Head of the Public Affairs Unit of the Ghana Police Service, Superintendent Juliana Obeng, confirmed the development at a press briefing.

The suspects have been identified as Francisca Boakye, 30, a student nurse from Konongo in the Ashanti Region, and Harriet Ansah, 31, from Jasikan in the Oti Region.

They were taken into custody following a complaint lodged by the children’s mother, a 40-year-old businesswoman, in September 2025.

The mother had reportedly observed that her two-year-old twins often appeared unusually drowsy and showed strange behavioural changes over time.

Her suspicions led to further checks, which uncovered a disturbing revelation, the nannies had allegedly been mixing an unknown sleep-inducing substance into the children’s milk without her consent.

“They claimed the substance made the children sleep for longer hours so they could focus on other household chores,” Superintendent Obeng explained during a media briefing.

Further investigations by the police revealed that Harriet Ansah confessed to the act and claimed she learned the practice from her colleague, Francisca Boakye.

Ansah is also alleged to have admitted to other abusive behaviours, including hitting the children on the head with fire and using derogatory names such as “chimpanzee” to address them.

The suspects, who had been employed by the complainant for the past eight months, were found in possession of two used sachets and four unused sachets of substances suspected to be linked to the alleged abuse. The police have since sent the items for forensic analysis.

Both suspects have been formally charged and remain in police custody pending their next court appearance on October 20, 2025.

The Greater Accra Regional Police Command has strongly condemned the incident, describing it as “inhumane and unacceptable.”

Superintendent Obeng also urged parents and guardians to be more cautious and vigilant in monitoring domestic workers, especially those responsible for children and other vulnerable individuals.

Police say further updates on the case will be shared as investigations progress.

This is in connection with the death of a 74-year-old British national living in Ghana.

According to the prosecution, the deceased, John Scott Hughes, had invited Ms Agbomadzi to meet him at American House and subsequently took her to Philipo’s Movie House, a popular location in East Legon, where he booked a room for them.

The prosecution’s account states that, Mr Hughes and Ms Agbomadzi, whom they described as his girlfriend, watched pornography together and engaged in a consensual sexual encounter.

During the activity, Mr Hughes reportedly became unconscious and collapsed on the floor, causing Ms Agbomadzi to panic.

She then rushed to the reception area to seek assistance and informed the staff about Hughes’ condition.

The Police were called, and Hughes was subsequently transported to Legon Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The complainant in the matter is the wife of the deceased.

On October 24, counsel for the accused person, John Baptist Ayedze prayed for bail for his client who has since been in police custody.

The prosecution led by Assistant State Attorney Frederick Adu Gyamfi did not oppose the bail application.

Presiding Judge, Lydia Osei Marfo then granted a bail of GHS100,000 with a surety.

In her closing remarks, she urged older men to be cautious of their sexual lives and not go for younger women who she intimated can be hazardous due to the age difference.

GRA shuts down event centre at East Legon [Video] http://34.58.148.58/gra-shuts-down-event-centre-at-east-legon-video/ Wed, 21 Sep 2022 12:35:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2164496 The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has closed down the DE ICON event centre located in East Legon for not registering to pay tax.

The swoop followed a tip-off to the management of GRA that the business was operating without registering with the Authority.

Members of the GRA’s Debt Management, Compliance and Enforcement team locked up the facility after the GRA verified that the business was not registered.

A Chief Revenue Officer with the Debt Management, Compliance and Enforcement team of the GRA, Nathaniel Tetteh disclosed that the owners of the centre were aware of the tax laws and had in their possession tax forms for over five months.

“Today, we have advised them to go and complete the registration process and that would warrant the opening of the facility for them to operate,” Mr Tetteh said.

He also warned businesses that do not tax to ensure that they registered and paid the appropriate taxes.

The GRA is currently conducting an extensive nationwide audit and “mystery shopping” across the country to ensure that businesses are tax compliant.

ECG busts DE ICON for illegal connection

It will be recalled that in August last month, officials of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) found that the DE ICON event centre was operating with an electricity meter bypass/illegal connection.

When officials of the ECG visited the place on Monday, August 8, 2022, they observed that security lights and other electricals were functioning, including air-conditioners and fridges among other items without authorization. The power plant at the centre was off, but the facility had no other secondary source of power.

According to the manager in charge of revenue protection and technical investigations of the ECG, Ing. Ishmael Oku, “a rough calculation of the power consumption of the facility is pegged at about GH¢40,000”.

He said the owners of the facility will be served with an illegal connection notice and an investigation will be carried out.

“The meter in the premises [also] has domestic billing, but it’s being used for commercial purposes. We would investigate this to establish how they came by this meter,” he added.

Meanwhile, the GRA has conducted a swoop exercise on two Chinese Companies for non-issuance of VAT Invoices to customers at Okaishie, Accra.

The two entities, Zengsi Investment Company and Hua Feng Trading Company deal in the wholesale of ladies’ and children’s footwear.

The exercise was led by GRA’s Accra Central Area Enforcement Manager, Mr Joseph Adjeikwe Annan.

According to Mr Lasu, the deceased, Lillian Dodjoe was someone he shared daily motivational messages with but did not receive any from her on Saturday, a situation he described as strange as all attempts to reach out also proved futile only to hear of her death.

