Busia Institute calls for enhanced support for elderly during Ghana Month celebrations http://34.58.148.58/busia-institute-calls-for-enhanced-support-for-elderly-during-ghana-month-celebrations/ Tue, 26 Mar 2024 20:50:19 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2373538 The Busia Institute for Rural and Democratic Development (BIRDD) has issued a press statement in celebration of the ongoing Ghana Month, extending congratulations to all citizens.

The Institute, represented by its Executive Director Anane Agyei, expressed confidence that the spirit of unity and camaraderie observed during the celebration will inspire greater dedication to national service.

One of the key messages in the statement is a call for increased attention to the needs of older people within society, emphasizing the detrimental effects of loneliness on their well-being.

The BIRDD stressed the importance of caring for the elderly, highlighting their invaluable contributions to the nation during their active years.

Encouraging intergenerational knowledge exchange, the Institute urged the youth to tap into the wealth of wisdom possessed by the elderly, citing the potential for learning about history, culture, and traditions.

They emphasised the role of healthy relationships between older people and various sectors including families, friends, organizations, and the government in fostering community and national development.

Commending government initiatives such as the Senior Citizens’ Day, the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) program, and the exemption of older people from National Health Insurance payments, the BIRDD proposed declaring Ghana Month as a period dedicated to appreciating the elderly.

They suggested activities such as forums for intergenerational dialogue and community-based assistance programs as ways to honour and support older citizens.

The press statement follows a series of donations made by the Busia Institute to elderly individuals in March 2024 as part of their commitment to Ghana Month celebrations.

The Institute reiterated the importance of acknowledging and supporting the elderly, echoing the Akan adage that emphasizes following the footsteps of those who came before us.

Adom Ghana Month: Tetteh Quarshie, the blacksmith who brought cocoa to Ghana http://34.58.148.58/adom-ghana-month-tetteh-quarshie-the-blacksmith-who-brought-cocoa-to-ghana/ Tue, 12 Mar 2024 10:29:27 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2367341 Tetteh Quarshie was an apprentice in a Basel mission workshop at Akropong in the Eastern region of Ghana.

Historical accounts state that through his experience as a blacksmith, he was able to travel to the Fernando Po Island (now Bioko in Equatorial Guinea) in 1870.

His rise to fame began after six years, when Quarshie, whose hobby was then farming, came back to Ghana with several cocoa beans, also known as Amelonado, and planted them on his farm at Mampong-Akuapim, a small town in the Eastern Region of Ghana.

The crop, which matures within 3 to five years, began being consumed by the people of Mampong, who would later know how to grow it with the help of Quarshie.

Soon, Mampong became the first cocoa hub of the country as the crop was now a commercial product for huge business and income.

By 1891, cocoa beans or cuttings were being sent to other countries such as Nigeria and Sierra Leone.

Sadly, Tetteh Quarshie was not able to witness his country’s first official export of two cocoa bags in 1893 as he died on Christmas Day, December 25, 1892.

His relatives made a petition to the Gold Coast Government on February 25th, 1925 for a grant for the upkeep of some of Tetteh Quarshie’s relatives.

The then Ghanaian Vice-Principal of Achimota College, Dr. J.E.K. Aggrey strenuously took up the appeal. His friend, Sir Gordon Guggisberg set up the Tetteh Quarshie Memorial Scholarship at Achimota College. Other honors were bestowed on him.

Family

Tetteh Quarshie was born in about 1842 to a farmer from Teshie known as Mlekubo. His mother was known as Ashong-Fio from Labadi, both hailing from the Ga-Dangme ethnic group. In his teens Tetteh Quarshie became an apprentice in a Basel Mission workshop at Akropong. Due to his hard work he soon became a master blacksmith and was in fact the first blacksmith to be established at Akuapim-Mampong.  His hobby was farming.

