Ahead of the clash, Dormon acknowledged the challenge but expressed confidence in securing a positive result.

“In our last game, the result was very encouraging. After losing two matches, we returned to winning ways,” he told the club’s media team.

“We now have Kumasi Asante Kotoko to play. Last time we went there, they really outplayed us. This time, we want to go there and return with a decent result.

“Yes, it’s not going to be easy. We know that in their last four matches, they have not won a game, so they will also be looking to respond strongly. I can promise that the game is going to be very exciting to watch,” he added.

“We start by fighting very hard to eliminate Future Stars. I know it will be difficult, but it’s not above Asante Kotoko.

Karim Zito blames tactical indecisiveness after loss to Hohoe United http://34.58.148.58/karim-zito-blames-tactical-indecisiveness-after-loss-to-hohoe-united/ Mon, 08 Dec 2025 06:21:47 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2607965 Asante Kotoko head coach Abdul Karim Zito has attributed his side’s latest disappointment to tactical indecision following their 1-0 defeat to newly promoted Hohoe United in the Ghana Premier League.

A brilliant first-half free-kick from William Oduro separated the two sides at the Hohoe Sports Stadium in the Matchday 13 encounter, stretching Kotoko’s winless streak to four games.

Addressing the media after the match, Zito did not hide his frustration.

“I’m disappointed in our first-half performance. I wasn’t happy at all. They scored from a good free kick, and it resulted in a goal. There’s nothing wrong with conceding from a free kick, but we didn’t play well,” he said.

The coach criticised his players’ mentality and decision-making, stressing that Kotoko must begin matches with greater urgency.

“To be honest, we were tactically indecisive. We always create chances, but we don’t score. Most of our recent training sessions have focused on finishing. Why do we wait to concede before we start playing?” he questioned.

Zito apologised to the supporters and promised an improved response from the team.

“I’m very sorry. I want to apologise to the supporters. We’ll return to the drawing board and make the necessary corrections.”

The defeat leaves Kotoko in fifth place on the league table with 21 points. They next host Dreams FC at the Baba Yara Stadium in their Matchday 14 fixture.

Asante Kotoko yet to receive Albert Amoah’s transfer fee http://34.58.148.58/asante-kotoko-yet-to-receive-albert-amoahs-transfer-fee/ Wed, 03 Dec 2025 06:30:20 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2606491 Asante Kotoko Communication Director, Sarfo Duku, has confirmed that the club is yet to receive the transfer fee for Albert Amoah’s move to Libyan side Al Ahly Benghazi.

It has been a month since Amoah left Kotoko for a reported fee of over $200,000 and pocketed a $200,000 signing-on fee.

He is expected to earn a monthly salary of $20,000 in his first season, which will increase to $25,000 in his second year.

Despite the agreed transfer amount not yet reflecting in Kotoko’s accounts, Sarfo Duku told Luv FM that there is constant communication between Kotoko’s IMC Chairman, Nana Apinkra Akwasi Awua, and officials of Al Ahly Benghazi.

“I wouldn’t want to go deeply, but all that I can say is that Kotoko has a transfer agreement with Al Benghazi in respect of a former striker, Albert Amoah.

“Even though the agreed transfer amount is yet to hit the accounts of Kotoko, I can confirm to you that the IMC chairman is in constant touch with officials of Al Benghazi. Obviously, the amount will be in,” he said.

Sarfo Duku declined to discuss the full details of the agreement due to contractual constraints but assured supporters that there is no cause for concern.

“I can’t go into the merits of the agreement because of some contractual issues. Trust me, as both clubs are governed by the rules of the game, I do not think that anything can happen.”

Originally set for Wednesday, December 3, 2025, the fixture will now be played on Wednesday, December 10, 2025.

In a statement released on Monday, the GFA explained that the adjustment is part of a revised fixture plan aimed at streamlining the competition and ensuring favourable conditions for all participating clubs.

The new date offers some relief to Kotoko head coach Karim Zito, who has expressed concerns over a congested schedule and a growing injury list. The defending champions have been without up to nine first-team players in recent weeks.

