The macaques have injured almost 50 people in Yamaguchi.

The male primate was found in the grounds of a high school on Tuesday evening by specially commissioned hunters.

It was tranquilised and later put down when it was identified as one of the animals responsible for the attacks.

Authorities have been hunting the monkeys since the attacks began on adults and children about three weeks ago. Most injuries have been mild scratches and bites.

Incidents are still being reported and the search continues for other members of the gang, an official at the local agricultural department told AFP.

“Eyewitnesses describe monkeys of different sizes, and even after the capture, we’ve been getting reports of new attacks,” he said.

The captured monkey was estimated to be four years old and was about half a metre tall (1ft 7in).

Japanese macaques are common in large parts of the country and in some areas are considered a pest, eating crops and sometimes entering homes.

However, the attacks in Yamaguchi are unusual.

A city official said before the capture that it was “rare to see this many attacks in a short period of time”.

“Initially, only children and women were attacked,” they said, adding: “Recently, elderly people and adult men have been targeted too.”

Earlier efforts to capture the animals with traps failed and police patrols set up in early July have been unsuccessful until now.

Reports include a four-year-old girl scratched after a monkey broke into her apartment and one animal entering a kindergarten classroom.

Once a vulnerable species, Japanese macaques have recently seen a population boom.

This has led to “serious conflicts” with people, according to research from Yamagata University. Changes in human behaviour and forest environments may be one cause.

Baby dies after being snatched by monkey http://34.58.148.58/baby-dies-after-being-snatched-by-monkey/ Tue, 21 Jun 2022 07:47:05 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2128719 A one-month-old baby boy has died in Tanzania after being snatched from his mother by a monkey which had gone into their house, authorities say.

The child was being breastfed by his mother when a troop of monkeys invaded their home in Mwamgongo village in Kigoma, near the Gombe Nation Park in western Tanzania.

It is not clear what species of monkey attacked the mother.

Kigoma Regional Commander James Manyama said the child had died after villagers tried to use force against the monkey to rescue the child.

Mr Manyama said the baby was injured on the head and neck, and later passed away as he was receiving treatment.

The police have urged citizens to continue to be vigilant.

Monkey delivered of a baby through C-section at Kumasi Zoo [Photos] http://34.58.148.58/monkey-delivered-of-a-baby-through-c-section-at-kumasi-zoo-photos/ Wed, 03 Feb 2021 20:31:58 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1914688 A mona monkey at the Kumasi Zoological Gardens has given birth to a baby male primate through a C-section.

The surgery was conducted by Dr Meyir Y. Ziekah, a veterinary doctor and manager of the Kumasi Zoo.

No photo description available.

This was after the monkey had difficulty with natural delivery due to a very narrow birth canal.

According to Dr Ziekah, the one hour and 20 minutes surgery was “complex,” due to the lack of the necessary equipment and tools.

“She has been in labour for three days and we have been monitoring it. On the first day, we realised that the birth canal was quite small and the infant had a big head that couldn’t pass through the birth canal and the animal was getting weak so we took the decision,” Dr Ziekah narrated.

Though the first-time mother and baby monkey were reported to be doing well at the Kumasi Zoo nursery, he said things took a different turn.

“When she recovered from the anesthesia, she was a bit aggressive towards the infant and separated from her. Later on, she accepted the infant but in the night she became aggressive again and later rejected her completely and unfortunately, we lost her,” he said.

Monkeys snatch blood samples of suspected Covid-19 patients in India http://34.58.148.58/monkeys-snatch-blood-samples-of-suspected-covid-19-patients-in-india/ Fri, 29 May 2020 18:11:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1802612 A troop of monkeys snatched the blood samples of suspected coronavirus patients at a government hospital in the Meerut district of the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.

The incident happened on Thursday when a lab assistant working with the Covid-19 facility of the hospital was carrying blood samples due for testing, Dr Dheeraj Baliyan, medical superintendent of Lala Lajpat Rai Memorial Medical College and Hospital, told CNN.

The monkeys attacked the lab assistant and stole the sample box with three samples, added Baliyan.

The head of the hospital, S.K. Garg, told a local newswire that the samples were blood samples, and not the swabs usually taken to test for Covid-19.