Tetteh Quarshie cocoa farm

The Tetteh Quarshie cocoa farm, also known as the Ecomuseum of Cocoa, is the founding cocoa farm in Ghana. It is located in Akuapem-Mampong around 58km from Accra. Tetteh Quarshie established the farm in 1879 using seeds brought back from Bioko, Equatorial Guinea Three trees planted by Quarshie remain at the farm.

The farm is currently around one acre in size, and is managed by the Cocoa Research Institute of Ghana.

Although this feat did not continue in subsequent years, Ghana’s cocoa is still praised as being of the highest quality, earning the country hundreds of millions of dollars annually from the export of the beans and processed materials.

Ghana’s cocoa sector also employs over 2 million people and constitutes a large portion of Ghana’s GDP.

Honour

In honour of his contribution to the above, various memorials in Ghana have been set up in the name of Tetteh Quarshie, namely the Tetteh Quarshie Memorial Hospital, Tetteh Quarshie Art market, Tetteh Quarshie Interchange and the Tetteh Quarshie House in Achimota.

Ghana Month on Adom is sponsored by Nkulenu Industries, Tostaty Tom, Franko Trading Enterprise, and Obuase Bitters.

Adom Ghana Month: Remembering Nana Asamani who took Christiansborg Castle from the Danes http://34.58.148.58/adom-ghana-month-remembering-nana-asamani-who-took-christiansborg-castle-from-the-danes/ Thu, 07 Mar 2024 10:10:07 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2366034 Nana Asamani, revered as the first black Governor of Christiansborg Castle in Osu, Accra, left an indelible mark on history with his daring feats and astute business acumen.

As the Akwamuhene, he orchestrated a cunning scheme in 1693, outmaneuvering the Danes and seizing control of Christiansborg Castle.

Employing shrewd tactics, Asamani negotiated the castle’s return to Danish hands in 1694, pocketing 50 marks of gold in the process.

Remarkably, he retained possession of the castle keys following the transaction, solidifying his legacy as a masterful strategist.

The keys to Christiansborg Castle

Beyond his exploits at Christiansborg Castle, Asamani thrived as a prominent figure in Accra’s trade landscape, fostering alliances between the Danes, Ga-Adangbe people, and Akwamu traders.

His proficiency in the Danish language and adept disguise as a cook and interpreter facilitated his infiltration of the castle, enabling him to meticulously study its operations and inhabitants.

In a bold move, Asamani and 80 armed men, disguised as traders, infiltrated the castle under the guise of inspecting merchandise.

Seizing the opportunity, they unleashed a surprise attack on the unsuspecting Danes, wresting control of the stronghold after a fierce battle. Asamani’s leadership saw the installation of the Akwamu flag, symbolizing their triumph over colonial forces.

Despite relinquishing control of Christiansborg Castle to the Danes, Asamani’s legacy endures through the enduring possession of its keys by the Akwamu people.

These keys serve as a poignant reminder of their defiance against colonial oppression, cherished as a symbol of resilience and pride.

Today, the castle stands as a testament to Ghana’s rich history, having served as the residence of its first president, Kwame Nkrumah, following the country’s attainment of republic status in 1960.

As part of Ghana’s independence day celebrations every year, schools and other institutions use the month of March to showcase the culture and other things from the country.

In photos shared on the school’s Facebook page, the youngsters are seen learning the cooking of some Ghanaian delicacies as well as playing some traditional games.

A photo showed a boy and a girl trying to pound fufu. The girl sat down by the mortar with the boy holding a pestle.

Also, a group of three pupils mimicking the preparation of banku. One, a white girl, sat behind a pot on a makeshift tripod and held a wooden spatula. She was trying to show how to stir corn dough on fire. Another knelt beside her with a fan to show how to fan the fire. A boy among them bent over to observe.

Adom Ghana Month: Celebrating Krobo Edusei; Minister without portfolio http://34.58.148.58/adom-ghana-month-celebrating-krobo-edusei-minister-without-portfolio/ Thu, 02 Mar 2023 06:57:08 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2223325 Political activist, Kwabena Edusei, popularly known as Krobo Edusei, played an instrumental role in Ghana’s struggle for independence.

