City booked their place at Wembley with a commanding 5-2 aggregate victory over Newcastle United, while Arsenal secured their spot after a 4-2 triumph over Chelsea.

The showpiece is scheduled for March 22 at Wembley Stadium, and for Semenyo—who joined City in the winter transfer window from AFC Bournemouth—the occasion marks a major milestone in his career.

The Ghana international admitted the significance of the fixture is beginning to sink in as he prepares for what he expects to be a demanding contest.

“It feels crazy, man. Honestly, I’ve never been in a final before,” Semenyo said while speaking at the Adidas Pred v F50: The Game event.

“I’m just pinching myself, obviously playing against Arsenal. It’s going to be a top final against a top team.

“These are the moments every footballer dreams of. I’m lucky to be living that reality,” he added.

Semenyo recently played a key role in City’s dramatic Premier League victory over Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday, a result that reduced the gap at the top of the table to six points.

The 24-year-old has made an immediate impact since his move to Manchester, scoring four goals across all competitions, and will be keen to maintain his scoring form when City host Fulham at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday night.

Arsenal beat Palace on penalties to set up Carabao Cup semi-final with Chelsea http://34.58.148.58/arsenal-beat-palace-on-penalties-to-set-up-carabao-cup-semi-final-with-chelsea/ Tue, 23 Dec 2025 18:45:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2613604 Arsenal will face Chelsea in a two-legged heavyweight Carabao Cup semi-final next month after edging past Crystal Palace 8-7 on penalties at the Emirates on Tuesday.

Mikel Arteta’s side could not find a way past inspired Palace goalkeeper Walter Benitez until Maxence Lacroix prodded into his own net on 80 minutes with the FA Cup holders failing to cope with a corner-kick.

But Oliver Glasner’s side unearthed an equaliser in five minutes of nine added to the contest when Marc Guehi swept home from close range after Jefferson Lerma had headed into the traffic from Adam Wharton’s set-piece delivery.

The first 15 penalties were perfect until Lacroix saw his effort halted by Kepa Arrizabalaga as the Arsenal keeper dived low to his right to the delight of the home fans.

The Bluebirds are the final team outside of the English top flight standing after they beat Welsh rivals Wrexham 2-1 in the Round of 16.

Chelsea survived a late Wolves fightback to record a 4-3 victory and remain in a competition that they have won five times.

Cardiff reached the final of the Carabao Cup in 2012, drawing 2-2 with Liverpool before falling to a 3-2 defeat on penalties.

Crystal Palace defeated The Reds in this year’s Round of 16 to set up a mouth-watering London derby against Arsenal.

The two sides went head-to-head at the same stage of the competition last year, with The Gunners battling to a hard-fought 3-2 victory.

Arsenal kept their hopes of winning the tournament alive by beating Brighton & Hove Albion 2-0 on Wednesday.

Holders Newcastle are also through, and they will continue the defence of their trophy with a home game against Fulham.

The Magpies beat Tottenham 2-0 on Wednesday night, while Fulham needed penalties to get past League One side Wycombe Wanderers.

Manchester City battled back from a goal down to beat Swansea, and they have been rewarded with a home tie against Brentford.

The Bees reached this stage of the competition after recording an emphatic 5-0 win over Grimsby Town, who eliminated Manchester United in a historic clash earlier this season.

The quarter-finals are set to be held on the week commencing December 15.

Newcastle hold off Liverpool to claim first major trophy since 1969 http://34.58.148.58/newcastle-hold-off-liverpool-to-claim-first-major-trophy-since-1969/ Sun, 16 Mar 2025 19:51:36 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2515332 Newcastle lifted their first major trophy since 1969 after beating Liverpool 2-1 in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley.

The Magpies dominated the Premier League leaders from start to finish, taking a 2-0 lead through a thunderous header from Dan Burn and a calm finish from Alexander Isak.

Federico Chiesa’s late goal gave Liverpool hope of an unlikely comeback in stoppage time, but Newcastle held on to win their first trophy since claiming the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1969.

The Carabao Cup triumph was also their first domestic trophy since they lifted the 1955 FA Cup.

The defeat capped a heartbreaking week for Arne Slot’s side.

They not only missed out on a first major trophy since the Dutchman’s arrival but were also eliminated from the UEFA Champions League by PSG.

Carabao Cup Final preview: Liverpool v Newcastle United http://34.58.148.58/carabao-cup-final-preview-liverpool-v-newcastle-united/ Fri, 14 Mar 2025 06:00:47 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2514664 Liverpool and Newcastle United will compete for the first piece of silverware on offer in the 2024-25 English football season, as they battle in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley on Sunday 16 March.

There is no better place to get your season-long ticket to the best football the world has to offer than DStv!

Liverpool, who are the reigning champions and have won the EFL League Cup a record 10 times, earned their place in the final with victories over West Ham United (5-1), Brighton & Hove Albion (3-2), Southampton (2-1) and Tottenham Hotspur (4-1 on aggregate).

Reds manager Arne Slot is looking forward to leading his team out at the iconic Wembley Stadium – long heralded as the spiritual ‘Home of Football’.

“It is special to go there as I know how iconic that stadium is,” said the Dutchman. ” [But] it’s only special if you can win things. We know how difficult that’s going to be as Newcastle are an impressive team.”

Slot won the Dutch Cup with Feyenoord last season, beating NEC 1-0 in the final. “It’s always nice to play a final,” he noted. “We come in every day, we try to improve the team. The players try so hard to improve themselves, but in the end it’s about reaching finals and winning things.”

Newcastle, meanwhile, are looking to win their first domestic trophy in 70 years (the FA Cup in 1954-55). They have never won the EFL League Cup, though they were runners-up as recently as 2022-23, losing in the final to Manchester United.

“It would mean the world to me to be the person to end the [trophy] wait but it would be not necessarily for me. It would be more, genuinely, for the supporters, for everyone connected with the club to embrace that moment if we were able to do it,” said Newcastle manager Eddie Howe.

“They’ve had a long wait for that moment and I know just from my dealings with people around the city, with people that I see, the love they have for the football club. I’d love to return that love with a trophy.”

The Magpies defeated Nottingham Forest (on penalties after a 1-1 draw), Wimbledon (1-0), Chelsea (2-0), Brentford (3-1) and Arsenal (4-0 on aggregate) to earn their place in the showpiece match at Wembley.

In head-to-head terms, Liverpool and Newcastle have met in 189 matches across all competitions since 1893. The Reds have claimed 94 wins compared to 50 for the Magpies, while 45 games have been drawn.

