The Commission has described the reports as false and an attempt to malign and impugn their integrity.

This comes on the back of statements by Tamale South MP, Haruna Iddrisu, on the floor of Parliament that the field workers have not been paid and urged the Finance Ministry to release funds for payment.

Debating on the draft public elections regulations by the Electoral Commission (EC), the lawmaker said the EC must be adequately resourced to be able to carry out its mandate.

“Minister of Finance, the EC hasn’t even paid the members it used for the 2020 elections. Go and do what is right for them to pay them,” the former Minority Leader said on the floor of Parliament on Thursday.

But the EC said it instituted a system through which the field workers were paid through their bank accounts.

“The EC has to date paid all staff who worked during the 2020 elections. For the records the EC in a bid to ensure transparency and accountability in the use of public funds, instituted a system whereby field staff were paid through their bank accounts,” the statement read in part.

The Commission maintained any person or groups of persons claiming non-payment by the Commission for work done during the 2020 elections do not exist.

Naana Opoku-Agyemang didn’t make an impact in Central Region in 2020 elections – Obed Asamoah http://34.58.148.58/naana-opoku-agyemang-didnt-make-an-impact-in-central-region-in-2020-elections-obed-asamoah/ Mon, 21 Mar 2022 14:23:54 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2093825 Former Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr Obed Yao Asamoah, says former President John Mahama’s running mate in the 2020 general election was unable to make an impact in the Central Region.

In an interview with JoyNews’ Benjamin Akakpo on Monday, he said under Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang’s watch; the NDC lost a seat in her home Region.

“The lady who is a running mate to Mahama lost the Central Region in the last election. Lost a whole constituency,” the former Attorney-General said.

Dr Asamoah, however, did not disclose what constituency the opposition party lost.

The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) lost nine of its parliamentary seats to the opposition NDC which swept 13 out of the Region’s 23 seats with nine of them being new, snatched from the NPP.

Prior to the 2020 general election, the NPP had 19 seats while the opposition NDC held four parliamentary seats in the Region.

According to him, this could pose a danger for the party in the 2024 general elections should the governing NPP select Trade Minister, Alan Kyerematen, to run on the party’s ticket in the 2024 general election.

“Alan Kyerematen is a factor to consider. He could win. If he does, it poses a threat to the NDC in the Central region. Because his mother’s side is from Central Region.”

Dr Asamoah believes “there has to be some fresh thinking” in the opposition party.

“There could be some amends we make to make her succeed. But for now, she didn’t make an impact,” he stated.

Dr Asamoah further disclosed that the gains made by the NDC in the previous election were all in the country’s capitals.

In Accra, he said the disagreement between government and spare parts dealers worked in favour of the NDC.

“They (spare parts dealers) thought that the taxation against them was too much. A lot of them supported the NDC. We were prepared to allow Okada. That was also a significant factor against the NPP,” he added.

Ballot stuffing: Let’s meet at ECOWAS, I won’t run away from witness box – Mahama tells EC http://34.58.148.58/ballot-stuffing-lets-meet-at-ecowas-i-wont-run-away-from-witness-box-mahama-tells-ec/ Tue, 09 Nov 2021 19:57:17 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2041210 Former President John Mahama has expressed readiness to cooperate with a probe into an allegation of one million ballot sheets stuffed during the 2020 general election.

However, he will prefer the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to conduct the investigation.

This is because he believes the body will conduct an independent probe he is not sure the Ghana Police Service will be able to do.

“That is what I want, they said we should have an investigation, let’s have an investigation. But I don’t know if the police are the best to do that. I don’t know what the police are going to investigate.

“We want an independent inquiry or let’s go to ECOWAS. ECOWAS has an electoral body, let them come and investigate Ghana’s election of 2020,” he said on Accra-based XYZ.

Mr Mahama, who was the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) presidential candidate, on a Thank You tour alleged one million ballot papers were thumb-printed in the 2020 election.

RELATED:

The Electoral Commission (EC), upon hearing this allegation, asked the Ghana Police Service to investigate the matter which the NDC says it is happy about.

But to Mr Mahama, ECOWAS can probe the matter and bring finality to it, stating that he is ever ready to assist with the process.

“I will welcome it, I will testify. Under oath, I will swear an oath and testify. I won’t run away from the witness box,” he added.

Election 2020: EC saved country $90m http://34.58.148.58/election-2020-ec-saved-country-90m/ Thu, 14 Oct 2021 11:30:27 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2028242 The Electoral Commission (EC) saved the country $90 million in the conduct of the 2020 Election, the Chairperson of the commission, Mrs Jean Mensa, has disclosed.

That, she said, was achieved through a reduction of the cost of the election from $13 per person in 2016 to $7.7 in 2020.

Moreover, it also cut down the time it took a voter to vote from 10 to 12 minutes per voter to three to five minutes.

Mrs Mensa said Election 2020 was also the first election in the Fourth Republic to be fully funded by the government, with no donor funding to support the election management processes.

She was addressing the opening ceremony of the high-level parliamentary seminar on: “Two decades of democratic elections in ECOWAS member states: Achievements, challenges and the way forward”, in Winneba yesterday.

Transparency

The Chairperson of the EC said the commission achieved those feats, in spite of inflation, price hikes and the additional cost it incurred owing to the COVID-19 protocols it deployed throughout the election processes.

“I humbly refer to Ghana’s 2020 elections as historic for the transparency, credibility, cost-effectiveness, high turnout and peaceful conduct that characterised them. So orderly, so methodical, so calm were the polls on 7th December, 2020 that BBC Africa could find no other way to describe our elections than ‘boring’,” she said.

According to her, the elections were historic because “we conducted all our electoral processes and elections at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, without the spread of the virus”.

