Peace please – Stonebwoy begs Ashaiman townsmen, military over ongoing brutality http://34.58.148.58/peace-please-stonebwoy-begs-ashaiman-townsmen-military-over-ongoing-brutality/ Tue, 07 Mar 2023 21:45:57 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2225346 Military presence and recklessness have replaced the serenity of Ashaiman, a suburb of the Greater Accra Region.

This is in connection with the alleged murder of a military man who was stabbed to death by unknown assailants in the area.

In a counter action, some military men have since Monday dawn terrorized the community and subjected some residents to serious beatings.

This, Dancehall act Stonebwoy has unequivocally condemned as he calls on the townsmen of Ashaiman as well as the military for calm.

The Ashaiman ‘youth president’, who is currently in New York, said he woke up to the news which he indicated is not in the right direction.

He is against all acts of violence and lawlessness, whether relating to the brutalization of civilians or the unlawful killing of the member of the armed forces.

He pleaded for peace to reign while persons culpable are fished out and made to face the full rigours of the law.

Meanwhile, other dignified leaders responsible for that jurisdiction including the Member of Parliament, Ernest Henry Norgbey, have called for calm.

Kwame, according to reports, was subjected to severe beatings by a spiritualist and some men in military uniform.

The brutality is said to have resulted in him being in a 10-day coma at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.

Kwame’s parents, speaking in an interview with Adom News, said he was referred from the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital.

Recounting circumstances leading to his condition, his father said Kwame, who was preparing for Senior High School (SHS) together with his mum and two siblings, were attacked by Abdulai Nyamekye, also known as Malam Yaa Waduudu, a spiritualist based at Gomoa Ankamu together with some men in military apparel.

The father said it was over a money dispute over a galamsey business they conducted at Kwaku-kwaa also in the Central Region.

The spiritualist and the said military officers upon meeting the absence of Aidoo’s father at the family’s residence resorted to brutalising them amidst sporadic gunshots.

Talking about his dashed dream on the social discussion segment of Adom FM’s morning show, ‘Y’asem Nie’ Wednesday, the once promising footballer gave a sad account of how things went from great to worse for him.

He said he was scheduled to travel to the United States (US) with seven other local footballers.

“I play for a local team by the name Akro Heroes in Krobo, and after so many years of working so hard, myself and other seven local footballers were scheduled to travel to the US to continue our football career. And as happy as I was, I went to town on that fateful day to get the stuff I will travel with,” he said.

He said he was on his way back home having bought the needed stuff when he was met with demonstrations in the area.

“When the police started shooting, I tried to take cover and in doing so got shot in the leg. I fell and called for help and was rushed to the hospital,” he recounted.

A 41-year-old man has narrated how a bullet he received in the waist during a protest by residents of Odumase-Krobo against Power Distribution Service (PDS) has incapacitated him.

Kotey Tetteh was part of a group of Krobo residents who were demonstrating over a mass disconnection exercise that had left the town in darkness for months.

As they marched together with chiefs of the town to the Municipal office to lodge a protest, Mr Kotey said they came face-to-face with armed police officers who shot into the crowd to hit him in the waist, living him bedridden and robbed him of happiness since the 17th of July this year.

Narrating his ordeal in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem Monday, Kotey said aside from him not being able to cater for his children’s school fees, he is unable to sleep at night due to excruciating pains.

He said in spite of undergoing a surgical operation, he is unable to walk, a situation he says has affected his economic, social and family lives.

Kotey said he has had to live on painkillers to give him some respite from his pain, a respite that is short-lived, mostly.

The Krobo residents in May this year, clashed with the police during a mass disconnection exercise by PDS insisting that bills charged them by the now-defunct power company, PDS, were outrageous and demanded the power company investigates the cause of the sudden rise.

However, the clash saw several people injured and hospitalised, as live bullets allegedly fired by the police killed 24-year-old Thomas Partey instantly while injuring several others including Kotey Isaac.

The New Juaben South Municipal Chief Executive, Isaac Apaw Gyasi, has expressed disgust over two police officers who tortured a suspect at Railway Police Station in Koforidua, the Eastern regional capital.

He wants the officers to be dealt with if found guilty.

“I was very sad when I saw the video circulating on social media. Even if the person has committed a crime, it is not in the domain of the police to unleash this beating on that innocent man. If it comes out that indeed these officers are guilty, then they must be dealt with drastically,” he told Accra based Neat FM, monitored by Adomonline.com.

The two police officers have so far been interdicted.

The interdiction comes less than 24 hours after the incident.

The police officers have been identified as Sergeant Patrick Amoako and Lance Corporal Isaac Marfo, all of the Railways Police Station, Koforidua.

Mr Gyasi, who claims to know one of the police officers, has urged the Inspector-General of Police to ensure that justice is served.