The teams met as recently as late February in a Premier League clash at Anfield, with Liverpool securing a comfortable 2-0 win thanks to goals from Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister.

It’s only special if you win things, says Slot http://34.58.148.58/its-only-special-if-you-win-things-says-slot/ Fri, 07 Feb 2025 08:07:56 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2501819 Liverpool manager Arne Slot was delighted to book his first place in an English final – but warned “it’s only special if you can win things”.

The Reds demolished Tottenham 4-0 in the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg to turn around a 1-0 first-leg deficit.

Liverpool, who won the cup last season under Jurgen Klopp, will face Newcastle in the Wembley final on Sunday, 16 March.

This is 46-year-old Dutchman Slot’s first season in English football, having moved from Feyenoord in the summer, and the first time he will have been to Wembley.

Citing the 1992 European Cup final, where Barcelona beat Sampdoria 1-0 at Wembley, he told BBC Radio 5 Live: “We all know as Dutch people how important Wembley was for Ronald Koeman and Barcelona and Johan Cruyff.

“It is special to go there as I know how iconic that stadium is.”

But he added: “It’s only special if you can win things. We know how difficult that’s going to be as Newcastle are an impressive team.”

Slot won the Dutch Cup with Feyenoord last season, beating NEC 1-0 in the final.

“It’s always nice to play a final,” he said.

“We come in every day, we try to improve the team. The players try so hard to improve themselves, but in the end it’s about reaching finals and winning things.”

And he added that it was probably his best night as Liverpool manager so far – in an impressive campaign to date in which he has won 29 of his 37 games in charge and only lost three.

“I think we had some big nights here already but to reach a final should also be special, and that is what it is,” he said.

“So in that perspective it has been the most special evening.”

EFL Cup often predates Premier League glory

With a six-point lead at the top of the Premier League and into the last 16 of the Champions League, Slot will be hoping success in the EFL Cup is just the start for his side this season.

He will be following several other managers in trying to use the competition as a springboard for further glory.

Of the 11 bosses to have won the Premier League title, four lifted the League Cup, as the competition was formerly known, before doing so – Alex Ferguson, Manuel Pellegrini, Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola.

For Mourinho and Guardiola in particular, it was not only their first trophy in the country but the beginning of a memorable period at the top of the English game.

On their 2005 League Cup win, Mourinho’s Chelsea captain John Terry said: “It set us on our way. It gave us a taste of what we wanted – more.

“A lot of people write this competition off but for me it is huge and we look back on that 2004-05 season… it had a huge impact on our confidence and momentum.”

In Mourinho’s own words: “If there is any secret, it’s to take it seriously.”

Just a few months after winning the League Cup for the first time, Mourinho – like Pellegrini and Guardiola at Manchester City – went on to win the league.

‘Could be a really, really special season’

Liverpool are favourites to win the Premier League, the Champions League and the EFL Cup – and not far off to win the FA Cup.

The Reds’ season has been remarkable, given a dip was thought to be inevitable when the legendary Klopp left.

The only time Klopp won multiple major trophies in a season was in 2021-22, when they won the FA Cup and EFL Cup.

“This could be a really, really special season for Liverpool,” said ex-Reds defender Jamie Carragher on Sky Sports.

“They’ve been in this situation at this stage of the season, with four trophies still available, I think twice in the past three or four years under Jurgen Klopp and they came away with two Carabao Cups and one FA Cup. They didn’t get the big ones.

“The most important thing is to win the big trophies, the Premier League and Champions League.”

Former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp added: “They’re in a fantastic position, everything is looking so good for them.

“Can they capitalise on it and do something unprecedented by winning four trophies? I think you’re never going to get a better chance.

“Liverpool right now are arguably the best team in the world. It’s almost beyond his wildest dreams.

“When he came here, following someone like Jurgen Klopp, he would’ve just been hoping it goes well. For him to do what he’s done is absolutely phenomenal. He’s been magnificent.”

Carabao Cup Semifinals: Newcastle host Arsenal as Liverpool clash with Tottenham http://34.58.148.58/carabao-cup-semifinals-newcastle-host-arsenal-as-liverpool-clash-with-tottenham/ Wed, 05 Feb 2025 06:01:08 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2500962 The identity of the two finalists for the Carabao Cup will be decided on the midweek of 5-6 February 2025, with Newcastle United and Arsenal, as well as Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur, meeting for the second leg of their semifinal ties.

There is no better place to get your season-long ticket to the best football the world has to offer than DStv!

First up on the evening of Wednesday 5 February is Newcastle United v Arsenal at St James Park. The Magpies enjoy a 2-0 lead from the first leg in London last month, with goals from Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon putting them in charge of the tie.

Yet Newcastle manager Eddie Howe insists it is only “half time” in the tie and has urged his team not to fall into the trap of complacency.

“It’s still very much game on and we’ve only done half the work,” Howe said. “These are big wins for us – hopefully that can help us in future games. We have to try and win at any ground and go into any game feeling that we are capable of doing that. When you’re in my shoes you have to be strategic and plan well.”

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta, meanwhile, has faith that his team can turn the semifinal around: “It’s just half-time. When I see the team play, and how we deal with a lot of situations and play against a very good team, I must say I have full belief that we can go out there and do it.”

On the evening of Thursday 6 February, Liverpool will look to harness the power of Anfield to make a comeback when they host Tottenham Hotspur. Spurs claimed a 1-0 home win in London last month, courtesy of a first goal for the club from young Swedish striker Lucas Bergvall.

“The good thing for us is that if you ever have to lose a game, it’s better that you lose one when there is still a second leg to be played,” said Liverpool manager Arne Slot.

“[It’s a] far from ideal starting position for us because they [Spurs] have a really good team, probably some players come back for the second leg. So, far from ideal to lose [the first leg] but if I ever have to lose, I prefer to lose if there’s still a leg to be played.”

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou, meanwhile, knows the danger Liverpool pose in the tie despite being behind: “Look, Liverpool don’t allow you to dominate the game the way other teams do, and our players every three days are playing a game of football, without rest, and you saw Liverpool at the end [of the first leg], they put on some significant talent, some really good footballers, some top footballers.

“I couldn’t do the same, and yet the guys who are out there are consistently doing it, so maybe we’re not as dominant as we want it to be, but there’s good reason, not through the lack of trying or different intent in terms of how we went about it.”

Arsenal booked their place in the last four with a thrilling 3-2 comeback win over Crystal Palace in the quarter-finals, underpinned by a surprise Gabriel Jesus hat-trick.

