According to Mr Afotey Agbo, Professor Alabi hasn’t done much in his own constituency in Nungua to vie for the flagbearer position of the party.

“All those seeking to lead the NDC must ensure the party is united. Nungua, Teshie, Osu, La and Tema constituencies of the NDC are divided and it had to take the grace [of God] for some of us to win our seats so they must first work towards uniting the party at that level”, he stated.
Prof. Alabi declared his intention to contest the position early this year as other high profile party members also declared their interest.
They include former Trades Minister Ekow Spio Garbrah; former Chief Executive of the National Health Insurance Authority Sylvester Mensah; Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin and Member of Parliament for Cape Coast South, Kweku Rickets Hagan.

Though former President John Mahama is yet to declare his intention, some political watchers think it is just a matter of time before he does so.
Afotey Agbo

Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem Wednesday, Mr Afotey Agbo said most of those aspiring to be flagbearers are all qualified but should first seek unity in the party.
He indicated that such persons could not seek to lead a divided party to victory in 2020 if they don’t have any roadmap for unity.

Singling out Prof Alabi, the former Greater Accra Minister said the Krowor Constituency where he [Alabi] belongs, is deeply divided thus it will be politically unwise for him to lead the NDC while his home constituency is in disarray.

Hot audio: Corrupt officials should be killed – Afotey Agbo http://34.58.148.58/hot-audio-corrupt-officials-killed-afotey-agbo/ http://34.58.148.58/hot-audio-corrupt-officials-killed-afotey-agbo/#comments Wed, 24 May 2017 21:28:47 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=135741 Former Greater Accra Minister, Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo is advocating death penalty for corrupt public office holders in the country.

In his view, the death penalty option is the only way to put public officers in Ghana in check.

Lion, as he is popularly called, made the comment while endorsing an upcoming demonstration against corruption.

The demonstration which is being organized by Adom FM, a brand in leading media brand in Ghana, Multimedia Group is meant to raise awareness on the high rate of corruption in the country, especially among state actors.

Host of the Adom FM’s Morning Show, ‘Dwaso Nsem’, Captain Smart would lead tens of tens of thousands of Ghanaians from Accra and beyond to present a petition to the Economic and Organised Crimes Office (EOCO) calling for investigation and prosecution of persons named in various reports especially the Auditor General’s report.

In support, the former Greater Accra Regional Minister who served in the erstwhile Mahama government said the call is imperative because corruption could kill more people than a conventional weapon.

Having served in government for the past eight years, the former Minister said he is yet to set his eyes on $1 million dollars.

“If our public servants know they would be prosecuted if found culpable of engaging in corruption, they would be on their toes”.

Afotey Agbo wants ‘darling boy’ Iddrisu to lead NDC in 2020 http://34.58.148.58/afotey-agbo-wants-darling-boy-iddrisu-lead-ndc-2020/ Thu, 06 Apr 2017 14:36:42 +0000 http://ghana-news.adomonline.com/new/?p=66171 If the opposition National Democratic Congress were to go to congress now to elect a flagbearer to lead the party in the 2020 elections, Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu would have gotten a vote without campaigning.

This is because the former Greater Accra Region Minister Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo believes the leader of the Minority has better credentials to lead the party in the next elections.

He told Drive Time host Lexis Bill in the Personality Profile segment of the show that if he were a woman, he would have married him without blinking an eye.

He touted his eloquence and leadership style as some of the qualities that have endeared Mr. Iddrisu to him.

Mr. Iddrisu has yet to make public his presidential ambitions even though sources close to him have confirmed to Myjoyonline.com the Minority Leader’s ambition to lead the party.

Per the party’s constitution, a flagbearer can only be elected two years to an election when the party is in opposition and barely a year if the party is in power.

The NDC with president John Mahama lost the 2016 election to the then opposition New Patriotic Party led by Nana Akufo-Addo who is now the president.

John Mahama was seeking his second term in office, even though it would have been the party’s third term in office if he had won.