He won the heart of Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah when he mobilized people in the Ashanti region and galvanised support for the Convention Peoples Party (CPP) in the region to win the 1956 general elections.

President Nkrumah trusted the competence of Krobo Edusei and appointed him to numerous political positions even though he had no educational qualifications.

First cabinet of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah

With no formal education, he endeared himself to the core principles of service to his people through party service and he is remembered today, not for his qualifications but that he was a nationalist.

As we celebrate Ghana month, Adomonline.com brings you a profile of this illustrious son of Ghana.

Early Life

Edusei was born on 26 December 1915 at Ampabame in the Ashante region. His father was called Kwabena Edusei and his mother, Ama Darkowah.

The young Edusei grew up at the court of a sub-chieftain of the Ashanti Kingdom, the Bantamahene, the chief of Bantama.

His stay at the royal court exposed him to the speech patterns of Asante courtiers and the traditions and folklore of the people—influences that were to show later in his political life.

Edusei received his elementary education at the Government Boys’ School in Kumasi.

Family

Krobo Edusei married three times and had numerous children who remain active in the Ghanaian business world.

The more well-known of his children include prominent millionaire Ghanaian businessman and ports operator, Yaw Krobo Edusei, Lucy Lamptey, former legal director of the Ghanaian government agency Social Security and National Insurance Trust, property entrepreneur and former Coca-Cola executive, Comfort Emden and Catherine Krobo Edusei, entrepreneur, owner and CEO of the Eden Tree brand.

Political life

Due to his eloquence and strong sense of influence and popularity, he served as a Minister without Portfolio, Minister for Agriculture, Minister for Transport and Communication and Minister for the Interior.

He excellently served in that capacity until Nkrumah was overthrown.

Following the overthrow of Nkrumah’s government, Edusei was imprisoned and subsequently released.

He continued to be politically active and very influential as a senior member of the People’s National Party (PNP), a party formed from the ashes of Nkrumaist CPP.

When the PNP went on to win Ghana’s second post-Nkrumah elections, Edusei became a powerful figure in Hilla Limann’s government.

Following the 1981 overthrow of the Limann government, Edusei was again imprisoned but was released in 1983 and died of complications from diabetes.

Krobo Edusei controversies

The controversies that surrounded the political life of Krobo Edusei were extended even further than that.

In 1963, Krobo Adusei is reported to have enstooled a cocoa farmer by the name Appiah Kubi as a chief, after the latter promised to pay £2000 that was charged him to the former Minister.

This was however quickly withdrawn when Appiah Kubi paid only £300 from the expected charge.

Krobo Adusei told the Jiagge Commission that he owned fourteen houses, a luxurious beach hut and had bought a long lease on a London flat, all worth about £130,000.

Mr Edusei was dismissed by President Nkrumah in April 1962 after his wife was severely criticised for having purchased an $8,400 bed.

Krobi Edusei was known to be a “Casanova”, as he placed much premium on giving birth to a lot of children.

A reliable report indicates that he married three times. Among his prominent children include Comfort Emden; Yaw Krobo Edusei; Lucy Lamptey; and Catherine Krobo Edusei, Entrepreneur, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Eden Tree Brand.

Adom Ghana Month Personality of the Day: Theodosia Okoh, Ghanaian who designed Ghana Flag http://34.58.148.58/adom-ghana-month-personality-of-the-day-theodosia-okoh-ghanaian-who-designed-ghana-flag/ Wed, 01 Mar 2023 08:07:26 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2222905 Theodosia Salome Okoh was a Ghanaian teacher born on 13 June 1922 who was an artist known for designing Ghana’s national flag in 1957.

She exhibited her artwork internationally and also played a leading role in the development of hockey in Ghana.

