Why Tyrone Marhguy did not join Achimota SHS NSMQ squad http://34.58.148.58/why-tyrone-marhguy-did-not-join-achimota-shs-nsmq-squad/ Tue, 09 Jan 2024 13:32:39 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2339681 Rastafarian student, Tyrone Iras Marhguy, has broken silence on why he was not part of Achimota Senior High School’s (SHS) squad for the 2023 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ).

Several Ghanaians were excited after a photo of Achimota’s potential team for the highly anticipated annual contest featured Tyrone.

He was spotted in a social media post depicting the schools trial session ahead of the NSMQ season.

But bubbles were burst after he missed out on the final squad.

However, Tyrone has disclosed he was dropped from the team because he did not study biology.

Despite being a Science student, his electives in addition to the four core subjects were Chemistry, Physics, Elective Mathematics and Information Technology (ICT).

“I got into the first 15 during the selection test so I was part of the team. But moving forward it was the biology. It was as if you can’t have biology not in sync.

“If the problem of the day happens to be biology, it will be a catastrophe because I can’t do anything and will just watch my colleague. Though I practiced and learned the biology, there were others who had been doing it for like three years so after everything I just didn’t take part,” he told Accra-based TV3.

2023 NSMQ grand finale rescheduled http://34.58.148.58/2023-nsmq-grand-finale-rescheduled/ Thu, 26 Oct 2023 14:03:56 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2310448 Primetime Limited, the organisers of the National Maths and Science Quiz (NSMQ) has rescheduled the finale for the 2023 edition to Monday, October 30, 2023.

The finale, which was initially scheduled for Tuesday, October 24, 2023, at the National Theatre in Accra, was postponed to October 31 due to Ga Manye Naa Dedei Omaedru III’s funeral.

However, the organisers have in a new announcement communicated it will now take place at 2 p.m on Monday.

The development, according to Primetime, is due to unforeseen circumstances beyond its control.

Meanwhile, the highly anticipated finale will be between seven-time champion PRESEC-Legon and two-time champions, Achimota School and Opoku Oware School.

Defending champion, PRESEC has set its sights set on an exceptional feat: back-to-back victories.

But it’s a chance for Achimota School and Opoku Ware to seek redemption, as they aim to avenge their losses to PRESEC Legon in the 2009 and 2020 finals, respectively.

NSMQ 2023: Road to the finale; story of Achimota School http://34.58.148.58/nsmq-2023-road-to-the-finale-story-of-achimota-school/ Wed, 25 Oct 2023 15:55:43 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2310011 Achimota School (Motown) had their last taste of the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) finale back in 2009, where they engaged in a head-to-head battle against Presbyterian Boys School (PRESEC), ultimately ending up on the losing side.

Fourteen years later, they are once again at the cusp of the NSMQ championship in 2023. Their aspirations are high as they strive to win their third trophy.

They go head-to-head against their rivals, PRESEC and the formidable Opoku Ware School (OWASS).

Achimota School’s journey to this finale has not been an easy one. Unlike their competitors, their path started from the regional NSMQ competitions after failing to secure a seeded slot in both 2022 and the preceding year.

Despite falling short of making it to the finals of the Greater Accra Regional Championship, Achimota School’s performance earned them a coveted place among the top schools heading to the national stage.

Armed with determination and an unwavering focus on victory, Achimota School entered the preliminary stage of the national competition, yearning for another triumphant moment.

They proved their mettle right from the preliminary stage, where they amassed an impressive 60 points – the second-highest among all contestants on the fourth day of the competition – securing their spot in the one-eighth stage.

They triumphed over their competitors Notre Dame Girls’ SHS and St Francis Girls’ SHS, with respective scores of 47 and 17 points, clinching the contest with finesse.

At the one-eighth stage, Achimota School faced off against Holy Child School, the runner-up from the prelims, and the seeded school, Assin State College.

With unwavering determination, Motown secured their place on the seeded school list by replacing Assin State College, ultimately booking a ticket to the quarterfinals.