With the FA Cup tie postponed, Asante Kotoko will now focus on their Ghana Premier League match against Hohoe United this weekend at the Hohoe Sports Stadium in Matchday 13 action.

Kotoko comes into the encounter seeking redemption after their unbeaten run was snapped with a 2-1 loss to Basake Holy Stars.

Speaking ahead of the fixture, Zito expressed determination to secure all three points despite the personal twist of facing his former colleague, Ibrahim Tanko.

“It’s unfortunate that my brother, Tanko Ibrahim, is meeting me with his Medeama SC side at this time, but I’ll have to beat him on Sunday,” he told the club’s media.

Kotoko players must improve their performance, says club PRO, Sarfo Duku http://34.58.148.58/kotoko-players-must-improve-their-performance-says-club-pro-sarfo-duku/ Sat, 29 Nov 2025 07:30:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2605275 Communications Director of Asante Kotoko, Sarfo Duku, has called on both the coaching staff and players to elevate their performances as the club vies for the Ghana Premier League title.

The Porcupine Warriors’ unbeaten run in the 2025/26 season came to an end on Wednesday with a 2-1 loss to Basake Holy Stars in a thrilling encounter at AAK II Park. The result leaves Kotoko with just one win in their last five matches.

Ahead of Sunday’s Matchday 12 clash against Medeama SC at the Baba Yara Stadium, Duku emphasized the urgent need for improvement.

“I think the team must improve their game. If we want to win the league, what we’re showing now simply won’t be enough,” he said.

“The entire squad needs to raise their level. One positive is that we are creating decent chances, but converting them has been a challenge, and that’s something we must fix. Improving our scoring ability is crucial.

“All departments of the team must step up, but scoring goals has to be a priority. Once we start converting chances, it shows that things are working well, and I firmly believe that winning the league is still within our reach. We can still do it,” he added.

Kick-off is scheduled for 16:00 GMT.

We don’t deserve to lose against Holy Stars – Kotoko coach Karim Zito http://34.58.148.58/we-dont-deserve-to-lose-against-holy-stars-kotoko-coach-karim-zito/ Thu, 27 Nov 2025 07:41:39 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2604398 Asante Kotoko coach Abdul Karim Zito has insisted his team did not deserve to walk away empty-handed following their 2-1 defeat to Basake Holy Stars on Wednesday in an exciting Ghana Premier League fixture at AAK II Park.

The loss ended Kotoko’s unbeaten run in the 2025/26 campaign and handed a significant boost to the relegation-threatened hosts.

Reflecting on the setback, Zito admitted his disappointment but maintained that his side put in a strong performance despite the result.

“Seriously, we should have won this game,” he said.
“To me, we shouldn’t have lost, but it’s part of the game. We didn’t play badly; we played good football and created chances, but putting the ball into the net was once again the problem.”

Zito stressed that Kotoko remain firmly in the title race.
“We are still chasing. We have 20 points, the leaders [Aduana Stars] have 23, so it’s only one match difference. We are still in the chase,” he added.

Kotoko now sit fourth on the league table with 20 points and return to action on Sunday when they host Medeama SC in a Matchday 12 clash at the Baba Yara Stadium.

The result leaves Kotoko fourth on the table with 20 points, while Holy Stars remain in the relegation zone with nine points.

“Everybody wants to beat Kotoko; it’s a fact. When you are in Kotoko, you have to be prepared for everything, every situation,” he said.

“Basake Holy Stars warmly welcomes Johnson Smith to our technical team. His expertise and experience will be an asset to our club. We look forward to achieving more together,” the post read.

Smith joins the Stars after recently leaving fellow Ghana Premier League side Nations FC. He brings extensive experience, having managed several top-flight and lower-division clubs over the past decade.

In addition, he currently serves as an assistant coach for the Black Satellites, supporting head coach Maxwell Konadu.

Kotoko have gone 10 matches without defeat and still have a game in hand, but Zito insists that such form can quickly vanish if his side lose focus.

Ahead of their midweek trip to face Basake Holy Stars at the AAK II Park, he noted that teams tend to raise their game against Kotoko, motivated by the attention and atmosphere these matches generate.