Liverpool had a similarly narrow win over Southampton in their tie, emerging 2-1 victors at St Mary’s, while Newcastle United were more comfortable in a 3-1 win against Brentford.

Tottenham Hotspur were the last team to make it with a 4-3 triumph over Manchester United.

EFL Cup: Jesus hat-trick helps Arsenal beat Palace to reach semis http://34.58.148.58/efl-cup-jesus-hat-trick-helps-arsenal-beat-palace-to-reach-semis/ Wed, 18 Dec 2024 22:19:07 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2485378 Gabriel Jesus scored his first home goals in a year as his hat-trick helped Arsenal come from behind to beat Crystal Palace and reach the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup.

Palace looked capable of pulling off a shock when they took the lead with their first shot of the match – Jean-Philippe Mateta getting the better of Jakub Kiwior to score the opener.

Mikel Arteta made eight changes from the side that started their goalless draw with Everton at the weekend, with Kieran Tierney making his first Arsenal appearance since the 2023 Community Shield, but the players who came in did not largely have the desired effect.

Arteta, sensing that the game was slipping away from Arsenal, introduced captain Martin Odegaard and William Saliba at half-time.

They looked a different team – Raheem Sterling hitting the bar from close range after Henderson saved his initial effort – before Odegaard slipped an inch-perfect pass to Jesus, who controlled excellently before chipping the ball over Henderson to level the match.

Jesus then got his second of the match when he was played into the box by second-half substitute Bukayo Saka and he fired low into the bottom corner.

The forward looked marginally offside when he reacted to get on the end of Saka’s pass but, with no VAR until the next round, the strike stood.

The Brazilian completed his hat-trick when he again was found by Odegaard and drilled his shot past Henderson to win the game.

There was time for former Arsenal player Eddie Nketiah to grab a consolation goal but Arsenal held firm to reach the last four.

Nunez scores as Liverpool sink Southampton cup hopes http://34.58.148.58/nunez-scores-as-liverpool-sink-southampton-cup-hopes/ Wed, 18 Dec 2024 22:15:48 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2485374 Darwin Nunez set Liverpool on the path to victory over Southampton as Arne Slot’s side reached the Carabao Cup semi-finals.

First-half strikes from Nunez and Harvey Elliott gave Liverpool firm control, although Cameron Archer pulled a goal back to give the hosts hope.

Southampton were led by interim manager Simon Rusk following the sacking of Russell Martin after Sunday’s 5-0 home defeat by Tottenham, and they started brightly but fell behind after 25 minutes.

Trent Alexander-Arnold did superbly to escape pressure from two Southampton attackers before finding Nunez with a through ball, albeit via a huge deflection off Jan Bednarek. The Uruguay international took advantage of Alex McCarthy’s slip to place his finish out of the goalkeeper’s reach.

Any hopes Southampton fans had that cup duty would distract from their struggles at the foot of the Premier League evaporated when Elliott doubled Liverpool’s lead eight minutes later.

The England Under-21 midfielder – making his first start of the season – sent a shot into the bottom left corner via a deflection after Cody Gakpo played him in on goal.

Slot – sitting in the stands while serving a one-game touchline ban – must have felt the game was going comfortably Liverpool’s way as the visitors withdrew Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez at half-time in favour of Konstantinos Tsimikas and Federico Chiesa.

Liverpool eased off and paid the price just before the hour mark when Archer collected the ball, ran half the length of the pitch virtually unchallenged and curled a stunning strike into the far corner of Caoimhin Kelleher’s goal.

Southampton grew in confidence but had Taylor Harwood-Bellis to thank for clearing Chiesa’s goal-bound effort, and while they fashioned a few promising attacks none of them led to an equaliser.

They wanted a penalty in the final minutes of injury time, but referee Simon Hooper judged Jarell Quansah did not drag down Mateus Fernandes when through on goal.

Last season’s cup winners join Arsenal and Newcastle in the semi-finals, as will one of Tottenham or Manchester United who face off in the final last-eight tie on Thursday (20:00 GMT).

Chelsea and Liverpool will contest this edition of the Carabao Cup, as the Blues look to win the competition for a sixth time (adding to previous triumphs in 1965, 1998, 2005, 2007 and 2015), while the Reds will chase a record-extending 10th title (adding to their nine triumphs in 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1995, 2001, 2003, 2012 and 2022).

Chelsea have beaten AFC Wimbledon (2-1 at home), Brighton & Hove Albion (1-0 at home), Blackburn Rovers (2-0 at home), Newcastle United (on penalties after a 1-1 draw at home) and Middlesbrough (7-1 on aggregate in a two-legged semifinal) to reach the final.

Liverpool’s path to Wembley has seen them overcome Leicester City (3-1 at home), Bournemouth (2-1 away), West Ham United (5-1 at home) and Fulham (3-2 on aggregate in a two-legged semifinal).

The Blues need to win this trophy to ease the pressure on manager Mauricio Pochettino and add some gloss to what has been a desperately poor season by their standards, while the Reds are chasing bigger honours but would love to have another trophy with which to send off boss Jurgen Klopp, who will be leaving the club at the end of the season.

“I am desperate to win a title here [in England],” said Pochettino, who was unable to do so in his spells in charge of Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur. “We won, in one year and a half in Paris [with PSG], three trophies. We want to win here, of course.”

Pochettino reached the 2015 Carabao Cup final during his first season in charge of Spurs but his side lost 2-0 to Chelsea, while they also lost the 2019 UEFA Champions League final to Liverpool.

“People need to believe and trust in us and we go to the final with the chance of winning the first trophy of the season.”

Klopp, meanwhile, is wary of Chelsea’s desire for revenge after his side beat the Blues in both the Carabao and FA Cup finals in 2022: “But we all know it’s Chelsea and they probably want to put history right after playing us twice two years ago. It’s just great.”

The Blues emphatically overturned a 1-0 first-leg deficit with a 6-1 victory against Championship side Middlesbrough at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday, winning 6-2 on aggregate.

They will play either Liverpool or Fulham at Wembley on 25 February – the first cup final Chelsea have reached since losing both the EFL Cup and FA Cup on penalties to Liverpool in 2022.

Pochettino, who is yet to lift a trophy in England, lost in the final of this competition to Chelsea in 2015 and the Champions League final to Liverpool in 2019 when manager of Tottenham.

“I’m desperate to win a title here,” said Pochettino, who won the first trophies of his managerial career at Paris St-Germain after being sacked by Spurs.