Garg said that the samples belonged to people who had tested positive for Covid-19, but were taken as part of routine blood tests for the patients.

The monkeys climbed the trees with the samples and threw them after chewing the packets, Baliyan added.

The medical superintendent confirmed to CNN that no individual came into contact with the samples, and the hospital authorities have sanitized the area and disposed of the samples snatched by the monkeys.

The district administration has ordered an inquiry against the hospital authorities for alleged mishandling of the samples.

According to India’s health ministry, the total number of coronavirus cases in the country as of Friday stands at 165,799, including 4,706 deaths.

Video: The untold story of Boabeng-Fiema Monkey Sanctuary http://34.58.148.58/video-the-untold-story-of-boabeng-fiema-monkey-sanctuary/ Wed, 14 Aug 2019 16:18:50 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1693257

Boabeng-Fiema Monkey Sanctuary is a unique sanctuary with over 700 monkeys and the only habitat for two different species of monkeys; Mona and Columbus. The two different species of monkeys are regarded as sacred and live in peace and in harmony with human beings.

According to history, the monkeys are able to determine when a prominent person will die. It is believed that when a group of black and white Columbus Monkeys make an unusual noise between 11: 00pm and 12 midnight, it is to announce the death of a fellow from the twin-village.

Endangered monkey species discovered in Atiwa Forest http://34.58.148.58/endangered-monkey-species-discovered-atiwa-forest/ Tue, 19 Dec 2017 16:58:52 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=776391 Ghana has attracted global attention as a Rocha Scientists have discovered Cercocebus lunulatus, a rare terrestrial Monkey in the Atiwa Forest Reserve in the Eastern Region.
The Scientists discovered the globally threatened White-naped Mangabey (Cercocebus lunulatus) in the Atiwa Forest a few days ago using infrared camera trap.
The primate was known to live in only a handful of sites in western Ghana, eastern Cote d’Ivoire and southern Burkina Faso but now endangered.
The mangabey – a rare terrestrial monkey – is classified as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Redlist of Threatened Species.
Primates are a human closest creature with almost similar biological traits. Primates play a very crucial role in pharmacology, biomass formation, research among others hence cherished, but human activities including poaching and deforestation are wiping off the primate population worldwide.
Dr Jeremy Lindsell of A Rocha International, the lead Scientist for the new discovery lamented that “unfortunately, this newly discovered population of this endangered monkey in Atiwa is threatened by a bauxite mine being planned for this biologically important forest, as well as by snare traps and hunting for the bush-meat trade”.
Andrea Dempsey, the Executive Director for West African Primate Conservation Action (WAPCA), which supports a captive breeding programme for White-naped Mangabeys in Accra and Kumasi zoos also said, “White-naped Mangabeys are so rare that I think these may be the first photographs of them in the wild in Ghana.
“Finding them in the Atiwa Forest gives hope to our efforts to save them. Protecting critical habitat such as Atiwa Forest will be key for their long-term survival.”
The Atiwa Forest harbours a high diversity of threatened and endemic species including birds, mammals, reptiles, butterflies and amphibians.
In recent months, the high economic value of the ecosystem services that Atiwa Forest provides to many Ghanaians was highlighted in a 2016 report to the government titled ‘The Economics of the Atiwa Forest Range.’
Chief amongst these services is the clean water supply flowing from the Atiwa hills on which over five million Ghanaians depend.
This makes it all the more concerning that the Government of Ghana with the Government of China wants to push ahead with plans to extract bauxite – the ore of aluminium – from the Atiwa Hills at Kyebi.
The hilltops of Atiwa will be completely removed during mining because the bauxite deposits are only found in the top few metres.
This will destroy all vegetation and associated fauna because bauxite cannot be extracted using a low impact method.
Re-establishment of the original flora and fauna on areas that have once been mined is virtually impossible especially with highly complex and biologically rich forests like Atiwa.
“Extracting bauxite from Atiwa Forest is incompatible with biodiversity conservation and the ecosystem services that the forest provides.
“It will spell the end of the unique and irreplaceable species that the forest contains,” Jan Kamstra of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) said.
A Rocha, IUCN Netherlands and many other stakeholders including international businesses have advocated for Atiwa Forest reserve to be upgraded to a National Park.
The creation of a new National Park at Atiwa has substantial local support, including from the Okyenhene of the Akyem Abuakwa, who is the traditional ruler where the forest is located.
In a letter to the President of Ghana dated December 15, 2017, Dr Russ Mittermeier, Chair of the IUCN Primate Specialist Group, said “it is a matter of some urgency that the forest is properly protected both from hunting and from habitat change…
“I urge that Ghana’s commitments to the Convention on Biological Diversity and to the Sustainable Development Goals take precedence in this case and that Atiwa Forest is removed from mining plans once and for all and made into a National Park.”