Democracy

Mrs Mensa said elections were one of the most significant building blocks of a democracy, as they helped preserve the sanctity of a democracy.

“Through elections, a people exercise their sovereign will to choose their own leaders, and through electoral laws and processes, a nation unites under the common purpose of protecting that sovereign will,” she said.

She, however, said elections and the processes that preceded them “sometimes prove divisive and de-stabilising and threaten the very cohesion they are designed to provide”.

MORE:

Key role

She said everyone had a key role in determining whether, going into the next two decades, “ours will be a story of a rising Africa, an inspiration and a repository of best practices for the lasting benefit of generations yet unborn, or whether it will be another sad African tale of a lost legacy and a broken promise to a generation that looked to us with hope”.

Mrs Mensa said the December 2020 elections in Ghana proved that the story of elections in the sub-region could. indeed. be an inspiration.

“That our story as West African states can be one that brings hope to our youth and light to the coming generation, and that we can provide best practices that the most advanced democracies of the world can learn from. Yes, we can,” she declared.

Odds and challenges

According to her, Ghana proved that elections in the sub-region could be efficiently conducted, in spite of the odds and challenges.

She noted, for instance, that the global COVID-19 pandemic caused a major disruption to Ghana’s election timetable as a result of the uncertainty, as well as the fact that suppliers of electoral materials were unable to meet the procurement schedules owing to the global lockdown.

She said the EC had only six months to conduct the elections, and that within that short space of time, “we completed every electoral process, including introducing and deploying a new Biometric Voter Management System, comprising hardware and software, and preparing a new biometric voters register”.

“This and other electoral processes were undertaken within a space of six months, from June 30th, when we started the registration exercise, to December 9th, when we declared the results,” she stated.

Fears and projection

Mrs Mensa said in spite of the fears and projection of a low turnout as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the EC compiled an entirely new biometric voters register in 38 days only, successfully registering over 17 million eligible Ghanaians in that short period of time and exceeding its initial target of 15 million registrants.

“The efficiency of our coverage in the voter registration exercise has been attested to by the recently released population census figures that place Ghana’s population at 30.8 million. The 17,027,000 voters on the register represents 55.2 per cent of the population of Ghana; a percentage that fully meets international standards for the registration of voters.

She said Ghana proved that electoral processes in West Africa could be transparent, as all the electoral activities were conducted in the full glare of the public.

Let the Citizen Know

The Chairperson of the EC said to further enhance the culture of transparency, the EC constantly engaged the public and the media in twice-weekly encounters dubbed: “Let the Citizen Know”, in the run-up to the elections.

“On this platform, we provided citizens with information on ongoing electoral activities and answered their questions and concerns. This helped to open up our process and demystify our work.

“Again, through this platform, we provided swift responses and facts to counter fake news, thereby substantially reducing the tension and suspicions that usually arise from fake news and the lack of information,” she said.

Collation of results

Mrs Mensa said on voting day, the EC introduced a new layer of scrutiny of the electoral process by introducing a regional level of collation of results.

“The Regional Collation centres enabled party agents to further scrutinise, affirm and collate results from constituencies within their regions before submission to the National Collation Centre. This further deepened the transparency of our elections and reduced the tension and suspicion that foment during long waits for constituency level results,” she said.

According to her, in the past, the EC waited for all 275 constituency results, but this time around it received 16 regional results, stressing that “this innovation introduced efficiency in the collation of results and enabled us to declare the results in a record 48 hours”.

IGP, AG sued over election 2020 injuries and loss of life http://34.58.148.58/igp-ag-sued-over-election-2020-injuries-and-loss-of-life/ Sun, 29 Aug 2021 08:51:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2007373 The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and Attorney General (AG) have been sued in two different matters by persons who suffered injuries and a family whose relative died during violence that marred the 2020 election.

The first suit is filed by lawyers of one Edmond Ayarek of Gyarko at Techiman. He described himself as the father of one Abdallah Ayarek who he says lost his life during the elections.

Mr Ayarek alleges his son was killed by a firearm discharged by security personnel on December 8 at the Techiman South Collation Centre.

He believes this contravenes his son’s right to life guaranteed under Ghana’s constitution. Other rights he argues have equally been violated included those requiring the state to respect and uphold the right to human life and human dignity with freedom from torture being a requirement.

He is, therefore, demanding that the state is ordered to investigate the killing as soon as possible and punish the perpetrators.

He is also asking for an amount of ¢10 million to be paid as compensation for the psychological trauma suffered by the family as a result of the death.

His written statement attached to the court documents recounts the events of December 8. He claims his son followed relative to the collation centre to observe the announcement of results.

Mr Ayarek said he later heard on radio that there was an incident of gunshot firing at the centre.

He was later informed that his son had been shot. He arrived at the Techiman Family Hospital where he had been asked to show up to receive the unfortunate news of the death.

He explained he has so far seen videos of the incident and believes it is quite obvious that the security personnel were shooting right into the defenseless and harmless crowd and not into the sky.

One of the videos, he alleges, captured his son who had been shot receiving help from the crowd.

ALSO READ:

He, therefore, believes the security personnel were unprofessional and harboured the premeditated agenda of killing. He concludes by pointing out that the Bono Region Security Council issued a statement pledging to investigate the matter and providing the necessary support for the affected families. This pledge, he alleges, has not been fulfilled.

The second writ is issued on behalf of Sulemana Ellison, Abubakr Iddirisu, Alhassan Nasiru, Aremeaw Alhassan, Alhassan Abdul Rahman and Paul Asue, all residents of Techiman.

All six persons claim they suffered gunshot injuries and other injuries on the 8th day of December 2020.

