Four others are reported to be in critical condition and are receiving treatment at the St. Elizabeth Hospital in Hwidiem.

The tragic incident occurred late Saturday night into the early hours of Sunday at a site believed to be newly excavated.

Adom News’ Sammy Asare, reporting on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, said the victims had moved to the area after hearing that significant gold deposits had been discovered.

The exact cause of the collapse remains unclear.

However, experienced small-scale miners in the area suggested that the victims may have failed to reinforce the pit walls with wooden pegs—a common safety measure used to prevent cave-ins during excavation.

Their absence could have left the sides unstable.

Following initial fears that more miners were trapped beneath the debris, the Assemblyman and local authorities mobilised residents to dig through the collapsed earth.

After hours of searching, no additional victims were found. The site has since been covered to prevent further danger.

The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the St. Elizabeth Hospital Mortuary.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, January 7, when the victim reportedly entered the pit but failed to resurface.

As of four to five hours after the incident, residents said the body had still not been retrieved from the water-filled pit, as rescue efforts continued.

Community members say the pit was abandoned by illegal miners and left uncovered, turning it into a death trap, especially during the rainy season when such pits easily fill with water.

Residents told Adom News that this is not an isolated case, alleging that at least two similar drowning incidents have previously occurred in the area under comparable circumstances.

They are calling on authorities, particularly the Minerals Commission, Environmental Protection Agency and local government officials, to take urgent action to reclaim abandoned galamsey sites and compel miners to properly reclaim degraded lands to prevent further loss of life.

Police have been informed of the incident, and investigations are expected to commence once the body is retrieved.

Locals reported that several lives have already been lost in similar incidents in the Juaboso District, warning that without urgent intervention, more deaths could follow.

“We are tired of burying our children and loved ones. The government and the District Assembly must act now to reclaim these lands and stop illegal mining once and for all,” one resident lamented.

Mpasatia galamsey pit undergoes reclamation efforts http://34.58.148.58/mpasatia-galamsey-pit-undergoes-reclamation-efforts/ Fri, 11 Apr 2025 08:50:01 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2524117

Reclamation efforts have begun at the Mpasatia Yaw Nkwanta illegal mining site in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region, following the deaths of four miners within four months.

The latest fatalities occurred on April 1, when two individuals, Kwame Charles and another miner known as Ben, lost their lives in a similar incident.

The alarming deaths prompted the Regional National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to instruct the district office to urgently cover the open pit. During a site visit on April 10, NADMO teams were seen working to reclaim the area and restore it for agricultural purposes.

Salifu Karim, the Assembly Member for Mpasatia Ahenbronum, emphasized the community’s decision to fill the pit to prevent further fatalities. “We have all agreed to fill the pit so that no one else will go there and lose their life,” he said.

Hajj Mohammed Nasir Ibrahim, the acting Regional Director of NADMO, confirmed that part of the site had been covered, but stressed the need for further work to fully restore the land.

He also mentioned that NADMO is collaborating with local police to enforce patrols in the area to prevent illegal mining activities.

The continued loss of life due to illegal mining, or ‘galamsey’, has sparked public concern over the effectiveness of current measures to address the issue.

A 2021 analysis of mining-related accidents in Ghana revealed that small-scale mining fatalities are disproportionately high, with 622 deaths reported in 36 accidents.

Many are now calling for more decisive and efficient actions to combat the dangerous practice and protect lives.

Others are believed to be trapped in the pit as rescue efforts to retrieve the illegal miners continue.

The identities of the dead and persons trapped in the illegal mining pit remain unknown.

It took the efforts of persons within the community to retrieve the bodies of the deceased, together with police and other security agencies, efforts are being made to rescue the others.

According to some members of the community, the concession is owned by an individual who has given them the authorization to mine without proper supervision.

Narrating the incident to Joy News, Nana Nkansah said, “they had mined deep into the pits. The top had become weak and that is how the place caved in.”

Nana Nkansah emphasized that the miners in the area deploy simple tools in the digging of pits which go deep into the bellies of the earth.

Bodies of the deceased are deposited at the morgue awaiting identification of family members.

This is the second time such incident has happened in the same pit being mined illegally.

Though the Ashanti Regional Security Council has waged war against illegal mining, the phenomenon persists in many areas of the Ashanti Region.
