In a press release dated November 28, 2025, the Church, proprietor of WGHS, said it had become aware through media reports of a case filed by Shafic Osman against the school’s Board of Governors, the Attorney-General, and the Ghana Education Service.

The Church noted that although it has not yet been formally served, it is taking steps to obtain official records to guide its legal response.

The statement emphasized that WGHS, founded in 1836, has nearly two centuries of history in providing holistic education to girls regardless of “race, creed, religion, or background.” It highlighted that students of diverse faiths, including Christians, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and atheists, have passed through the school.

Rejecting claims that WGHS discriminates because it is a “public school,” the Church clarified that although the institution receives government support, its Methodist identity remains intact and constitutionally protected.

According to the statement, the school requires all students to respect its traditions and adhere to systems designed to maintain unity, discipline, and order. Creating separate systems and practices for students of different religions, the Church argued, would lead to segregation and weaken school cohesion.

The Methodist Church also referenced a 2024 Memorandum of Understanding developed by major religious bodies, the National Peace Council, and education stakeholders, which guides harmonious coexistence in mission schools.

The Presiding Bishop, Most Rev. Prof. Johnson K. Asamoah-Gyadu, assured the public that the Church’s longstanding commitment to fairness, sound values, and respect for all faiths remains unchanged.

The Church added that it remains open to dialogue with stakeholders to promote peace, understanding, and mutual respect amid ongoing discussions about the case.

Methodist Church supports children with cancer at Korle Bu http://34.58.148.58/methodist-church-supports-children-with-cancer-at-korle-bu/ Tue, 24 Dec 2024 08:01:45 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2487291 In a touching display of compassion, the Children’s Ministry Office of the Methodist Church Ghana, Accra Diocese, has made a heartfelt donation of essential items to the Children’s Cancer Ward at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

This annual gesture of support aims to bring hope and comfort to the young patients and their families.

In a short address, Rev. Joshua Nii Amugi Quicoe, the Children’s Service Coordinator for the Accra Diocese, urged parents to take better care of their children and embrace their responsibilities.

He shared an emotional message about the importance of nurturing and protecting children, stressing that it is heartbreaking to see children abandoned after parents pray fervently for the blessing of a child.

“It is painful to witness situations where people, after struggling for years to conceive and praying to God for a child, end up neglecting or abandoning that same child,”

Rev. Quaicoe added, “Parents must remember that caring for a child is not just a privilege, but a sacred responsibility.”

He emphasized that this act of charity, which the Children’s Ministry carries out every year, is a small way of showing love and solidarity with the sick children at Korle Bu and their families.

Rev. Quaicoe

“We must all take collective responsibility for the welfare of our children, as they are the future of our nation,” he said.

On behalf of the Children’s Cancer Ward at Korle Bu, Diana Anim Agyemang, a nurse at the Child Health Department, expressed her sincere gratitude for the donation.

She acknowledged that such gestures of kindness are not only a source of relief for the children but also a reminder of the kindness and compassion that the community has for those in need.

“We are deeply grateful for the support and care that the Methodist Church Ghana continues to show towards the children in our ward.

Thieves break into Methodist Church, bolt with musical instruments http://34.58.148.58/thieves-break-into-methodist-church-bolt-with-musical-instruments/ Wed, 17 Apr 2024 22:36:50 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2382572 Thieves have raided the Methodist Church of Ghana at Asuboni White house in the Kwahu West Municipal of the Eastern Region.

They made away with musical instruments including a keyboard organ, power amp, compressor and other items.

Resident pastor of the church, Rev Isaac Arhinful, told Adom News that the suspects made a small opening in the entrance of the burglar proof door to access the building.

He suspects the items were carried out through another opening in the concrete ceiling, which restricted them from stealing larger items.

Rev Arhinful also revealed the thieves ransacked the premise in search of cash, but found none.

He added that the robbery went unnoticed due to the darkness in the area caused by the absence of street lights.

Meanwhile, the district police command which was notified has visited the scene to access the situation.

Investigation has since commenced with no arrests made so far.