They believe this contravenes their right to life guaranteed under Ghana’s constitution. Other rights they argue have equally been violated include those requiring the state to respect and uphold the right to human life and human dignity with freedom from torture as a requirement.

They are, therefore, demanding that the state is ordered to investigate the matter as soon as possible and punish the perpetrators.

They are also asking for an amount of ¢5 million to be paid as compensation for the psychological trauma and injury suffered by Sulemana Eliasu who they say has been rendered physically challenged. The remaining five persons are asking for an amount of ¢2 million each.

A written statement attached to the court document recounts the events of December 8.

They alleged they heard gunshots followed by the word “fire” while they monitored the collation of votes at the Techiman Collation centre.

They further stated that while fleeing the scene, they were pursued viciously with the gunshots as though they were wild animals. The shooting spree, they explained, resulted in the various injuries suffered with two of the injured persons spending sums in the region of ¢26,000 on medical treatment.

They say they have so far seen videos of the incident and it’s quite obvious that the security personnel were shooting right into the defenseless and harmless crowd and not into the sky.

They, therefore, believe the security personnel were unprofessional and harboured the premeditated agenda of killing and injuring people.

They conclude by pointing out that the Bono Region Security Council issued a statement pledging to investigate the matter and providing the necessary support for the affected families. This pledge, they alleged, has not been fulfilled.

Election 2020: Families of casualties in Techiman South violence to get 4-bedroom house http://34.58.148.58/election-2020-families-of-casualties-in-techiman-south-violence-to-get-4-bedroom-house/ Tue, 15 Jun 2021 14:54:19 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1974271 Techiman South Member of Parliament (MP), Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah, says the families of two persons who died as a result of violence in the Techiman South Constituency during the 2020 general election are being given four-bedroom houses as compensation.

He says support has also been extended to those who got injured and their medical bills have been taken care of.

Apprentice Abdallah Ayarick, 18, and one Tajudeen Alhassan, lost their lives when security personnel fired shots to disperse a crowd that had gathered at the collation center on 8th December 2020.

Nine others were recorded to have sustained various degrees of injuries following the shooting.

Mr Korsah, who has been appointed as Deputy Minister for Local Government and Decentralisation-designate, disclosed details of the support in response to questions from MPs when he appeared before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Friday to be vetted for the position.

“The event as sad as it was has brought us together because of the pursuit of unity. I personally, on my own, as father of the constituency have taken some steps. You can’t bring back life lost. But (there is) some measure of support to the family and cushion for them,” he said in response to a question from Ejisu MP, John Kumah.

“As I speak in this room, that closer collaboration in search of unity, one young man who lost his life, Abdallah Ayaric, the parents are sitting behind me in support of my vetting. That is the unity we want to see at Techiman.

“There is another who lost his life, Tajudeen Alhassan. Like I said, (there is) some measure of support. We have decided to provide some shelter for the family because it was their wish and so a four-bedroom house is being put up to support the family. The same equivalent of support is being extended to the other family.

“Those who got injured, some of the hospital bills had to be taken to be sure they are back on their feet to go on with their lives… So almost all of them, we have close relationship with them and assisting them to get back…” Mr Korsah added.

Victoria Mensah, mother of 18-year-old Ayarick, who was present at the vetting to support Mr Korsah, said the family is counting on him to get them justice and compensation.

“We are counting on the MP to get the necessary compensation and justice from government for us. My son is the MP’s nephew. He has to work and ensure there is justice for the family.

“I am really saddened that we lost him. I knew he was going to be a great person for the family,” she told Joy News in an interview.

Mr Korsah condemned the violence, saying it shouldn’t have happened. He assured that there will justice. “I do accept and agree that unity is important but justice must go with that. We’ve petitioned various bodies.

“Some investigations conducted by the police are ready. We have lent some support to action taken by some friends in the Minority in Parliament. We regret what happened. It shouldn’t have happened. It was reckless,” he observed.

“We are very committed to ensuring there is justice for those who lost their lives and those who got injured,” Mr Korsah told the Appointments Committee.

Security is not our job but no lives must be lost in elections – EC Boss http://34.58.148.58/security-is-not-our-job-but-no-lives-must-be-lost-in-elections-ec-boss/ Tue, 18 May 2021 16:28:29 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1960893 The Electoral Commission (EC), has said it cannot be blamed for the violence that resulted in the death of some persons in the 2020 elections.

The EC has been massively criticized for supervising an election that led to the death of some five persons with others seriously injured.

But to the Chairperson, Jean Mensa said even though they believe lives must not be lost during elections, security was not part of their job.

Madam Mensa made the remarks at an IPAC review workshop on the 2020 polls, on Tuesday, May 18, 2021.

“An exceedingly disturbing challenge is the violence which led to the death of citizens of our country. And, we say never again. Never again should we go to an election and have anybody lose their lives. Here also, there is a tendency for fingers to be pointed at the EC when security is not the core mandate of the EC.

ALSO READ:

“I have read the constitution and security is not part of our core mandate. I use this occasion to clarify that the EC is not responsible for election security, although the entire election and its success rest on the shoulders of the Commission. Our mandate as entrenched in the Constitution does not include security,” she said.

She urged the police to speed up investigations into the killings to deliver justice to the affected.

“I take this opportunity to call upon the Police Service and the National Elections Task Force to speed up their investigations and bring the culprits to book.

“The families of the victims, the citizens of Ghana, and the international community are waiting for justice to be done,” she appealed.

According to the Social Commentator, the Akufo-Addo-led government’s interventions in the country have been unmatched and deserved a second term, hence his approach.

He said even in his own house, he endorsed President Nana Akufo-Addo as someone who was interested in Ghana’s future.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Uncle Allotey noted the outcome of the election was not surprising.

