destool the Chief of Abuontem, Nana Kwaku Duah III following allegations of his involvement in the illegal sale of lands that rightfully belong to various individuals and families.

The destoolment of Nana Kwaku Duah III and his subsequent handover to the police took place on Monday during a session of the Kumasi Traditional Council held at the Manhyia Palace.

Speaking on the matter, the convener of the Coalition, Ing Dr Kenneth Ashigbey, says Otumfuo has shown leadership which he is charging the president to adapt in his governance.

“This is what we expect of leadership, and I completely agree with Otumfuo that if you are a chief, and you have galamsey happening in your community, you are either complicit and deeply involved in it or you are incompetent, and in both cases, you are not worthy of being the chief or leader of the people. And I think this is the Asantehene walking the talk, and so it is the same action that we require of the president.”

This comes a little over a week after the chief of Aduamoa was also destooled due to his involvement in unauthorized multiple land sales and various acts of misconduct.

How and why Otumfuo destooled some five chiefs http://34.58.148.58/how-and-why-otumfuo-destooled-some-five-chiefs/ Wed, 23 Aug 2023 12:25:38 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2286304 A monarchical historian at the Manhyia Palace, Osei-Bonsu Sarfo-Kantanka, has stated all the five sub-chiefs who were destooled by Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II were tried by a jury.

According to him, Otumfuo gave his verdict upon the decision of the jury.

He explained that chieftaincy institution has rules and regulations that all players in the sector should abide by.

In the Asante Kingdom, he said, the Asantehen is the highest order when it comes to the hierarchy and has the power to destool any sub-chief who has engaged in wrongdoing.

So far, the Asantehene has destooled five chiefs in 2023 for different various reasons including abandonment of stool, illegal small-scale mining (galamsey) as well as land issues.

Safo Kantanaka explained that “Chieftaincy institution has got its own way of life, the institution has got its rules and regulations in line with culture and tradition, just like any other institution has rules and regulations and so if you go against the rules and regulations in one with culture then, of course, you have to be penalized for doing the wrong thing.

“It is a hierarchy and the highest order within the Ashanti community is the Asantehene at the topmost level of the chiefs within the Asante man community.”

“All five there were destooled within the state of about five months were all tried, which means all the Kumasi Abrempon, second-in-command to Omanhene sat on their case just like a case is being tried in court by a jury, it was a jury-kind of trial but when they all come to a consensus and what the chief did was bad then the Asantehene will give the trial verdict,” he said on Accra-based TV3.

According to reports, the destoolment is a result of the Bekwai-Abodom chief failing to prove his innocence after 20 cases of his alleged involvement in ‘galamsey’ [illegal mining].

The residents accused the chief of willingly and indiscriminately selling pieces of land to artisanal miners.

In addition, Nana Saforo Koto was accused of neglecting his town for seven years, resulting in the abandonment of performing his traditional and ritual rites within the stool house, as well as other customary obligations.

The sub-chiefs under the jurisdiction of the Bekwai-Abodomhene have expressed discontent with his disregard for essential traditional customs tied to his position.

During the proceedings at the Asanteman Traditional Council, Otumfuo Kyeame Kwaku Owusu revealed that the destooled Chief failed to respond to all the charges levelled against him when he was given the chance to address the allegations.

Consequently, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II pronounced the embattled chief guilty of all the charges and destooled him after hearing from the various divisional Chiefs.

Before the celebrations of the Asantehene’s 25th Anniversary, several chiefs involved in illegal mining activities will be destooled if found guilty as part of attempts to put a stop to the pollution of river bodies through illegal mining.

The Porcupine Warriors, despite their impressive outings in the domestic league, have struggled to make an impact in African competitions despite impressive records on the continent decades ago.

Kotoko last won the Premier League during the 2021/22 season under Prosper Narteh Ogum.

Following their participation in the CAF Champions League, Kotoko failed to impress and exited in the playoffs round.

Having been dropped from the Confederations Cup, Kotoko again failed to make it to the group phase of the tournament.

Otumfuo on Monday evening met the playing body and the technical and the Interim Management Committee (IMC) ahead of the 2023/24 Ghana Premier League season.

Addressing the playing body and the technical team, Otumfuo vowed to do anything possible to make the club great again.

He also underscored an unwavering commitment to propel the Kumasi-based club back to prominence.

“Whatever I will do to make the team great again, I will do. What I am expecting from you all is a unity to make Kotoko great again,” Otumfuo said.

Meanwhile, Asante Kotoko will officially open pre-season today at Beposo in the Ashanti Region ahead of the new season that get underway in September later this year.

Asante Kotoko will open their campaign with a home game against Heart of Lions at the Baba Yara Stadium.

Following the dissolution of the 12-member board of directors and the Nana Yaw Amponsah-led management, a four-member IMC has been assembled by Otumfuo to ensure the day-to-day running of the club.

The IMC members are Nana Apinkra Akwasi Awua; the Kontomponiaferehene and a chartered accountant, former Black Stars coach, Kwesi Appiah, Prosper Narteh Ogum as head coach and Emmanuel Newton Dasoberi as the administrative manager.

On Saturday, Otumfuo took a tour of the club’s Adako Jachie Sports Complex which is yet to be completed.

“The current debt is from hotel expenses, players’ salaries and wages – which have been accrued also from the last two months adding June and July. So we have this debt to clear before also finding a way around player recruitment,” Otumfuo said.