“In one year and a half in Paris, we won three trophies, and we want to win one here. I’m desperate to win, of course.”

The Argentine has had mixed fortunes at Chelsea. With a number of young players signed, and a large number of injuries to the squad, their league form has been inconsistent.

However, the Blues have now put together a run of form, winning five of their past six games in all competitions, with the one defeat in that period being the semi-final first-leg loss to Middlesbrough.

“In some point, it’s an amazing achievement,” he added. “I think it was the objective when we started: With no Champions League, no Europa League, no Conference League, to build a team from nearly zero. Of course, that was the objective, to be at Wembley in February.

“The job is done but now it is about winning the final. From another side it is like it is not important as Chelsea is about winning the Champions League and Premier League.

“We need to start to realise and give credit to the team – as this is a team where a massive percentage didn’t maybe play at Wembley [before]. It’s important for the club, important for us and in this process to build a new team.”

‘Trophy would set a precedent’

Pochettino said after the semi-final victory that reaching the final will help to build the “mentality” of his “young team”, many of whom have yet to play in a final of a major competition.

“It would be huge for him and set a precedent, in his first full year at the club, to win a trophy,” said former Brighton and Crystal Palace striker Glenn Murray on BBC Radio 5 Live.

“It is still a major trophy and he will see that as, he hopes, the start of a lot of silverware for the football club.

“The fans want to be top of the league and challenging for the Champions League, but if they can win some silverware, then that would be seen as a huge success and progression of this project at Chelsea.

“They understood what was at stake and that was saving their season. This can be a kick-start; this can be a confidence booster.

“It takes time to develop relationships and understand how your manager wants you to play and how fit he wants you to be. I think this could be a turning point. Things are starting to look up at Stamford Bridge.”

Chelsea do not have much time to celebrate as they are back in action on Friday at Stamford Bridge as they play Aston Villa in the FA Cup fourth round.

Jurgen Klopp’s side thrashed West Ham 5-1 on Wednesday evening to reach the last four, while Fulham won a penalty shootout at Everton on Tuesday.

Chelsea also beat Newcastle on penalties in their quarter-final, while Middlesbrough won 3-0 at Port Vale to set up a repeat of the 1998 final.

The two-legged ties will be played in the weeks commencing 8 and 22 January.

Liverpool are aiming to reach their 14th final and claim a 10th success in the competition they first triumphed in back in 1981.

Marco Silva’s Fulham, who travel to Anfield in the first leg, are making their bow in the last four and have not featured in a semi-final of any sort since 2010 when they went on to the final of the Europa League.

Meanwhile, Championship club Boro, who host Chelsea in the first leg of their tie, are appearing in the semi-finals for the first time since 2004, when they won the competition to claim their only major trophy.

Chelsea, who won both the 1997 FA Cup final and the League Cup final a year later against the Teessiders, are looking to win the tournament for a sixth time and collect a first piece of silverware since they lifted the delayed 2021 Club World Cup in February last year.

EFL Cup: Chelsea beat Newcastle on penalties to reach last four http://34.58.148.58/efl-cup-chelsea-beat-newcastle-on-penalties-to-reach-last-four/ Tue, 19 Dec 2023 23:32:39 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2334619 Newcastle United’s Kieran Trippier endured a Stamford Bridge nightmare as Chelsea reached the Carabao Cup semi-finals after a penalty shootout.

Callum Wilson’s 16th-minute goal looked to be sending Newcastle into the last four until substitute Mykhailo Mudryk pounced on the veteran defender’s error deep into stoppage time to send the game to spot-kicks.

The 33-year-old, who has suffered a dip in form recently, then fired Newcastle’s second penalty wide and once keeper Djordje Petrovic saved Matt Ritchie’s spot-kick Chelsea had gone from the despair of contemplating defeat to the sheer elation of a place in the last four.

It was cruel on Trippier, such an influential figure under manager Eddie Howe, but his fatal indecision on a header gave Chelsea that lifeline which Mudryk gratefully accepted.

Cole Palmer, Conor Gallagher, Christopher Nkunku and Mudryk were all on target for Chelsea but only Callum Wilson and Bruno Guimaraes scored penalties for Newcastle, who suffered fresh disappointment after their Champions League exit.

The draw for the semi-finals takes place after Liverpool v West Ham on Wednesday, with the first leg of those ties being played in the week commencing 8 January.

Following Mudryk’s equaliser a male Chelsea fan climbed over the advertising hoardings before celebrating in the face of and bumping into Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.

The fan was then led back into the crowd with referee Jarred Gillet speaking to stadium security before the shootout began.

The Toffees’ hero from their second-round comeback win at Doncaster, Beto came off the bench to score a late equaliser after Michael Keane’s own goal but in sudden death in the spot-kicks, Idrissa Gana Gueye hit the post and Adarabioyo scored to send the Cottagers through 7-6.

It was the fourth time in the last six seasons Everton had exited the competition on penalties and brought to end a four-match winning run as their hopes of a first semi-final appearance in seven years were dashed.

The Hammers will be hosted at Anfield on Wednesday night in the quarterfinals with kick-off scheduled at 20:00GMT.

Speaking to the club website after scoring his first brace in West Ham’s win against Wolves in the Premier League on Sunday, the Ghana attacker says they hope to build on their recent good results against Liverpool after beating Arsenal in the Round of 16 at the London Stadium.

“We want to keep going and keep going. The win on Thursday boosted the energy and the motivation and we’ll keep building on that. We expect a lot from ourselves and we believe we can do more than this. There are so many games to go, so we’ll keep taking one game at a time and we’ll get there” he said.

“Wednesday is a very important opportunity to go to the next round – the semi-final. You saw the performance against Arsenal. It will be another tough game, but the boys will be up for it and the win today is another boost for us. We’ll give our best any day,” he added.

Kudus has scored nine goals in all competitions and has 14 goal contributions in 24 games for the London side.

Man Utd beat Newcastle United to win Carabao Cup http://34.58.148.58/man-utd-beat-newcastle-united-to-win-carabao-cup/ Mon, 27 Feb 2023 07:58:37 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2221936 Manchester United claimed their first trophy since 2017 with victory over Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley.

Newcastle’s own wait for silverware, stretching back to 1969, goes on after two goals inside six minutes in the first half established Manchester United’s superiority and set them on their way to a first success under manager Erik ten Hag.

Casemiro broke the deadlock after 33 minutes when he headed home Luke Shaw’s free-kick.