Rt. Rev. Matthew Zikpi was deemed a qualified candidate after he denounced idol worship and rose through the ranks while serving the church.

Rt. Rev. Matthew Zikpi

He was initiated into vodooism by his uncle in 1973, during his days as a pupils teacher at Asiana in the Ashanti Region.

He became the Deputy Chief Priest of the Alifia Shrine in 1978, learned the skill of palm wine tapping and distilling of local gin.

No one has ever defeated him in an alcohol-drinking competition, as he was able to consume large volumes of alcohol without getting drunk.

After several attempts by his elder brother, he denounced his deity, gave his life to Christ in 1984, relocated and joined his elder brother at Assin Atwereboanda where they fellowshipped with the Methodist Church.

He was warned against the repercussions of denouncing the gods when he returned all belongings. He was determined to follow Jesus Christ although the warnings manifested.

Rt. Rev. Zikpi was commissioned in the Ordained Ministry of the Methodist Church in 2001, after he obtained a Diploma in Ministry certificate from the Trinity Theological Seminary and a Theology Certificate with distinction from the University of Ghana, Legon.

He was ordained as a Minister in 2004, and served the church in several capacities leading to his induction as the Bishop of the newly inaugurated Ho Diocese.

I was an active member of Methodist Boys’ Brigade – Bawumia http://34.58.148.58/i-was-an-active-member-of-methodist-boys-brigade-bawumia/ Thu, 04 Aug 2022 17:40:18 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2145341 Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has fondly revealed he was an active member of the Methodist Boys’ Brigade as a young boy.

His faith, however, he indicated, changed after his mother, then known as Susana Mariama and a Methodist, converted to Islam which her husband practised.

Dr Bawumia revealed this as he touchs on the peaceful co-existence between the different religions in Ghana while speaking at the launch of the 175th-anniversary celebrations of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church Ghana (EPCG) on Sunday.

“We live in a society where a mother and some children could be Christians and a father and some children could be Muslims. As a young boy at Sakasaka primary school in Tamale, I was born to a Methodist mother (then Susana Mariama) and a Muslim father.

“Growing up I was an active member of the Methodist Boys’ Brigade until my mum changed to Islam. I suspect I am the only Muslim member of the Boys’ Brigade,” he recounted.

The Vice President further disclosed nine out of his 17 siblings are Christians with the rest being Muslims.

He emphasised this mutual existence was what has kept Ghana on top of global peace rankings over the years.

“That is the beauty of the religious acceptance in Ghana,” he touted.

Kidnapped Nigerian Methodist Church leader freed http://34.58.148.58/kidnapped-nigerian-methodist-church-leader-freed/ Tue, 31 May 2022 11:10:43 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2120354 The head of the Methodist Church in Nigeria, Samuel Kanu, has been freed after being abducted on Sunday, a church official confirmed to the BBC.

He was travelling with two other priests on a highway in the south-eastern state of Abia when they were kidnapped, police told the BBC.

It is unclear how they were freed, but separatist groups frequently carry out abductions in the region.

His release has led to jubilation in Nigeria’s Christian community.

Soon after the news of the abduction came out, members of the Methodist Church in the country started hourly chain-prayers for the release of Dr Kanu and the other priests.

“His Eminence, Samuel Kanu, is a peace-loving Christian leader” whose abduction “came as a shock”, the Very Rev Nosakhare Nosayaba of Abuja’s Methodist Cathedral of Unity told the BBC after his kidnapping.

Kidnappings, often for ransom, are common in many parts of Nigeria.

There has also been a resurgence of attacks by armed gangs, including Islamist militant groups in the north, as the country prepares for a general election next year.

Much of the unrest in Nigeria’s south-east region stems from separatists who are demanding a breakaway state.

The government blames the Indigenous People of Biafra (Ipob) movement for many attacks in the region, which Ipob denies. But the group continues to enforce sit-at-home orders on Mondays, which are usually preceded by attacks on Sunday evenings to scare people into complying.

However, it is not known who abducted the clergymen on Sunday, who were said to be gunmen. A number of recent violent attacks in the country also remain unsolved.