“This will not deceive us. Every match against Kotoko is a tough match. Whether a team plays well or not, the supporters and the atmosphere make it different. Look at what happened yesterday—ever since we started the league, I don’t think there have been such supporters in the field. Both Samartex and Kotoko supporters were jubilating,” Zito said.

He added that the heightened spotlight on Kotoko fixtures often pushes players to play through discomfort just to feature.

“It is only for Asante Kotoko. Wherever we go, the motivation is that we have to play and win. Even if a player gets sick, he won’t insist on playing unless it’s Kotoko. I have sensitised our team—they must be ready for every game. There is no underrating or underestimating any club,” he stressed.

The Porcupine Warriors took to X to protest a penalty awarded to the hosts, claiming the foul occurred outside the box. The post read: “Referee Aduntera has awarded a penalty for a foul outside the box.”

The GFA stated that the post had the potential to incite hostility toward match officials and violated Section 34(6)(d) of the Premier League Regulations.

The Porcupine Warriors secured a point on Sunday against FC Samartex in Matchday 11 at the Nsenkyire Sports Arena, leaving them fourth on the table with 20 points, three behind leaders Aduana FC.

O’Neil, who hails from Congo-Brazzaville, is yet to make a senior appearance for his home country. His reputation received another boost on Wednesday following a solid performance in Kotoko’s 2–1 win over Young Apostles — a display Zito says confirms the centre-back’s suitability for the Black Stars.

“Samba O’Neil is exceptional, and I have started trying to convince him to switch nationality to Ghana; then we can figure out the next step,” Zito told the media after the game.

The defender moved to Ghana in 2024 when he joined Kotoko from Burkinabé side Rahimo FC.

Per FIFA regulations, a player may represent a country through birth, ancestry, or after completing five consecutive years of residency. Eligibility can also be obtained through a parent or grandparent born in the nation, or through marriage to a citizen.

Following Wednesday’s victory, Kotoko now shift their focus to Sunday’s Matchday 11 fixture against FC Samartex at the Nsenkyire Sports Arena.

The Porcupine Warriors were eager to respond after dropping points in their 1–1 draw with Aduana FC last weekend in Kumasi.

Despite Kotoko dominating stretches of the first half, both sides failed to find the back of the net.

The tempo shifted after the restart. Hubert Gyau finally opened the scoring in the 51st minute, only for Young Apostles to hit back almost immediately through Richmond Opoku, who levelled matters just two minutes later.

With the match drifting towards a stalemate, Kotoko were handed a lifeline deep into added time when they won a penalty.

Captain Ndongani Samba Gilbani kept his nerve, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to clinch a dramatic winner.

The victory lifts Kotoko to fourth on the league table with 19 points, preserving their unbeaten start to the season.

Karim Zito’s side now turn their attention to Sunday’s Matchday 11 trip to the Nsenkyire Arena, where they face FC Samartex in a bid to extend their impressive run.

I am worried about our injury situation – Kotoko coach Karim Zito http://34.58.148.58/i-am-worried-about-our-injury-situation-kotoko-coach-karim-zito/ Wed, 19 Nov 2025 07:09:46 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2601554 Asante Kotoko head coach Karim Zito has admitted that the club’s growing injury list is taking a toll on his work, describing the situation as one that demands exceptional resilience.

His comments came after Kotoko were held to a 1-1 draw on Sunday in their Matchday 10 fixture at the Baba Yara Stadium.

Despite remaining the only side yet to taste defeat this season, Zito said the constant setbacks are weighing heavily on his plans.

“Not losing and getting one point is better, but I’m not trying to find excuses,” he said.

“What I’m going through in this club is not easy. If you don’t have mental toughness, you can’t. Every day of the week, some player will get injured.”

He revealed that forward Dauda Saaka had to be pushed into action despite not being fully fit.

“I had to force Dauda Saaka to play. I have to use what I have to get what I want, though we couldn’t achieve the target,” he added.