PHOTOS: Soldiers brutalise taxi drivers in Tamale (Graphic Content) http://34.58.148.58/photos-soldiers-brutalise-taxi-drivers-tamale-graphic-content/ Fri, 22 Dec 2017 14:19:51 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=786031 At least eight taxi drivers were injured after military men went on rampage Thursday night at a busy bus terminal in Tamale.
Three of the injured are in critical condition and are receiving treatment at the hospital.
Nine soldiers from the Bawa Barracks, according to the drivers, stormed the terminal popularly called “Bus Stop” at about 7:00pm last night and launched a sporadic attack targeting Savelugu Taxi Drivers.
The attack followed a misunderstanding between the drivers and a soldier which happened in the afternoon

The soldier traveling to his base on the Savelugu road was forced out of a taxi during the mild exchanges for refusing to allow the drivers to overload a car.
While occupying the front seat, the drivers had asked him to allow another passenger to join him or he moved to the back seat to sit with only two other travelers.
The drivers challenged the soldier, who was in mufti, after he rejected the suggestion and forced him down from the vehicle.
He then threatened them and left the terminal.

McCarty Frimpong, spokesman for coalition of taxi drivers in the region said the soldier returned with his colleagues and suddenly descended on them with guns, chains and belts.
He alleged that some civilians going about their businesses were also assaulted in the rampage including a pregnant woman who suffered minor leg injury.
Most drivers fled leaving behind their vehicles after the pandemonium which lasted for nearly 10 minutes, spokesman McCarty said.
Though no gunshots were fired, three people have been left with head injuries, two with swollen backs and burst lips and the others with severe wounds currently being treated at a hospital.
The overcrowded bus terminal has been a point of daily confusion between drivers and passengers and even city authorities.

Early this year drivers in that terminal dragged the Mayor, Musah Superior to court for attempting to relocate them and clean up the terminal that has been in an appalling unsanitary condition for decades.
A military spokesman in the region told Starr News the command was yet to receive any complaint about the incident, adding a probe will be launched to verify the information.

The diverse manifestations of mob brutality http://34.58.148.58/diverse-manifestations-mob-brutality/ Mon, 19 Jun 2017 08:17:19 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=193631 Mob justice/injustice/instant justice is ingrained and, somehow, institutionalized in our body politic. Virulent and visceral attacks on people who have committed crimes or are suspected of committing crimes, and even those perceived to be criminals are not unusual.

However, the traumatic brutalization of Maj. Maxwell Adam Mahama, appears to have pierced the conscience of the nation. Apparently, this has resulted in some serious introspection on how we respond to allegations of crime.

I only hope this “new” consciousness marks the beginning of a new dawn, and not some nine-day wonder. For the issue to have featured in the vetting of Justice Sophia Akuffo suggests that the concern may be real rather than the usual news making-induced optics and rhetoric.

Nonetheless, I am of the view that the events and the circumstances leading up to the murder of the Major, and the murder itself are parallel to many other things in our society. We have a penchant for mob brutality.

Photo: Funeral service for Maj. Maxwell Adam Mahama

It has many manifestations, ranging from the polished and seemingly innocuous to the extremely brutal and tragic. Mob brutality may even qualify as a Ghanaian pastime.(The same may be said of some other countries too.)

Our efforts to minimize or completely root out mob justice/injustice won’t be successful until we address the many facets of mob brutality.

What happened to the Major is not unusual, and not out of the blue. I say so not because thieves and suspected thieves/robbers are lynched every day. I say so because, daily, you will find crude yet“sanitized” forms of such acts being done to people. I often find cringeworthy and disheartening, the attacks and character assassinations that take place on various media outlets.

Isn’t it common knowledge, how the media often leads the assault on people, and gets the public to subject them to mob justice/injustice through yellow journalism about perceived or reported improprieties?

Politically engineered exposés of corruption and sex scandals among others, later on revealed to be false, have often littered our media space. The sex-for-jobs tirade against the current EC chair, Charlotte Osei, is a case in point. So was the alleged sexual assault of the GTV make-up artist against President Akufo-Addo sometime ago, then presidential candidate. The list is endless.

Interestingly, there is never a shortage of hired-mouths and “party guerrillas” who will peddle such lies and falsehoods about others, and go ahead to swear those things are true.

How many times have people’s careers been truncated, and how many times have corporations been metaphorically and literally snuffed out just because they were not granted an opportunity for defense or a fair hearing after allegations were made against them?

What became of the cases against Kinapharma, and Tobinco a few years ago?

The issue of mob brutality is not entirely a politically-based phenomenon. Lately, there are some videos and posts in circulation purporting that movie director and producer, Kofi Asamoah’s latest work, “John and John” was a plagiarization of Tim Greene’s “Skeem”. Without checking the veracity of that claim several netizens have gone on to share those videos and posts.

Thus, perpetuating the falsehood that he’s done something unethical and egregious. As the facts will show, even before he premiered “John and John” he asserted that it was an adaptation of “Skeem” and credited the appropriate source(s). So, why then do people continue to denigrate him for something he is not even guilty of? Is it because they don’t know, or they just don’t care to know?

It is imperative that we cultivate and promote a culture where we verify and clarify information before we act. It may be okay if we choose to be quick to listen to (or watch) the allegations that are put out there about people. But most importantly, we must be guarded and responsible in our response.

It has been noted that an increasing regard for human life is central to effectively rooting out instant justice. This point hints at the need for us to appreciate the sanctity of human life.

That is spot on, and I agree. I will add that a genuine regard for human life includes the recognition and appreciation of each person’s inherent worth and value, and a regard for their dignity and reputation too.