Last week, two Roman Catholic priests were kidnapped in the north-western state of Katsina and are still being held in captivity. Gunmen burgled the rectory of a church to abduct the clergymen and two others.

A local MP was also kidnapped by unknown gunmen recently. His headless body was later found.

In April, a male and a female soldier who hoped to get married were beheaded when they travelled to the region to inform their relatives about their planned wedding.

In a separate incident on Sunday morning, two people were abducted when gunmen entered their home in Lafia, Nasarawa state, near the capital, Abuja. One person was shot dead during the attack.

The men were travelling on a major highway on Sunday in the south-eastern state of Abia when they were kidnapped, local police told the BBC.

It is not clear who is responsible, but separatist groups frequently carry out abductions in the region.

Police say they have launched a rescue mission to find the clerics.

NDC commends Methodist Church http://34.58.148.58/ndc-commends-methodist-church/ Wed, 11 May 2022 09:04:58 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2113321 The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has commended the Methodist Church Ghana for distancing itself from the conduct of one of its own, the Rt. Rev. Stephen R. Bosomtwe Ayensu, a past Methodist Bishop of the Obuasi Diocese.

A statement signed by the General Secretary, Asiedu Nketia said the man of God’s latest attack on former President Mahama is part of a litany of vitriolic attacks launched by him against the party, leading figures and functionaries.

“One of such attacks was his unfounded claim that Former President Mahama and the NDC would cancel the Free Senior High School policy in the event the party won the 2020 General Election,” portions of the statement read.

Rev Ayensu, launched an unprovoked attack on former President John Dramani Mahama, over his recent pledge to ensure the immediate repeal of the E-levy law when the NDC assumes the reins of government.

But his comments have been condemned by many, especially members of the NDC with the church also coming under attack.

To set the records straight, the church in a statement issued on May 10, 2022, said the Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church, Most Rev. Dr Paul Kwabena Boafo, is the official Spokesperson of the Church, hence Rev. Ayensu’s comments were personal.

The NDC expressed profond gratitude to the Methodist Church for stating its position on the matter.

“We wish to state that at no point did the party or its leadership assume that the church lent its support or endorsement whatsoever to the regrettable conduct of the Rt. Rev. Bosomtwe Ayensu who often took advantage of the noble platform offered him by the church to engage in scurrilous attacks on leading figures of the NDC as though he was on a political campaign platform” the statement said.

The party has therefore reaffirmed its cordial working relationship with the Methodist Church of Ghana which has been a worthy partner in the democratic and developmental journey as a nation.

“The party hereby assures the Methodist Church that we shall continue to hold the church in high esteem as a strong pillar of development in the areas of education, and health, among others in our dear country, as we have trusted the church to remain a non-aligned stakeholder, a neutral arbiter and the moral compass of our society,” it pledged.

The statement emphasised several leaders of the NDC have been and are still devout members of the Methodist Church.

“Notably, President John Evans Atta Mills and Vice President Kwesi Amissah-Arthur, both of blessed memory were members of the Methodist Church in good standing until their passing.

“Similarly, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, the immediate-past Running Mate to the Flagbearer of the NDC in the 2020 General Election is also a member of the Methodist Church,” the statement added.

Methodist Church distances itself from Rt. Rev Ayensu’s anti- Mahama comments http://34.58.148.58/methodist-church-distances-itself-from-rt-rev-ayensus-anti-mahama-comments/ Tue, 10 May 2022 15:27:45 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2113141 The Methodist Church has dissociated itself from comments made by one of its retired Bishop, Rt. Rev Stephen Bosomtwe Ayensu attacking former President John Dramani Mahama.

According to the church, it is not associated with any political party and the comments made by Rt. Rev. Bosomtwe Ayensu that attacked Mahama’s promise to repeal the E-Levy were his opinion and not the position of the church.

Rt. Rev. Ayensu lampooned the former President for his “as backward and an attempt to sway voters”.