“Nana might have his own internal and external enemies but he became so convincing at a point and the votes in the presidential election make it obvious Ghanaians believed in him. I am not saying these because I have benefitted from any contract but these are facts and if you analyse critically, you will know,” he said.

Resolve electoral issues amicably – Nana Fitz tells NPP, NDC http://34.58.148.58/resolve-electoral-issues-amicably-nana-fitz-tells-npp-ndc/ Tue, 12 Jan 2021 16:15:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1904020 A leading sports administrator, Nana Fitzgerald Barkers Woode (Nana Fitz), has called on the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), to find an amicable way of resolving their differences after the 2020 elections.

He said the intense rivalry for power that has reared its head after the elections should quickly be tackled and resolved with expert dispute resolution skills instead of the uncharted waters both parties are attempting to take.

Nana Fitz made the call in an interview with the Daily Graphic.

“I have experienced many regimes, right from the days of Dr Kwame Nkrumah. In those days, we witnessed a lot of political dirty fighting and intense rivalry among burgeoning political parties, but I can say with conviction that what we saw in Parliament recently looked more dangerous,” he said.

He expressed regret about the politics of insults and the use of unprintable words by representatives of political parties during radio and television discussions, press releases, saying the practice should be nipped in the bud.

Nana Fitz said the politics of mistrust and insults had the potential to escalate, for which reason Ghanaians had the responsibility to call for peace between the two leading parties to quickly manage the situation, instead of leaving it to the parties to struggle with it.

“Should something happen right now, about 85 per cent of us, including children, women, the aged and the sick, may not have the means to travel or leave the country. And where will we go in these COVID-19 days, any way?” he asked.

“In Ghana, we love peace; however, it is unfortunate things are not looking good,” he added.

ALSO READ:

Nana Fitz stressed the need for Ghanaians to continue to pride themselves in having strong governance and legal institutions capable of resolving any political dispute on the continent.

The veteran football administrator said since 1990, contested elections had become a regular fixture of the political systems of sub-Saharan Africa.

However, he said, lessons could be drawn from them, both for democracy and for best electoral practices.

“In Ghana, we were fortunate our strong belief in the legal system was called upon which reliably resolved the 2012 election dispute.

“But that reminded Ghanaians that political power is transient and political parties know for sure that four years is not very far away and, therefore, patience is required,” he said.

President Akufo-Addo has lauded ex-President Mahama’s decision to challenge the 2020 election results at the Supreme Court.

To Akufo-Addo, it is the best option for any aggrieved person who has the interest of Ghana at heart should take.

“I recognise that my main opponent in the election Former President John Dramani Mahama has gone to the Supreme Court to seek intervention and be granted reliefs that he believes were compromised in the conduct of the elections. It is good for the nation that in the end, he chose the legal path instead of the pocket of violence,” he said.

It is part of the Caucus’ series of transparent engagements on its fundamental concerns about what it deems a flawed December 7, 2020, presidential and parliamentary elections on Wednesday, 30 December 2020.

The group, led by Minority leader, Haruna Iddrisu and Second Deputy Speaker, Alban S.K. Bagbin, presented evidence and justified why the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has decided to challenge the presidential election results and the parliamentary declarations in Techiman South and Sefwi Wiawso.

The Minority also highlighted the “grave human rights violations”, which, according to its calculations, led to the killing of seven Ghanaians and left many with life-changing injuries.

“We shall continue with our series of legitimate engagements in the spirit of democratic accountability, resisting subversion of the people’s will and preserving the pillars of the Fourth Republic birthed by our political tradition”, the Minority said.

The Caucus emphasised that the engagements shall proceed without prejudice to the petition filed at the country’s apex court by former President John Mahama.

Election 2020 : Mac Manu drops bombshell http://34.58.148.58/election-2020-mac-manu-drops-bombshell/ Thu, 31 Dec 2020 08:51:32 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1899748 The Campaign Chairman for New Patriotic Party (NPP), says one of the party’s objectives heading into the election petition is to prove that NDC’s John Mahama did not obtain the total number of votes he was credited with.

Peter Mac Manu said NPP’s legal team, led by former President of the Greater Accra Ghana Bar Association, Frank Davies, are adequately prepared to prove the party’s assertion.

“We believe, and will prove in Supreme Court that even John Mahama did not receive the number of votes that have been credited to him.

“We’re going to show that during the course of the trial,” he told Joy News’ Emefa Apawu.

The presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress had earlier Wednesday filed a petition to challenge the Presidential results of the December 7 general elections as declared by the Electoral Commission (EC).

The decision follows two weeks of sustained nationwide street protests by several groups of party supporters and sympathisers.

But Mr. Mac Manu maintains the NPP legal team of of between 10 to 12 lawyers is adequately prepared and ready to face the opposition party at the Supreme Court.

“My team of lawyers are already dissecting the NDC’s petition, and are also assembling their own documents,” he said.

Mahama’s grounds for election petition drastic shift from initial stance – Samson Lardy http://34.58.148.58/mahamas-grounds-for-election-petition-drastic-shift-from-initial-stance-samson-lardy/ Thu, 31 Dec 2020 08:48:24 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1899772 Lawyer, Samson Lardi Anyenini has described the change in arguments made by the flagbearer of the NDC prior to submitting his election petition at the Supreme Court today as a “dramatic shift”.

Following the National Democratic Congress’ unwillingness to accept the results of the elections as declared by the Electoral Commission on December 10, the NDC submitted their election petition to the Supreme Court today, December 30.

Prior to the submission, the NDC had claimed that their candidate, former President Mahama had won the elections and as such should be declared president-elect.

