The striker netted for the 39th time in World Cup qualifying matches, making him the joint-highest ever scorer alongside Guatemala’s Carlos Ruiz – and three ahead of Argentina’s Lionel Messi.

Ronaldo, 40, extended his international record to 141 goals in 223 appearances for Portugal, the most by any male player for the country.

His goal at the Puskas Arena on Tuesday came from the penalty spot in the 58th minute after Hungary forward Barnabas Varga had a 21st-minute opener cancelled out by Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva 15 minutes later.

Varga equalised in the 84th minute and the hosts looked set for a point, but Joao Cancelo fired home just two minutes later to earn a dramatic victory for Roberto Martinez’s side.

Ronaldo also scored twice in Portugal’s 5-0 win over Armenia on Saturday, leaving them top of Group F with six points from the opening two matches. Hungary are third on one point alongside the Republic of Ireland, who suffered a 2-1 setback in Armenia.

Hungary defeat Scotland to stay alive at Euro 2024 http://34.58.148.58/hungary-defeat-scotland-to-stay-alive-at-euro-2024/ Sun, 23 Jun 2024 21:26:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2412246 Scotland’s hopes of making the last 16 of Euro 2024 were shattered on Sunday when Hungary’s Kevin Csoboth grabbed a winning goal in the 10th minute of injury time of their Group A clash.

Hungary kept up their hopes of making the next round as a best third-placed team.

The match was overshadowed by a sickening injury suffered by Hungary striker Barnabas Varga who was stretchered off after a collision late in the game.

After a long delay, medics took the 29-year-old player from the pitch while a sheet was draped around the stretcher.

Euro 2024: Musiala shines as Germany beat Hungary to reach last 16 http://34.58.148.58/euro-2024-musiala-shines-as-germany-beat-hungary-to-reach-last-16/ Wed, 19 Jun 2024 21:28:11 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2410865 Jamal Musiala scored again as Germany continued their winning start to Euro 2024 with victory over Hungary to become the first side through to the knockout stages.

The Bayern Munich forward impressed throughout and netted midway through the first half, drilling a powerful effort inches past the post afterwards, and was later given a standing ovation when he was substituted late in the second half.

Hungary were frustrated with his opener, claiming a foul from Ilkay Gundogan on defender Willi Orban before the Barcelona midfielder teed up Musiala to fire into the roof of the net.

A video assistant referee (VAR) check confirmed the on-field decision as Musiala celebrated with his team-mates in front of Hungary supporters behind the goal.

Hungary thought they had snatched an equaliser on the stroke of half-time but Roland Sallai’s rebound header was ruled out for a clear offside.

Instead, Germany extended their lead in the second half when former Manchester City player Gundogan was left unmarked to slot comfortably past goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi.

After their dominant 5-1 win over Scotland, Germany were made to work harder for the win here – with Hungary threatening on occasions and defending stubbornly.

Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai showed his quality on set-pieces, curling a terrific effort goalwards which needed saving by Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

Szoboszlai came close again in a bright period in the first half but was denied by an excellent block from Jonathan Tah.

Germany’s performance was encouraging though. They showed patches of creativity and control, doing enough to get over the line and make it six points from their opening two games.

Their place in the last 16 is confirmed and victory over Switzerland in Frankfurt on Sunday (20:00 BST) would put them through as Group A winners.

It is a damaging outcome for Hungary, following their opening defeat by Switzerland, and they will need to bounce back from their frustrations to beat Scotland next to have any chance of going through.

“I’ve never complained in my career as a coach. I’ve never looked for excuses but what the referee did tonight – I mean, come on,” said Hungary boss Marco Rossi afterwards.

“It’s something that I think even the Germans have seen – the referee had double standards. The VAR at this level didn’t say anything.

“Germany would have won anyways because they were better than us but the referee was the worst on the pitch.”

Nagelsmann hopes for more of the same against Hungary http://34.58.148.58/nagelsmann-hopes-for-more-of-the-same-against-hungary/ Wed, 19 Jun 2024 06:23:07 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2410471 Julian Nagelsmann hopes Germany will play “more or less the same” as they did in their victory over Scotland when they face Hungary on Wednesday.

The Euro 2024 hosts ran away as comfortable 5-1 winners – the biggest victory in an opening game of a Euros.

But Nagelsmann is wary of Hungary’s threat in Stuttgart, despite claiming they are on “a similar level” to Scotland.

“Maybe they have to play a little bit more attacking because otherwise they might be eliminated from the tournament but we hope to play more or less the same as we did against Scotland,” said Nagelsmann.

“Hungary are a team who play a very good transitional game and it doesn’t matter which striker is playing. They are very dangerous on set-pieces.

“I’ve prepared my players and I hope we put everything on the pitch.”