At the Methodist Church’s 25th Synod held at the Mount Zion Methodist Church at Obuasi in the Ashanti Region, the man of God expressed shock at the decision by Mahama to oppose a homegrown solution introduced by government.

After his comment, the Methodist church has come under attacks especially from members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

To set the records straight, the church in a statement it issued on May 10, 2022 said the Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church, Most Rev. Dr. Paul Kwabena Boafo, is the official Spokesperson of the Church.

“The Methodist Church Ghana wishes to notify the general public that the Presiding Bishop is the official Spokesperson of the Church. We, therefore appeal to our noble friends of the media not to draw the name of The Methodist Church Ghana into the alleged statements made by the past Bishop and currently the Superintendent Minister of the Amakom Circuit of the Kumasi Diocese,” portion of the statement issued by the church read.

Methodist Church approves same-sex marriage http://34.58.148.58/methodist-church-approves-same-sex-marriage/ Mon, 05 Jul 2021 15:38:23 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1982497 The Methodist Church has become the largest religious denomination in Britain to permit same-sex marriages.

A vote to change the definition of marriage at the Methodist Conference on Wednesday overwhelmingly passed by 254 in favour with 46 against.

Freedom of conscience clauses means ministers will not be forced to conduct such weddings if they oppose the move.

Same-sex marriage is not allowed in the Church of England or the Roman Catholic Church.

However, it is welcomed in the Scottish Episcopal Church, the United Reformed Church, and the Quakers in Britain.

The Methodist Church is Britain’s fourth-largest Christian denomination with about 164,000 members across more than 4,000 churches.

Church officials hope the first same-sex weddings in Methodist chapels will take place in the autumn.

The Rev. Sam McBratney, chair of the Dignity and Worth campaign group, said it was a “momentous step on the road to justice” after many years of “painful conversations”.

“Some of us have been praying for this day to come for decades, and can hardly believe it is now here,” he said. “We are so grateful to our fellow Methodists for taking this courageous step to recognise and affirm the value and worth of LGBTQ+ relationships.

“We reassure those who do not support this move that we want to continue to work and worship with you in the Church we all love.”

However, in an emotional debate, Carolyn Lawrence, a former vice-president of the Methodist Conference, warned there was a “significant minority” of Methodists who were “planning on leaving or resigning their membership” as a result of the vote.

“Today is a line in the sand for many people and seen as a significant departure from our doctrine.”

The proposals were initially passed by the Methodist Conference in 2019 before being sent to local synods for consultation.

All but one of the 30 local synods have since voted in favour of the change. Wednesday’s confirmatory vote was due to take place at the 2020 conference but that was cancelled because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The changes mean the Methodist Church now holds two parallel definitions of marriage – one position says “marriage can only be between a man and a woman” and the other that “marriage can be between any two people”.

Church officials hope the dual definition will persuade conservative churches not to leave and protect ministers from discrimination claims if they refuse to marry gay couples.

The Rev Sonia Hicks, president of the Methodist Conference, said: “The debate today and our wider conversation has been conducted with grace and mutual respect.

“As we move forward together after this historic day for our Church, we must remember to continue to hold each other in prayer, and to support each other respecting our differences.”

Methodist Church replies GES over Ramadan directive to Wesley Girls http://34.58.148.58/methodist-church-replies-ges-over-ramadan-directive-to-wesley-girls/ Wed, 05 May 2021 10:15:01 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1955306 The Methodist Church Ghana has rejected the Ghana Education Service’ (GES) directive to Wesley Girls’ High School to allow Muslim students to partake in the Ramadan fast.

According to the Church, the school’s rule on fasting is a long-standing one that is also non-religious and various renowned Muslim ladies in Ghana have passed through the school adhering to it.

In a statement signed by its Administrative Bishop, Rt Rev Michael Bossman, the church said it took a strong exception to the directive.

Wesley Girls’ High School had prevented a Muslim student, Bushira Ishmael, from fasting as its way of preventing students from developing various health conditions.

Her father, Ishmael Zakaria Alhassan stormed the school in Cape Coast to withdraw his ward from the school.