His side doubled their advantage after Sven Botman deflected Marcus Rashford’s shot out of the reach of Newcastle’s debutant keeper Loris Karius, deputising for the suspended Nick Pope.

Newcastle attempted to rally in the second half, but the goals have dried up at the wrong time for Eddie Howe’s men.

It meant Manchester United were back in the honours after last tasting success six years ago when lifting the Europa League under Jose Mourinho, and also winning this competition in the same campaign.

Newcastle United beat Southampton to reach Carabao Cup final http://34.58.148.58/newcastle-united-beat-southampton-to-reach-carabao-cup-final/ Wed, 01 Feb 2023 08:35:02 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2211340 Newcastle United reached their first cup final since 1999 by overcoming Southampton in the EFL Cup at an ecstatic St James’ Park.

Eddie Howe’s resurgent side will face either Manchester United or Nottingham Forest at Wembley as the Magpies attempt to win their first major trophy since the Inter Cities’ Fairs Cup in 1969.

Newcastle, who last played in a Wembley showpiece when they were beaten by Manchester United in the 1999 FA Cup final, had a 1-0 advantage from this semi-final first leg, and Sean Longstaff settled any nerves among an expectant Toon Army with two early goals.

The only cloud over Newcastle’s celebrations was a late red card for influential Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes for a challenge on Samuel Edozie, given by referee Paul Tierney after the intervention of VAR.

The hosts had gone in front just four minutes in as Longstaff took advantage of good work from Kieran Trippier to beat Saints keeper Gavin Bazunu, and the goalscorer then crowned a sweeping move with a confident finish in the 21st minute.

Che Adams gave Southampton hope with a fine 25-yard strike on the half-hour that ended Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope’s attempt to keep an 11th clean sheet in succession, but their slow start cost them dearly to leave Howe and his players contemplating that Wembley date on 26 February.

Caraboa Cup: Manchester United beat Nottingham Forest in semi-final first-leg http://34.58.148.58/caraboa-cup-manchester-united-beat-nottingham-forest-in-semi-final-first-leg/ Thu, 26 Jan 2023 09:03:19 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2209057 Marcus Rashford’s sensational scoring streak continued at the City Ground as Manchester United closed in on an EFL Cup final appearance at Wembley next month with a three-goal victory over Nottingham Forest.

Rashford’s brilliant solo effort gave United the advantage six minutes into the first leg of the semi-final.

Wout Weghorst added a second just before the break with his first goal for the club and Bruno Fernandes wrapped up the scoring a minute from time to provide Erik ten Hag’s men with a healthy advantage for the return at Old Trafford in seven days’ time as United look to end a trophy drought stretching back to 2017.

Rashford’s goal took his tally to 10 in as many games since he returned from the World Cup, underlining his status as one of England’s form players at present.

It was his fifth goal in this competition alone, putting him at the head of the leading scorer’s list.

Weghorst has every reason to be pleased with himself too as he reacted quickest after Wayne Hennessey had saved Antony’s low shot and turned home the rebound, while substitutes Facundo Pellistri and Anthony Elanga were both involved as Fernandes drove a low shot past Wayne Hennessey.

Ten Hag punching the air in celebration underlined the significance of that third goal.

Steve Cooper’s hosts were adventurous in their approach but they would appear to have little chance of emulating Brian Clough’s side by reaching the final, which Forest have not done since 1992.

SuperSport is your #HomeOfFootball and the ultimate destination for lovers of ‘The Beautiful Game’.

The action gets underway on the evening of Tuesday 24 January, as Southampton welcome Newcastle United to St Mary’s. The return game will be played at St. James Park a week later on 31 January.

The Saints dispensed with Cambridge United, Sheffield Wednesday and Lincoln City in the earlier rounds, and then stunned Manchester City in the quarterfinals earlier this month, while the Magpies took down Tranmere Rovers, Crystal Palace and Bournemouth before ousting Leicester City in the previous round.

Newcastle are appearing in the League Cup semis for the first time in 47 years and find themselves closing in on a chance to end their 68-year trophy drought.

“We still have a long way to go, we are just pleased to be in it and the two-legged semifinal is something we will savour and we will give it our best shot,” said Magpies manager Eddie Howe.

On the drought, he added: “It’s too long, too long a wait. That’s no criticism of anyone that’s tried, but we’re desperate to hurry up the processes and try to get the team successful as quickly as possible. That’s easier said than done, and we now go to a semifinal. Getting to the semifinal is one thing, but you want to get into the final, you want to experience that.”

The second semifinal pits Nottingham Forest against Manchester United, with the first leg set for the City Ground on Wednesday 25 January, while the return game will be played the following Wednesday 1 February at Old Trafford.

Forest defeated Grimsby Town, Tottenham Hotspur, Blackburn Rovers and Wolverhampton Wanderers to earn their final four spot, while United have taken down Aston Villa, Burnley and Charlton Athletic.

Forest manager Steve Cooper was delighted to lead his team to the semifinals but admits he is angered by being without goalkeeper Dean Henderson for both matches (as the player is on loan from Man United).

“I have only just thought of that, it is frustrating,” Cooper said of Henderson’s ineligibility. “After seeing the night he had [in the quarterfinal], he was excellent in the penalty shootout but he was good in the game, more than good in the game.

“It’s unfortunate. He’s part of our group, he is so invested in the group and how we work, what we’re trying to accelerate in terms of what we want to become. To do that you need a really good goalkeeper. Not only is he committing as a goalkeeper, he is buying into being in the city and the greater good of the club.”

The aggregate winners will advance to the final and meet at Wembley Stadium on the late afternoon of Sunday 26 February.

Jones has struggled for approval from Saints fans since his arrival from Luton Town but his rating surely soared with the manner in which the Premier League strugglers maintained their good cup form.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola rested key players such as Erling Haaland and Kevin de Bruyne with this weekend’s derby with Manchester United at Old Trafford in mind, but nothing must detract from a vibrant Southampton display.

The game was settled in the first half by Sekou Mara’s crisp finish after 23 minutes and a superb second from Moussa Djenepo five minutes later when he caught City keeper Stefan Ortega badly out of position off his line with a lofted long-range finish.

Guardiola threw on De Bruyne and Haaland after the break but it was to no avail as Southampton defended their lead with fierce determination to reach the last four, where they will face Newcastle.

Manchester United secured their place in the semi-finals by beating League One Charlton 3-0 at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

Antony’s superb first-half opener gave United the advantage but Dean Holden’s visitors claimed plenty of credit for the way they continued to battle until second-half substitute Rashford found the net for a sixth successive game with goals in the 90th and 94th minutes.

