The Adentan Circuit Court on Monday sentenced a 35-year-old carpenter to 15 years imprisonment for robbing a woman of her iPhone 11 valued at GH¢3,500.

Kingsley Mawuli Kplende is said to have robbed Grace Dzre Lawal after threatening her with a pair of scissors.

Charged with robbery, Kplende pleaded guilty when he appeared before the court, presided over by Mrs Sedinam Awo Kwadam.

Kplende told the court: “My lady, I am guilty, tamper justice with mercy”, but the court convicted Kplende on his plea, and jailed him 15 years in hard labour.

The court further ordered that the retrieved phone be handed over to the complainant.

Prosecuting, Chief Inspector Anim Darko said the complainant was a student and resident of Lakeside Community 5, and the accused (now convict) was a resident of East Legon Hills, Accra.

The court heard that the complainant, who was also a part-time waitress, closed from work.

Chief Insp Darko said that on her way back home and on reaching Lakeside Community 4, Last Stop, she saw Kplende approaching her from behind.

The prosecution said when the convict got closer to the complainant, he pulled a pair of scissors on her and demanded her phone.

Chief Inspector Darko said in the process, the complainant became nervous, fell and got injured.

The court heard that Kplende snatched iPhone 11 from the victim and took to his heels.

According to the prosecution, the complainant raised the alarm and some Good Samaritans apprehended the convict.

Chief Insp Darko said whiles running away from the scene, Kplende threw the phone into a nearby bush.

The prosecution said convict and in his caution statement, admitted the offence.

The prosecution said when the convict got closer to the complainant, he pulled a pair of scissors on her and demanded her phone.

It said the complainant became nervous and fell and, in the process, the complainant got injured and the convict snatched her iPhone 11 and took to his heels.

According to the prosecutor, the complainant shouted for help and some people who were near the scene chased the convict and apprehended him.

The court was told that police intelligence disclosed that the convict while running away from the scene, threw the phone into a nearby bush.

The prosecution said Kplende during interrogation and in his caution statement, admitted the offence.

Christopher Kavi, charged with defilement, pleaded guilty.

Kavi was convicted on his plea and sentenced accordingly by the court housed at the Ghana Police Service headquarters.

Prosecution led by Detective Chief Inspector Opoku Aniagyei said the complainant was a trader and mother of the victim, aged 13.

Prosecution said Kavi, the complainant and the victim reside in the same vicinity at Ashalaja. The accused person is a friend to the complainant and the victim.

On December 19, 2023, the victim told her mother that she will be attending church service.

Prosecution said the complainant obliged the victim and asked that she took her younger brother along.

According to the prosecutor, while the victim was on her way to church, Kavi called the victim, saying he was sick, so the victim promised to visit him after church.

Prosecution said when the church was about to close, the victim left the church premises and went to Kavi’s house at about 8:30pm.

It said Kavi took the victim to his room and she sat on his bed because there was no chair in the room.

Prosecution said Kavi went to take his bath and came to lie on his bed while talking to the victim.

The prosecutor said while conversing with the victim Kavi slept off.

Prosecution said when Kavi woke up and found the victim in his room, he started kissing her and he had sex with the victim.

After the act, Prosecution said Kavi went to escort the victim to her house because it was late in the night.

Prosecution said the complainant and other family members who searching for the victim, met Kavi and the victim.

Kavi was apprehended by the complainant and her family members and sent him to Danchira Police Station.

On December 20, 2023, the Danchira Police sent Kavi to the Police at Weija Divisional Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) and a medical report was issued to the complainant to seek medical care for the victim.

When the medical report was fully endorsed by the Medical Doctor and after careful investigations, Kavi was charged.

He, therefore, entered the illegal structure of the carpenter erected near the Diplomat and Embassy hotel.

The carpenter, who was around the shop, allegedly splashed acid on him when he attempted to ease himself.

The carpenter reportedly chased him to the church premises while sprinkling the acid on him as the victim was screaming for help.

The suspect was arrested by the Church members and handed over to the police.

The victim, who suffered injuries on the elbow, waist and part of the neck, was rushed to the Eastern Regional Hospital.