RELATED:

The decision caused the Muslim Caucus in Parliament to hold a meeting with the leadership of the Methodist Church in Ghana over the matter.

The National Chief Imam, Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu is said to be disappointed in the decision taken by the school.

Subsequently, the GES in a statement asked parents of such wards to write to the school relieving it of any obligation should such students suffer health complications.

But the Church says it cannot accede to the unilateral directive, insisting that the GES respects the long-standing partnership between the government and Mission Schools.

The Methodist Church, Ghana has disclosed that it is not bound by the decision of the Britain Methodist Church regarding the legalisation of same sex marriage.

“Everyone seems to have a take on issues due to social media and given the seriousness of the situation before us and what had gone on, it was important that the Methodist Church, Ghana clarifies our stance,” the church noted.

“We still believe in the authority of the Bible and the sacredness of the covenant of marriage which ought to be experienced between a male and female. We reject any revisionist interpretation of the Bible because the decision made at the British congress clearly goes against the Bible,” the church emphasised.

Ms Portia Owusu, a 16-year old member of the Church, was the first maiden to be initiated under the supervision of the Very Rev. Solomon Bruce, Minister in-charge of the Circuit.

He was assisted by some traditional authorities for the success of the programme, aimed at giving the opportunity to the maidens in the church to cherish their virginity and also lead morally-upright lives.

The well-attended ceremony, interspersed with traditional drumming and other customary rites, as part of measures to revive African consciousness within the church.

Dubbed “2018 Traditional Day”, the programme saw the young girl, clad in a white cloth (tied around the chest down to the knee) and decked with some traditional beads being unveiled to the church, after undergoing the ceremonial rites.

As part of the rites, the young lady being initiated was also made to eat a special traditional meal (mashed ripe plantain and some hard boiled) eggs.

Very Rev. Bruce, speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on the sideline of the programme, said it was the first of such cultural events to be openly held in the church.

The new move is widely seen as an aberration of a debatable perception that customs and traditions should not part of Christian worship, but Very Rev Bruce thinks otherwise.

“The Methodist Church sees nothing wrong with the African culture,” he said and affirmed the leadership’s resolve to integrate acceptable traditional norms and values into the church’s activities.

Church urges nationwide dialogue on towing levy http://34.58.148.58/church-urges-nationwide-dialogue-towing-levy/ Tue, 08 Aug 2017 18:44:50 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=373691 The Kumasi Diocesan Methodist Church is urging nationwide dialogue on the mandatory towing levy to deepen public understanding of the policy.
It indicated that majority of the people had not properly understood and remained unconvinced about the proposed approach to the implementation of the policy and therefore the need for stronger engagement and wider consultation with all stakeholders.
The Right Reverend Christopher Nyarko Andam, the Diocesan Bishop, said the situation should not be created that would make it seem like this was an imposition – against the will of the people.
Stating the position of the church on the levy, which has generated so much controversy, he said although the move by the government to curtail road crashes caused by broken vehicles, left unattended, was a move in the right direction, for now, it must be put on hold.
“Let us take our time to cut off all the rough edges to ensure that we put in place a good policy that will be beneficial to all and sundry.”
Bishop Andam was addressing a press conference held in Kumasi to herald this year’s annual prophetic and healing convention of the diocesan church.
The five-day convention, under the theme “Expanding the Kingdom of God: the Holy Spirit Factor”, aims at helping members of the church to renew their faith and promote their spiritual growth.
It would also provide the platform to educate them on their civic responsibilities and motivate them to find space to contribute to the development of the nation.
Bishop Andam expressed the excitement of the church at the bold decision by the government to implement the free senior high school (SHS) policy.
He, however, advised that it went the extra mile to make sure that the quality of secondary education was not compromised.
He added that the government must not only invest in expanding access, but equally importantly, the quality.
“As a nation, we must dedicate equal attention to quality tuition, availability of teaching logistics and teacher motivation, not only in the big cities but equitably in rural and deprived areas.”
He underlined the unswerving commitment of the church to continually engage the government on improving the educational system.
