The facility was initiated by the MP with funding support from Exim Bank Ghana and will be constructed by Best Constructions Company Limited.

According to the MP, the FIFA-standard Astro Turf with floodlights, when completed will increase the number of Astro Turfs she has commissioned in the constituency to three.

The first two are at various stages of completion in Awosoase and Akutuase.

At a ceremony to cut the sod for construction works to begin, Abena Osei-Asare said the project will help promote sports development and unearth talents in the area.

She explained at the sod cutting ceremony which was attended by the chiefs and elders of the town that the project will boost the morale of enthusiastic sports followers.

“I decided to lobby for this project for my people. In the first place, we have already done two; in Awosoase and Akutuase. The purpose is to unearth sports talents especially in football since it’s the passion of the nation and has the potential of uniting everybody regardless of your affiliation,” she stressed.

On his part, the CEO of Best Constructions Company, Nana Antwi said the turf will be an eleven-aside football pitch with floodlights and washrooms.

According to him, even though they have been tasked to complete the project in four months, he hopes to finish and handover within the next three months.

Akufo-Addo revealed this plan during the official inauguration of the newly completed Borteyman Sports Complex earlier on Tuesday.

“Our administration has demonstrated its unwavering commitment to sports development through substantial investments in infrastructure. Upon assuming office, the country only boasted three astro-turf or artificial pitches,” President Akufo-Addo stated.

“We have since constructed over 150 artificial pitches, significantly altering the landscape. I am delighted to announce that this effort will not cease. We are poised to build 100 more such pitches, augmenting our existing infrastructure,” he added.

President Akufo-Addo urged the Sports Ministry to strive for excellence in Ghana’s hosting of major continental multi-sports events.

“I urge the Sports Minister, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and the Local Organizing Committee to spare no effort in organizing the most exceptional African Games in history,” he emphasized.

His comment follows the delay of the construction of the New Edubiase stadium which started in 2016.

During the 2022 budget reading, Minister for Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, stated that work will begin on the project soon.

However, MP for the New Edubiase constituency does not think the project can be completed any time soon.

He revealed New Edubiase Football Clubs travel long distances to play games due to no standard pitches or stadium in the constituency.

“New Edubiase travel to Bekwai to play their home games. They also embark on Iong journeys for away games,” he told Sports Nite on Asempa FM.

Due to this, he says he is personally doing his best to get at least an astro-turf for the constituency. He believes this will help solve the situation than waiting for the government to complete the project.

“As a Member of Parliament, there is no pitch or astro-turf in my enclave. Personally, I have spoken with some NGOs to help get one for the constituency. This may bring to bed the issue,” he added.

So far, he said 10 astro turfs are under construction in the regions and is hoping to extend it to the districts in their second term in office.

Dr. Bawumia announced this during an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme on Wednesday.

“The government has constructed an astro turf pitch at Fadama, Kwawukudi among other areas in Accra but we have to extend it to every district due to the many requests we have received” he stressed.

The Vice President was happy the youth in the area the turfs are being built cant wait for them to be completed.

Under the auspices of Minister of Sports, Isaac Asiamah, 10 astro turf pitches across the regions.

Seven of the pitches is expected to be commissioned in November, 2020.