“As for you [Kotoko], you are the only ones disgracing me.”

He’s also ordered the club to clear its debt of over GHc3m before signing players ahead of the new betPawa league season which kicks off in six weeks.

Dissolution

This follows the dissolution of the club’s Board of Directors and management by Otumfuo last Tuesday.

As has been the norm, the Asantehene reportedly received the reports of the board and management of Kotoko at the Manhyia Palace after which he broke the news of their end of tenure to them.

Otumfuo thanked the Dr Kwame Kyei board and Nana Yaw Amponsah and his team for their respective contributions to the club in the past three seasons.

A close source told the Daily Graphic that Otumfuo, who is the owner of Kotoko, would meet the playing body, technical team and the Circles (supporters wing) tomorrow.

As the club races against time to prepare for the new season, expectations are that Otumfuo might drop a hint on the new direction for the club.

Until their three-year tenure ended last Tuesday, the Kotoko board and management had a frosty relationship, which largely affected the club’s performance in the league.

Demonstrate high level of transparency in these difficult times – Otumfuo to govt http://34.58.148.58/demonstrate-high-level-of-transparency-in-these-difficult-times-otumfuo-to-govt/ Sat, 18 Mar 2023 08:51:48 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2229450 Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has urged the government to be transparent with the citizenry on the economic situation of the country.

He believes this will foster trust in the government.

Speaking at the 56th congregation of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), he observed that there was inadequate consultation in the lead up to the introduction of the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP).

The introduction of the DDEP led to intensive public outcry.

“Our debt level as a country has become unsustainable pushing the government to roll out a domestic debt exchange programme that aims to restructure the nation’s domestic and ensure some fiscal space for the country to operate. Sadly, it appears adequate public consultation did not take place until the programme commenced.

“In order to produce an outcome that will be in the best interest of everybody to promote peace and development, I want to implore the government to demonstrate a high level of transparency and be candid in these difficult times in order to gain the trust and confidence of the general public.

“Government should be more accommodating and reach out to those who may be even opposed to them politically. The interest of the country is paramount and we must all work together to prevent the collapse of the economy,” he said.

Otumfuo added: “As we move to negotiate with our external creditors, I urge the government to bring together the best players with the requisite expertise from all political perspectives, so whatever the decision the government chooses will be everyone’s responsibility.”

Manhyia Palace to host ‘Ghana Responsible Gold Mining’ summit http://34.58.148.58/manhyia-palace-to-host-ghana-responsible-gold-mining-summit/ Tue, 20 Dec 2022 14:06:04 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2198147 The Asantehene, His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, is taking steps to ensure that gold sourced from Ghana is responsibly mined and traded.

Within that spirit, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II is committed to launching the Ghana Responsible Gold Mining Summit, which will work to ensure that gold sourced from Ghana’s small-scale mining sector is responsibly mined and traded in accordance with international standards.

His Majesty has demonstrated immense commitment to the eradication of illegal mining and promoting responsible mining, and at the Summit, he will work with stakeholders to ensure that interventions to halt environmental degradation are coordinated and fully supported.

The Summit is scheduled to take place on the 7th and 8th of April, 2023 at the Manhyia Palace, Kumasi in the Ashanti Region, to precede the 24th Coronation Anniversary of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

The Summit will be led by Africa Responsible Mining in collaboration with E ON 3 Group and Ansong Askew Ltd.

The event is supported by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and its agencies, as well as the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

Other stakeholders, including international market makers, will also provide some collaboration.

Outputs

Outputs from the Ghana Responsible Gold Mining Summit will focus on aligning Ghana’s small-scale mining sector with the expectations of international markets.

This will include measures to increase transparency and accountability in the sector in line with international standards of responsible sourcing.

Otumfuo’s commitment

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II will work with the government of Ghana, traditional leaders, political leaders, and international stakeholders to ensure that gold sourced from the country is responsibly mined and traded.

His Majesty is committed to building confidence in the international community about transparency and accountability in Ghana’s small-scale mining sector.

The Asantehene’s quest for environmental protection and his abhorrence of illegal mining has been phenomenal.

At various fora, he had minced no words about the need for Ghana to turn to responsible mining.

At a Regional Consultative Dialogue on Small Scale Mining, in Kumasi in May 2021, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II threatened to sanction chiefs within his jurisdiction who engage or assist in illegal mining activities.

Also addressing the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs in Kumasi on October 14, 2022, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, called out his sub-chiefs for not taking up the fight against illegal mining but rather, accepting monies from illegal miners thereby, making it difficult for their part to make any meaningful contribution to the fight against illegal mining.

Again, in October 2022, when the US Ambassador to Ghana, Virginia Palmer, called on His Majesty at the Manhyia Palace, he touched on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s promise of putting his presidency on the line during the height of the war against the illegal mining menace and wondered why the President had even put his presidency on the line, and yet illegal mining was going on.

And at the last meeting of the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs for the year 2022, held in Kumasi on December 14, His Majesty re-emphasised his quest to root out illegal mining from his domain and went head to state that, his office will from next year (2023), summon chiefs whose lands have been destroyed by illegal mining, for questioning.

He warned that any chief who is unable to provide valid reasons would be sanctioned so that they will learn a lesson and protect their lands from illegal mining.