Kotoko return to the Baba Yara Stadium today to face Young Apostles in an outstanding league match, before heading to Nsenkyire Sports Complex for a weekend clash against FC Samartex in Matchday 11.

Kotoko coach slams condensed fixtures for player burnout http://34.58.148.58/kotoko-coach-slams-condensed-fixtures-for-player-burnout/ Mon, 17 Nov 2025 13:31:22 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2600939 Asante Kotoko head coach Karim Zito has raised concerns over the league’s midweek-to-weekend fixture schedule, blaming it for player fatigue.

The FA Cup holders, who recently competed in the CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round, have been playing their outstanding matches on Wednesdays before returning to league action on Sundays.

Following Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Aduana FC at the Baba Yara Stadium, Zito admitted the condensed schedule made it difficult to prepare his squad effectively.

“I saw tiredness within the boys, and this is the league we have to play,” he said.

“I even said the FA should look into it in the future because Dreams FC went through this and nearly got relegated, same for Samartex. Wednesday to Sunday fixtures — we are not Europeans. They have the energy, the diet, and supplements to help them recover, not to dope them but to give the body what it cannot naturally get here. Seriously, I don’t think it’s fair,” Zito added.

Kotoko will look to bounce back when they host Young Apostles in their next outstanding fixture on Wednesday.

The Porcupine Warriors, playing at the Baba Yara Stadium in their Matchday 10 clash, fell behind early before Lord Amoah restored parity.

Despite dominating possession and creating several opportunities, Kotoko were unable to convert their chances into a winning goal.

“I’m not satisfied with the draw against Aduana, but I can’t blame anyone,” Zito said after the game.

“We had a lot of possession and created many chances, but we couldn’t score. We need to work on our finishing,” he added.

The result leaves Kotoko in sixth place, five points behind league leaders Medeama and Heart of Lions.

The Reds will aim to bounce back when they face Young Apostles in a rescheduled Matchday fixture at the Baba Yara Stadium on Wednesday.

The Porcupine Warriors secured a narrow 1-0 victory over their rivals, thanks to a first-half penalty converted by Guinean striker Morifing Donzo.

Speaking to Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show after the match, Zito said he had anticipated the win, drawing motivation from the team’s recent performances against Wydad Athletic Club.

“After the games against Wydad Athletic Club, I had a meeting with the players, and I told them that to be consistent, we need to win games and win trophies before we can go to Africa again,” Zito said.

“And so I knew we would win against Hearts of Oak, and I said that before the game,” he added.

The victory keeps Asante Kotoko unbeaten in the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League. They currently sit seventh on the table with 14 points, with three games in hand.

The Porcupine Warriors aim to extend their unbeaten run when they face Vision FC in a rescheduled fixture, before hosting league leaders Aduana FC at the Baba Yara Stadium in Matchday 10.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show, Opare Addo acknowledged that the defeat was painful but stressed that the team remains focused on its objectives.

The Accra-based club suffered a 1-0 loss to their arch-rivals in a heated Matchday 9 encounter at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday, with Guinean forward Morifing Donzo scoring from the penalty spot in the first half to secure victory for Kotoko.

In the aftermath of the match, Hearts defender Hussein Mohammed was cited for allegedly assaulting match officials, while the club faces additional sanctions for failing to control its supporters.

Reacting to the development, Opare Addo said the club is carefully reviewing the charges before determining its next steps.

“We will look at the charge and respond appropriately,” he told Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show.

The game’s only goal came from a first-half penalty expertly taken by Guinean striker Morifing Donzo, keeping Kotoko unbeaten in the season so far.

“We didn’t do well in some areas, and we need to improve,” Dramani added.

The Porcupine Warriors will travel to the Accra Sports Stadium for the Matchday 9 encounter, with both teams yet to suffer a defeat in the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season.

Beyond the long-standing rivalry, the fixture promises added excitement as it brings together Zito and his former colleague and friend, Hearts coach Mas-Ud Didi Dramani.

Reflecting on their shared history, Zito recalled their successful period at Kotoko, where Dramani managed the senior team while he handled the youth side.

“I’ve worked with him before when he was at Kotoko. I was with the U20s and he was with the senior side,” Zito said.