Charlton’s 9,000-strong travelling support, their largest ever for a midweek cup tie, applauded their side off, having backed them throughout, briefly raising hopes of an equaliser when Scott Fraser curled his free-kick straight at Tom Heaton.

For United, it means eight wins on the trot and a third last-four appearance in this competition in six seasons since they won it in 2017 under Jose Mourinho, their last domestic silverware.

They lost the last two to Manchester City, who United face in the Premier League at Old Trafford on Saturday (12:30 GMT).

Kepa Arrizabalaga, brought on in the closing moments of extra time as a penalty specialist, missed the decisive spot-kick after a magnificent game came down to a shoot-out between Chelsea’s keeper and his Liverpool counterpart Caoimhin Kelleher.

Kelleher made it 11 penalties from 11 for Liverpool but Kepa blazed wildly over the top as a high-class showpiece was decided by the finest of margins after 21 successful attempts.

Chelsea, who had three goals disallowed for offside, were left to rue two big misses by Mason Mount but they were also grateful for a magnificent display from keeper Edouard Mendy, who produced a string of outstanding saves.

Liverpool created a host of chances and had a Joel Matip goal ruled out for a foul and offside in an incident-packed game that went right down to the wire before Jurgen Klopp’s side prevailed.

“I come from a club where it was very very important to win trophies. Defined itself for trophies. It is good that we are not shy to say we want to win it and we want to be in finals and want to win finals,” said Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel.

“I’m pretty sure the game [Carabao Cup final]  will not be about two German managers but two really good football teams,” Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said. “We wanted desperately to go to the final, now it’s Chelsea… fine. Let’s give it a try!”

  • Battles to watch

Thomas Tuchel v Jurgen Klopp – These two German managers differ somewhat in style and temperament, but both are relentless in pursuit of victory and will be itching to claim the Carabao Cup for the first time in their careers.

N’Golo Kante v Jordan Henderson – Kante is arguably the world’s best central midfielder, offering both defensive brilliance the ability to drive forward with the ball at his feet. Henderson will be tasked with nullifying the Frenchman’s influence on the game.

Romelu Lukaku v Virgil Van Dijk – This battle is probably the closest football has to a heavyweight boxing match – in that both players are renowned for their physical prowess… and a whole lot more besides. The winner of this personal duel could lead his team to Carabao Cup glory.

Liverpool cruise over Arsenal to book Carabao Cup final with Chelsea http://34.58.148.58/liverpool-cruise-over-arsenal-to-book-carabao-cup-final-with-chelsea/ Fri, 21 Jan 2022 13:21:55 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2070043 Liverpool have booked their place in the Carabao Cup final courtesy of a 2-0 win against Arsenal at the Emirates.

Mikel Arteta’s side managed not to concede in the first leg despite playing for over 70 minutes – injury time included – with 10 men after Granit Xhaka was sent off for flying in on Diogo Jota.

Somehow, with a full complement, they lasted for just under 20 minutes before going a goal down, Jota getting the better of Takehiro Tomiyasu out wide, cutting inside and deceiving Aaron Ramsdale with a scuffed shot from the edge of the area.

It was a gut punch for the hosts, who made an energetic start to the game and hit the crossbar through Alexandre Lacazette early on. Bukayo Saka had nipped in front of Andy Robertson to win a foul just outside the box, with Lacazette guiding the resulting free-kick on target only for Caoimhin Kelleher to touch the ball onto the frame of the goal.

There were signs that their defence might not be as cohesive as it had been at Anfield, however. Liverpool thought they had gone ahead with 12 minutes on the clock when Fabinho nodded down to Joel Matip at a corner and his teammate stabbed the ball into the back of the net, but the linesman’s flag went up before VAR confirmed that Matip had been narrowly offside.

The second half was end-to-end as Arsenal pushed hard for an equaliser. Liverpool continued to look dangerous, though, with Ibrahima Konate hitting the base of the post with a header after coming on for Matip at halftime.

The visitors wrapped up the win with just over 10 minutes to go, Jota running off the shoulder of Ben White and dinking over Ramsdale. While the goal was initially chalked off for offside, a VAR check showed that Jota was level and the decision was overturned. Cue wild celebrations in the away end, with Liverpool, now set to face Chelsea at Wembley next month.

Arsenal, meanwhile, contrived to end the night with 10 men once again, Thomas Partey earning two yellow cards within three minutes of each other on his return from the Africa Cup of Nations.

Carabao Cup: Chelsea into final after second-leg win over Spurs http://34.58.148.58/carabao-cup-chelsea-into-final-after-second-leg-win-over-spurs/ Thu, 13 Jan 2022 06:23:24 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2066710 Chelsea reach the Carabao Cup final after producing a hard-fought 1-0 win against Tottenham in the semi-final second leg (3-0 on aggregate) at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Antonio Rudiger’s first-half header was the difference in north London as Chelsea produced an important victory in a game where Tottenham correctly had two penalty decisions overturned and a goal disallowed by VAR.

Chelsea dominated possession in the first half and their third goal of the tie arrived in the 17th minute. A corner into the box was met by Rudiger ahead of Pierluigi Gollini, who misjudged the flight of the ball, to give Chelsea a comfortable advantage.

Tottenham grew as the half progressed. Harry Kane’s was inches away from pulling Spurs level in the tie just past the half hour mark, but he could not turn in Davinson Sanchez’s near-post header from a corner.

And there was a moment of VAR controversy three minutes before half-time when referee Andre Marriner awarded a penalty for a rash sliding challenge from Rudiger on Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. After a two-minute VAR review led by Mike Dean, the decision was that the foul was just outside the box.

In the 57th minute Marriner pointed to the spot again when Arrizabalaga tackled Lucas Moura inside the box, but replays showed he produced a clean tackle and the penalty was chalked off.

After Arrizabalaga pulled off a brilliant save to deny a driving header from Emerson Royal on the hour mark, Tottenham had an equaliser ruled out by VAR.

Kane’s right boot was just offside before he put the ball into the empty net. With Arrizabalaga out of his goal ahead of play, Kane was deemed to be just ahead of Andreas Christensen with only Rudiger in front of him.

The game stopped in the 84th minute for around seven minutes after a fan was taken ill in the stands, but Chelsea were untroubled for the remainder of the half.

Thomas Tuchel’s side will play Liverpool or Arsenal in the final at Wembley Stadium on February 27.

