In the first incident, a dormitory building under construction collapsed on Saturday, resulting in the death of three individuals, including two vocational students and a carpenter.

Five others sustained serious injuries and are receiving treatment at the hospital.

Joemens Kpormetey Zonal Council Officer of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Mr. Christopher Appiah, said in an interview that workers were engaged in concrete works on the second floor when the building suddenly caved way.

Preliminary investigations, he stated confirmed that the builder had not acquired the necessary permit for construction.

He said it also came out that the building materials were substandard.

In a related development, on Sunday, August 25, a fire outbreak destroyed more than 80 stores and sheds at the Kasoa New Market.

The fire was suspected to had started from a gas cylinder explosion that spread rapidly to other areas.

A security guard, Mr. Joseph Amoah recounted how he heard a loud blast during a routine patrol, followed by the inferno which destroyed property belonging to traders who sell various goods, including groceries, foodstuffs, and hardware.

Mr Appiah said it was suspected that the fire could have been caused by a lingering fire because the starting point was in a non-electrical area.

He called on traders and smokers to desist from cooking and sleeping in their stores and stop from smoking in the market.

A carpenter and three others were confirmed dead after the store building they were working on collapsed.

In an interview with Adom News, an eyewitness, Nana Akwesi, revealed that the workers were on the second floor when the incident occurred.

He said the carpenter died on the spot, while the other three died while being transported to the hospital.

Meanwhile, the Assemblyman for Joe-men – Kpomotey Electoral Area, Mustapha Mohammed, expressed shock at the incident.

According to reports, the Saturday afternoon fire burnt the shops and its contents running into millions of cedis into ashes.

The affected shop owners include TV repairers, decorations, provision stores, carpentry, among others.

In an interview with Adom News, ADO1 Charles Nyameyire in charge of operations at the Buduburam fire station said the cause of the fire is unknown.

He stated that, the firefighters received a distress call around 1:06 pm and arrived at the scene at about 1:15 pm.

ADO1 Nyameyire said the fire was intense but they managed to contain and prevented it from spreading to other shops.

The victims who had nothing to salvage have appealed to the government and well meaning individuals to come to their aid.

According to head of the market security team, Alahji Haruna Tetteh Mensah, the suspect dressed as a woman under the guise of being a trader, took advantage of the seemingly empty state of the market to steal.

He was dressed in trousers and a blouse, head scarf and had a cloth wrapped around his waist.

But luck run out on him when traders became suspicious of his activities and looks and raised an alarm.

The suspect was apprehended and subsequently handed over to the Kasoa new market Police station for further investigation.

The security chief told Adom News’ Seth Kofi Adjei that, they have recorded series of theft in the market.

They have therefore resolved to increase patrols to safeguard goods in the market especially during the festive Christmas season.