In the quarterfinal round, Achimota School encountered the 2022 semifinalists, Kumasi High School, and Osei Kyeretwie School. In a thrilling and closely contested match, Achimota School managed to secure 34 points, ensuring their passage to the semi-finals.

As the semi-final approached they were met with an even tougher battle and formidable opponents in both St. Louis SHS and Wesley Girls SHS.

However, they pulled a stunner in the semifinal clash to eliminate their opponents and land at the final slot they have missed for many years.

Now, with this hard-earned opportunity, Achimota School is gearing up to face their old rivals, PRESEC Legon, whom they encountered in their last NSMQ final back in 2009.

They may have ended their finale drought but their competitor PRESEC is hungry for an eighth trophy and OWASS for a third, will Achimota School who also hopes to win the trophy survive?

The stage is set for an electrifying showdown in the pursuit of the coveted NSMQ championship.

NSMQ 2023: Primetime Limited reacts to Prempeh College’s protest http://34.58.148.58/nsmq-2023-primetime-limited-reacts-to-prempeh-colleges-protest/ Mon, 23 Oct 2023 15:37:23 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2309192 Primetime Limited, the organisers of the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) has responded to concerns raised by Prempeh College in a petition following their exit from the 2023 contest.

In a letter addressed to the NSMQ organisers, the coordinators of the Prempeh College NSMQ team and Old Boys expressed dissatisfaction with events leading to their exit.

They raised an objection about an answer they provided to a riddle in the semi-final race on Thursday, for which they were not awarded the marks.

The coordinators, among other things, said they have noticed that over time, the competition is taking on a computation that does not augur well for the future of the contest.

But Primetime has said it has upheld its decision not to award any marks to Prempeh College for the answer they provided.

In a lengthy letter to the school, the organisers stated that upon discussion with the resident Physics consultant, the quiz mistress did not err in her decision.

“The Quiz Mistress exercises discretion on whether an answer provided by a contestant is sufficiently responsive and would have accepted the answer given by the Prempeh College contestants if, in her professional opinion, the target key and the answer given by the contestants were synonymous.

“She did not in this case, opting instead to maintain the more precise original key. When the complaint came to the attention of the Physics consultant, full consideration was given to all the issues raised and the protesters, after receiving complete attention, were satisfied with the explanation and counterexample that were given by the consultant,” portions of the statement read.

Primetime further indicated the school’s letter came to them as a surprise given that they raised objections at the competition grounds.

This, the organisers stated was reviewed by the Physics consultant, who explained the concepts to the team and they accepted it.

“While we greatly appreciate Prempeh College’s keen interest and passion for the NSMQ, we draw the line at insinuations of blas and attempts to favour some schools. We place a premium on fairness to all participating schools, which is why we allow protests from schools, to ensure that there is fairness in the adjudication of contests.”

“Where a school’s protest is found to have merit, the error is rectified and the appropriate marks are awarded to them. Indeed, we are known to pause contests, so as to resolve a protest that has been made by a school,” the statement added.

Primetime Limited has asserted that it would be unfortunate for the integrity they have built over the years the contest has been active and the efforts, investments, and time all schools put in to go down the drain because of unsubstantiated accusations of bias.

Prempeh College clashed with Opoku Ware School and Pope John Senior High (SHS) in a semi-final contest on Thursday, seeking to book a place in the finale.

But their hopes were dashed after Opoku Ware secured a hard-fought victory, prevailing over their opponents by the slimmest of margins.

The Santasi boys finished with a triumphant 38 points, while Prempeh and Pope John achieved commendable scores of 36 points, respectively.

This was Opoku Ware’s first win over Prempeh College in years, with the latter dominating them in all previous clashes.

In a letter addressed to the NSMQ organisers, Primetime Limited, the coordinators of the Prempeh College NSMQ team and Old Boys expressed dissatisfaction with events leading to their exit.

Prempeh College clashed with Opoku Ware School and Opoe John Senior High (SHS) in a semi-final contest on Thursday, seeking to book a place in the finale.