Dominant Chelsea beat Spurs in first leg of Carabao Cup semi http://34.58.148.58/dominant-chelsea-beat-spurs-in-first-leg-of-carabao-cup-semi/ Thu, 06 Jan 2022 06:37:23 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2064765 Chelsea deservedly beat Tottenham in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final but had so many chances they should have already sealed their place at Wembley.

Kai Havertz gave Chelsea an early lead when he ran onto Marcos Alonso’s through ball and fired home with Davinson Sanchez unable to keep the shot out on the line.

The Blues’ second was a comedy own goal as Japhet Tanganga headed the ball into team-mate Ben Davies’ shoulder and it flew into the net.

Romelu Lukaku, back in the team after a one-game exile for comments he made in an interview, had several chances and headed wide from close range.

Spurs, who changed to a back four after a torrid first half, had to wait until the 50th minute for a shot, with Harry Kane’s free-kick saved by Kepa.

But the chances continued to come for Chelsea with Hugo Lloris denying Lukaku, Hakim Ziyech and the returning Timo Werner.

Spurs will need to be much better in a week’s time in the second leg to have any chance of reaching Wembley.

Liverpool and Arsenal play in the other semi-final with their games on 13 and 20 January after the first leg rearranged because of Covid cases in the Liverpool camp.

Carabao Cup: Holders Man City beaten on penalties by West Ham http://34.58.148.58/carabao-cup-holders-man-city-beaten-on-penalties-by-west-ham/ Thu, 28 Oct 2021 06:59:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2035163 Holders Manchester City were knocked out of the Carabao Cup after West Ham United won 5-3 on penalties in front of an ecstatic sell-out crowd at London Stadium.

The fourth-round tie had ended goalless after 90 minutes before Said Benrahma scored the decisive spot-kick.

Phil Foden fired his penalty wide to give the Hammers the advantage in the shootout.

It is the first time since 2016 City, who have won the competition for the past four seasons, have been eliminated.

Pep Guardiola made nine changes to his side but City finished the 90 minutes with substitutes Foden, Gabriel Jesus and Jack Grealish on the pitch as they searched for a winner in normal time.

Despite peppering West Ham’s goal with 25 attempts, they could not find a breakthrough as the hosts claimed a famous win to advance to Saturday’s quarter-final draw.

Nathan Ake should have headed City ahead in the first half before Ilkay Gundogan missed another chance from an angle.

Hammers keeper Alphonse Areola made a fine save to keep out John Stones’ close-range header while West Ham’s best chance in normal time fell to Tomas Soucek.

Minamino and Origi goals send Liverpool into Carabao Cup quarter-finals http://34.58.148.58/minamino-and-origi-goals-send-liverpool-into-carabao-cup-quarter-finals/ Thu, 28 Oct 2021 06:59:13 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2035160 Liverpool advanced to the last eight of the Carabao Cup after a 2-0 victory over a spirited Preston at Deepdale.

The visitors dominated the ball in the first half, but Preston had all the chances.

Adrian made a good save from Brad Potts before the Lilywhites missed three clear chances in under five seconds in one extraordinary spell.

In the second half, Liverpool eventually took control. After excellent work on the right by Neco Williams, Takumi Minamino glanced a finish into the far corner to give the Reds the lead.

More good work from Williams then led to a brilliantly improvised finish from Divock Origi to double Liverpool’s lead with six minutes to go.

The quarter-finals will be played in the week of December 20, with the draw to take place on Saturday.

Carabao Cup: Chelsea beat Southampton, Sunderland win at QPR on penalties http://34.58.148.58/carabao-cup-chelsea-beat-southampton-sunderland-win-at-qpr-on-penalties/ Tue, 26 Oct 2021 22:29:06 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2034701 Chelsea beat Southampton on penalties after a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night.

The home side was able to secure a 4-3 penalty shootout after an evenly balanced game over 90 minutes.

With neither side able to gain a lead after the allotted time the match went to penalties and Thomas Tuchel’s men prevailed.

Kai Havertz scored for Chelsea just before half-time, and they went into the tunnel ahead.

However, Che Adams scored quickly after the match restarted, pouncing on the rebound after former Tottenham defender Kyler Walker-Peters had a shot blocked.

There was plenty of attack play on show from both sides but neither could find a winner.

Southampton saw Theo Walcott miss, as did England international Mason Mount before Will Smallbone shot over for the Saints, and Reece James secured the win from the spot.

Elsewhere, Sunderland won away at QPR on penalties after they played out a goalless draw at Loftus Road.

Arsenal through to quarterfinals of Carabao Cup with win over Leeds http://34.58.148.58/arsenal-through-to-quarterfinals-of-carabao-cup-with-win-over-leeds/ Tue, 26 Oct 2021 21:55:56 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2034664 Arsenal secured a 2-0 win at home over Leeds United in the last 16 of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night.

Second-half goals from Calum Chambers – with his first touch, 23 seconds after coming on as sub – and Eddie Nketiah gave Arsenal an ultimately comfortable win, taking them into the last eight of the competition and maintaining their recent good form. Leeds, on the other hand, might’ve won but instead maintained their dismal start to the season and desperately need some of their better players back.

Arsenal started quickly, Gabriel Martinelli shooting against Ilian Meslier’s undercarriage, but Leeds soon took over, Daniel James allowing a first touch and therefore a chance to get away from him before Bernd Leno made a terrific save from a Jack Harrison effort that zipped through a crowd of players.

After the break, Arsenal took control, quicker to the ball and able to get Emile Smith Rowe into the game.

But their first goal came in bizarre circumstances, Ben White limping off prior to a corner, for Chambers, his replacement, to head home when Pepe head it back across. And on 69 minutes, Nketiah settled things with an equally strange affair, seizing on a poor back header from Liam Cooper to touch beautifully over Meslier, before dribbling home from two yards, off his shinpad.

Tottenham were another side to advance on penalties, at the expense of Wolves, and they have a trip to Burnley.

Sunderland are the lowest-ranked team remaining in the competition and they travel to Queens Park Rangers.

West Ham crash Manchester United out of Carabao Cup http://34.58.148.58/west-ham-crash-manchester-united-out-of-carabao-cup/ Thu, 23 Sep 2021 08:20:43 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2019052 West Ham secured a 1-0 win against Manchester United in the third round of the Carabao Cup courtesy of an early Manuel Lanzini strike.

The visitors took the lead in the ninth minute at Old Trafford when Ryan Fredericks teed up Lanzini for a tidy finish past Dean Henderson.