Early years and education

She was born as Theodosia Salome Abena Kumea Asihene at Effiduase to the Very Reverend Emmanuel Victor Asihene, a former moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, and Madam Dora Asihene, both from Anum in the Asuogyaman District of Ghana’s Eastern Region.

She was the fourth of eight children. She had the opportunity to travel around Ghana and abroad with her father.

She started school at Ashanti Efiduasi Primary School, continued to the Basel Mission Middle, Senior and Teacher Training Schools at Agogo and then to Achimota School where she received three years of training in Fine Art.

Mrs Okoh trained as a teacher and was posted to teach at Kukurantumi, upon completion of her course.

While teaching, Madam Okoh won a scholarship to study at the Achimota College Art School in 1942.

In 1949, she got married to Mr Enoch Kwabena Okoh who worked at the Colonial Secretary’s office and the couple had three children.

She had the unique experience of being invited to prepare a dinner at the Flagstaff House for Queen Elizabeth II in 1961.

Career

When on Ghana’s Independence from Britain the need for a new flag was advertised and she submitted her design, which was adopted as the national flag of Ghana by the country’s first president Kwame Nkrumah on 6 March 1957.

As she explained in an interview: “I decided on the three colours of red, gold and green because of the geography of Ghana. Ghana lies in the tropics and [is] blessed with rich vegetation. The colour Gold was influenced by the mineral-rich nature of our lands and Red commemorates those who died or worked for the country’s independence. Then the five-pointed lone star which is the symbol of African emancipation and unity in the struggle against colonialism.”

Theodosia Okoh was the first female chairman of the Ghana Hockey Association and later President of the Ghana Hockey Federation for more than 20 years, and it was during her tenure that Ghana first qualified for both the Hockey World Cup and the Olympic Games.

She was named “the Joan of Arc of Ghana hockey” by Ohene Djan “because she rose to the occasion to save Ghana hockey when men were faltering and vacillating about the development of the game. This is also the reason why the National Hockey Stadium was named after her in 2004”. She was a long-time patron of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana.

Personal life

She was married to Enoch Kwabena Okoh, Head of Civil Service in the Kwame Nkrumah regime in the 1960s, and had three children: E. Kwasi Okoh, Stanley Kwame Okoh and Theodosia Amma Jones-Quartey.

Awards

Theodosia Okoh was awarded the Grand Medal (GM) by the nation, and a number of awards from other institutions in the country. She received a citation from the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation and the National Sports Awards in 2004, as well as an award from the Sports Writers Association of Ghana and an award from the TV Africa series Obaa Mbo.

Legacy

Theodosia Salome Okoh was the first female chairman of the Ghana Hockey Association and later President of the Ghana Hockey Federation for more than 20 years, and it was during her tenure that Ghana first qualified for both the Hockey World Cup and the Olympic Games.

The Accra hockey pitch is named after her in recognition of her contribution to the game, and in 2013 a resolution was overturned to rename the Theodosia Okoh Hockey Stadium.

The Asuogyaman District Assembly in the Eastern Region has erected a bust in her honour at Anum, her hometown.

Okoh’s grandson, animator/director Ian Jones-Quartey, based the character Nanefua Pizza in the Cartoon Network animated show Steven Universe on her.

Late-life experience

Before her death, she lamented over the change of the National Hockey Pitch from her name (to John Evans Atta Mills National Hockey Stadium) while she was still alive.

But it will interest you to know that Paga is also home to the Pikworo Slave Camp which is a very important historical landmark for the country, although little is known of it.

Dating back to as early as 1704, this slave camp is known to be a place where slaves from Northern Ghana and Southern Burkina Faso were often kept for several days before they were carted to the Salaga slave market in the Savannah region, for sale and onward transit out of Africa.

For our Ghana Month Series, Joy News puts a spotlight on the Pikworo Slave camp located in the Nania suburb of Paga in the Kasena–Nankana west district.