In the end, Opoku Ware secured a hard-fought victory, prevailing over their opponents by the slimmest of margins.

This was Opoku Ware’s first win over Prempeh College in years, with the latter dominating them in all previous clashes.

But Prempeh College says it has noticed that over time, the competition is taking on a computation that does not augur well for the future of the contest.

“Over the years, we have had to endure a few missteps and miscalculations on the part of the organisers, which have been inimical to our interests.

“We are, however, constrained at this time to protest and draw your attention to the glaring injustice meted out to us and to seek your urgent intervention to right an obvious injustice and repair a wrong,” the statement lamented.

The contestants, Victor Kofi Gbedasi and Gabriel Kofi Appiah, valiantly secured the school their first NSMQ seed to make a debut appearance at the quarterfinal stage.

Students of Yilo Krobo SHS sang and danced to tunes of praise at the school’s morning devotion, after a historic performance.

Students, staff of the school and community members hit the principal streets of Somanya as they welcomed the team with songs.

The school first qualified for the national competition in 2022 but was kicked out in the early stages.

Their defeat was the only motivation for them to push harder in the subsequent years.

This was seen in their performance in this year’s completion after toppling the likes of St. Hubert Seminary SHS.

After a year of resilience and unwavering determination, the students qualified for the national competition for the second consecutive year at the Eastern regional qualification.

They beat their formidable rivals Manya Krobo SHS, Oyoko Methodist SHS and Akuse Methodist SHTS after securing an impressive 48 points.

At the quarterfinal stage of the competition, the school captured the hearts and minds of many NSMQ enthusiasts after showcasing a masterful performance.

The school met with Mfantsipim School and Kumasi SHTS to battle for a spot in the semi-finals of the competition.

Their persevering efforts to topple Mfantsipim School sent the audience into a frenzy, seeing them receive an ovation from the crowd.

The school however is upbeat about a better performance in the next tournament.

“I am sad we couldn’t qualify. But, I know that one day we will be at the finals,” one of the contestants passionately stated.

The school is part of two others including Mpraeso SHS, and Wesley Grammar SHS who made their first appearance in the quarterfinals, and also seeding for the 2024 National Science and Maths Quiz.

However, the organisers have explained the change in date is to make way for the funeral of the Ga Manye, Naa Dedei Omaedru III.

This is due to the ban on noise-making, trading and other public activities within that period as part of tradition in line with the final funeral rites.

Meanwhile, Primetime has conveyed its deepest condolences to His Majesty King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, Ga Mantse, Niimei, Naamei and the Ga State, during this period of mourning.

NSMQ 2023: Sweet revenge as OWASS cuts Prempeh College to size in Kumasi clash http://34.58.148.58/nsmq-2023-sweet-revenge-as-owass-cuts-prempeh-college-to-size-in-kumasi-clash/ Thu, 19 Oct 2023 19:41:06 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2307866 Opoku Ware School rejoices in what seems like forever. They have finally got one over their archrivals, Prempeh College.

It didn’t come easy, the 2023 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) semi-final contest went down to the wire as all contestants were equally matched.

But it was Opoku Ware who led the contest from start to finish, despite being closely toed by their challengers.

The exhilarating contest commenced with Opoku Ware and Pope John, both securing 13 points each in the first round, with Prempeh following closely at 12 points.

As the competition unfolded through the second round, the challenges intensified, defying the expectations of supporters who had anticipated an easy victory for their respective schools.

OWASS maintained their lead with 23 points, while Pope John Seminary and Prempeh had 17 and 16 points, respectively.

Although Prempeh College in round three claimed four points, OWASS managed to cling to their lead with two points.

However, there was no room for complacency, as Prempeh and Pope John Sem narrowed the gap in round four, both accumulating an impressive 33 points, only trailing OWASS by a mere two points.

In the end, Opoku Ware managed to secure a hard-fought victory, prevailing over their opponents by the slimmest of margins. The Santasi boys finished with a triumphant 38 points, while Prempeh and Pope John achieved commendable scores of 36 points each.