Henderson was one of a number of players brought in by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after Sunday’s win at West Ham, as well as Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly, Alex Telles, and Diogo Dalot at the back. Cristiano Ronaldo and Paul Pogba were both rested.

With half an hour remaining, Solskjaer introduced Mason Greenwood and he almost scored with his first touch, but for Alphonse Areola’s save.

United ramped up the pressure but they lacked Ronaldo’s quality and Pogba’s ability to create from nothing. Bruno Fernandes was introduced but Areola remained steadfast in goal as David Moyes remained in contention for his first major trophy.

It could have been two, but Andriy Yarmolenko hit the post after rounding Henderson and Mark Noble fired straight at him in a one-on-one with the game dying.

Man City beat Tottenham to win Carabao Cup http://34.58.148.58/man-city-beat-tottenham-to-win-carabao-cup/ Sun, 25 Apr 2021 23:01:52 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1951865 Aymeric Laporte was the unlikely hero as Manchester City saw off a resilient Tottenham to lift the Carabao Cup for the fourth consecutive season.

However, the City defender arguably should have sent off but was booked for only one of two cynical fouls in the first half before he scored from Kevin De Bruyne’s free-kick delivery in the 82nd minute.

Eight thousand supporters were welcomed to Wembley and witnessed a totally one-sided first half, as City peppered Tottenham’s goal but could not find a way through thanks to a combination of last-ditch desperate defending and an impressive Hugo Lloris performance.

The best chance fell to Phil Foden whose effort was deflected onto the post by Toby Alderweireld, but the out-of-form Raheem Sterling – who was handed a rare start – also went close, seeing a goalbound shot blocked by the leg of Eric Dier, while Riyad Mahrez fired agonisingly over and Lloris tipped a Cancelo effort wide.

However, City were fortunate that Laporte was only yellow carded for one of two cynical fouls, as Tottenham kept it compact and tried to hit their opponents on the break.

Ryan Mason’s side played with a more positive approach immediately after the restart and their first real attack came in the 47th-minute when Giovani Lo Celso forced Zack Steffen into his first save of the afternoon.

The second half was a much more even contest and it took Laporte’s headed winner to settle the tie with just eight minutes remaining, as City clinched a joint record eighth League Cup trophy in front of 2,000 of their joyous supporters.

With a treble still in sight, Pep Guardiola’s side now turn their attentions to the first leg of their Champions League semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday night.

Cavani curler against Everton sends Man Utd to Carabao Cup semi-final http://34.58.148.58/cavani-curler-against-everton-sends-man-utd-to-carabao-cup-semi-final/ Thu, 24 Dec 2020 06:35:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1897987 Two late strikes from Edinson Cavani and Anthony Martial gave Manchester United a 2-0 win over Everton to book their place in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup.

Despite making nine changes United stormed out of the blocks, helped by some early Christmas presents from the Toffees’ defence.

They should have been ahead with Mason Greenwood hitting the post and Cavani and Donny Van De Beek going close.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side were sloppy in possession and lethargic in the early stages but improved as the half wore on with Gylfi Sigurdsson’s free-kick forcing Dean Henderson into a fine save.

The Toffees were dealt a blow early in the second half when Richarlison was forced off after being sandwiched between Bruno Fernandes and Eric Bailly when challenging for a header.

The second half was a tetchy and disjointed affair but Cavani, who was lucky to escape a card after a coming together with Yerry Mina, stole the show with a stunning curling shot from the edge of the box.

And substitute Anthony Martial, who set up the opener, netted from a counter-attack with the last kick of the game to seal victory.

Arsenal win after taking Liverpool to penalties in Carabao Cup http://34.58.148.58/arsenal-win-after-taking-liverpool-to-penalties-in-carabao-cup/ Fri, 02 Oct 2020 15:07:18 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1862262 Arsenal are through to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup after defeating Liverpool on penalties on a forgettable night at Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp and Mikel Arteta made plenty of changes from the sides’ game on Monday – nine and eight respectively – and it showed, with a cagey first half lacking cutting edge.

Eddie Nketiah squandered a good Arsenal chance early on, trying to round Adrian when found in space, eight yards from goal. It was their only chance of note in the first 45 minutes.

Liverpool’s best chance came on the stroke of the interval, after a Hollywood save from Bernd Leno sent the ball into the path of Takumi Minamino, but the Japanese could not adjust he feet quick enough and sent the ball crashing into the crossbar.

The hosts were improved in the second half and called Leno into action several times, but Diogo Jota, Virgil van Dijk and Marko Grujic were all denied by the German. Rob Holding had Arsenal’s best chance, but headed straight at the Liverpool goalkeeper.

Penalties were needed to separate the sides and to see either goalkeeper beaten and Harry Wilson’s miss cost the home side the tie. Joe Willock’s penalty sent Arsenal through as it dribbled over the line despite Adrian getting a hand on the ball.

Carabao Cup: Mason Mount misses crucial spot-kick as Spurs beat Chelsea on penalties http://34.58.148.58/carabao-cup-mason-mount-misses-crucial-spot-kick-as-spurs-beat-chelsea-on-penalties/ Wed, 30 Sep 2020 08:12:26 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1861448 Mason Mount missed the crucial spot-kick as Tottenham Hotspur came from a goal down to beat their London rivals Chelsea on penalties to seal their place in the quarter-final of the Carabao Cup.

Both managers rung the changes from the weekend’s Premier League games, but Timo Werner kept his place in the Blues line-up and struck his first goal in English football after a mistake from Tottenham debutant Sergio Reguilon.

With a Europa League play-off to contest on Thursday, Tottenham’s only survivors from the 1-1 draw with Newcastle on Sunday were Hugo Lloris and Eric Dier, with Dele Alli omitted from the squad once more.

Edouard Mendy replaced Kepa Arrizabalaga for his Chelsea debut but had nothing to do in the first half, with the exception of a comfortable save with his feet to deny Erik Lamela’s straight forward shot.

READ ALSO

After the restart, Chelsea’s new shot-stopper denied Reguilon, who had a chance to make amends following a good move by Serge Aurier but side-footed it straight at goal. There was a nervy moment for the £22m signing soon after as he came for a corner delivery but flapped at it.

Spurs brought Harry Kane off the bench with 20 minutes remaining, but it was Lamela who struck the equaliser late on, with Reguilon’s cross providing the assist.

With extra-time scrapped the tie went to penalties. The first nine spot-kicks were exemplary before Chelsea’s fifth taker, Mason Mount saw his hit the post and go wide.
