During a Public Accounts Committee hearing in Ho, Sandra Owusu Ahinkorah, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Ayawaso West Municipality, defended the utilization of GH₵751,000 from the Assembly’s Common Fund.

It was disclosed that they were supposed to have spent GH₵197,000 on a rental property instead of GH₵751,000.

“We are still renting for the Assembly block, and it has been refunded to the District Assembly Common Fund account as recommended,” she said.

In addition, the Ayawaso West Municipal Assembly clarified that, it did utilize its COVID-19 fund to educate 15 schools within the municipality.

This clarification came in response to the committee’s claims of the Assembly’s non-utilization of the COVID-19 fund.

“It has been utilised, in fact, payments have been made to the Ghana Health Service. It was used for sensitization in all the basic schools. We did 12 to 15 basic schools sensitising them on COVID-19,” Sandra Owusu Ahinkorah stated.

According to them, the items are to be distributed to the vulnerable and needy in the constituency as Accra faces lockdown restrictions.

The group, all based in the municipality had the following in each box: rice ,oil, tomato paste, sardines, spaghetti, salt, bar soaps, and washing powder.

Ghana Islamic Society for Education, Reformation NGO, and Al-Rayan International School have jointly donated 175 boxes of relief items to the Ayawaso West Municipal Assembly.

The team was led by Mr Safwan Wolley, President of the NGO and his vice Mr Nouhad Kalmoni.

Also present were Mr Abdul Rashid Korsinah, Mr Mohammed Shaweddfy and Mr Khaled Saleh.

Receiving the items, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the Assembly, Hon. Sandra Owusu-Ahinkorah thanked them for reaching out to the Assembly at this crucial time and assured them that the items will be shared to the needy and vulnerable.

She also took the opportunity to appeal to benevolent organisations and individuals to come to the aid of the Assembly as it has a huge number of needy persons to take care of.

The Municipal Coordinating Director, Social Welfare, Environmental, and Nadmo directors were all present to support the MCE in receiving the items.

The eight member emergency response team, inaugurated by the Assembly, aside handling infected persons, will be further trained to undertake contact tracing of persons who may have come into contact with affected persons.  

The Assembly, in addition to the inauguration of the response team, will undertake some activities which include sensitising drivers and traders at the various transport stations and markets in the Municipality on how to protect themselves from contracting the virus.

Veronica buckets and soaps, according to the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Sandra Owusu-Ahinkorah, will also be provided at strategic locations in the Municipality for residents to wash their hands.

Inspection of houses by the Assembly will also be carried out to ensure the practice of proper hygiene by residents.  

“Also included in our strategies is the acquisition of infrared thermometre guns and protective clothing to be used in the municipality and at the prisons to screen clients and visitors. All these will be carried out without delay,” the MCE said.