This is Opoku Ware’s first win over Prempeh College in years, the latter dominating them in all previous clashes.

They have now picked up the second spot to travel to Accra to compete for the trophy in the grand finale.

Prempeh will sit out the final this time around, surrendering the glory to their bitter rivals.

Pope John SHS and Minor Seminary also put up a fierce fight but equally fell short of upstaging Opoku Ware School.

The Santase boys face Achimota School and a yet-to-be-determined final opponent for a chance to lift the trophy.

But their fairytale is at its end. Achimota School pulled a stunner in the semifinal clash to end the campaigns of both St Louis SHS and Wesley Girls SHS.

In the opening round, Achimota School surged ahead, amassing an impressive 22 points, while St. Louis and Wesley Girls followed closely with 15 and eight points, respectively. However, this was just the beginning, and even more challenging questions lay ahead.

Round two’s speed race and round three’s “problem of the day” presented no easy path to victory. Achimota School nearly suffered an upset after losing two points in round two and gaining only two in round three.

Nonetheless, as the competition progressed to round four, Achimota School made a comeback, leading the round with 38 points. They managed to maintain their lead by gaining an additional three points in round five, ultimately emerging as the victor in this challenging competition.

Nonetheless, as the competition progressed, Achimota School made a comeback. They managed to maintain their lead ultimately emerging as the victor in this challenging competition.

For St Louis, they have all to be proud for. They cut down some of the favourites on their quest to the semifinal, including Adisadel College who became used to appearing in the grande finale.

Wesley Girls will also be proud. They had to begin their campaign from the prelims for the first time since 2014 after Mawuli School from Ho outwitted them in the 2022 campaign at the one-eighth knockout round.

Now, they’re back and are seeded for the 2024 tournament.

They recovered from a poor start in the day’s contest and match up to  Achimota School but their best was not enough to stop the Accra-based school who dominated the first round from placing themselves in a good position to control the pace of the contest.

In the end, it was Achimota’s day. A win and a spot in the grande finale which will take place at the National Theatre in Accra.

“This win is for all the residents who have been displaced by the Akosombo floodwaters and to our lost brother, this is for you. May he continue to rest peacefully,” one of the supporters told NSMQ correspondent, Emmanuel Bright Quaicoe, in an interview.

James Lutterodt was a member of the 2021 Keta SHTS quiz team that pushed the school to the first grand finale contest.

The Eagles say they are soaring higher in this year’s competition and expect no school to impede their momentum.

The Central Regional School who have been known for their good performances on NSMQ lost to Eastern Region’s Mpraeso SHS.

Mpraeso SHS showed their might when they took their revenge against the 2022 quarter-finalists who kicked them out of the contest last year.

The Eastern Region school dominated round one with 26 points, while their competitors National and Aggrey Memorial Zion, secured 19 and 18 points respectively.

Ghana National showed potential when they nearly closed the gap at the end of round two with 27 points while Mpraeso secured 29.

Round 3’s problem of the day proved challenging with Mpraeso and Ghana National scoring two each against Aggrey Memorial Zion’s zilch.

However, Mpraeso challenged the score given to them in that round.

After their protest, their “Problem of the Day” answer was reviewed and they were awarded a perfect score of 10 instead of the 2 that was earlier given.

Mpraeso SHS ended the contest winning their match with 43 points. Ghana National lost with 39 points and Aggrey Memorial Zion SHS followed with 25 points.

The Eastern Region School will meet Wesley Girls SHS and Bishop Herman College for the quarter-finals.

All hope is however not lost, as the girls who show “actions and not words” could qualify for the one-eighth stage as one of the top runners-up.

Meanwhile, first-timers St. Andrew’s SHS, a private school, managed to get 18 points at the end of the contest.

The students are promising a better performance should they qualify for the national tournament next year.

The contestants who are sophomores say their experience on the national stage gives them a fair idea of what to expect.