Christian Ofor, a family member, told Starr News that they were shocked by the act of the suspect.

“The small boy was running because he didn’t know it was acid he was shouting fire fire fire. He run towards the church but the man was still pursuing him and they arrested him and reported to the police. They took the boy to the hospital. As you can see the scar on the face,” he narrated.

He said that though the victim has been treated and discharged, doctors say he needs Plastic surgery. He, therefore, appealed to philanthropists to help the family mobilize funds for the surgery.

The victim,vwho lost his mother in 2017, is currently staying with the father together with two other siblings in Koforidua.

The father, Timothy Nwaneli, a labourer, said he can’t afford the cost of plastic surgery, hence appealing for financial assistance.

She noted that on 26 February 2021, a male complainant reported at the Korle-Bu police station that “he went to his shop at Ayigbe Town where he displays coffins for sale.

“The carpenter found out that one of his coffins, white colour, valued at GH¢2,200.00, was stolen.”

According to her, the complainant, “acting on a tip-off, traced it to Korle Woko, Accra and realised that a fellow carpenter, George stole and sold it to a bereaved family for a burial ceremony.

“The Police proceeded to Korle Woko and found the coffin beside the deceased who was laid in state ready to be put into the coffin.

“The deceased’s family understood and returned the coffin to the complainant,” she further explained.

The suspect, George Amoah, has since been in custody, assisting in investigations.

A Police Lance Corporal, Henry Lamptey, popularly known as Chaka, stationed in Tepa in the Ashanti Region, has been captured in a video brutalizing a carpenter who is also domiciled in Tepa.

According to reports, the carpenter, Kwabena Boateng, was assaulted by the officer and two police assistants, for delaying in completing a task given him.

“The officer had contracted the carpenter to produce a piece of furniture for him. The carpenter explained that the type of wood the officer wanted to be used for the furniture was scarce and will delay in executing the job,” a journalist in Tepa, Munkaila Salifu reported.

“But the police officer thought that the carpenter was playing a fast one on him, especially, since he had made part payment, hence, he laid an ambush for him, together with two other officers and attacked the carpenter on a street in Tepa,” Salifu added.

The video shows a woman who attempted to intervene and rescue the carpenter being pushed by the officers.

The alleged assault comes just weeks after another police officer, Lance Corporal Fred Amanor, was also captured on video brutalising a 36-year-old grandmother who was holding her 2-month-old grandchild in the hall of the Shiashie branch of Midland Savings and Loans in Accra.

He was arrested and arraigned.

Eric Armah pleaded guilty.
However, after his explanation to the court, a plea of not guilty was entered on his behalf.
Armah told the court presided over by Mrs Abena Oppong Adjin Doku that one Raymond who is at large brought a bag to him in the house for safe-keeping and he did not know that the said bag contained arms. According to Armah, he was asked by Raymond to bring the bag to him at Ritz Junction at Adenta.
However, at Adenta, Armah said he heard gun shots and decided to hide. The accused said soon as he came out from his hideout he was pointed out by some people as being among some robbers at the place.
Prosecuting Chief Kwabena Adu narrated that the complainant was Comfort Owusu Boafo, manageress of a cold store who also operates a ECG pre-paid vending shop at Agbogba, Accra.
On December 6, this year, the complainant went to work with her two attendants namely Raymond Kuduegah and Beradon B. Bekoe.
At the about 7:00pm, same day after close of work, Raymond and Isaac, both accomplices who are at large, armed themselves with pump action gun and entered the complainant’s shop and took away the daily sales of GH¢ 2,420.
The police was informed of the robbery attack and they visited the scene and retrieved a motor bike with registration number M-15- GR 4069, one pump action gun, one cartridge and three rings belonging to Armah and his accomplices.
Prosecution said all the suspects however escaped from the scene on that day.
Prosecution said Police investigations revealed that Armah and Raymond went into hiding at Kasoa.
On December 11 this year at about 6:00pm, Prosecution said the Police had information that Armah and Raymond had in their possession a bag and was heading towards Ritz junction at Adenta with the said bag.
Armah was arrested but Raymond escaped when the bag was searched a single barrel gun and 13 AA cartridges were found in it.
