The victims, made up of Cameroonian and Ivorian nationals, were allegedly deceived into travelling to Ghana with promises of high-paying jobs.

However, upon arrival, they were reportedly subjected to exploitative conditions under the pretext of network marketing.

Accra-based Citi News reported that the rescue operation was carried out in the early hours of Tuesday, October 7, 2025, after weeks of surveillance and intelligence gathering by the police.

The victims are currently in protective custody as investigations continue to track down those responsible and dismantle the criminal network behind the scheme.

Police sources reveal that preliminary investigations indicate the suspects used Qnet — a controversial online business platform — as a front to recruit and exploit unsuspecting individuals from other West African countries.

The CID has assured the public of “its commitment to intensifying the fight against human trafficking and transnational scam operations,” while urging Ghanaians to be wary of “fraudulent job offers, especially those requiring upfront payments or recruitment through unverified agents.”

Authorities added that efforts are ongoing “to locate and arrest key members of the criminal syndicate believed to be operating across several regions.”

He arrived at the CID Headquarters around 9:30 a.m. on Monday, October 6, 2025.

His appearance follows a directive from the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, who, on Friday, October 3, 2025, warned that Wontumi would be arrested if he failed to turn himself in, as charges against him had already been approved.

The case involves Akonta Mining Limited, a company linked to the NPP regional chairman, which is being investigated for alleged illegal mining activities.

According to Dr. Ayine, progress on the case had been delayed because key dockets were allegedly hidden during the previous administration.