I called Afriyie Acquah “Monkey”, he called me “Rat” – Amanda http://34.58.148.58/called-afriyie-acquah-monkey-called-rat-amanda/ Mon, 24 Apr 2017 10:33:44 +0000 http://ghana-news.adomonline.com/new/?p=90381 In the heat of a media storm over a leaked audio on her marital life with Black Stars midfielder, Afriyie Acquah, Amanda described her then husband as a “Monkey”.

The derogatory term subjected the Black Stars player to public ridicule and social media trolling.

The woman at the centre of that controversy, more than a year after the public brouhaha, says the name “Monkey” was just a pet name for the player.

Amanda in late 2015 took the media by storm after she revealed in a leaked tape that she had bedded her husband’s teammate, Jordan Ayew, for four years prior to their marriage.

While passing disparaging comments about her husband – calling him ‘monkey’ – Amanda also said there was tension between the two players. She did not stop there, she eulogised Jordan’s sexual prowess and impressive girth.

The estranged wife of the Ghanaian footballer, speaking in an interview on GhOne revealed that the name ‘Monkey’ was not meant to be a pejorative term.

According to her, they both agreed on the name as Afriyie also called her “Kusie” (Rat).

Amanda revealed further that “I even used to call Ken [Kenpong] ‘Dzata’ (Lion) because he is very wild.”

Although they are no longer together, she warned other women to stay off her “Monkey”.

“We met on Skype, I just saw him standing there looking so tall, I was just looking at his six packs and his thighs and I was like Oh this guy! You are not going anywhere, you are mine… all the girls should know he is still mine forever,” she cautioned.

Girl found living with monkeys in Indian jungle http://34.58.148.58/girl-found-living-monkeys-indian-jungle/ Fri, 07 Apr 2017 13:45:16 +0000 http://ghana-news.adomonline.com/new/?p=67781 A child found living with monkeys in a forest in India has been dubbed “Mowgli girl” after the character in the Jungle Book.

The youngster could not speak, behaved like an animal and ran on all fours. She ate food from the floor without using her hands, said doctors treating her.

The girl, believed to be aged between 10 and 12, was naked and looked very comfortable roaming with the primates when she was discovered by tree surgeons in the Katarniya Ghat forest range.

When they tried to rescue her, they were chased away by the monkeys before a policeman was later able to take her away despite being attacked himself by the animals.

He drove his patrol car at speed while the monkeys ran after the vehicle.

'Mowgli girl'

Police officer Dinesh Tripathi said: “When he called the girl, the monkeys attacked him but he was able to rescue the girl. He sped away with her in his police car while the monkeys gave chase.”

Dr D K Singh from Bahraich district hospital, said: “She was rescued and brought here. When she arrived here, her hair was dishevelled and she was not wearing any clothes.

“She was very thin and weak, and it seemed like she had not eaten for many days.

“Her behaviour was totally like an animal. The way she moved, even her eating habits were like that of an animal.

“She would throw food on the ground and eat it directly with her mouth, without lifting it with her hands. She used to move around using only her elbows and her knees.”

Doctors in Uttar Pradesh state have been treating her since she was discovered in January.

She has now started walking normally and eating with her hands.

She is still unable to talk, but understands whatever people tell her and also smiles, said a hospital spokesman.

Her story has similarities with Rudyard Kipling’s tale about a boy called Mowgli who was brought up by wolves.

Police are reviewing reports of missing children to try to identify the girl.

Officers are also attempting to find out how she got into the forest and who her parents are.

She will be sent to a home for juveniles until she is identified.
