‘Superior’ Japan beat Ghana 2-0 to win Kirin Cup

-

The Black Stars of Ghana fell 2–0 to Japan in Friday’s Kirin Cup clash at the Toyota Stadium, a result shaped by an experimental Ghanaian lineup and a commanding display from the hosts.

Coach Otto Addo handed first-time appearances to Derrick Kohn and Joseph Annan, while Antoine Semenyo captained the side in Jordan Ayew’s absence.

Japan settled quickly and dominated early play, eventually taking the lead in the 16th minute through Takumi Minamino. Ghana nearly responded, but Brandon Thomas-Asante dragged his effort wide.

Both teams shared possession for long periods, yet the Japanese went into the break with their narrow advantage intact.

The second half began with Japan again threatening to extend their lead. Ghana suffered a setback when Abu Francis picked up a serious injury and was stretchered off, prompting Alidu Seidu’s introduction. Prince Kwabena Adu also replaced Semenyo.

Ritsu Doan then delivered a brilliant curling strike in the 60th minute to double the Samurai Blue’s advantage, tightening their grip on the contest.

Addo made further substitutions, bringing on Gideon Mensah for Jerome Opoku and Christopher Baah Bonsu for Thomas-Asante, but Japan maintained control to secure the victory.

The Black Stars now turn their focus to their final friendly of the international window, a meeting with South Korea on Tuesday, November 18, as they continue preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