However, going by his petition today, Mr Mahama states that neither candidate won the election but rather, the votes obtained by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, President Nana Akufo-Addo and himself in the December 7, election as declared by the EC Chair were not enough to declare the winner.

“The claim that percentage of votes obtained by the 2nd Respondent [Nana Akufo-Addo] was 51.595% [6,730,413] of the total valid votes that she distinctly stated to have been 13,434,574 was a manifest error, as votes cast for 2nd Respondent would amount to 50.098% and not the 51.595% erroneously declared.”

ALSO READ:

Commenting on the former President’s address at a press conference this evening, Lawyer Samson Anyenini indicated that owing to the fact that the details of the petition will be subjected to the scrutiny of the highest order by the Apex Court, it was essential that former President Mahama present a case that will survive superior argument.

Speaking to Israel Laryea on Joy News Prime, Mr Anyenini stated: “They’ve been talking about some of the evidence they have. They talk about [vote] padding and so on and so forth. That is their story and at this time, it is still their story. It will now go through the mill. It will be tested; tested in cross-examination tested in superior argument.

“If their evidence and argumentations survive the test of judicial scrutiny, then they will win. But if the opponents bring a superior argument it is also possible that they will not win”.

He continued: “We have heard words like ‘stolen verdict’, we have heard expressions like fictionalized and fraud those may not sit within the present suit, but when you hear claims that by the NDC’s own computation, [former] president Mahama had secured a win and that he ought to have been declared a winner.

“Then you read the petition and it says President Mahama did not win, Akuffo-Addo did not win because neither made nor crossed the threshold of more than 50% of total valid votes therefore there ought to be a runoff. That is a dramatic shift from what you see in the court.”

NDC to start its Election 2020 petition on Wednesday, Dec. 30 http://34.58.148.58/ndc-to-start-its-election-2020-petition-on-wednesday-dec-30/ Sat, 26 Dec 2020 12:36:32 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1898621 The National Democratic Congress (NDC) says it will start its legal challenge of the results of the December 7, election on Wednesday, December 30.

The date is the last day of the mandated 21-days given under electoral laws for any aggrieved party in the election to file a legal challenge of the process.

A member of the opposition party’s legal team, Rockson Nelson Defeamekpor told host of Newsfile, Samson Lardy Anyenini that the party will be challenging both the presidential and parliamentary elections.

“We’ll go to court. We’ve made that clear… Certainly, by Wednesday, all these matters would be placed before the court,” he said on Saturday.

Mr Dafeamekpor also noted that the Electoral Commission on several occasions flouted the laws governing the conduct of elections.

MORE:

This, according to him, is what motivates the NDC to seek legal redress to ensure that the acceptable ways of conducting Ghana’s electoral process are adhered to.

“If the EC will be willing to comply with the law that will end the matter. It is not about declaring the seat in our [NDC] favour, that is not what we’re saying.

“We’re saying [EC should] comply with the law. If you comply with the law and we emerge victorious that is fine. But you do not comply with the law and announce another candidate as the victor. No.” he stressed.

For nearly two weeks, supporters and sympathisers of the NDC have organised numerous street protests following the declaration of Nana Akufo-Addo as President-elect in the just-ended polls.

NDC presidential candidate, John Mahama described the EC’s verdict as fictionalised to favour the governing New Patriotic Party.

His position has since been backed strongly by NDC supporters who have hit the streets to demand that the announcement be overturned.

Mac-Manu to be summoned! http://34.58.148.58/mac-manu-to-be-summoned/ Thu, 24 Dec 2020 18:42:28 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1898284

The Campaign Manager for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Peter Mac Manu has revealed that he will soon be summoned before the party’s Review Committee.

This is for him to answer questions on the performance of the party in the just-ended polls.

Mr Mac Manu who was speaking to JoyNews’ Kwesi Parker-Wilson noted that following the unexpected turnouts of results, particularly, in the parliamentary elections, the Review Committee needs to evaluate the circumstances leading to the results.

According to the Campaign Manager, although he is unsure when he will be asked to appear before the Committee, he is certain he would be invited soon.

“We have a review committee in place, headed by Nana Osafo Maafo with veteran politicians like Paapa Owusu Ankomah, Fred Oware, Elizabeth Ohene amongst others on board.

“They have called my assistant so eventually they will call me. I do not know when but I know that they will eventually call me,” he said.

This comes after at least 33 incumbent NPP MPs lost their seats in the just-ended elections. About 21 of them are either ministers of state or deputy ministers.

ALSO READ:

Aside from the 33 MPs who lost their seats, a total of 41 incumbent MPs who lost the NPP primaries earlier this year and thus did not contest in Monday’s polls.

Meanwhile, four NPP MPs are retiring.

In total, the governing party will lose at least 78 legislators out of their 169 in the next Parliament. That means about 50% of all NPP MPs are not returning.

But reacting to this information, Mr Mac Manu attributed the parliamentary casualties NPP suffered in the just-ended polls to behavioural change amongst certain MPs after winning the seat in 2016.

In his view, some lawmakers after winning the parliamentary elections lost touch with the electorates, therefore, the his outfit cannot be fully blamed for the abysmal performance of the party if the MPs who are representatives of the people failed to establish good relationship with their constituents.

“Many things go into parliamentary elections. In our case, parliamentary candidates were not able to convince voters enough to attract their votes. Campaign is your ability to give and send messages directly to the voter which should touch their hearts for them to vote for you.

“So you cannot blame the Campaign Director solely for the failure of an MP to fail to retain his/her seat. This is because the way you behave in your community among others can cause your people to say ‘they do not like you’ because of the behavioural changes you exhibit after winning the elections,” he explained.

