Catholic Bishops, Christian Council bemoan exclusion from National Education Forum http://34.58.148.58/catholic-bishops-christian-council-bemoan-exclusion-from-national-education-forum/ Tue, 18 Feb 2025 08:36:42 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2505640 The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC) and the Christian Council of Ghana (CCG) have expressed deep concern and disappointment over their exclusion from the upcoming National Education Forum, scheduled for February 18 and 19, 2025.

In a joint statement issued on Monday, February 17, the two prominent religious bodies criticized the government’s decision to leave them out of this critical national dialogue on education, despite their significant role in shaping Ghana’s educational landscape.

“While the list of invited national-level stakeholders includes some organizations associated with our two institutions, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference and the Christian Council as such were excluded from it,” the statement noted, calling the omission perplexing given their historical contributions to quality education in Ghana.

The GCBC and CCG, which have been at the forefront of education through their network of mission schools, argued that their exclusion undermines the collaborative spirit necessary for shaping effective and inclusive educational policies.

“Our exclusion from this vital forum undermines the collaborative spirit that is essential to the success of any educational policy or reform,” they stated.

Stressing the need for an all-encompassing dialogue, the religious leaders warned that sidelining key players in education could result in policies that do not reflect the values and aspirations of the Ghanaian people.

“The national discourse on education requires the involvement of all stakeholders, including religious bodies, educators, and parents, whose input can guide the formation of policies that align with the values, traditions, and aspirations of the people of Ghana,” the statement continued.

The GCBC and CCG called on the government, particularly the Ministry of Education, to reconsider its decision and ensure that all relevant bodies are part of the discussions.

“We believe that the absence of the GCBC and CCG at this forum is a disservice to the broader educational community and the ideals of inclusivity and shared responsibility in national development.”

Reiterating their commitment to Ghana’s education sector, the religious bodies stressed that achieving meaningful reform requires genuine consultation and partnership.

“It is our firm belief that only through genuine consultation and partnership can we achieve the holistic educational reform that Ghana so desperately needs.”

They assured their readiness to work with the government and other stakeholders to ensure that Ghana’s education system remains high-quality, inclusive, and aligned with the moral and spiritual values of the country.

“We stand ready to engage in constructive dialogue for the betterment of education in Ghana,” the statement concluded.

The press release was signed by Most Rev. Matthew K. Gyamfi, President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, and Rt. Rev. Dr. Hilliard Dela Dogbe, Chairman of the Christian Council of Ghana.

As of now, the Ministry of Education has yet to respond to the concerns raised by the GCBC and CCG, but the call for inclusion adds to the broader conversation about stakeholder participation in shaping Ghana’s educational policies.

Christian Council condemns chaos in Parliament during vetting http://34.58.148.58/christian-council-condemns-chaos-in-parliament-during-vetting/ Wed, 05 Feb 2025 07:13:07 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2500844 The Christian Council of Ghana (CCG) has condemned the chaos that erupted in Parliament during the vetting of ministerial nominees by the Appointments Committee on Thursday, January 30, which led to property damage and the suspension of proceedings.

A press statement copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra by the Christian Council expressed concern over the confrontations during the scheduled vetting of Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Foreign Affairs Minister-designate, and Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the Minister-designate for Health.

Earlier proceedings had progressed smoothly until Thursday’s incident halted the vetting process.

The statement said such negative actions not only undermined the rule of law and ethical governance principles but also fostered a negative mindset in the country’s political activities.

“We, therefore, strongly condemn the use of violent confrontations and agitations in our national political engagements and discourses, such as what happened in Parliament,” it said.

While acknowledging parliamentary privileges and immunities, the statement emphasized that those rights must be balanced with maintaining the dignity of public office.

It welcomed the “unqualified apology” issued by the Appointments Committee Chairman, Mr. Bernard Ahiafor, on Friday but warned against using “violent, unconstitutional, unethical, and illegitimate means” to resolve political impasses.

“What happened last Thursday at the Appointments Committee is once again highly regrettable and should not recur in Parliament, nor should it be seen in any sphere of our national politics and governance.”

The Council called on the Office of the Speaker and the Majority and Minority caucuses to sustain their commitment to consensus-building throughout the lifespan of the Ninth Parliament.

“The CCG wants to reiterate that nation-building is a collective responsibility for all countrymen and women,” the statement said.

The Council also urged the adoption of sustainable democratic practices and the proper stewardship of national resources to achieve the country’s desired development.