“The telepathy between us worked well; we won the Premier Division twice and the U20 twice. That tells you how in sync we were.”

Zito commended Dramani for his performance since taking charge of Hearts but stressed that their friendship would take a back seat once the match begins.

“Beyond Hearts and Kotoko, we’re brothers. We talk a lot and he’s doing very well with Hearts of Oak,” he noted.

“We’ve played twice — I won the President’s Cup and he won the GHALCA Top 4 — so this third one is to prove a point. I said earlier that the timing of that GHALCA Top 4 wasn’t good for Kotoko, and now I feel vindicated.”

With both coaches tied at one win apiece in recent encounters, Zito made clear his determination to come out on top.

“Automatically, we are going there with the mindset of beating him at the end of the day,” he declared.

Kick-off for the much-anticipated clash is scheduled for 16:00 GMT on Sunday.

Opoku recently resumed training after several weeks on the sidelines following an injury sustained in Kotoko’s opening match of the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season against Berekum Chelsea.

The Porcupine Warriors head into the Matchday 9 showdown in Accra on the back of a 4-2 victory over Karela United at the Baba Yara Stadium, but they will be without their lead forward.

Amoah recently completed a transfer to Libyan club Al Ahly Benghazi, signing a two-year deal with the North African side.

The Porcupine Warriors confirmed the sale shortly after their elimination from the CAF Confederation Cup by Moroccan giants Wydad Athletic Club.

While Amoah’s exit is seen as a significant blow to Kotoko’s attacking options in the ongoing 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season, Zito insists the team must adapt and focus on the future.

“It’s all about attitude. Definitely, he is gone. There is no need to continue crying. We won’t get him back, so we are preparing the other players to take over,” Zito said.

“It’s up to the players to also prove that they deserve to be there. We must continue with what we have to get what we want,” he added.

The Porcupine Warriors were knocked out after a 6–1 aggregate defeat to Moroccan giants Wydad Athletic Club.

Kotoko suffered a narrow 1–0 loss at the Accra Sports Stadium in the first leg before enduring a heavy 5–1 defeat in the return fixture in Casablanca.

Speaking ahead of their Matchday 8 clash against Karela United at the Baba Yara Stadium this weekend, Zito admitted the setback was disappointing but emphasised the importance of refocusing on the domestic front.

“It wasn’t easy, but we had to recover, so we are out of it, and now we are preparing for the league,” Zito told the club’s media.

“We can’t keep crying over what happened. So far, so good, we are working towards the league,” he added.

The only motivation left to play Ghana league is to sell players – Asante Kotoko http://34.58.148.58/the-only-motivation-left-to-play-ghana-league-is-to-sell-players-asante-kotoko/ Sat, 25 Oct 2025 14:53:01 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2592320 Asante Kotoko Communications Director, Sarfo Duku, says the club is now bent on making money out of player transfers.

His comments come after Albert Amoah’s move to Libyan side Al Ahli Benghazi just six games into the season. There is a debate about the timing of players’ transfer, with some believing it is not ideal at this time.

However, Sarfo Duku insists it is the right way to go, citing a lack of sponsorship and economic reasons that affect the club’s financial stability.

Speaking to Luv FM, he said: “Let me, let me be frank with you that the only motivation left in our game today is to get an opportunity to sell one or two players outside, otherwise a time will come that clubs will have to beg to raise funds.

“The matches are not fetching us money. Sponsors are not coming because of economic reasons- and so who do we blame? If opportunity comes, and Kotoko has to be run, why not?”  he quizzed.

Kotoko sold their best forward in the team right after a 5-1 defeat to Wydad Athletic in Morocco, a defeat that ended their campaign in Africa.

“If the aim is to win continental trophies, I don’t think we are there yet because we are not well-resourced.  Look at how their (WAC) fans were organised yesterday,” Sarfo said.

The Porcupine Warriors endured a torrid night in Morocco, suffering a 5-1 loss that sealed a 6-1 aggregate exit from the competition’s second round.