NDC was believing a miracle in election 2020 but …- Sammi Awuku http://34.58.148.58/ndc-was-believing-a-miracle-in-election-2020-but-sammi-awuku/ Wed, 23 Dec 2020 16:09:54 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1897455 The National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has bemoaned the continuous protest of the opposition over the 2020 election results.

According to Sammi Awuku, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) went into the election with a strategy of believing a miracle in its favour.

However, there was no way that would have become possible due to the fact that they were contesting against the NPP which is a formidable party.

“They were believing with all odds against them, they were going to win the election but not against a formidable party like the NPP who has a hardworking leader and executives. The President was working around the clock; left for the office at 9:am and came back home after midnight,” he stated.

RELATED:

He said this on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen while reacting to the nationwide protests by the NDC since the declaration of President Nana Akufo-Addo as the winner of the Decmber 7 presidential elections.

To Mr. Awuku, all parties involved in the contest relied on and trusted the Electoral Commission to deliver a verdict that reflects the election and that was what happened.

He noted there was no way the numerous protests from the opposition will go against the incumbent government.

“I don’t see their protests as a tainted victory on the NPP but irreparable damage on the NDC brand. They keep saying they have won but haven’t come out with any figure,” he added.

This comes on the back of what the former President describes as the Council’s recognition of the NDC’s protests against the 2020 election results.

The Council in a statement noted the rights to peaceful demonstrations by aggrieved parties to the electoral dispute must be upheld and protected by the security agencies, especially without any hindrances.

The Council among other things urged the aggrieved parties to be responsible while exercising their constitutional rights, stating they must demonstrate peacefully.

“In this same vein, we will encourage the losing parties to strongly consider the constitutional option of proceeding to the Supreme Court,” parts of the statement added.

Meanwhile, Mr Mahama took to his Facebook page and wrote: “I commend the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC) for the recognition of protests as an instrument of democratic expression.”

He added: “Elections can be emotive and the EC’s incompetent handling of the Dec 7 poll leaves a sour taste in the mouths of all patriotic citizens. However, he urged all who feel outraged by the EC’s conduct to manifest their displeasure in a manner that is peaceful.

Election 2020: Killings have soiled Ghana’s democracy – Prof Kwasi Prempeh http://34.58.148.58/election-2020-killings-have-soiled-ghanas-democracy-prof-kwasi-prempeh/ Sat, 19 Dec 2020 22:40:36 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1896312 Executive Director of Ghana Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) has condemned the isolated cases of violence which were recorded during the recent general election.

Prof Henry Kwasi Prempeh stated that the killings and chaos in some areas are “a blot on our otherwise peaceful election and democracy.

“When you look at the scenes [of violence that occurred at Techiman South], it’s almost like a soccer match, it doesn’t look like a place where collation is happening or where voting has taken place.

“It looked like the aftermath of a soccer match where either the winning or losing side basically has turned,” he said.

This comes after some six people died after they were shot at various constituencies during the 2020 elections when the process went haywire.

MORE:

Speaking to Samson Lardy Anyenini, host of Newsfile, Saturday, he condemned shootings at collation centres by security operatives.

According to him, research by CDD-Ghana, prior to the election, revealed that people were comfortable with security presence because they believe they will “provide them safety and protection.”

He described the security officials, who acted unprofessionally by shooting at the people in some cases, as “clearly over-weaponised”.

“The security service may have overreacted in the use of force leading to this number of deaths,” Prof Prempeh stated.

Professor Prempeh suggested that the organisation and space for collation of electoral results must be must be improved.

In his view, the number of people allowed close to the centre must be checked to prevent a disproportionate amount of weaponised security.

Election 2020: NDC is being unreasonably greedy – Afenyo-Markin http://34.58.148.58/election-2020-ndc-is-being-unreasonably-greedy-afenyo-markin/ Sat, 19 Dec 2020 22:31:20 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1896304 The Effutu Member of Parliament (MP) says the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is being unreasonably greedy following the results of the 2020 general election.

Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin said the actions of the opposition party is not surprising because prior to the December polls, the party declared it will oppose the results of the elections.

“Your party is being unreasonably greedy in the way you are approaching matters before and after the elections. Before the elections, you made it loudly clear that you were not going to accept the results,” he told Sammy Gyamfi, the Communications Officer of the NDC.

MORE:

Ahead of the elections, the flagbearer of the NDC, John Mahama, said the party will not accept the results of the 2020 general election should it deem the process as unfair.

Mr Mahama, who promised the party was committed to a peaceful electoral process, said: “Let nobody assume that we will accept the results of a flawed election.”

However, Mr Afenyo-Markin, reacting to the cases of electoral violence, accused the NDC of inciting its supporters to indulge in violent protests.

“You started inciting your people to protest in violence. At Techiman South when the results were going to be declared, your parliamentary candidate physically prevented the Returning Officer from declaring the results.

“And they went on the radio that people should move to the collation centre and your people moved in there trying to create a chaotic situation,” the MP said.

He advised the party to demonstrate a level of political maturity and desist from causing mayhem in the country.

James Agalga noted that “the police cannot investigate themselves in a matter like this.”

“I think an independent body should be charged to do this investigation, set up by either the President or Parliament.”

He told Evans Mensah on Joy FM’s ‘Top Story’ Friday that, the disproportionate use of force against unarmed civilians by police and military officers is problematic.

Mr Algaga was emphatic that Inspector-General of Police (IGP), James Boanuh, has employed delay tactics in addressing the nation on the role of the police in the electoral violence.

“The IGP has failed the country. The National Election Security Task Force has failed us.

“Those civilians were in full retreat after the police fired warning shots. On what basis did they target at them and fired large ammunitions?” he quizzed.

According to him, he was shocked at the turn out of events in the just-ended polls.

