In a statement signed by JUSAG National President Samuel Afotey Otu, the association revealed that an angry group stormed the courtroom during proceedings involving three accused persons charged with unlawful damage, theft, and assault.

Armed with harmful objects, the mob forcibly entered the courtroom, disrupted proceedings, scattered staff and litigants, and freed the accused. Court staff and the magistrate fled and locked themselves in their offices as attackers vandalized furniture and attempted to break into the magistrate’s chambers. The situation was brought under control only after reinforcements from the Atebubu Police Unit arrived.

JUSAG described the incident as part of a worrying trend of violent attacks on judicial institutions, noting that the magistrate and staff remain traumatized and fear for their lives. The association appealed to Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie to close the court until adequate security measures are in place and instructed staff to stay away from work until their safety is assured.

The association further called on the Inspector General of Police to arrest the perpetrators and ensure they face the full rigours of the law, while extending support and well-wishes to affected staff, court users, and security personnel.

According to the report, this is the third time they have been nearly attacked for responding late to a fire outbreak within the municipality.

Speaking to Adom News, the Konongo Divisional Fire Service Commander, DOII Joe Bryden, stated that they received a distress call from Odumasi Suntreso.

However, they could not respond swiftly because their fire tender had broken down and had not been functional for about two months.

As a result, they had to call the Ejisu Fire Station for assistance.

Upon arrival, the angry mob began yelling and pelting stones at them, causing damage to the windscreen, headlights, and other parts of the fire tender.

The Konongo Odumasi Fire Station, located in the Asante Akyem Central Municipality, serves four other nearby districts in the Ashanti Region.

Family demands justice for man by mob killed after theft allegation http://34.58.148.58/family-demands-justice-for-man-by-mob-killed-after-theft-allegation/ Thu, 15 Aug 2024 09:15:42 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2434171 The family of Bismark Awatey Kabutey, a 37-year-old man brutally killed by a mob at Teshie in the Greater Accra Region is calling for justice.

The callous incident occurred on July 28, 2024, after a wedding and birthday party.

Bismark, who hailed from Aboa-Lower, a farming community in the Yilo Krobo Municipality of the Eastern Region, and his friend identified as Junior had attended the wedding in Madina and later joined a birthday party in Teshie.

According to reports, the incident occurred late in the night as Kabutey and his friend, Junior were returning home.

Junior, who witnessed the tragic event, recounted the horrifying details.

“Bismark was drunk so a friend hired a taxi to take us home. On our way, there was some kind of misunderstanding between Bismark and the driver. Suddenly, the driver stopped the car and started shouting, ‘Thief! Thief! Thief!’.  Within moments, a crowd gathered, armed with stones, clubs, and other weapons. They didn’t ask us any questions; they just started attacking Bismark.”

Despite Junior’s desperate attempts to explain that they were not thieves but guests at a wedding, the mob ignored his pleas.

“I went on my knees, begging them, but they wouldn’t listen. Some of them even started hitting me. I had no choice but to run for my life through the back of a building,” Junior continued.

Junior was unable to locate Kabutey after escaping the scene. The next day, he received the devastating news that his friend’s lifeless body had been found in Accra and taken to the Police Hospital Mortuary.

A formal report was lodged with the Police at Teshie.

The family of Bismark is now demanding justice, urging the Police to conduct a thorough investigation and bring those responsible to account.

“We are heartbroken and in shock. Our brother went to celebrate with friends and never returned. He was not a thief. We need justice for Bismark,” a family spokesperson said.

Bismark was a goalkeeper but quit after his dream of progressing high could not materialize.

He worked on a farm in the village to take care of his family.

Police probe alleged mob attack on firefighters at Konongo http://34.58.148.58/police-probe-alleged-mob-attack-on-firefighters-at-konongo/ Wed, 14 Feb 2024 08:39:10 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2355853 Police in the Ashanti Region have launched investigations into an alleged mob assault on personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).

The incident took place on Saturday, February 10, as firefighters from the Konongo-Odumasi Fire Station responded to a distress call near Stellex Pharmacy, a well-known health facility in the Asante Akyem Central Municipality.

Upon their arrival at the site, the firefighters, who were already dealing with a fierce blaze at Pra Junction, were met with hostility from the public.

This led to damage to their borrowed fire engine, as the angry crowd hindered them from carrying out their lawful duties at the scene of the fire.

DO3 Peter Osei Adai, a spokesperson for the Ghana National Fire Service, condemned the act and stated that a formal complaint has been filed with the police for prompt action.

“When our men got to the scene, they were met with hostilities—members of the public that had gathered there obstructed [our men] from performing their lawful duties. They pelted them with stones, forcing the duty officer to order his team to return to base.”

“Now the driver’s mirror is damaged and there are lots of dents on the vehicle”, the officer narrated.