Nagelsmann, a former manager of Hoffenheim, RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich, has been to the home of VfB Stuttgart on many occasions in the Bundesliga and hopes the fans can produce a strong atmosphere.

“I was here for some matches and mainly saw Stuttgart supporters but I hope lots of them are also supporters for the national team,” he said.

“Sometimes you feel the atmosphere. I was quite happy with it [in the first game] but of course better is always possible.”

Germany defender Maximilian Mittelstadt, who also plays for Stuttgart, is looking forward to playing at his home ground but knows it won’t be easy.

“I took many great things from this stadium this season. I hope I can add another good memory,” he added.

“Hungary will be very difficult. If we do any mistakes it could be really hurtful, especially with [Hungary and Liverpool midfielder] Dominik Szoboszlai.”

‘The German team is better than us’

Meanwhile, Hungary manager Marco Rossi has dubbed Germany the “toughest team to play against right now” after their impressive opening performance on home soil.

But he hopes to see a reaction from his players after a 3-1 loss to Switzerland left them third in the group.

“We will do our very best. We know the German team is better than us. We can say this and nobody needs to take offence. It can motivate us.

“We can give it our best shot. Hopefully we can grasp a point and that will give us a chance to qualify for the next round. Everyone has to give 100%.

“We can see what they can do. They are the only team who have dominated a match from the beginning to the end without hesitating.”

Union Berlin and Hungary midfielder Andras Schafer hopes their knowledge of the German team will help them.

“It’s not a disadvantage that we have played here for quite a few games and we often play against German players or have them as team-mates,” he said.

“Of course it is a benefit for us. It would be much more difficult if we had never played in Stuttgart. Everyone has some sort of experience of the German team.

“They have these top-class players but we want to compete against them as a team to get at least one or possibly three points.”

Switzerland ease past Hungary in Euro 2024 opener http://34.58.148.58/switzerland-ease-past-hungary-in-euro-2024-opener/ Sat, 15 Jun 2024 11:43:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2409484 Switzerland battled their way to victory over Hungary as they made a winning start to their Euro 2024 campaign at Cologne Stadium.

Kwadwo Duah justified his surprise inclusion by Murat Yakin as he slotted home his first international goal, before Michel Aebischer doubled Switzerland’s lead on the stroke of half-time.

Barnabas Varga gave Hungary hope with 30 minutes left after the striker guided Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai’s brilliantly weighted cross beyond Yann Sommer.

Substitute Breel Embolo secured the three points in stoppage time with a lovely lobbed finish over Peter Gulacsi.

Scotland remain bottom of Group A after the 5-1 thrashing at the hands of Germany while Switzerland sit second – behind the tournament hosts.

Yakin’s side gained control of the ball from the off and dominated the play as Hungary created little to nothing in attack during the first 45 minutes.

Duah, who had only played 45 minutes for his nation prior to this, was slipped in brilliantly by Aebischer before finishing beyond Gulacsi in the 12th minute.

On the stroke of half-time, left-wing back Aebischer cut in on his right foot to expertly place a strike beyond the diving Gulacsi from 20-yards.

In the 63rd minute, Varga missed a gilt-edge chance to halve the deficit but he could only direct his header wide of a post.

Minutes later, Varga bravely pounced on Szoboszlai’s ball into the box to halve the deficit.

But, despite being pushed on by thousands of fans, the resurgent Hungarians were unable to find an equaliser.

Embolo, who is only just back from an ACL injury, entered the action in the 74th minute and found the net 19 minutes later, sparking wild celebrations.

The Swiss now face Scotland in this stadium on Wednesday – live on BBC One – while Hungary face hosts Germany earlier in the day.

Late Goretzka equaliser puts Germany into Euro 2020 last 16 http://34.58.148.58/late-goretzka-equaliser-puts-germany-into-euro-2020-last-16/ Thu, 24 Jun 2021 07:55:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1977885 A barely believable match on a barely fathomable night in a barely comprehensible sport ended with Leon Goretzka’s late goal earning Germany their spot in the last 16.

They finished second in the group and face England next, while Hungary go home after giving a tremendous account of themselves.

In driving Munich rain, Germany started well, but Hungary defended stoutly and showed enterprising intent on the counter. And on 10 minutes, they had something to show for it, Roland Sallai dropping off to cross brilliantly, and Adam Szalai contorted his body beautifully to send a diving header skidding past Manuel Neuer.

Germany pushed for an equaliser but struggled to create while Hungary remained a threat, but then on 66 minutes and out of nothing, Kai Havertz headed home from underreported the bar after Peter Gulasci had come for Joshua Kimmich’s free-kick and missed his punch.

For a second, Germany were into the east 16, but Hungary flew at them directly from kick-off and when Szalai put a ball in between Leroy Sane and Mats Hummels, Andras Schafer burst between them to beat Neuer a second time.
