According to the development expert, the business of the state is simply to ensure that there is an enabling environment for many employment opportunities to be created for persons seeking employment.

Professor Bonsu says pragmatic examples of developed nations around the world support his strongly held views that government’s business is not to create jobs.

“The government doesn’t owe anybody a job. In fact, really nobody owes anybody a job. It is up to us as individuals looking for jobs to find them or create them,” he told Blessed Sogah, host of The Pulse on JoyNews, Friday, October 7, 2022.

When asked about the penchant for politicians to promise jobs for the youth in party manifestos and at campaign rallies, Professor Bonsu said, “I’m not going to promise anybody a job because I don’t think it is anybody’s role to promise anybody a job. It is not the government’s role to create these jobs. it is the individual.”

Government has come under intense pressure to tackle the issue of unemployment which experts warn could be a national security crisis in the near future.

But for professor Bonsu, the role of policymakers is to be pragmatic by adopting measures that will create sustainable jobs for the youth.

Public sector overpopulated; people are paid for doing no work – GIMPA Rector http://34.58.148.58/public-sector-overpopulated-people-are-paid-for-doing-no-work-gimpa-rector/ Sat, 08 Oct 2022 23:12:16 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2169896 Rector of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), Professor Samuel Kwaku Bonsu, has argued that Ghana has a seeming overburdened public sector, a reason for which state agencies are struggling to be profitable or efficient.

According to the academic, there is sufficient data from international organizations such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and also the annual budget of the state, which clearly indicates that the bloated recruitment of people into public service is fast becoming a drain on the public purse aside it’s associated problem of crippling the optimum functioning of state agencies.

“There are too many people in the system. We spend a lot of money taking care of people in the system whose contributions are negligible. You have people who are not doing anything but are still in the system,” he said.

When asked by Blessed Sogah, host of The Pulse on Friday, October 7, 2022, about the possible remedial measures, Professor Bonus intimated that the powers that be ought to make a conscious effort to sanitize the sector in order to free up the fiscal space and also to protect the public purse.