This means the former president still has the chance to return as the leader of the NDC in 2020 when the country goes to the polls.

However, there are a number of potential candidates who have not made public their ambitions but have supporters and identifiable groups within the party subtly campaigning for them.

Former Trades Minister Ekow Spio Garbrah, former NHIA boss, Sylvester Mensah and Prof Joshua Alabi’s name have all come as possible flagbearers of the NDC in 2020.

But Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo’s said even though he belongs to no camp within the party, he believes Haruna Iddrisu stands tall amongst the candidates.

When Lexis asked him to mention who his favourite candidate is apart from the former president Afotey Agbo said:

“For me, there is one person that I have always admired based on his eloquence and his actions and what I have known him for and that is Haruna Iddrisu.

“That is my darling boy or my darling man. If I were to be a woman I would have married him,” he said.

NDC didn’t cherish power – Afotey Agbo http://34.58.148.58/ndc-didnt-cherish-power-afotey-agbo/ Fri, 24 Mar 2017 07:58:14 +0000 http://ghana-news.adomonline.com/new/?p=43761 Kpone Katamanso MP Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo has said members of the erstwhile Mahama government did not treasure the political power they had, hence their failure to work hard enough to win the 2016 elections.

According to him, although this is not the time to apportion blame for the defeat of the NDC members of the then government failed to value political power.

His comments follow recent outbursts by some leading members of the NDC blaming some personalities and happenings within the party for the defeat at the polls.

Speaking in an interview with Emefa Apawu on Class 91.3FM’s 505 programme on Thursday March 23, Mr Afotey Agbo said: “People are coming out to react, they are coming out to give some comments but some are not correct and others, even if they are right, this is not the time to apportion blame, this is not the time to accuse people.

“Whatever happened in the [election] somehow is about human character, it is about people who have been in power for eight years, and at a point they cherished no more the power they had.”

Meanwhile, Kofi Adams, National Organiser of the NDC, has said the decision of some leading lights of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to openly criticise the actions of the party and some persons within its ranks following the NDC’s loss in last year’s elections reflects their inexperience and immaturity.

According to him, a committee has been put in place by the party to carry out a post mortem as to why the NDC lost the elections, hence, all concerns must be directed at the Professor Kwesi Botchwey-led committee.

His comments follow recent remarks made by some leading members of the party that the conduct of some members of the John Mahama government resulted in the party’s defeat.

The immediate past chairman of the opposition NDC, Dr Kwabena Adjei, is reported to have said on Starr FM: “I wasn’t surprised [the NDC lost]…because when they (delegates) voted me out in Kumasi they voted the party out. It was a done deal [that the NPP will win]. I am not superstitious, but I came to the party with my own style…and I had a way of relating to the people.

“Nobody involved me in the campaign, I involved myself… No, I wasn’t invited… I tried to get access to the president and I didn’t get access. When I noticed things were going wrong, I tried and tried and tried but I didn’t get access, so I mobilised myself…and did what I could do.”

Similarly, a former National Organiser of the NDC, Yaw Boateng Gyan, has said most of the executives disrespected the electorate.

“The other issue has to do with the way and manner our people were talking to the electorate…very arrogant and disrespectful. How would we have appealed to the voters?” he wondered in an interview on Abusua FM.

“Some of us couldn’t talk because they said we had been voted out of the executive position of the party and so we shouldn’t talk… A lot of things went wrong.”

However, reacting to these comments in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme on Thursday March 23, Mr Adams said: “A committee has been set up to listen to the concerns of all party members. The committee members are made up of eminent men who were not part of the executives and so we should allow the committee to work and put out their final report for all of us to work with.

“The accusation and counter accusation now will not help because if at the end of the day these accusations are not captured in the final report, then it means you have defamed somebody. I believe strongly that the way some of the leading members of the party are speaking is not the best, it doesn’t give indications of any experience, it doesn’t give indications of any maturity. I believe that they need to behave a little bit more maturely.”