Mob burns 13 suspected gang members to death http://34.58.148.58/mob-burns-13-suspected-gang-members-to-death/ Tue, 25 Apr 2023 12:17:36 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2242709 A group of 13 suspected gang members has been beaten and burned to death by a mob in Haiti’s capital after being seized while police were searching their vehicle.

The suspects were reportedly beaten with gasoline-soaked tyres before being set alight in Port-au-Prince on Monday.

Police say they confiscated weapons from them just before the incident.

They have not explained how members of the public got hold of the suspects.

Haiti has descended into increasing lawlessness since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in July 2021.

The United Nations said in a report published on Monday that insecurity in the capital has reached levels similar to countries at war.

Armed gangs continue to compete to expand their territorial control and clashes with police and rival gangs have “become more violent and more frequent,” claiming many civilian lives, it added.

Gang violence led to the death of nearly 70 people, including 18 women and two children, between 14 and 19 April alone, according to the UN.

Many schools and health centres have been forced to close and the violence has also affected access to many goods and services.

“The people of Haiti continue to suffer one of the worst human rights crises in decades and a major humanitarian emergency,” the report reads.

Since Moïse’s assassination, the Caribbean nation has been led by Prime Minister Ariel Henry, who has failed to rein in the gangs that now control an estimated 60% of the capital.

Mr Henry and UN officials have repeatedly called for the deployment of an international force to help police in their fight against the criminal gangs.

So far, no country has offered to lead such a force. The United States has been trying to convince Canada to take on the role but Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has so far resisted.

Mr Henry has said it is key to providing security so that long-postponed elections can be held.

The victim, identified as Yaw Osei, a native of Assin Adiembra in the Assin South District of the Central Region, is said to have had an altercation with the sister of one of the suspects.

Without provocation, suspect Kofi Acquah and one other Andrews, who were passing by and noticing the argument between his sister and the victim pounced on him and held his throat for several minutes.

“He had wanted to kill him. The victim who is battling for his life was also attacked with a stick. He cannot swallow anything food, not even saliva,” an eyewitness said.

Meanwhile, some family members of the victim believe the attack was borne out of the prolonged chieftaincy dispute in the town since the attackers belong to one of the factions.

Suspected homos3xuals escape mob attack after being caught in public toilet http://34.58.148.58/suspected-homos3xuals-escape-mob-attack-after-being-caught-in-public-toilet/ Fri, 01 Oct 2021 12:28:08 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2022747 Two suspected homosexuals escaped a mob attack after they were allegedly caught having sex in a public toilet at the Mile Three Park, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Punch reports that one of them, said to be in his early 40s and identified simply as Stephen, was reported to be sleeping with a young man in the toilet when they were caught

The attendant of the public toilet, Vitalis Andrew, recalled that Stephen and his alleged partner paid him money to use two different toilet rooms.

But another customer, who was using one of the toilets, heard loud moaning and suspected something was fishy.

Andrew claimed that the customer climbed the wall separating the two toilet rooms and saw Stephen having intercourse with his partner.

“This morning, one guy paid me to use the toilet, unknown to me that the person who stood by him was his sexual partner. The man entered, followed by his partner, and some minutes afterward, we started to hear loud moaning.

“When we peeped, we saw both of them making out. But before we could raise the alarm, they had run away. So, I went to where his (Stephen’s) car was parked and I could not find him. So, I called my Oga and he instructed me to find him and hold on. We have handed the man over to the police,” the attendant said.

The Manager of the public toilet, Chamberline Dappa, said he called the police who came and rescued the suspect from the mob.

“This morning, I was coming from the house when my second called me that they caught somebody sleeping with his fellow man inside the public toilet, so I asked them to hold on until I come.

“Before I arrived at the place, the second person had run away. As I came in, I saw a crowd; all of them were eager to beat the man and I asked them not to. When I saw the situation and noticed that the crowd wanted to overpower me, I called the police.

“The police arrested him and we went to the station, where I made a statement. They asked me to present the eyewitness that saw them.

“I went to the man’s shop, but he was not there, so I reported back to the police to tell them that at 11:00 am, I will provide the witness.”

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the state Police Public Relations Officer, Nnamdi Omoni, said both suspects are now in custody.

The suspects demolished a 10-bedroom self-contained house belonging to the victim, Akisi Vivian, over ownership of land.

Two out of the four suspects managed to escape the attack while the rest narrowly escaped lynching.

Madam Vivian, narrating her ordeal to Adom News, said the suspects once confronted her and claimed ownership of the land on which she was building.

She added that she bought the land with her last savings in a bid to set up property as she had been rendered incapable following an accident which saw her amputated.

After paying no heed, she said the group of men dragged her to the police station, and the matter is still in court.

Without waiting for a verdict, the men are said to have on their own authority pulled down the building while she was away.

Residents, who witnessed the event, demanded they cease fire, but they were greeted with hostility.
