Adom News sources say Mr Kwofie passed on the  afternoon of Thursday, May 2, 2024.

He had been sick for years and also suffered from dementia.

Mr Kwofie was over 90 years old.

He served as IGP from 1 January 1990 to 30 September 1996.

Mr Kwofie was succeeded by Peter Tenganabang Nanfuri who also passed on in February 2023.

Mr Nanfuri was the Paramount Chief of the Jirapa Traditional Area with the title Naa Ansoleh Ganaa II.

Present at the service was Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, IGP George Akuffo Dampare and other dignitaries in the police service.

In a post on Facebook, the Police noted that ”we are forever grateful for his contribution to the Ghana Police Service in particular, and to the country as a whole.

The late Inspector-General of Police, Mr Charles Odartey Lamptey, (Rtd) aka C. O. Lamptey, applied for an appointment in the Ghana Police Service on 9th July 1965, while working in the Ministry of Communications as a Senior Executive Officer.

His application was eventually approved by the then president and he was subsequently transferred to the Police Service and appointed Deputy Superintendent of Police on 25th November 1965.

Immediately after his appointment he joined the cadet course and was commissioned into the officer corps in January 1966. By dint of hard work, he earned further promotions as follows:

  • Superintendent of Police – 1st July 1967
  • Chief Superintendent of Police – 1st June 1970
  • Assistant Commissioner of Police – 1st March 1974
  • Deputy Commissioner – 1st August 1977

Mr. Charles Odartey Lamptey, (Rtd), after serving with high commitment and diligence, was appointed the Inspector-General of Police on 5th June, 1979; a position he held until his retirement from the Service on 27th November 1979.

Burial arrangement for former IGP announced http://34.58.148.58/burial-arrangement-for-former-igp-announced/ Thu, 18 Aug 2022 23:43:30 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2151558 Late former Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Charles Odartey Lamptey, is set to be buried on Saturday, August 20, 2022.

He will be laid in state at the forecourt of the State House where the funeral rites will also take place.

The late police officer will be buried at the Military Cemetery at Burma Camp, Accra and a thanksgiving held at the Ghana Police Church, 37 in his honour on Sunday.

Prior to this, a vigil to commemorate his memory had been scheduled for Thursday, August 18 at the family house at Adabraka near the Roxy Cinema.

Mr Odartey Lamptey served as IGP under the late Rawlings’ regime between June 5, 1979 and November 27, 1979, when he succeeded Benjamin Samuel Kofi Kwakye.

He is an in-law to the New Patriotic Party Greater Accra Regional Chairman, Divine Otoo Agorhom, who is married to Susana Lamley Lamptey, the former’s daughter.

Speaking in an interview with Adom News ahead of the burial, Mr Agorhom recounted the deceased was an inspiration to their marriage as he guided and advised them every step of the way.

Mr Agorhom stated he was proud to have been associated with the family of the late (Lawyer) Lamptey who died at age 92.

The final funeral rites saw the current IGP, James Oppong Boanuh and personnel from other security agencies, in attendance.

The Ghana Police Band was also in attendance to treat mourners with good and soul-soothing music.

Mr Ako passed on on Saturday, January 16, 2021, after battling a short illness.

He was a brave Police Officer whose career started on 4th April 1941 and ended on 30th June 1978 with an unblemished record.

He is remembered as the IGP who started the Police Hospital in 1976 and the first to procure armoured vehicles for the Formed Police Unit (then Armoured Car Squadron).

He is also the first to celebrate Police Week in Ghana, giving the public the opportunity to visit Police Stations across the country, to learn at first hand the day-to-day operations and activities of the service.

IGP Ako transformed the Ghana Police Service by a number of initiatives including the change of name of the Ghana Police from “Service” to a “Force” thereby making the Ghana Police “Self-Accounting”.

It was the 1992 Constitution which reverted the Ghana Police Force to a Service again.

His devoted service and leadership qualities earned him successive meritorious promotions to the ranks of: Deputy Superintendent of Police on 1st November 1961 and Superintendent of Police on 1st May, 1964.