Christian Council demands immediate action over attack on Erastus Asare Donkor and his crew http://34.58.148.58/christian-council-demands-immediate-action-over-attack-on-erastus-asare-donkor-and-his-crew/ Thu, 31 Oct 2024 09:41:35 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2466503 The Christian Council has condemned the violent attack on JoyNews journalist Erastus Asare Donkor and his colleagues while they were on duty at Asumenya in the Amansie South District of the Ashanti Region.

The Council described the incident as unacceptable and demanded immediate action to bring the perpetrators to justice.

In a statement, the Council emphasized the pivotal role of journalists in uncovering the truth and holding individuals and institutions accountable.

“Such an attack not only endangers the lives of journalists but also threatens the public’s right to information and undermines the nation’s fight against illegal mining,” part of the statement read.

“Justice must be served to affirm the protection of journalists and reinforce Ghana’s commitment to upholding human rights and the rule of law,” the statement continued.

The Council also called on the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Minerals Commission (MC) to urgently assess the operations of the company involved, Edelmetallum Mining Resources Limited.

It added that, given the serious allegations of environmental harm, an immediate suspension of the company’s activities should be considered as a precautionary measure until the investigation is completed.

The Council also offered prayers for the speedy recovery of the victims, pledging unwavering support during this challenging time.

“As we continue to advocate for peace, justice, and responsible governance, the Christian Council of Ghana stands firmly with the media and all those who strive to bring light to issues affecting our society.

“We urge all stakeholders to join in the effort to protect journalists, defend press freedom, and uphold the values that promote a just and democratic society,” the statement concluded.

Christian Council lacks authority to control pastors – Bishop http://34.58.148.58/christian-council-lacks-authority-to-control-pastors-bishop-justifies-doom-prophesy-caution/ Sat, 31 Dec 2022 01:48:29 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2200751 Some prophets in Kumasi are calling for the regulation of emerging churches if Ghana wants to win the fight against prophecies which have the potential of causing fear and societal instability.

Their call follows a recent notice by the Police for churches to be guided in the communication of prophecies on 31st December.

Although some of the prophets support the directive, they believe if the Christian Council of Ghana is given authority to bring all churches under a single national umbrella, it could avert Police involvement in controlling the activities of churches.

December 31, as the last day of the year, is traditionally set aside by Christians in Ghana to appreciate God’s goodness during the year.

Aside the thanksgiving, prophecies have gained prominence during such services over the decades.

But the communication of these spiritual revelations has attracted a restriction by the Police to contain prophecies likely to cause fear and panic.

Founder and Leader of the New Jerusalem Chapel, Bishop John Yaw Adu, who is seen as the originator of 31st night prophecies, subscribes to the directive.

With over 50 years of experience in the prophetic work, he says the Christian Council of Ghana lacks absolute control over churches in the country.

“If all pastors were under the Christian Council of Ghana, they would have been controlled. But since its establishment, the association has few members which doesn’t represent all of us. The Constitution is partly to be blamed,” he said.

But would a restriction by the police suffice?

Overseer of the Peace Way Chapel, Prophet William Agbovi, is suggesting extensive Biblical training for emerging prophets and pastors.

“Christian Council should ensure ministers of God or prophets undergo training. So someone can not just wake up one day and say they’re prophets and begin to give prophecies anyhow. Personally, I underwent Bible School training for five years. So how I behave is different from some pastors,” he said.

Bishop John Adu is, however, advising prophets to apply wisdom when prophesying.

“An individual becomes worried when you tell their secret to the world. So the Police is only advising that we should be mindful when communicating such revelations. Pastors have to apply wisdom during such times,” he added.

Only a year after the implementation of the Police directive, some Ghanaians are divided over the outcomes.

“I believe it’s not the duty of the Police to control prophecies. There are a lot of issues they can invest their energies into,” a citizen said.

Another citizen argued that the directive has been beneficial because it has ensured that prophets are measured in their utterances.

“It helped, because the 31st night prophecies brought about unnecessary anxiety. Prophecies come bearing duties. If those you’re prophesying about don’t work towards them, then of what use is it?” another asked.

Cyril Fayose, has praised the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia for his cordial relations with practitioners of all religions in the country, despite being a strong member of the Muslim faith.

The General Secretary of the Council made this observation at the opening ceremony of the Ghana Youth Congress on Tuesday, 9 February.

The event was a precursor to an African Youth Congress to be organised by the All-Africa Conference of Churches (AACC). It is under the theme, ‘Ghana, My Home, My Future’.

According to him, the Vice President readily accepted the request after receiving the invitation for the programme.

“That shows his love for the Church as well, and for young people,” Dr Fayose noted.

Rev. Fayose indicated that Dr Bawumia’s beliefs are well-suited for the Congress, which is aimed at engaging Africa’s youth in general, especially Ghanaian youth to build up moral character.