Statements from the deceased’s husband, Prince Charles Dedjoe, suggested he was asleep when the incident occurred, adding that he was awoken by the screams of his wife.

The husband told the police that he suspects she slipped from the staircase and fell to the ground which led to her unfortunate demise.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem show, Mr Lasu claimed it took the husband more than six hours to reach out to the family.

“He claimed the incident occurred around 3:am and whatever being the case, he should have informed the family but waited till about 9:30am to inform my dad that her daughter had been rushed to Lister Hospital,” he said.

Mr Lasu explained his dad had to rush from Sogakope after he received the news only to arrive in Accra to be told she had been transferred to the Police Hospital.

She was in an abusive marriage,” says brother whose sister fell to her death at East Legon.

According to Hans Peter Lasu, though his sister was aware of her marital predicament, she was also concerned about issues regarding faith and society.

He explained that his late sister and husband met somewhere in the early 2000s and got married shortly.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem show, Mr Lasu, who is based in the United Kingdom, said he could not describe the pain over his sister’s demise.

“She had concerns that were not just easy to get up and walk out of the marriage with children and the fact that we are Christians.

“But my response was there is no doubt about our faith but it is about time you quit this marriage and she kept talking about procedures involved and if she had listened, this wouldn’t have happened,” he recounted amid tears.

As difficult as the situation is for the family, Mr Lasu urged it was important for people to take a cue from his sister’s incident.

Commenting on his relationship with the sister’s husband, he said they were not on very good terms.

“Her husband is quite a proud person so I try as much as possible to keep myself away. I met him once while in Ghana before I left for the United Kingdom and my sister came to visit somewhere in 2019.

“He called daily but never had the courtesy to talk to me or extend his regards,” he lamented.

The 43-year-old woman, identified as Lilian Dedjoe, met her death after allegedly slipping and falling off the stairs of her East Legon home.

Confirming the incident to Adom News, the Accra Regional Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Afia Tenge, said statements from the deceased’s husband suggested he was asleep when the incident occurred.

With the latest talk barely three weeks ago, Mr Lasu explained he urged his sister to quit the marriage against all odds.

“About three weeks ago, my dad called and asked that I reach out to my sister and console her so I did and in the course of the conversation, I asked how things were going but after her response, I advised she quits the marriage,” he added.

To him, there was no doubt her sister was suffering.

“She told me things had gone downhill since the last time she came to London and we had the divorce discussion.  She was aware she was being abused and it was time to move on.

The outstanding monies owed the Commission is contained in a 2017 audit report by the Auditor-General.

According to the 2017 report, 483 lessees/assignees owed ground rent totaling GHC 1.6 million for the period between December 1975 and December 2015.

The report revealed that lessees at East Legon owe GHC 251,344 for the period between 1975 and 2015, Airport residential assignees also owe GHC 380,851 from the year 1979 to 2015.

Assignees at South Legon also owe GHC 441,491 from the year 1981 to 2015. Other areas include East Legon Ambassadorial Area where lessees owe some Ghs 212,608 from 1988 to 2015 and Osu, Ghs 369,546 from 1987 to 2015.

READ ALSO:

The Auditor-General, in the report, stated that their interactions with the head of the Ground Rent Management Unit of the Commission indicated that the laxity in collection of the rent was due to the ignorance of the lessees of their rent obligations.

Chairman of the Committee, James Klutse Avedzi, during deliberations at the PAC sitting, expressed shock over the development and questioned why prime areas such as East Legon and Airport Residential Area owed the Commission such an amount of money.

Responding to the questions posed to him by the committee, the Executive Secretary at the Lands Commission, Sulemana Mahama, told the committee that his outfit is facing difficulties in collecting the debt owed it by assignees.

He, however, stated that the Commission is currently engaging the services of a consultant to assist them with the collection of the debts.

Ranking Member on the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament, Kofi Okyere-Agyekum, urged the Commission to privatise the collection of ground rents to generate the needed resources.

I was not beaten – Roads Minister http://34.58.148.58/not-beaten-roads-minister/ Tue, 29 Aug 2017 08:11:42 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=442071 The Minister for Roads and Highways has dismissed media reports he was beaten to pulp during a site inspection ahead of the construction of a tunnel to link Spintex Road to East Legon.
Rather, Hon. Kwesi Amoako Atta said he was heckled by workers of a company operating illegally on that parcel of land.
Three persons are currently in custody at the East Legon police station after they openly fought the Roads Minister.
The three who are workers of Atpage Limited and Ottis Equipment waged war against the Roads Minister after he demanded their businesses be relocated from the shoulders of the Tema motorway.
The workers who had parked their excavators vowed not to leave the place claim they illegally acquired the parcel of land.
This generated into a scuffle and the aggrieved workers revolted against Mr. Amoako Atta.
Reacting to the issue on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem Tuesday, the Roads Minister said the attack on him shows the “level of indiscipline in the country”.
He could not fathom why someone illegally occupying a government land will fight state authority doing the right thing.
“The indiscipline in this country if we don’t check it will affect the development of Ghana”. He bemoaned.
The Road Minister said he has issued a 2-week ultimatum to all companies and squatters along the stretch to relocate.
Hon. Amoako Atta added that his ministry is so far satisfied with progress of works and he is optimistic the contractor will deliver on time.
“I won’t allow few indiscipline people to stall the construction of the roads which will ease traffic in the area” he stated.