The result sparked frustration among fans, especially as it came on the same day the club confirmed the sale of star midfielder Albert Amoah to Al Ahli Benghazi.

In a statement signed by Acting Chairman Nana Apinkra Akwasi Awua, Kotoko’s management assured supporters of their resolve to bounce back stronger.

“This is not the end of the journey. A setback is a setup for a comeback. We are already focused on the task ahead, and we are committed to turning things around. Our belief is not wavered,” part of the letter read.

The club also rallied fans to stand firmly behind the team as they return to domestic duties.

“We call on every Porcupine Warrior to fill the stands in our upcoming matches. Let us unite as one force, wear red colours with pride and roar the team to victory,” the letter continued.

Asante Kotoko will now shift focus to the Ghana Premier League, where they are set to face archrivals Hearts of Oak in their next fixture.

The club announced Albert’s departure two hours after the game for an undisclosed fee.

According to Sarfo Duku, there was no agreement with the Libyan club before Kotoko left for the second leg, even though there were talks about the player’s future.

It took just less than an hour for both parties to complete the deal to meet the transfer deadline of the Libyan window.

“We had wanted to extend the conversation. Unfortunately, the Libyan federation had to close its player registrations yesterday.”

“So obviously, we also have to consider the interest of the player, as against that of the club.

“And the conversation started way, way back, and there were a couple of clubs as well.

“But when we realised that the Libyans also had to register the boy [Albert] before the deadline, which was yesterday, we had no other option than to reach a deal which will be mutually beneficial to all the parties.

“Don’t forget that Kotoko also needs money to run the club,” Duku stated.

Reflecting on the team’s early elimination, the Congolese defender expressed remorse and pledged a renewed focus on domestic success.

“It is difficult to take, but we apologise to our fans,” he said.

“We need to keep our heads up and win both the league and the FA Cup to compensate for this loss,” the Congolese defender added.

With their continental hopes dashed, Asante Kotoko will now shift their full attention to the Ghana Premier League, where they aim to bounce back stronger and compete for silverware.

In a statement released on Friday night, the Ghana Premier League giants said: “We can confirm the permanent transfer of forward Albert Amoah to Libyan side AL AHLY BENGHAZI.”

“Asante Kotoko is grateful to Albert for his services to the club and his achievements with us. We wish him the very best for the future.”

The announcement came just two hours after Kotoko suffered a heavy 5-1 defeat to Morocco’s Wydad Athletic Club in the second leg of the CAF Confederation Cup final round in Casablanca, a loss that sealed a 6-1 aggregate exit following a 1-0 first-leg defeat at home.

Amoah departs as Kotoko’s leading scorer, having netted four goals in five matches this season.

The former Great Olympics forward enjoyed a productive 2024–25 campaign, scoring 12 goals in 28 league appearances, and was expected to build on that form.

On the continental stage, Amoah made his mark with two goals in four appearances during the CAF Confederation Cup preliminary rounds, despite Kotoko’s early exit.

With Amoah’s departure, the responsibility of leading the Porcupine Warriors’ attack now falls to Guinean striker Donzo Morifing, who is yet to find the net in seven appearances across all competitions.

The Ghanaian Premier League side entered the second leg at Morocco’s Mohammed V Stadium trailing 1-0 from last Sunday’s first-leg defeat at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Kotoko initially responded positively, with Samba O’Neil equalising in the 19th minute after Hamza Hannouri had given Wydad an early lead in the opening minute.

However, Wydad regained control through Burkinabe forward Stephane Aziz Ki, who restored the lead in the 26th minute, leaving the first half 2-1 in favour of the hosts.

The Moroccan side intensified their dominance after the break. South African international Thembinkosi Lorch extended Wydad’s advantage in the 54th minute, before Oussama Zemraoui made it 4-1 with five minutes remaining. Mohamed Bouchouari sealed the emphatic 5-1 victory during added time.

The loss confirms Kotoko’s elimination from the preliminary round, while Wydad Athletic Club advances to the group stage, where they will learn their opponents on Monday, 3 November 2025.