Though the Kpone-Katamanso constituency is the stronghold of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Adorye was confident of a landslide victory for the NPP.

Reacting to his defeat on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Mr Adorye was optimistic he did a good work on the ground and could not fathom why he lost.

However, he indicated that will not deter him from realising his political ambition.

According to him, the results of this year’s election was shocking as compared to elections of previous years.

“This year’s election was shocking to everyone; even I will say that the region was lucky to have won one parliamentary seat which was the Binduri constituency, unlike Upper West Region where none was won.

“So if one looks at the development of this year’s elections, one will say that it surprises everyone and not only the Upper East Region,” he said.

The Regional Chairman said that he and his entire family worked with various constituencies to ensure that the party comes to power.

Their demand stems from what they described as infractions and errors that marred the just-ended 2020 general election.

Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the NDC, Ade Coker, disclosed this when irate party supporters stormed the EC’s headquarters again on Thursday, December 17, 2020.

Though Mr Coker described the protest as a peaceful one, supporters were seen burning tyres at the premises as they clash with police personnel.

They were chanting no Mahama no peace as they were clad in red and black attires wielding placards with various inscriptions.

The scene turned chaotic as policemen had to block access routes with barricades and disperse the crowd with water cannons.

However, Mr Coker explains they meant no harm as they were only going to present a petition to demand Mrs Mensa’s resignation.

Thursday’s protest follows similar events held nationwide since the EC boss declared President Nana Akufo-Addo as the winner of the December 7, 2020, election.

According to John Boadu, he cannot fathom why the party will make such claims when the NPP has 137 seats and the NDC has 136 seats per results certified by the Electoral Commission (EC) so far.

General Secretary of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, addressing a press conference, indicated they were leading with majority seats in Ghana’s eighth parliament.

This, he said, has propelled its readiness to choose the next Speaker of Parliament and the First Deputy Speaker as well as the leadership of the various select and standing committees of the House.

Reacting to the statement on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Mr Boadu stated that will never happen.

“They (NDC) are not even interested in the presidential seat but are ready to elect a Speaker of Parliament, majority leaders and others? That will not happen today or tomorrow because they cannot claim the majority when we are leading,” he said amid laughter.

He noted the NPP is going to win some five seats declared in favour of the NDC as well as the outstanding Sene West result yet to be declared.

Commenting on the NDC’s decision to challenge the results of the election, he added it will take magic for the party to overturn it.

Mahama states condition to concede defeat http://34.58.148.58/mahama-states-condition-to-concede-defeat/ Tue, 15 Dec 2020 16:42:30 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1894291 Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, has expressed readiness to concede defeat in the 2020 general election.

However, the former President said it will take an independent audit of the results and the Electoral Commission’s (EC) systems.

Mr Mahama disclosed this in an interview on Voice of America, stressing that is the only way the matter can be set to rest.

“If an independent audit is done on the EC’s results and the outcome proves that I lost the elections, I will accept it and walk away as done in the past.

“But as long as an independent audit is not done and knowing that there was a deliberate attempt to subvert the will of voters by the government and the EC, it will be wrong on my part to let it go,” he said.

This is because he says the EC demonstrated what he described as “gross incompetence” in running the general election with regards to the collation of results.

Due to the confusion over the 2020 elections, some National Democratic Congress supporters have hit the street to demand accountability.

This constitutional right, the GPS says, must be exercised in accordance with guidelines such as notifying police not less than five days before the assembly.

The GPS, in a press release, thus, admonished protesters to give due regard to the laws of the country, else will face the full might of the law.

Constitution permits EC to alter election verdict – Ben Abdallah http://34.58.148.58/constitution-permits-ec-to-alter-election-verdict-ben-abdallah/ Tue, 15 Dec 2020 11:46:15 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1893960 The Member of Parliament (MP) for the Offinso North Constituency says the Constitution of Ghana permits the Electoral Commission (EC) to alter an election verdict if need be.

Speaking to JoyNews, Ben Abdallah Banda dismissed claims that it’s unlawful for the EC to amend election results.

“We are all working with C.I.127 which says that declaration must be done by the Chairperson of the EC but it doesn’t forbid the EC if she has honestly detected an error and comes back to correct it.”

But, the outgoing MP for Keta, Richard Quashigah, said: “If a result was announced and then you [EC] come back to talk about corrections, I don’t think our laws permit that. This abysmal behaviour that has been exhibited undermines the whole process.”

However, Mr Abdallah was insistent that the correction, in any case, does not detract from the fact that the President-elect has won more than 50+1 votes.

“Nevertheless, if the losing party is having doubt in the EC’s declaration, they should channel their concerns with evidence to court,” he added.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Offinso South Constituency in the Ashanti Region is convinced the party will win disputed seats, hence his stance.

At the end of the December 7, 2020 polls, out of the 275 constituencies, 137 seats have been declared in favour of the NPP, with 136 others secured by the National Democratic Congress (NDC), while Independent Candidate, Lawyer Andrew Asiamah Asamoah has 1 seat.

He made the revelation in an interview on Accra-based Onua TV.

“The moment the independent MP joins another, it ceases to become a hung Parliament even if the two main parties have the same number,” he said.

He added: “If the NDC had the majority seats, they would have elected the Speaker, and Deputy Speakers and they can lead in various committees in Parliament but as it stands now, that is not the case.”

Founder and Apostle General of Royal House Chapel International, Most Rev. Sam Korankye Ankrah, has urged President Nana Akufo-Addo to call former President John Mahama.

According to the renowned man of God, though it is mostly the person in opposition that calls, it is right for President Akufo-Addo to reach out to the former President for peace to prevail in Ghana.