Kotoko condemns Camara’s attitude against Wydad http://34.58.148.58/kotoko-condemns-camaras-attitude-against-wydad/ Tue, 21 Oct 2025 12:26:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2590832 Communications Director of Asante Kotoko FC, Sarfo Duku, has condemned goalkeeper Mohammed Camara’s red card action in the first leg defeat to Wydad Athletic in the CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round last Sunday.

Asante Kotoko were reduced to ten men while trailing by a goal to nil at the Accra Sports Stadium when the goalkeeper handled the ball with his hands outside the penalty box, prompting the referee to send him off as the last man.

Camara visibly pushed the referee in frustration after the red card, an action that could “attract further sanctions” if reported by the match officials.

Speaking to Luv FM, Sarfo Duku acknowledged the frustration in the game but expressed hope that it won’t happen again.

“I think the behaviour that you put up there was unsporting and quite unfortunate, because it could attract further sanctions from the football controlling body (CAF). Sometimes, when players are on the field and they get frustrated, some of these things will happen. I do not think that was the best way to have reacted. It’s bad,” he said.

He added: “We are still working on that. It’s not him alone. All the other players can go haywire on any day, but you can understand his frustration. Playing in front of your die-hard fans, the expectation that we get a good result, and then a goal is called, and then a second goal was about to be scored, and he had to be pulled off. It was bad, but it’s something that we pray that it will not happen again. It’s something that we condemn.”

Asante Kotoko will travel to Casablanca on Wednesday, hoping to overturn the scoreline without the first-choice goalkeeper in Friday’s second leg.

WAC is being overhyped – Sarfo Duku confident of Kotoko comeback in Casablanca http://34.58.148.58/wac-is-being-overhyped-sarfo-duku-confident-of-kotoko-comeback-in-casablanca/ Tue, 21 Oct 2025 12:01:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2590835 Asante Kotoko Communications Director, Sarfo Duku, has opined that Wydad Athletic Club were overhyped before last Sunday’s encounter.

The Moroccan giants beat Asante Kotoko 1-0 in the first leg of the CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round on Sunday, but Sarfo Duku insists Kotoko were the better side.

Despite their encouraging start to the game, the Porcupine Warriors were unable to break the deadlock. The two teams went into the break with nothing to separate them.

Asante Kotoko were reduced to ten men in the second half while trailing by a goal to nil when the goalkeeper handled the ball with his hands outside the penalty box, prompting the referee to send him off as the last man.

Speaking to Luv FM, Sarfo Duku said, “The players are so confident. I think that before the game, the Moroccans were overhyped. I did not see much of a difference between the two clubs.

“In fact, Kotoko even played better in the second half, but for that glorious chance that we lost in the first half, the story would have been different”.

Sarfo believes Kotoko, who knocked out Kwara United in the first round, beating them back-to-back, can go away and reverse the scoreline on Friday.

“They [players] know that the Moroccans are just being overhyped; they can play with them. So that mentality going into the second leg, I’m sure that they’ll go all out. We did it in Nigeria, and they believe that they can still do it. The players haven’t lost hope at all.”

The second leg of the tie is scheduled for Friday in Casablanca, where Kotoko will need to overturn the deficit to advance to the group stage of the competition.

The Porcupine Warriors fell 1-0 to the Moroccan giants in the first leg of the second round of the preliminary stage on Sunday at the Accra Sports Stadium.

A decisive second-half strike from Joseph Bakasu handed Wydad the advantage ahead of the return leg in Casablanca.

Speaking after the match, Zito conceded that individual and tactical errors proved costly for his team.

“This is the game of football, sometimes certain things happen beyond your control. I think along the line there were some mistakes that affected us,” he said.

Despite the setback, the experienced coach remains optimistic about Kotoko’s chances in the return leg.

“Anything can happen when we go there and we are not going there as losers but we are going there to play well and play better than what we did here,” Zito added.

Asante Kotoko will travel to Morocco for the decisive second leg on Friday, October 24, with kick-off scheduled for 19:00 GMT.

“We’ve lost [the first leg], they [Wydad] can also lose there [in Morocco].

“There are certain situations in football that are not impossible but very difficult situations.