“I want his Excellency Nana Akufo-Addo to call John Mahama. Though I know it’s the one in opposition who has to call, he’s the father of the nation so I want him to stretch a hand of peace to his opponent. He should tell John Mahama that this thing is not a fight so let peace prevail,” he urged.

The Apostle General made the call during a church service on Sunday, December 13, 2020.

He went on to urge the President to appoint members of the opposition in the new government which he believes will help cure the winner-takes-all politics in Ghana.

His call follows the resistance on the part of the National Democratic Congress to accept the verdict of the fiercely contested December 7 election.

To him, he does not think any member of the NDC he described as ‘serious’ will doubt the flagbearer, John Mahama’s defeat.

Mr Mahama has described the outcome of the December 7 election as a “stolen verdict”, adding the Electoral Commission’s (EC) declaration was fictionalised.

Addressing a press conference on Thursday, Mr Mahama reiterated the party’s stance to reject what they said was a flawed process.

However, in a post on social media, Mr Otchere-Darko said the claims were an agenda to build the Mahama brand for the 2024 general election.

The Member of Parliament for Tamale Central has, for days now, come under a lot of pressure after urging the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress to undertake a parallel government over the outcome of the 2020 election.

Mr Fuseini recommended this ‘parallel government’ approach, stating that it would serve as a catalyst for power returning to the party.

However, speaking on Prime Morning on Joy Prime, he said that the position was his personal view and does not reflect the party’s next line of action.

“Though I made certain comments which many have described as outrageous, it doesn’t mean the NDC will go that way and President Mahama will not do that.

RELATED:

“We are going to court on the election because we cannot accept the results of a flawed election,” he said.

To Mr Inusah, the outcome of the results was supposed to tally with the number of voters, adding the Electoral Commission (EC) was trusted to declare credible results.

He indicated the NDC was convinced Mr Mahama won the election and will do everything possible to prove that.

The NDC and former President John Mahama have expressed their unwillingness to accept the verdict of the 2020 general presidential election.

The NDC’s claim seems to been further fueled by the EC’s admission of some errors in the results.

According to them, the results declared by the Commission were fictitious and could not be accepted.

Leader and Founder of Alive Chapel International, Prophet Salifu Amoako, has urged the National Democratic Congress (NDC) not to contest 2020 Presidential election.

This is because he says the party’s defeat is preparing them for a much greater glory in the 2024 election.

“The NDC knew they were going to lose the election so there is no need for them to contest the results but instead they should be patient and give praise to God for the outcome,” he said.

From the EC’s collated results, President Akufo-Addo polled 6,730,413 which is 51.30% of the total votes cast nationwide on December 7.

His closest contender, John Mahama of the NDC also polled 6,214,889 which gives him 47.35% of the total votes cast.

However, the NDC has described the results as a flawed discredited election and therefore rejected the presidential result without any reservation.

The confidence level of some top politicians towards the 2020 election was so high that they were willing to put their positions on the line.

Notable among such vows were those made in the studios and website of Adom TV/FM and Adomonline.com respectively.

Anthony Kwaku Boahen

As far back as August 3, Deputy Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Kwaku Boahen, promised to resign if President Nana Akufo-Addo won the 2020 December polls.

“If Akufo-Addo wins the 2020 December polls, I will resign as the Deputy Communications Officer of the NDC, I will stop doing politics,” he stated categorically.

His statements were in relation to claims that President Nana Akufo-Addo had deliberately deployed soldiers to the strongholds of the NDC to discourage people in such areas from registering to vote in the 2020 December polls.

But, Mr Akufo-Addo was declared President-elect by the Electoral Commission, on Wednesday.

What happens to his position now?

Chairman Wontumi

“Winning 2020 elections and beyond is a movement and it’s stronger than apartheid,” is the assurance Chairman Wontumi gave the Ashanti Region electorates.

Prior to that, the Regional Chairman, four months to the elections, bragged that he was going to win all 47 parliamentary seats in the region lest he vacates his position.

The reason he may have made those promises are probably because the Ashanti Region has always been the stronghold of the NPP.

Contrary to his promises, however, the parliamentary elections saw his region garner 43 out of the 47 with the NDC retaining their two seats before snatching one more.

His vow can be found here:

Last but definitely not least is National Democratic Congress’ Nii Lante Vanderpuye who swore to hug his colleagues as he marches back to parliament come 2021.

That, he said, he will achieve after “beating, and beating massively” NPP candidate, Nii Lante Bannerman in the polls.

Revealing his level of confidence on Adom TV’s Sɛdɛa ɛteɛ nie, Mr Vanderpuye vowed he will hand over his seat if he wins by a margin less than 20,000 votes.

Indeed he won, but only by a margin of one-third of his estimate which was 7,213 votes.

His comments follow inaccurate reports attributed to him that suggested that the NDC being defeated in the 2020 elections was as a result of its decision to choose a lady as its Vice Presidential candidate.

The outfit disclosed this as part of its official statement on the December 7, 2020 voting exercise.

CODEO says it arrived at the conclusion with the use of Parallel Vote Tabulation (PTV) methodology.

“Given that the official result announced by the EC for each candidate falls within their respective PVT estimated confidence ranges, CODEO can confidently confirm that its PVT estimates are consistent with the official presidential election results,” parts of the report read.

This, they believe, should make contestants place confidence in the official results declared by the EC.

“We encourage any party or candidate with issues about the presidential results to peacefully resolve these through proper legal and procedural channels. CODEO appeals to Ghanaians to remain calm, law-abiding and allow the systems to work,” CODEO urged.

CODEO, among other things, also indicated that the two main parties – the National Democratic Congress and the New Patriotic Party had party agents at over 99% of polling stations during the election.
